All of my life, at least the parts I remembered, I’d had the ability to travel through time. When I was younger, before I could control it, I would slip through times nearly every hour. Once I was older and more experienced, I could control the ability, but I couldn’t control what time or what place I showed up at. Back in the days I couldn’t control it, I only stayed for an hour, two at most. Now that I could control it, I stayed longer, played around, explored.
Because of my ability, I aged differently. My birthday was October 31st at 12:01 A.M. and I did not age unless I stayed in a place long enough to. Then if I did, I had to stay for a year more, but leave before my next birthday. So I would go what would feel like years without aging a single day. Sometimes I went days or hours. It was all uncontrollable.
I knew one thing about myself and had no idea how I had come to know it. I had not been born. I’d been created by someone. I was a creation, not a human. Because of this, I’d been borne with a lot of uncontrollable, sometimes unsteady powers. I was extremely powerful, but couldn’t control most of my powers. If I lost my temper, they got away from me and I couldn’t stop them. I had to be careful, had to be, or I lost myself, lost my reasoning. Everything.
Oh, yes. I knew my name. Story. I didn’t have a last or middle name, or not that I remembered, so I made up one for myself. Story Parsins. It was my favorite last name. Sometimes I used the last name, “Mathias,” though. The middle name I’d given myself was “Ebony.” I liked that name, but I wasn’t going to give up my real name for it. I needed to know my real name. It made me feel . . . I don’t know. Less like a creation and more like a person.
I knew nothing else about myself. I didn’t know what time or place I was originally from. I didn’t know if I was an Earthling or not. I didn’t believe I was, but I couldn’t figure out what else I could be. Most of the planets I’d been to had strange-looking aliens. I was strange, but not that strange.
From the top! I had long, silky silver hair that cascaded around me to land in a pool at my ankles when down and was a hassle putting up. Light blue eyes with long, thick, black lashes lacing them were upturned, alert. They were, in my opinion, my best feature. A small, upturning nose sat between high cheeks. My chin was slightly pointed, curved delicately, and my jaw line was strong, but delicate. My entire face was pale, with the exception of one thing: my lips. My face looked like someone had left out all possible color on my skin, but taken a bloody finger and rubbed it across my lips. I had crimson, full lips that definitely stood out against my paleness.
The rest of my body was just as pale. I had small, but square and hard, white shoulders. My arms were long, toned, pale. I had a long, thin waist that led to boyishly thin hips and long, muscular legs. Unlike the rest of my body, my chest wasn’t small. I had a size that was easily C-cup, but a small waist, I was very definitely top heavy. At the moment, I was wearing a pale blue, water-silk gown. The bodice was square, exposing my shoulders and breasts. My breasts were being squeezed and had been forced into the gown so that they felt like they were about to pop. The waist was cinched in enough that I was having problems breathing. The gown hugged my hips and fell into a pool at my feet.
It was 11:57 and I was tired, but I wanted to go. Needed to go. I’d been in this place for a year because I had gotten here on October 30th, 11:20 and didn’t know it. I finally found out what time it was at 12:00. Midnight. By then it was too late. So I had to stay another year. Where was I? I’m in the middle of France, in the middle of the renaissance times. For the first couple of hours, I had fun here in France. Then some jerk had “adopted” me and forced me into an engagement. I’d managed to talk him into waiting until October 31st, five A.M. to marry the aristocrat. Well, really, it wasn’t so much a marriage as it was a sale. A merchant that hadn’t very much money was selling me to an aristocrat that wanted me as a trophy wife.
12:00! Time to go! I focused my energy into my time traveling ability and that familiar twisty feeling filled my stomach and I was just suddenly standing in the middle of a huge field with teal grass and green water. It was a strange place, probably a different planet. I wanted to fly, but I couldn’t because I have giant, black, feathered wings. They would rip the gown if I tried to get them out. I didn’t know how well the dress would take to being ripped. It would probably fall to pieces. So I was forced to walk around.
About an hour later, I came to a small group of people that were fighting. My eyes widened. A small boy! A big, very muscular man with a mop of red hair was beating up on a small boy. I started to intervene, but stopped myself and went through the big man’s head, then the little boy’s head.
