Quatre and Trowa became lovers during the war. I'm still trying to figure out when they had time.
Other than the two bizarre opportunities and rare chances to make-out, Heero and I never really had time to consummate anything. But when I watched him throw himself in the path of the falling chunk of Libra I wished I'd had that time. I was so afraid I was going to lose him before I even had him. I almost did. I still might.
If I was afraid before because of the control he has over me, I'm even more terrified at losing him entirely. The war is over. There is no way it will continue after this. I hope Heero can make the re-entry into earth's atmosphere without killing himself. He's so tired, and we're all injured. I swear, if he makes it through this stinking war, just to get killed now, I'll kill him myself again.
I wonder where we'll go as soon as we reach earth. I wonder where on earth we're going to land. I doubt Heero's even thinking about that.
Apparently Heero did know where we were going. Quatre and Trowa left us, I assume to hide away at his estate. Since Heero and I have no particular place to go I hope we'll just follow each other. It seemed that after watching Heero's battle on the vid-screen the people of earth wanted to be there to greet us.
I landed first and jumped out to run to Heero's Gundam. When the hatch didn't open I panicked and climbed up. Unfortunately a couple of people didn't even notice me getting out of Deathscythe and thought I was just a crazed fan scaling an extremely dangerous mobile suit. It took me a second to get the hatch open because of the beating it had taken. Just on the other side, Heero looked in surprise to see me there. From the exhausted look on his face and the way his hands were shaking I think he was having a hard time trying to get out of his cockpit. He let me help him, which I am glad about. It makes me feel special that I'm the only person he'll let close enough to support his weight.
Somehow I got him down the Gundam. I probably couldn't tell you how I did it. The crowds, having gotten a glimpse of what they were waiting for, began to surge towards us. I was horrified, and from the wild look in Heero's eyes, he was fairly close too. They started to try to reach for him. I could tell the minute someone made contact with Heero's skin. He clung to me desperately, trying to seek protection from the people who had ignored us till this point. Poor Heero, the guy's only come in contact with a handful of people, and now everyone wants to touch the famed Gundam pilot. Yeah, it seems we're pretty popular now. Well, at least he is, not that I really want people grabbing my hair, but some recognition would be nice.
Bright flashing in our faces heralded the approach of the media. At least they were smarter than the people, staying out of arm's reach and hovering more to my side. As they started asking us questions I felt Heero tense up in my arms. I glanced over to see his eyes flying from one person to the next in fear and anger. I wanted it to end and began trying to lead us forward again. The people continued to flood our path, making it almost impossible to get anywhere. Did no one care that I was dragging a heavily injured person?!
The reporters repeatedly asked us questions that I ignored. Heero looked ready to faint, but knew he didn't dare to while surrounded by all these people. We were so vulnerable.
e ree reporter said louder than all the rest, "Her Majesty Relena is on her way right now to see you. How does that make you feel? Honored?"
He shoved the microphone into Heero's face, ignoring my growl of warning. My buddy lifted his gaze from the foamy stick to glare at the tall man. I gave the guy bravery points; he only flinched. I also gave him twice as many stupid points. Heero looked ready to tear the guy's neck from his shoulders.
Heero passed out right at that moment, almost dragging me down with his whole weight. A cry of horror arose from the whole crowd. People started to scream for ambulances and doctors. I had to grab onto my unconscious friend to keep from getting pulled away from him. He'd probably have bruises the next day, but I wasn't about to lose him to these people. Instead of hindering us, they pushed us towards an open emergency vehicle, even lifting us into the back. I breathed a sigh of relief when the door slammed shut and there were no more bodies pressed against me.
The medics grabbed Heero and laid him on a stretcher. I quickly explained that he was mostly unharmed, just tired. They asked me heatedly if multiple broken bones and head trauma was "unharmed." They didn't appear too happy with me when I nodded. They went to work on him immediately, getting him on life support systems and calling ahead to the hospital to prepare for surgery. I mentally shook my head in disgust. Most of his broken bones were probably months old, just like mine. It's a good thing these people hadn't seen him after he self-destructed. From what I heard Trowa say, it was quite a gory sight.
We reached the hospital quickly and were ushered out of the way as the staff came to retrieve Heero. I could only watch as he disappeared into the throng of nurses and surgical equipment. Someone grabbed me and started to drag me off to the lobby. I followed dumbly, also feeling more than a little worn from our fight. Luckily no one seemed to recognize me, yet again, despite my debut on television not too long ago. As soon as I hit the plastic chair I was out cold.
Heero opened his eyes against the bright light and glanced around quickly. He did a mental sweep of his condition and assessed it as trivial. He appeared to be in a hospital, but not a military one. He wanted to gag at the smell of a completely sterilized room but refrained himself. Duo. Where was Duo? Heero tried to remember what had happened but had to close his eyes from the pain in his head. He must have a concussion.
