Growing quietly, he mixed the potion up. Those stupid, goodie-goodies would pay for what they did to his friends! How dare they!? But that was okay. They left the strongest one behind. It doesn’t help to destroy all but the strongest and smartest. He was the only one who could perform glamour Magick. Hell, the only one who could perform Magick at all.
The potion bubbled viciously over the sides of the cauldron, leaking into the floor below. He threw a spoiled apple into the cauldron, one of the apples off the tree Son Gohan had maimed. A bit of hair from every one of the Z-Warriors went in after it. As a replacement for hair Kuririn didn’t have, he threw in an eyelash. “This will work quite nicely. All I need to do is make sure every one of them ingest a little bit of this!” He walked away to let that boil for a short time and read through his Book of Shadows for the particular spell he needed. Finding it, he went back to the cauldron and chanted. “Love and hope, wishes and fate, Turn to fear, pain and hate. Make them suffer, give them pain. Give me power, let me gain. Force them to lose what most they love while I watch, delighted, from far above.”
The purplish, boiling liquid turned black and started foaming, smoking more. An evil, delighted laugh came forth from the throat of the man. “I will stand back and watch the show!” He practically danced to the shelf that housed his vials and picked up his heart-shaped vial. “This shape shall work perfectly!” It was cracked down the middle. Being careful not to touch the liquid with his bare skin, he filled the vial up and hid it in his coat jacket. “Black Magick, hear me now! Change my Demonic appearance, here’s how! Make me old and grey. The perfect shape to make them pay!” His features shifted, morphed, into an old, decrepit man with long grey hair and a long, grey beard. His eyes turned to be a twinkling, sparkling blue. His back became bent and his legs short. Perfect.
He buttoned up his coat and made his way outside. He had bought this house because it wasn’t far from the Son house, which was his first place to visit. They already had the instrument he was going to use to make them pay--their son, Gohan. He wobbled through the woods to their house and, when it came into view and he could see young Gohan being chased by Goku, he slowed his pace and panted as though he were out of breath.
The sensitive Saiyan hearing caught the labored breath and Goku looked up, straight at the man. His big, bright grin faded was replaced by a concerned look and he came closer. “You okay, old man?”
“Please,” he coughed, “I need something to drink.”
Goku nodded. “Gohan, go get your mother.” Gohan sped off and Goku went to get the old man. He let him lean on him while he brought him back into their yard.
Chichi came out, concerned, with a glass of water. “Here. Drink this.”
He gratefully took the water and drank it down fast.
“What are you doing out here, old man? So far from any civilization.”
“I live a few miles back and I was searching for a nice place to have a picnic tomorrow.”
“Oh, I know the perfect place! You can fish, swim and eat apples. It’s gorgeous.”
“Really? I’d love to see it.”
“Once you’re feeling better, I’ll show it to you. For now, come on inside.”
Gohan stood back, staring at the “old man.” The one he saw had light green skin, clear green wings, thick, muscular arms and chest and--a snake tail? From the waist down, he had a snake tail! He had slits where his nose should be and yellow, slit eyes like a snake and colorless, thin lips. What was that man and why was he here? He hid behind his father's leg.
Goku looked down with a smile, placing his hand atop the young boy’s head. “It’s okay, Gohan. Don’t be shy.” The fear in Gohan’s eyes puzzled Goku.
Chichi noticed then, too, the fear in her young son’s eyes. She bent and gathered him to her, carrying him. “It’s okay, Gohan. He’s just an old man.”
The “old man” stared at the boy. Why could he not fog the boy’s mind? A slow grin spread over his face. He couldn’t mask his appearance to the boy. The boy saw through his Magick easily. That meant he had strong powers. Perfect! “Hi, Gohan, is it? I won’t hurt you. I would never harm such a small, young, strong boy.” He stroked the boy’s black, soft hair. “It’s okay.”
Gohan shuddered from the cold, clammy hands that touched him. He could feel it through his hair. Easily. He buried his face into his mother’s shoulder.
“How old is the boy?”
“He’s four.”
“Oh, really?” His eyes hit him again. Two years old and already strong enough to see through his Magick? That was powerful. “Would you three like to accompany me to my picnic? I would be glad to have the company.”
“That would be nice!”
“Bring as many people as you can. Please. I’d like to meet everyone and anyone I can!”
“Yes, I will, old man.” Goku’s smile was bright, meaningless.
He looked at his watch. “Oh, dear! I did not know I was this late! I must go. I apologize, but you can show me that place tomorrow, right?”
“Of course!”
“Good. Thank you for being so kind.” He used Glamour Magick to mask his next move. He pulled his potion out and let a small bit fall onto the outer side of the cup. That way, it would get on Chichi’s hand. He used Glamour Magick once more to keep Chichi or Goku from seeing it as he held it out for her.
But he hadn’t bet on Gohan seeing him. Before his mother touched the glass, Gohan hit the glass away, making it spin away and hit a tree, breaking.
“Gohan! What was that for? That was very bad!”
The old man stared at the young boy. He hadn’t expected that. “That was naughty.”
“You could’ve hurt someone like that!” But Goku’s eyes were on the tree. The glass had hit the tree hard enough that there was a dent and pieces of the glass were stuck in the tree. He could also see a mysterious black liquid on the tree now, too.
“Well, I must be going. I’m expected at home by now. I will come by tomorrow.” He wobbled off.
“Gohan, you should be punished for what you did. That was bad!”
“No, wait, Chichi. Look at the tree.” He brought her close enough to see the black liquid. “I think that’s why Gohan hit the glass away. He saw that black stuff. Is that why you did it?”
Gohan nodded, eyes unusually hard for such a young boy.