Reacoome was the big man’s name, Gohan was the smaller boy’s name. The bald one that was motionless on the ground was Kuririn and it looked as though his bones were broken. The short, black-haired man was Vejita. He looked beaten up, but not as bad as the other two. Kuririn and Gohan were with their companion-who wasn’t with them now-Burama and were looking for the Dragon Balls to bring their friends back to life. They were waiting on Gohan’s dad, Goku, to show up, but he had yet to have shown.
Reacoome, Butta and Jeice had lost their comrade and their leader, Captain Ginyu, had left for Furiza’s spaceship with the Dragon Balls. I had an idea. I knew how I could get them out of danger and get their Dragon Balls back. I just had to be fast. I burst into a run, keeping my power level down as low as I could until I was far enough away their scouters wouldn’t find me and raised my power level and speed so that I found Ginyu within seconds.
“Well, now, men, if you can touch the Dragon Balls, even just a little bit, you can join the illustrious Ginyu Force.” He dodged one man, kicked him away, dodged another man and shoved him away. “Come on, now, you can do better!” He ran out of people, settled down. “Ah, and I had such high hopes!”
I came into sight, raising my power level just slightly. “Excuse me, Captain Ginyu, might I try?”
He turned to look at me with a smirk. “You? Why, your power level is just 20,000.”
“I’m more than I look.”
“You can try, but don’t get your hopes up.”
I smiled. “Thank you, sir.” I crouched, concentrated on just my speed and my Glamour Magick, and launched at him. Before he’d blinked, I’d grabbed and exchanged the seven real Dragon Balls for rocks and had made the rocks look like Dragon Balls and hid the real Dragon Balls in the water. I kept two rocks for myself and stopped, waited for him to see.
He blinked, turning slowly. “How did you do that? You don’t look nearly that fast.”
“I’m more than I look,” I reiterated. “Much more. Would you like to see my true power?”
“What do you mean?”
“I suppress my real power so that when people see me, they see a small, seemingly weak girl and they underestimate me. Then it’s easy to take them out.” I concentrated on my power, forced it into a small space so nobody but Ginyu would see and so that everywhere around me was calm, but within a small, fifteen feet circle around my body, the wind was crazy, rocks were being lifted from the ground, small sparks of electricity erupted from my body and small pinpricks of light, like stars, surrounded me, filled the space around me. I looked up, into Ginyu’s eyes with a smirk.
“How’s that?” I murmured. I’d raised my power level to 115,000.
Shock filled his eyes. “That’s amazing. How are you concentrating your power into such a small space?”
“Experience. I do it so that nobody else can sense or tell my power level. I’ve survived this long by hiding my true powers.”
“How long have you been in Furiza’s army?”
“I just joined, actually. I was so glad when I heard Furiza was on planet Namek. To be honest, I’ve been searching for him for awhile. I willingly joined his army.”
“Oh? I presume you know where the armory is?”
“No, I don’t. I just got here a little while ago. I’ve been so busy practicing my moves and shaping my power so that when Lord Furiza sees me, I can really blow him away.”
He smirked. “You’re that new, really?”
I nodded. “Yes.”
“Well, you’ll have to pass the initiation to be in the Ginyu Force and, if you make it, you’ll meet Lord Furiza immediately after. I’ll make sure you do personally.”
I handed him the fake Dragon Balls. “Thank you, sir!”
“What is that you’re wearing, by the way?”
I made a face and he laughed. “Where I just came from, this was the customary way for women to dress. It’s so uncomfortable, it’s not even funny.”
“Well, then, let’s get you into some comfortable armor, shall we?”
“Thank you, sir!” I smiled genuinely this time. Anything to get out of this cursed dress!
He walked into the spaceship and I followed. “How far did you travel?”
“Honestly, I came from Earth.”
“Earth? Really? That weak planet?”
“Yes. I don’t think I’m an Earthling, though. It’s one of the reasons I’m here. I want to find out what I am and I figured that who would know better than Lord Furiza, right?”
He nodded. “Yes, of course, but wasn’t it a long journey?”
“Oh, yes! I lost count how many years I was on that stupid ship.”
“Years? What year did you leave?”
“1635. I built the ship myself.”
He turned to look at me. “Then you’re much, much older than you look because the year on Earth now is 1995.”