He remembered hearing that Relena was coming to see him.
'I don't want to see Relena. I want to see Duo.'
Heero drifted off to sleep again, consciously putting himself back out so he didn't have to think about it.
When I woke up I found myself in a hospital bed. That's definitely not the plastic chair I had been on earlier. Some nurse must have seen me and reported that a bloody teenager that didn't look much better than the one just brought in was out cold in the lobby. I noticed I was sewn and wrapped in several places. I must have been out for a while. Deciding it was time to go check on Heero, I slid out of the bed and fell over onto the floor.
Right. That didn't work. Okay...we can do this.
I tried standing but discovered I couldn't even feel my right leg and had to settle for flinging myself halfway onto the bed again. After I dragged my body the rest of the way up, I was asleep before I even had time to turn the right direction in the bed.
It's funny I hadn't noticed being surrounded by a plastic bubble before. I woke up feeling like I was in some sort of corny sci-fi film. The nurses were wearing all sorts of protective uniforms, looking for all the world like the men in white suits from the evil alien's labs. I realized I wasn't in the same room anymore, but in the middle of the hallway, completely trapped by my plastic walls.
What the hell was going on?
I finally saw a doctor standing without the freaky astronaut suit next to a metal disk in the plastic that I assumed was a speaker. He began to explain to me that I had contracted an extremely rare and lethal tropical disease that attacked the nervous system. Well, that explained my leg not working. He also said it was radically contagious, hence the plastic bubble, and that the only reason I was alive was my colony heritage. Apparently there's something about the colony brat's immune system, so I was still living. That's comforting. He finished by telling me they tested my buddy, Heero, and he was fine. They didn't know how long it would take to kill the disease, but to enjoy my lunch.
I looked down at the tray next to the bed and promptly threw up. I suppose the nervous system affects your gag reflex as well. Two aliens came in and cleaned my mess, leaving a pile of pills on the table for me. This wasn't good. I should have been grateful that I wasn't dead, but I just wanted to get out of the hospital. I must have fallen asleep again. I seem to be doing that a lot lately.
Heero glanced away from the television as a nurse came in, bringing his lunch. Someone must have told her who he was because she ran back out immediately. Heero watched the screen raptly, wanting to see what had come to pass by their efforts. He frowned at the sound of Relena's name. More than once had a newscaster mentioned the grand trip she was making to come see him. He was amused as the footage of Duo dragging him from Wing played repeatedly.
He'd tried to force a doctor into telling him where his friend was, but the most he could find out was that he was in the hospital's care as well. This worried Heero, leaving him to run all worst possible scenarios through his head to guess what was wrong with Duo.
A loud clicking of heels on the hall floor startled Heero out of his thoughts when they surged into his room.
"Heero!"
Heero guessed that Duo would have laughed at the comical way his eyes bugged out at the sight of Relena, had he been there. He watched as she wove her way around the many flower arrangements from fans, bearing her own gigantic pink floral monstrosity. Heero was seriously sick of flowers. She sat down excitedly next to his bed after setting the basket down beside her. She grabbed his hand in hers, not noticing the wince of pain as she squeezed his bruised appendage.
"Oh, Heero, I'm so sorry I couldn't come before! I came as soon as I found out where they took you!"
'I know; I've heard it on the television for the past two days...'
"Don't worry," she prattled on, "I'll have you out of here very soon. They said I could take you home tomorrow if I am careful with you. Won't that be nice?"
"No."
"Come now, Heero. I know you want to get out of here as soon as possible. I'll come back tomorrow at the same time to get you."
She continued to talk for much longer without pause. Heero began to take back every foul comment made about Duo's loud mouth. He was ready to do some very un-Heero-like things when the doctor came in to check up on him. Relena excused herself, and Heero breathed a sigh of relief. He tried once more to terrorize the doctor into revealing Duo's condition, but was ultimately left in the dark again.
I think I'm going to scream. I tried to sing a while ago, but apparently my sickness is affecting my ability to hit a pitch. The staff threatened to sedate me. Normally I would call their bluff and keep going, but they already did it twice. I don't think they're fond of joking. I'm bored out of my mind. After the first day of seeing I was not a calm patient the aliens brought in a television to sit on a chair by the end of my bed. I grew tired of that quickly. Now I just leave it on to drown out the noise in the hall around me. I've been stuck in my bubble for two conscious days and one day when I was less than lucid. I wanted to know how Heero was doing, but I knew they would never let me out of here.
It was pure chance that later that day I happened to glance at the television long enough to see what they were reporting on. It was live footage from the front of the hospital where Relena Peacecraft was escorting our dearly beloved Wing pilot to her pink limousine. I sat stunned for several minutes, not wanting to believe that Heero was well enough to go with her lea leave me behind. I was ready to break out of my prison and go beat up the Queen of the world until I saw the aliens waiting just outside the plastic with their stun guns. I might just stay here a bit longer.
