CHAPTER 1
The gentle and steady whir of an engine lulled Goku out of a foggy sleep. Though conscious, his eyes refused to open. His lids seemed to weigh a ton apiece and no amount of effort could make them rise. Instead he extended his other senses. He could feel the cool press of steel against his cheek, and the man-made surface vibrated gently. The engines were responsible for that. His nose twitched as several different scents assaulted him all at once. Oil, grime, musk, blood and several more he couldn’t identify.
How though? How did he come to be here? It seemed like only moments before he’d been sharing a home cooked meal with ChiChi. His wife had been in one of her rarely seen good moods, and he was enjoying her company more then than he had in months. Then he remembered how tired she had begun to look. She yawned after every sentence, then after almost every word. Her eyes had grown dull and heavy and she had pitched forward suddenly. He had rushed across the table and caught her just before her head hit the hard surface, and all he remembered was lowering her to the floor as he attempted to bring her back to consciousness with a gentle shake. The third time he’d called her name his own eyes began to grow heavy. The room had begun to spin and the woman he held in his arms became unfocused and blurred.
And then--- Nothing. Not until the sounds of engines had stirred him.
His body felt as if it were made of lead and his head was throbbing fiercely, but he finally managed to crack open his eyes and chance looking around. At first nothing was focused. Grey, black, white--- it was all one big blur of muted colors. There was movement to his left, and he shifted his gaze in that direction in an attempt to identify the intruder, but it was gone before he could even blink.
It was pointless to even attempt to get his bearings when his head was spinning the way it was, so he sighed and let his lids slip closed. He could only just barely hear an unfamiliar voice whispering somewhere close to his ear before the darkness once again claimed him.
--------------------
There were no engines this time, only voices. Several of them. Some were yelling and cursing, others begging and pleading. Some sounded as if they were in pain.
Goku’s brow furrowed in confusion before he slowly opened his eyes. The harsh artificial light that flooded his vision drew a hiss from between his lips, and he threw his hand over sensitive orbs to protect them until he had time to adjust. His head still pounded. He felt each heartbeat in his temples and the scar at the back of his head throbbed horribly. Still, he felt more functional than he had the first time he’d regained consciousness.
He rolled onto his side, and while still protecting his eyes with one arm, he pressed his free hand against the floor and pushed himself into a sitting position. He sat crouched on his knees and waited for the flood of stabbing pain the movement caused in his head to ebb. This took several minutes, and he growled in annoyance. He was completely defenseless as long as he was incapacitated this way. It was clear he was not alone and he hadn’t failed to notice that his activity had silenced some of the voices closest to him. He could feel their eyes on him, and his obvious vulnerability sent a shiver down his spine.
Enough was enough. Ready or not, he had to get a visual on his surroundings. He slowly lowered his forearm, keeping one eye squeezed shut as he tested the light. It wasn’t nearly as painful this time, and it took only a moment before he adjusted enough to open his other eye. Black orbs darted back and forth and the information they collected almost made him wish he had never opened them in the first place.
Saiyajin. He was surrounded by Saiyajin. The room was lined with them--- all individually caged in barred prisons that stretched from floor to ceiling. There were so many he couldn’t even see them all from his vantage point, and that concerned him. Had he still had his tail the fur would have been frizzed and standing on end from the shock of his discovery.
“It’s about time you woke up, pretty boy. I thought for sure they’d killed you.”
The gruff voice drew Goku out of his stupor, and his head swiveled to the holding cell directly left of his own. His eyes traveled up the strong frame of a tall man, pausing only a moment to observe the black tail that encircled a trim waist before continuing up to his face. The first thing he noticed was the scar that marred the bridge of the man’s nose. The next was the shock of raven black hair. The ruffled mane was tied back into a ponytail in an attempt to tame it, but it looked like it would defiantly spring free at any moment. Finally he met hard black eyes, ones that bore into his own with a mixture of amusement, annoyance and complete indifference.