“1995? Dang. No wonder I was hungry when I got out!”
“How did you survive?”
“I’m immortal. I can’t die.”
“Really? How did you come upon this power?” he asked, interested.
“I was born with it.”
“How did you get a spaceship, by the way?”
“I built it.”
“You’re, uh, smart, then?”
“Apparently not smart enough if it took 360 years to get here.”
“So, uh, how did you know about Lord Furiza? He’s not that old.”
“I have visions of the future.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“You’ll be useful to us then. You’re powerful, immortal and psychic, right?”
“Yes.”
He came to a door, stopped. “In there is the armor. Will you need help to put them on?”
“No, I can manage. I wouldn’t want to waste more of your time, sir.”
“Captain Ginyu, please. And it was worth it. You’re much more than you seem. Hurry up or your initiation will pass.” He left.
I went in and looked around, opening lockers until I found my size. It was a miniature version of the big man’s outfit that exposed my legs and hips way too much, but I hadn’t no other choice. It took a few minutes, but I managed to get the gown and the underclothing off until I was clad in only my bra and panties.
And someone came in. He was small, green and wearing a white robe with a brown vest. He had green antennae. When he turned and saw me, his face got purple and blue with fear and embarrassment. “Oh, I’m so sorry!” he said, turning away. “I’ll leave.”
“Actually, wait a moment, please. I’ll need help in a second, Stay, just stay turned, please.” I studied the armor and hurried to put it on. Once I was dressed, I said, “Okay, turn.”
He turned. “W-w-what do you want?”
“You’re a Namekian, aren’t you?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
“You’re awful young. What are you doing in Furiza’s ship? I know you’re not partners with him.”
“No-nothing. I’m lost.”
I sighed, sat down. “Look, child, you can trust me. I’m not going to hurt you. You’re too young for me to kill. Just tell me what you’re here for or I’ll read your mind.”
He froze, backed up. “You’ll kill me.”
“Just spit it out, I won’t kill you. You have my word of honor.”
“You’re a friend of Furiza! You have no honor,” he spat.
I smiled gently. “Actually, I’m new, so I guess that part hasn’t quite worn off on me. I would never, in a million years, harm a child. I couldn’t.”
He seemed to believe me. “You promise?” he asked, eyes wide, searching mine.
“I swear it on my grave.”
“I’m here to help my friends get the Dragon Balls back I was going to steal them.”
“You’re in the wrong place, then. The Dragon Balls aren’t here. Not anymore.”
“I saw them out front.”
“Yes, but you didn’t see the real ones.” I sighed. “I don’t know you well enough to trust you, so I can’t tell you exactly what’s going on, but trust me when I say you should leave. You’ll get hurt.”
“I can’t let my friends down!”
I smiled again. “Please, for my conscience, leave here. Don’t return. Trust that the Dragon Balls are in a safe place. Don’t go to your friends. They’re in trouble. You need to just get out of here and head back to-” I searched his mind a bit. “Head back to Burama.”
He gasped, drawing back. “You know ab-about Burama?”
“Yes. If you really want to help your friends, get back to her. Protect her. Keep her safe. She’s too human to be wondering around unaided. Go back to her as fast as you can. I have the feeling she’s going to get into trouble without you.”
“I have to go to my friends.”
“No. Go to Burama. Your friends will be okay, but the longer you argue with me, the more danger you put them all in. Please, I’m begging you. Go back to Burama.” I sighed. “Look, kid. I’m going to let you in on a small secret. I can sometimes see the future and I’ve seen yours. If you go to your friends now, you will die. Furiza will kill you. Go to Burama both for her safety and yours, Dende. Gohan and Kuririn will be safe. I give you my word of honor.”
“O-Okay, fine. I’ll trust you, but you better not betray me!”
I went to the locker. “One thing first.” I pulled out a suit of armor in his size. “Put this on. You’ll need it. I leave you to yourself to get out. I have to get back or my promises to you won’t hold, but I’ll leave you with one gift.” I put my hand atop his head and focused my energy, my power, into and around the boy, creating an outward appearance of one of Furiza’s soldiers. I pulled away. “Look at yourself.”
He looked down and made a sound. “Why am I taller?! Why am I not green? What did you do!?”
