Summary:
A tragedy on Christmas leaves Duo a shell of his formal self. His friends give
up on him and he no longer has a place to call his home. Hilde
makes a deal with him, but how can Duo continue to live without the other half of
his soul? (don’t read this at Christmas. Really, I
made people cry.)
Story One: The Music Box
(Prologue)
//Remember last Christmas Eve
When we sat next to our first
tree
Ornaments reflected light
Of a candle in the night//
AC 197 (Post EW) Christmas
Eve
Duo Maxwell looked up at the large Christmas tree in the
living room of him and his lover’s house. A bright gleam shone in his eyes. His
koibito, Heero Yuy, came up behind him and wrapped his arms around his
small love.
“It’s beautiful, Heero!” Duo said
in awe. Heero nuzzled the American’s smooth neck.
“You like?”
“It’s perfect!”
Duo exclaimed. Heero tilted Duo’s head so their lips
met in a soft, loving kiss.
“Ai shiteiru, Shi-chan,” Heero said softly. The
room was dark except for the small white candles decorating the tree and
mantle, “and I want your first Christmas to be perfect,” he murmured. They
kissed again. Outside, snow fell softly on the ground.
//And I gave you a music box
Back then, that seemed like
so much
We watched it go ‘round and ‘round
As the melodies unwound//
Heero handed a package to Duo, it’s binding was loose and poor.
“I know it’s not much, but it seemed appropriate.” Heero had obviously wrapped the girt himself. Duo smiled
lovingly at him.
Duo unwrapped the present slowly, carefully. It was a
beautiful, handmade, crystal music box. Duo hugged Heero
tightly.
“I love it!” They sat in front of the fireplace, Duo in Heero’s lap, Heero’s head on top
of his and the Japanese boy’s arms wrapped around him. The music box played a
melody even more precious and lovely than the crystalline box itself. The soft
light of the candles reflected off the crystal and onto Duo’s face, showing the
joy and love there an din his eyes.
They listened to the cadence notes in one another’s embrace
the whole night, until one the next morning, when Duo fell asleep. Heero smiled and kissed his bangs.
“Merry Christmas, love.”
//But all of these things are
now long gone
And not to be wished upon
again//
Heero stood up with Duo in his
arms. A shot rang out, startling the American out of his peaceful slumber.
Blood splattered on the carpeted floor.
//But the musical box continues
to turn
The candle in the window
continues to burn
But I know they’re just
memories
Like Christmas past and you
and me//
Duo’s tears dripped onto the shattered crystal as he
kneeled down next to his fallen lover. He picked up a piece of sharp crystal. `
//Remember that old fireplace
That held the room in warm
embrace
And as we watched for
Christmas ghosts
The fire held the shadows
close//
*Flashback* (Christmas Eve: a
few hours before)
Heero and Duo curled up near the
fire, gazing into the flames, telling each other different stories of the past.
Shadows flickered on the walls, back and forth.
“I love you,” Duo said. Heero
kissed him.
“Hai, and I, forever,” he
caressed his cheek.
*End flashback*
//But now upon that Christmas
scene
The candle wax of melted
dreams
And ornaments of shattered
glass
Now belonging to the past//
The crystal of the music box cut Duo’s palm and the glass
of the broken window slashed through his pants and knees.
The candle in the window dripped it’s
wax down on to the floor. Duo’s hand moved.
A river of crimson met that of the puddles and became one.
//But all these things are
now long gone
And not to be wished upon
again
But the musical box continues
to turn
The candle in the window
continues to burn
But I know they’re just
memories
Like Christmas past and you
and me//