A sharp pang of pain cut through Goku’s already stiff neck, and he braced himself against the bars on his right as he pushed himself to his feet. He was already confused and vulnerable. He wouldn’t look up to anyone here when he spoke to them, at least not because he was unable to stand under his own power. If it was one thing he learned about his own race, it was they preyed on those they viewed as weaker than themselves.
With this thought in mind, Goku pushed himself to his full height and squared his shoulders. He ignored the spinning in his head as best he could and trained his gaze on the Saiyajin who had spoken to him, though the expression in those hard eyes had changed in the seconds it’d taken him to get to his feet. All traces of amusement were gone, and now there was only the cold calculating stare of a predator as he sized up his prey.
Goku drew in a breath of stale air, but before he could utter a single word, the strange Saiyajin’s eyes cut away from him and focused on something behind him. It was subtle, but Goku could clearly see the look of alarm and he began to spring away from the bars he leaned against, but his movements were slow and clumsy. A large forearm passed in front of his face and secured itself around his throat, pressing him tightly to the bars and trapping him in place.
Goku instinctively reached up to pull the offending limb away, but it was like a mouse attempting to move a boulder. It wouldn’t budge. Howls began to fill his ears and the lack of oxygen brought back the throbbing in his temples with a vengeance. The crowd went wild as he attempted to kick back against the man who held him, but it did him no good. He could feel his attacker’s hot, moist breath splay across the back of his neck, and he reached back through the bars over his shoulder. If he could get a handful of hair maybe he could drive the man’s head into the steel rods that separated them--- stun him long enough to get himself free. His fingers strained for something solid to grasp onto, but he was blind and his attacker had the advantage. A larger hand wrapped around his own and squeezed. Had he had the air in his lungs to do so, Goku would have screamed in pain as the delicate bones ground together.
And then, just when the black spots began to dance across his vision, he was released. He dropped heavily to his knees and scrambled to the far side of his 5x5 prison in case another assault was launched, but none came. The reason became apparent when he turned to get a visual on the man who had nearly killed him. All the commotion had drawn who he assumed to be guards, and they had used something similar to electrical cattle prods to stun his attacker into releasing him.
Goku gripped the bars tightly as he drew heaving breaths into his starved lungs. He watched as the armored men, who resembled reptiles with their scaly brown skin and slitted eyes, attempted to subdue the man in the cage beside his own. Now that he could get a good look at him, it was no wonder he couldn’t free himself. The Saiyajin was huge! He stood at least six feet tall and was built like a mountain. His purplish/black hair cascaded down his back, and he roared with rage as another set of electrical prods found his flesh. Faster than he could blink, the enraged Saiyajin wrapped a massive hand around one of the weapons used to torment him and yanked the wielder against the bars of his cage. The reptilian man had no time to react before his neck was snapped like a twig. His limp body crumbled to the ground with a sickening ‘thud’, and the surviving guard blew into a whistle and disappeared down the aisle.
“That’s Brolli.”
Goku shivered as the scarred man behind him whispered into his ear. The other Saiyajin had crouched down behind him and a small voice in his head screamed to get away from the bars before the man repeated Brolli’s attack, but he was already frozen in the killer Saiyajin’s gaze when their eyes met. Brolli’s face was expressionless. You’d never know he’d just murdered one man and attempted it on another. Goku’s brow furrowed. His eyes. His eyes looked….sad.
When the larger Saiyajin looked away Goku seemed to regain the use of his body, as if he’d just been released from a trance. He quickly spun onto the balls of his feet and turned to face the man behind him. He remained crouched, ready to spring in any direction if need be. When he spoke, his voice was raspy. His throat was already bruising.
“Where am I?”
The Saiyajin chuckled as he tossed his hair over his shoulder and slowly rose to his full height. Despite the grin that curled the edges of his lips, his eyes remained cold and humorless.
“Hell.”
Goku’s brows drew together as his eyes strayed away from the man in front of him. His gaze moved along the rows of imprisoned Saiyajin. Some paced back and forth in their confined spaces like agitated animals often do in the zoo when they’re on the brink of madness. Others sat quietly and kept to themselves, while more bared their teeth aggressively and challenged anyone who dared meet their eye.