“It’ll wear off in fifteen minutes, so I suggest you hurry and get out of here. It’s Glamour Magick. It makes you look like you’re one of Furiza’s people. It means you don’t have to sneak and take your time. You can go as you please. But it only lasts for fifteen minutes, so you must still hurry and get out. Do you understand?”
He nodded. “Why did you do it?”
“To keep you safe. Now hurry, get out of here. As fast as you can, but not too fast. It’ll look suspicious. If anyone talks to you, tell them you’re on a mission and can’t talk. Okay?” I left him there, left the boy to find his own way, and went back to Ginyu. He’d be safe.
I hoped.
Ginyu saw me and stopped pacing. “Hurry it up next time!”
“Sorry. It took awhile to get out of the gown.”
“I see. Anyway, here.” He tossed me a scouter. “Now you can talk to the rest of us. You need to get to where Jeice, Butta and Reacoome are before they kill off those people without scouters and Vejita. That’s part one of your initiation. Part two is you have to kill them. Got it?”
I put the scouter on quickly. “Uh, this may sound strange, but will you please, please do me a favor?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Me?”
“It’s important if I am to be able to do my initiation.”
“What is it?” he asked with a sigh.
“Thank you!” I turned. “Rip the back of this from my shoulders to my lower back, in an upside down ‘V’ formation. From my shoulder blades to the middle of my lower back. Start four inches apart and end one inch apart.”
“How is this important?”
“Just, please, trust me. It’ll make me much faster than I was before. You’ll see why in a few minutes.”
A sigh, then the sound of ripping. “There.”
I stepped away, turned and said, “You may want to stand back.”
“Are you saying you might hurt me?”
“No, I’m saying you might get blood splattered on you.”
“I don’t care. Go ahead.”
I closed my eyes, focusing my energy on my back, on my wings. Pain spread through my body, radiating from my back. I let out a pained sound.
“What the hell are you doing?”
I collapsed to my knees and the air filled with the thick, lovely scent of white magnolia. The scent of my blood. I could feel that familiar wetness spreading across my back, heard it hitting the ground.
“Why are you bleeding? What are you doing?!”
“One . . . second . . . please. . . .” I could feel my skin tearing, could feel my wings poking out.
He started to walk behind me, started to try to see where the blood was coming from.
“No, no! Stay back!” I held up a hand. “Please. Then you may get hurt.”
He stopped, stood back.
Inch by painful, painful inch, my wings came out. Finally, my wings slid out easily for the last four feet. My wings flung out and I flicked them several times. Blood flew from my wings. I panted, kneeling for a moment more. Then I forced myself to my feet, swaying a bit. “Okay, thanks. I’ll--” I collapsed just a bit, my wings holding me up. “Goddamn, that takes a lot out of me. Thanks.” I flicked my wings again.
He stared at my wings. “They’re, uh, huge.”
My wings were fifteen feet tall, ten feet wide, black as night and feathered. And very ticklish. I took a deep breath. “Yeah, yeah, they are, aren’t they?”
“Can I, uh, feel them?”
“Go ahead.”
He came closer and ran a hand over my wingtip. “They’re very soft.”
“Yeah.”
He backed away. “Well, I’ll inspect them better later. You have an initiation to go to.”
I jumped up, wings flapping hard enough the fake Dragon Balls and the ship started to waver, fly off a bit. I left him to secure the area and started to fly as fast as I could, ignoring the dizzy, still painful feeling. Earlier, it had taken minutes to get to Ginyu from the fight. Now it took seconds to get from Ginyu to the fight. When I landed, everyone who could stand and see me stared at me.
Butta stammered, “G-Ginyu didn’t say you-you were so, uh, uhhh, small.”
I smiled. “You mean, he didn’t say I was a girl.”
“Yeah, that’s what he means,” Reacoome said.
I looked around and saw the little boy on the ground, motionless. It seemed his neck had been broken. I panicked, but it was okay. His energy was fading, fast, but he wasn’t dead. Not yet. I needed to get to Kuririn first. “I’ll finish them off now.” I strolled quickly to the motionless Kuririn, knelt down. I threw the scouter away and, when it was gone, I whispered, “Hey, Kuririn, are you okay?”
“You kn-know my name?”
