And Never the Twain
6th April 179, 9:05 am
Carefully, long sensitive hands encased in sterile gloves moved the exchange matting that floated on top of the amniotic fluid, trying not to tear the delicate material. Taking a scalpel, she slit open the thin, pale amnion, opening the two sacs to her view.
In the dim light, she peered into the artificial womb and under her mask, the assistant smiled softly as she saw the babies. At five months gestationthey were small, yet obviously perfect. One sucked his thumb and she slid her hands into the wet warmth, turning the child so he was face down. Gingerly, she supported him in a delicate grip. Reaching out, she bolstered the other baby in her other hand.
"Okay, Alex."
Alex poured the setting agent into the amniotic fluid and they waited as the pale liquid quickly became thick, but not quite solid. The assistant slid her hands out, leaving the foetuses held gently immobile in the warm clear gel.
Precious seconds passed as they slid in the supportive framework, making sure that everything lined up precisely. Microns out and all the work and inflicted pain would be for nothing. Laser measurements checked positive and they breathed a sigh of relief. So far everything was on track with holographic equipment recording every move made to ensure duplication.
"It's a go." His voice was trembling slightly as they reached for the micro instruments they needed to do this piece of surgery.
She sucked in a deep breath that hissed through her mask and willed her hands to remain steady. This was the crisis point for the two scraps of flesh in the tank. If this worked....
"On my mark, three... two... one... Mark!"
Reaching down, the doctor slid two near invisible silicate needles down the supporting track and into the head of the closest child. The microscopic points entered through the fontanelle and into the cingulate gyrus of the foetal brain, pulling a near infinitesimal, measured amount into the glassy tubing. On the other child, his assistant was matching him, move for move. Proceeding swiftly, they swapped pipettes and inserted the cells they had taken into the wounds they had just made, exactly as they had practised.
"Okay, flush the gel and replace with the fortified formulation, remove the last shreds of the amnion, replace the matting and lock down the lid." He looked into the sparkling sapphire eyes of his attendant as he pulled off sweat sticky sterile gloves. "If this works, we will have made history. Just think, Maria, artificially telepathic humans..." he sighed then smiled. "It's all down to them, now."
He picked up the clipboard attached to the frame of the machine and began to write his report.

Rumpled, wavy mid-brown hair gleamed in the moonlight and curled softly about Maria's fingers. Playing with him like this was forbidden, but she found that she just couldn't help herself. No matter what Alex told her and how often she reminded herself, her heart knew that the boy was her flesh and blood, grown from her donated egg.
"Night, sweetness." The words were an inaudible whisper, the only way to sate an illicit, but overwhelming, urge to nurture.
The other toddler didn't pull at her heartstrings quite so hard, but she still could not deny that he looked like a little angel as he slept, exhausted by the 'training' they had that day.
Alex was so proud of their achievements, the boys had both tested out to genius levels of intelligence, showing frightening levels of competence when working together.
And it was just so cute when they finished each other's sentences...
She swept her fingers through his bangs one last time, admiring the soft baby skin gleaming in the moonlit silvery glow that filtered in through the low window.
"Sleep tight, Thing One .... Thing Two..." the nicknames rolled off her tongue, given to them by Basil, one of the techs, who had found them tiny red ship-knits to run around in during the day. He said that it fitted their mischievous natures.
A movement outside caught her eye and a herd of deer picked their way out of the trees and across the green. Not an unusual occurrence, except tonight, there seemed to be something... off about it. She watched for a little while, noting the tail flicks and ear twitches. A glimpse of silver flashed in the darkness, almost hidden by the branches and the deer seemed to see it too. Startled, they fled.
Hand to mouth and eyes wide, she made a hasty descision as she worked out what was about to happen. It was way too late to warn the others, they would never make it out in time.
Stepping back, she bent and gripped a ring in the floorboards and opened up a cellar door, breaking a nail in the process. Cursing under her breath, she grabbed a bag, hurriedly stuffing it with clothes, nappies and a blanket. Swinging the pack onto one shoulder she reached for her son.
Arms full of floppy, sleepy toddler, she realised she couldn't carry both boys and her heart broke at the thought of leaving one behind. Perhaps if she ran, she would have time to get to the car and back again...
A muffled thud rang down the passage and she could hear voices shouting above her.
"I'm sorry," She whispered as she picked her way down the steps, taking a last glance at the abandoned toddler before pulling the trapdoor closed behind her. She flung the bolt, hoping against hope that it would hold off the raiders long enough for her to run down the tunnel that led to the exit nearest the car park.
She fled.

"Police! Search warrant!"
The ram slammed into the door, breaking the lock and the heavy oak smashed into the wall startling Alex and the technicians awake. There was no point in trying to run. Black garbed individuals swarmed through the building, securing each room as they went, cuffing people as they found them.
"Sir?" The officer's arms were full of suspiciously calm, drowsy toddler. "We only found this one and it looks like he's been sedated. There were three sets of ... um... twins in the machines in the laboratory. There seems to be a trapdoor in the kid's bedroom floor. We think the woman identified as Doctor Maria Post took one of the children and ran. The swat team are prying it open even as we speak."
"Right." He peered at the boy. "There's no need to be frightened, we've come to take you to a place where they will not hurt you any more." The child just stared at him quizzically. "What's your name?"
There was silence.
"Perhaps he can't speak, sir."
"Name?" He repeated. Pointing at the constable he said "Rowlands." He pointed to himself. "Pittendreigh." Then he touched a fingertip to the child's chest.
"Watashi wa Huginn desu." the toddler's voice was flat, almost cold.
Rowlands grinned. "Japanese. My kid watches that ancient anime stuff. He says his name is Huginn," he laughed lightly. "Never thought I'd ever be grateful for Aa! Megamisama and Rurouni Kenshin...."
"Where's. Your. Brother.?" Pittendreigh spoke the words slowly and clearly, as though to an idiot.
"Munin-kun?" Huginn shrugged one small shoulder, seemingly unconcerned but fathomless navy blue eyes watched them warily from under deep brown bangs. "Pea-ten-dray no baka."
Rowlands snorted. "He called you a fool. I doubt he could tell us anything, anyway, so I'll pass him over to Family Services. With any luck, they'll find him a decent home."
As he was carried out of the house and into the light of false dawn, all Huginn could hear was Pittendreigh speaking in ringing tones of obvious disgust.