The reporters are asking Relena questions about her relationship with Heero, who is being irritatingly complacent. He's not fighting her at all or even denying the things she's saying about "them." There is no "them." At least, I didn't think there was. I mean, after Heero and I messed around those few times I was pretty sure he was going to stick around with me for awhile more. I've always been told by people who knew me that I have a low self-esteem. It's hard to not let it manifest at times like this, especially when you see the guy you really like leaving you behind to go with the most powerful girl in the universe. I turned the screen off in disgust and went to sleep willingly for once.
Heero hated how powerless he felt in the presence of Relena. She could probably rape him, and he wouldn't be able to fight her. He withheld a shudder at that thought. She might try it.
Relena was frustrated. The only word she had gotten out of Heero for the past three days was "no." She *knew* he could be so happy with her if he would just try.
I discovered I couldn't sleep any more after two days of horrible nightmares of pink bitches screwing all the Gundam pilots. I sure have no idea where *that* came from. I know I think about sex a lot, but I'm a teenager. I have an excuse, what's yours?
I am so sick of being stuck in this bubble. For the first few days I still thought it was all a joke and that Wufei would come out from under one of the aliens' masks and say "just a bit of revenge, Maxwell." But it hasn't happened, and I'm beginning to believe that this is all some sick twist of reality for me. I haven't gotten to talk to anyone for days, and I feel so lonely. I think I'm going to start calling Heero "The Prick" again.
I was watching the television again later that day and saw that they were doing a special on Heero's recovery. Relena had let the reporters in her house, and they were taping and interviewing Heero's daily activities, which mostly consisted of sitting in bed with Relena at his side. I almost felt sorry for him, but I didn't. At least he had some company. They showed the bedroom he was staying in, about to explode from the surplus of flowers he'd received. I can admit I was extremely jealous. I wanted my freedom.
I continued to watch the live program and grew smug as Heero got increasingly irritated by all their questions, to which he hadn't given any answers. Suddenly, out of the stream of voices, his rose up sharply.
"Has it occurred to you yet that there are four other Gundam pilots?! Go bother them!"
The press was shocked at his outburst. I could see the slight twitch of his lip, his version of a smirk. It took the people crowding around him a moment to recover their voices before they jumped into the interview with more enthusiasm than before. They had gotten him to talk! I started to laugh so hard that I rolled off the bed. Serves him right. I poked my head up in time to see the pole-axed expression on Heero's face. I felt much better now, but not really in a good way.
I started to climb back into the bed again until my left arm went slack. I stopped, stunned at my sudden immobility. The aliens must have noticed my distress. They came into the bubble and helped me onto the bed, calling the doctor before leaving. Another alien entered soon after and began checking me over. I realized after seeing his eyes through the viewing hole that this alien the the doctor that had talked to me before. He left me alone and returned a few minutes later, minus the white suit, and went to the speaker in the plastic wall.
"You may be noticing it is growing more difficult to move," he said calmly.
I nodded at him, waiting for him to continue.
"It is all right. The sickness has almost passed, but I must warn you as to what will happen from now until it does."
I was nervous now, wondering how much worse this could get.
"It "It is highly likely that you will be completely paralyzed soon. I'll have the staff put you on life support then. If my guess is accurate, you will recover soon after and be able to leave the hospital shortly after the last traces of the disease are gone."
Great, I'll be completely paralyzed soon. Just what I wanted to hear. The doctor continued to assure me of his confidence in my speedy recovery after the whole ordeal. Needless to say, I was rather unhappy the rest of that day. I even stuck my tongue out at the alien that brought in my supper. I'm sick; I'm allowed to act childish. I'm paralyzed.
Heero sat impatiently while Relena opened the box containing his new laptop. He had asked for it days ago, and Relena finally sent a servant out to buy one. As soon as she handed it to him, Heero plugged it in and booted it up. For the next few hours he completely ignored her and searched the hospital's data banks. He would find out what had kept Duo there.
I am so scared. Never in my life have I been this frightened, and there's no one here to comfort me. The paralysis has started spreading much more rapidly as I get to the end of the illness.
I can actually tell as parts of my body stop working. I can barely move my right arm now and can't move any of my other limbs. I'm still able to turn my head, but there's some resistance. I gave up trying to sit hours ago. The aliens hooked me up to a breathing machine just recently and put a bed pad under my lower half. I guess all my muscles are going to stop working. I can't feel anything either. Normally I would be cold without a blanket, but I can't feel a thing. I think my right arm is gone now too. Oh, God, I'm so scared. I wish Heero were with me.