I nodded. “Yes. I know much more than that, too. I’m going to need to do something and you’re going to have to play along.”
“Oh, like I’m going to-”
“You want to live, don’t you?” I hissed.
He was silent a moment, then sighed. “Yes.”
“Good. Now I’m going to back up a bit and shoot a Ki-blast at you-”
“You’re going to kill me!”
“No, shush! I’m going to shoot a Ki-blast at you and you’re going to scream and act like you’re dead when you stop screaming. Got it?” When he nodded, I backed up and turned to look at the Ginyu Force. “You didn’t leave much of them, did you?”
“We were told not to wait.”
I sighed and concentrated 50,000 points of my power into the palm of my hand.
Kuririn’s heart and breathing sped up and his eyes widened. “What are you doing? You can’t do this!” I think he actually believed I was going to kill him.
That worked for me. I shot the blast at him, watched as he was engulfed in that power. He screamed, but it was more in fear than pain.
His eyes widened and he stared at me in shock. He stopped screaming moments before my energy left him and, like I told him to do, he remained motionless, dead. His injuries should be gone now because I had shot him not with a killing blast, but with a blast of my own life-force, with my own energy. It healed him.
I turned and looked at the boy. I was afraid to touch him. What if I killed him? But I had to take that chance. Had to. I went closer and could feel the eyes of everyone, even Kuririn, on my back as I knelt by the boy. I placed my hands on his chest and folded my wings around the two of us. He would take a lot of power to heal. I focused 300,000 points of power into my hands, into his body, force-fed my life-force into the boy’s motionless, nearly dead body. I forced my life into him, forced my energy into him. If he died, he would take me with him. Containing my power within my black, black wings made the inside brighten to white, brighten until I had to close my eyes.
I could feel my energy leaving me, could feel it filling up the boy. I collapsed against my wings, but kept my hands on his chest, kept pushing my energy into his body until I felt his heart beating harder, felt him start to move. I removed my hands, eyes closing. The light faded.
I felt him sit up, felt him shake his head. “Wh-what happened?”
I opened my eyes, saw him looking at me.
“Why did you do that? Why did you save me? Aren’t you working for Furiza?”
“No. I just went in so I could get the Dragon Balls from him.”
“What?”
“I hid the Dragon Balls from him.”
He stood up. “Where? We need to find them.”
“Not yet. Lie down. You need to pretend that you’re not alive. Pretend you’re dead. It’s your only real chance, okay?”
“We can take them now, can’t we?”
I sighed. “I’ve used a lot of energy today. I don’t know how much longer I can hold up, so I don’t know. If I can’t take it, if I lose to them, then they’ll still think you’re all dead. That’s my plan.”
He furrowed his brow. “We won’t just let them kill you. We’ll step in.”
“Don’t step in. This is my choice.”
A man’s voice called out, “Gohan! Where are you?”
Gohan’s face brightened. “It’s my daddy! We’ll be okay now. Now everything will be okay! Really, it will! My dad’s here!” He looked around. “But where are we?”
I folded back my wings. “I had my wings surrounding us.” I leant forward, hand flat on the ground, panting. There was suddenly an arm around each shoulder, holding me up. I looked up. Kuririn had my right side, Gohan had my left. “What are you doing?”
“You helped us, now we’re helping you.”
“What’s going on?” Reacoome’s voice drifted to us. “That bald one was dead--so was the kid! I killed the kid myself.”
A tall, black-haired man knelt before me. “Kuririn told me what you did. I want to thank you. If you hadn’t shown up when you did . . . I don’t know what would’ve happened.” He fished a small bag out of his shirt, got a bean out of it and held it out to me. “Take it, eat it. You’ll feel better once you’ve eaten it.”
I took it, put it in my mouth, swallowed it. My energy returned tenfold. I felt much better. I sighed. “Thank you.”
“No, thank you. Really.” He smiled. “Kuririn said he wasn’t sure Gohan would’ve lived much longer if it hadn’t been for you.”
“I’m sure he’d have been just fine. You have a fighter on your hands here. He’s a strong young man.” I smiled at Gohan, ruffling his hair a bit.
He blushed, smiling. “Thanks.”
“Takes after his old man!” Kuririn said, laughing.
“Hey! I’m not old.” He smiled.