“You just thought you were protecting mommy from that stuff, huh?” Goku said, eyes proud.
He nodded again and pointed at the tree. “It‘s bad stuff.”
Goku took his young son. “We’ll be back, Chichi. Go inside, lock the door and don’t let anyone in.”
Her eyes widened. “You think something bad will--”
“I don’t know. All I know is that my instinct is to listen to my son. Gohan obviously noticed something bad about that man that we missed. And I didn’t see that black stuff on the glass, but Gohan did. He must have a reason. I want to go talk to some friends of mine.”
She nodded. “Okay, but . . . be fast.”
He kissed her forehead. “I will. Now get in the house and don’t open the door to anyone. I have a key, so I’ll be fine. Be careful, Chichi.” He flew off, holding his son close. “What was it you noticed, son?”
“He’s green.”
“’Green’?”
“He looks like a snake.”
Goku’s eyes widened. A few years ago, some Snake creatures had been going on a rampage and he had stopped them, but Gohan wouldn’t know anything about them.
“You believe?”
“I believe you, Gohan. I have reasons to believe you over believing the old man.” Kame’s House came into view and he quickened his pace. “We need to train you, it appears.”
“Train?”
“I know you’re young, but you can do it. Now all I have to do is find someone to do it.” His sensitive Saiyan eyes saw Kuririn, Yamucha, Roshi and even Burama come outside as he approached. He landed a few moments later and let his son down. “Hi, guys!”
Everyone stared at him for a moment, then their eyes, simultaneously, switched to the young boy hiding behind Goku’s leg. “Goku, is that you?” Kuririn asked. “And who is that?”
“This is my son! And of course it’s me! Who else looks like me?”
Kuririn came closer, a smile on his face. “Well, I’ll be. Goku’s a daddy.” He knelt a few feet away. “Hi, little guy. Come on, come here. We won’t hurt you.”
Gohan looked up and saw Burama smiling gently at him and he walked closer. “I’m Gohan.”
“Gohan? You named your son after your Grandpa?”
He nodded. “Yup!”
“It’s been a long time, Goku. What made you decide to show up?” Roshi asked.
“Well, to be honest, I think we’re all in danger. Do you guys remember the Snake creatures we defeated?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“Well, this morning--” Goku explained the whole thing.
“There’s one left?!”
“This one used some kind of cloaking device so you wouldn’t see him.”
“Yes.”
“That’s incredible!”
“Gohan saw through his disguise, though. If it hadn’t been for this little guy, we wouldn’t have noticed anything off.” An energy signal, a strong one, was approaching. Goku looked up, a frown on his face.
Piccolo landed, scowling.
Everyone gasped, taking quick steps back. Goku stood his ground, smiling. “I knew you would be here.”
“Then you know about the Snake?”
“Yes.”
“I want to know if he is partnering with any of you and I want to know now.”
“No, of course not!”
Piccolo’s scowl deepened. “Then who is it working for?”
Gohan stared at the green man, perplexed. This man looked mean, but he could feel he wasn’t.
The Namekian’s intelligent eyes landed on Gohan. “Who’s the kid and what’s he doing here?”
“He’s Gohan. He’s my son.”
“You have a son, now?”
“Piccolo, you’re strong. You’re really strong,” Goku began.
“What do you want?”
“I was hoping . . . that maybe you’d team up with us just this once. Just to defeat the Snake.”
“Goku, are you nuts? He’s tried to kill you how many times?”
But Piccolo saw the advantage in this. “Okay. Just this once. Then we go back to hating each other.” His eyes kept getting drawn back to the boy. “What is he doing here?”
“I want to train him.”
Burama looked up at this. “Are you nuts!? Chichi will murder you for that! He’s just a boy!”
Once again, Piccolo sided with Goku. “That boy has a lot of potential. I can feel it.”
“You just want to see him die!” Yamucha said.
“Listen to me, guys. I’ve seen him do some amazing things. He blasted through a very thick, very big tree before he could even walk and nearly did the same today. He’ll be strong when he’s older.” He turned to Piccolo. “I was also hoping you’d do the honors.”
“What? I’m a fighter, not a babysitter!”
“I promise he’ll learn fast and he’s smart.”
“Goku, no. Now I’m not standing back. You can’t let that man train a four year old!”
“Piccolo, it’ll be worth your while. I promise. He’s strong and he learns really fast. Just give him a chance.”
“How long can I have him?”
“Until the Snake makes his move. We probably don’t have long, Piccolo. That’s why I’m entrusting this job to you. Kuririn, Yamucha, Tien and even I would go easy on him. You won’t go easy on him.”
He studied the boy. “All right, you have a deal. I’ll do it.”
“Thanks, Piccolo.”
“It’s not for you! It’s just to get rid of this Snake creature.”
But still Goku smiled. “Either way, thank you.”
“I’m taking control of his training, right? Then I’m doing this my way. Give your son a hug goodbye, Goku.”
“I wouldn’t expect it any other way.” He knelt to be on his son’s level. “Gohan, you’re going with this man for awhile. It’s to keep you safe.” Burama snorted at this. “Give me a hug.”
Gohan ran to his dad, wrapping his arms tightly around him. “I love you, daddy.”
“I love you, too, Gohan. Now go make me proud!” He hugged back.
Piccolo snatched up the boy. “That’s enough. I guess I’ll see you later.”
“Where are you taking him?” Kuririn asked nonchalantly.
“Why would I tell you? So you can come by and take him back? I don’t think so.” And Piccolo took off.
“That was stupid, Goku! Why would you do that?!”
“I trust Piccolo.”
“Why?!”
“I just do. Trust me, Gohan will be just fine.”