Heero was growing extremely frustrated. He couldn't find Duo's files anywhere in the hospital's listing. He was about to surrender for the night when he noticed a section of restricted cases. Curious, he searched through it. Most of the people mentioned there had illnesses he had never heard of or were subjects to experimental surgery. He continued down the list to the more recently admitted and found it. Duo.
I'm so happy I'm crying. The doctor didn't lie. I can move again! After the worst night of my life when I thought I would be stuck that way, I started to regain movement in my left leg, the first one that had gone. Now I can do most anything again and am simply waiting for my quarantine to expire. I'm in such better spirits that I'm even harassing the aliens again. They're in such good spirits at my recovery too that they've only sedated me once. We're all so happy.
Boy, I like to lie to myself.
I'm miserable.
Heero continued to pack his things, ignoring Relena's pleads. He needed to get to Duo. He never should have left. He hadn't recognized the name of the disease, but as soon as he read the effects of it Heero knew he had to get back. Relena tugged at his arm futilely, not giving up on trying to get him to stay.
"Heero, if you leave now I will follow you."
Heero stopped in his packing and stared disbelieving at her. Realizing she had finally gotten through to him, Relena continued.
"You are still in no condition to be traipsing about, looking for other Gundam pilots. It said Duo was fine. You couldn't do anything for him right now, so there is no need to risk your own health just to go see him."
Heero felt his body giving in and hated himself for it. He let her lead him into another room to sit and watched as she poured iced tea for both of them. It was true. There was no reason for him to bother Duo right now for his own selfish need of reassurance. He thought for a moment that Duo might want comfort but immediately dismissed that idea. Duo was so strong and independent that he couldn't possibly want Heero hindering his recovery. He would go see his friend when he was closer to health.
Heero watched on in horror as his body and conscious mind continued on without him, even responding more readily to his captor. He knew it was wrong. Duo needed him.
I've been fully mobile for a week and love it. I was finally taken from my plastic bubble and put back into my regular room. I had a tearful parting from the aliens, but I know they'll probably be a whole lot better off without me. The good doc says I can leave within the next few days if all goes well. I started to worry about where I would go, but a few quick calls to Quatre solved that problem. The nice guy offered me use of a house only about 800 kilometers from where I was. He was so upset that he hadn't known I was deathly ill that he even sent me a plane pass to get there. Nice guy.
It got closer to the day of my release. My system was clear of the bug, but the doctor said he had to keep me in a bit longer just for procedure. I started to sweat about who was going to pay for all this. I began to brainstorm different things I could do, perhaps beg the man for a bit of time so I could earn the money. I decided to agonize over it for my last days left. I was trying not to think about Heero.
Relena finally let go of Heero's arm as he stormed out the door. It was either that or become wood frame fodder. He practically ran to the taxi he had called, needing to get away while he still had the nerve. He couldn't shake the feeling that he was too late. He had checked with the hospital again last night and saw that he had three days left. He wanted to take Duo out of there and go somewhere relaxing where they could just be together.
The doctor came in and told me I could leave two days early, that the board of medical doctors had decided I'd spent enough time there. I think they were just afraid that if I stayed there any longer the whole staff would quit. The good doc brought me my freshly cleaned, extremely worn clot whi which I quickly donned, and gave me a clean bill of health. I gave the poor man a hug in all my joy. I stopped though, when I remembered I still didn't know how I would pay for all this.
Gathering my courage, I asked unusually sedately, "Um, Doc, I know my stay here wasn't free and that I'm going to have to pay this off somehow, but-" I stopped when he raised his hand in demand of my silence.
"Consider it thanks for saving my life and the planet I love," he said calmly.
Wow, someone did know who I was. I needed to get out before I got emotional. I grabbed my plane ticket, the address to Quatre's place, and what little money I had. I got directions from the doctor on how to get to the airport and headed out. I opted to walk since it wasn't that far and I needed the exercise after being cooped up for so long.
I occurred to me as I walked down the street that I had comely ely forgotten about Deathscythe. Oh...my...goodness... How do you freakin' forget about a GUNDAM?! I ran down the street after my revelation to get to the airport. (I had found out earlier that's actually where Heero and I had landed.)
I got there, expecting to see the Gundams towering over the building. They were gone. I saw a middle-aged man walk past me and stopped him, asking where they were.
"Well, I'm not exactly sure, but I think Queen Peacecraft took them. You know she has one of the pilots with her."
I thanked him and continued on into the airport. I'd just let Heero baby-sit Deathscythe for a time. The lines for traveling were relatively short. I think that people are still unable to believe the war is finally over. I only had to wait a t tit time for a jet heading to my destination to start boarding.
Luckily it wasn't a very crowded flight, and, once again, no one noticed me. I make it sound like a bad thing, and I really shouldn't. I should be grateful for my anonymity. Look at what Heero has to put up with. Argh. I didn't mean to start thinking about him.