“Hey! We’re talking to you!” Jeice yelled. “What’s going on? I thought you were dead?”
I pushed to my feet. “Yeah, well, you didn’t account for me. How could you do that to a child?”
“You’re supposed to be on our side!”
“Yeah, supposed to be, I suppose.” I smiled. “Or I could’ve been duping you from the beginning.”
“You wouldn’t have lied to us. You couldn’t have.”
“Want to bet on that?” I cupped my hands and focused 300,000 of my power into a Ki-blast the size of a watermelon. I backed up just a small amount of space and gave a swift, strong kick to the middle of the blast. It went flying, split into three parts and hit each of them.
Their bodies erupted in light for a moment and, when the light faded, they were headless.
“Whoa! You’re a lot stronger than you look,” Kuririn said, smiling.
“You’re here! You made it! You kept your promise!” a small, male voice called. “You really kept your promise!”
I turned and the young, Namekian boy ran over to me. “What are you doing here? I told you to stay with that woman.”
“He did stay with me,” a female voice said. “It was my idea to come here. When he told me about you, told me what you said, I had to meet you.” A woman with short, blue hair came over to me. “And it’s just a bonus that Goku finally got here!”
“Hi, Burama! I’m sorry it took so long.” He scratched his head. “I kind of got thrown off of course when I ran into some meteors.”
“Oh, it’s fine. As long as you finally got here. But next time don’t get thrown off course!”
“Uh, you shouldn’t be here, Burama. You should get back to the cave.”
“Yeah, probably so, but I wanted to meet her.” She really looked at me for the first time and saw the wings. Her eyes widened. “Oh, dear. They’re . . . big.”
“And soft,” Gohan said. When I looked at him, he smiled. “I touched them while you were pretty much unconscious.”
“You did? I didn’t feel it.”
“Well, you were unconscious.”
“No, I wasn’t. I only closed my eyes for a second.”
“Your eyes were closed for a good five minutes before I said anything.” He flashed a smile. “I was trying to be quiet so I wouldn’t wake you, but I couldn’t wait any longer.”
I took a deep breath, walked over to get my scouter and picked it up. “Be noisy, like you’re fighting,” I whispered, putting the scouter on. While they pretended they were fighting, I pretended I was out of breath and injured. “Captain Ginyu, Captain Ginyu, come in!”
“What is it, new recruit?”
“Something went horribly wrong. Everything was fine until a few minutes ago and this man showed up. He gave some strange beans to the people that we killed and now they’re alive and the rest of the Ginyu Force has been killed. I’ve been injured.”
“Who is the man that showed up?”
“I don’t know. He’s tall with black hair and wearing an orange outfit.”
“I’ll be there in a few minutes. Keep up the fighting. And good luck.” His end went silent.
I took the scouter off and threw it, hard. “There. Goku, do you think you can handle Captain Ginyu yourself?”
“Vejita and I can handle him, right, Vejita?” He threw a bean at him.
He caught it. “What’s this?”
“Eat it. It’ll heal you. It’s a senzu bean.”
He ate it and a few seconds later, he looked and held himself better. “Well, now, that’s an interesting little thing.”
“Why, what’s up?”
“I’m going to take the Kuririn, Gohan and Burama to look for the Dragon Balls. I threw them, so it might take a few minutes.”
“Oh, so that’s why you tricked Ginyu to get him here!” Goku smiled. “That’s pretty smart.”
“With Ginyu here, we should be able to find the Dragon Balls with little to no trouble.” Folding my wings against my back, I walked between Goku and Kuririn, going far enough that I could unfold and flick my wings. “You guys coming?” I asked, jumping into the air.
Kuririn grabbed Burama and he and Gohan lifted into the air behind me.
“Dende, stay out of sigh. It’s for your safety.” I took off, keeping my power level low and flying as high up as I could. Chances were Ginyu would fly lower than we were. In case of any difficulties, I put a barrier up to keep our power levels masked. “Feel free to go as fast as you can. I’ve put up a barrier so our power levels won’t be sensed.”
When I said that, Gohan’s speed greatly increased and he was keeping up with me. It was a bit of a struggle for him to keep up, but he managed it all the same. “Come on, Kuririn!”