Goku’s frown deepened and he shifted his attention to the bars that held him captive. He slowly extended his arm and tapped them experimentally with his knuckle. They seemed like some sort of steel. Nothing special. So why didn’t any of them….
He inhaled sharply and his brows darted up into his bangs when he finally noticed the absence of his ki. Accessing it had become second nature to him, so he thought he had been drawing on it while he was being attacked. In the chaos he failed to notice the absence of the warm, sometimes burning aura that accompanied his power. It hadn’t been there.
He attempted to raise his ki. Nothing. Not even a flicker of power.
A chuckle drew his attention back to the scarred Saiyajin to his left.
“Finally noticed, did you? You’re a little slower than the others.”
Goku ignored the insult and rose from his crouched position. Black eyes turned down to inspect his body, hands roaming over his neck, wrists, chest--- anywhere they could have attached a ki draining device onto his person. Another chuckle evoked a growl from deep in his throat, and Goku turned his attention back to the amused Saiyajin.
“Do you have a name, or should I just call you Chuckles?” he barked. His patience was running thin and he was in no mood for games.
The scarred Saiyajin had the decency to look surprised for only a moment before he folded his arms over his chest and grinned. “Well, well, well. Looks like you might have some bark after all.” Black eyes moved past Goku and flickered to Brolli for only an instant before they returned. “But you’ll need more than that to survive here.”
Goku huffed in frustration as he patted down both his legs, still searching for any foreign objects. He encountered none, and that only increased his agitation. At least he would have an answer; an explanation, had he found something.
“Brox.”
The Earth raised Saiyajin looked up and cocked a brow. “What?”
The other man rolled his eyes, his voice dull and bored. “My name. It’s Brox.”
“…Oh.” The moment the word left his mouth Goku wanted to kick himself for the dimwitted reply, but he had been surprised the man had even answered his question. He’d been serious about calling him Chuckles. In an attempt to recover, he nodded his head in acknowledgement and offered his own name. “Goku.”
The strangeness of his Earth name registered on Brox’s face in the form of a confused frown, but the man seemed to get past it quickly with a barely noticeable shrug of his shoulder. Apparently it wasn’t worth his breath to inquire further. He just accepted it.
The simple introduction put Goku more at ease, and he felt his shoulders relaxing by just a degree. Men who planned to kill you didn’t normally make small talk, let alone introduce themselves. But then, the thought of having to defend himself raised another question, though before the words had even formed on his tongue, Brox was already answering.
“They implanted a chip under your skin. It can be anywhere on your body. It tracks your movements, monitors your vitals, and locks away your ki. You have nothing to fight with but your physical strength.”
Again Goku’s lips parted, but Brox held up his hand to silence him before he continued.
“Even if you found the chip, you couldn’t remove it without dropping dead. Unless the chip is deactivated prior to removal, tampering with it automatically sends an electrical current directly into your heart, stopping it instantly. You’ll be dead before you ever see the thing.”
Goku mouth snapped closed and he frowned. He wasn’t sure he’d get a real answer based on his last effort to attain the information, but he had nothing to lose at this point. “Where are we?”
For a moment Goku was sure Brox would repeat his sunshiny answer of ‘Hell’ from before, but it seemed this Saiyajin was full of surprises.
“We’re on the Ice-jin planet.”
His blood ran cold. Images of Frieza clouded his mind’s eye. He'd been ruthless and as cold blooded as his name suggested, and he hadn't contained an ounce of goodness within his black soul. Not only that, but his race as a whole seemed to hate Saiyajin, so if they were gathering the survivors together like this… Well, their intentions weren’t good.
Suddenly Goku wanted to pace the length of his modest space like the crazed men he had observed earlier. The impulse was so strong his left foot actually twitched before he regained control over it. Instead he crouched down and sat on his heels again.
“Why are they gathering us together this way? Why not just kill us?”
“Sport.”
Goku sat silently, waiting for Brox to explain himself further, but the scarred Saiyajin only turned away with a small shake of his head. He said nothing more.