Kuririn lagged behind a bit, but he was carrying someone. “You sure they won’t sense us?”
“Perfectly. We should start to land now, though, just in case. It’s close enough we can walk the rest of the way.” I quickly descended and was on the ground in moments.
Gohan landed seconds after I did and Kuririn after him. Burama pulled out a device. “This is the Dragon Ball radar. It’ll show us where the Dragon Balls are.” She clicked it on, studied it. “A few hundred feet that way.” We walked along the edge of the water until Burama stopped. “There!” She pointed at the water. “They’re all around there.”
I pulled in my wings. Pulling in my wings was faster and easier than pushing them out. And much less painful and exhausting.
“You can keep your wings inside your body?” Gohan asked.
“Yeah. It takes some energy to keep them inside, more than it takes to keep them out.
However, it’s a bit easier to keep them inside because I can do things with them inside my body that I can’t do with them out.” I went to the edge of the water and looked in. It looked deep. And cold.
Two blurs went passed me. Gohan and Kuririn dove into the water. They’d both stripped down to their boxers.
I backed away from the water. “I-oh . . . I-I didn’t think this through.”
“What’s wrong?”
I backed further from the water. “I-I can’t swim.”
“Honestly? You can’t swim?” she asked.
“No. I never learnt.”
“We can teach you.”
I backed further away. “No, no, I-I’m good. No.”
Gohan surfaced with a Dragon Ball under each arm, put both on the ground and dove back in. Moments later, Kuririn came up with two. Before Kuririn could dive in, Gohan came up. “I need you two. I found the remaining three. I can carry one, you two can get the other ones.”
I took one step forward, froze, shook my head. “I-I, uh. . . .”
“I’ll go. I want to go,” Burama said, walking to the water. She handed the Dragon Radar to me. “There. I’ll be right back.” She dropped into the water with the other two. “I’ll be right back.”
I stood there, grateful to Burama for doing that, angry at myself for being unable to face my fear. When the three of them came out, I had composed myself and was sitting on the ground, one knee bent up, the other leg curled beneath me. I stood. “It seems Furiza’s ship is going to be deserted now. We may as well stay there.” I picked up two Dragon Balls and balanced one more atop the other two.
Gohan, Kuririn and Burama each took up the rest of the Dragon Balls and we walked to the ship. “So, you never did tell us your name.”
Hadn’t I? “I didn’t?”
“No.”
“Oh, well, um, my name is Story.”
“Story? What an unusual name!” Burama exclaimed. “Story. I’ve never known anyone named that.”
I blushed. “Well, uh, yeah. That’s my name.”
“I like it, actually. It’s unique, like you are,” Gohan stated.
“I think it’s a weird name, but it is pretty.” Kuririn smiled down at me. “How old are you, Story?”
“Uh, me? I’m eighteen.”
“Eighteen? You don’t look it.”
“She’s shorter than you are, Kuririn,” Gohan said. “How tall are you?”
“I’m four feet, eleven inches tall.”
“She’s only two inches shorter than I am. I’m five, one.”
“But she’s still shorter.”
“Yeah, yea, I’m short. Bite me.” They laughed at that comment. “What?”
“I don’t think we’re going to bite you.”
“Too bad for you then. My blood can strengthen you,” I retorted.
“Hm? What?” Burama asked, confused.
“My blood increases the drinker’s power.”
“By how much?”
“Depends on how much you drink.”
“Give an example.”
“One swallow, your power doubles. Two, your power triples their previous levels. Three, quadruples. I’m sure you see the pattern.”
“Oh, I certainly do,” a voice said from behind us. We turned and saw Vejita. “Are you being honest?”
I nodded. “Yes, why?”
“Don’t you see? This is an excellent time to increase our powers! Think of it, having our powers multiplied. That would give us enough powers to get rid of Furiza!”
Gohan stood in front of me. “Nobody’s going to hurt her, Vejita.”
“Come on, boy! Don’t be foolish! This is our chance!”
I sighed. “You know, he’s right.”
Gohan made a sound and looked back at me while Vejita smirked. “What?!”
“We’re not going to kill you, or hurt you. You saved our lives!”
“It won’t kill me and you’re not the first people to drink my blood. With powerful enough blood, I can heal anything. Drink from my blood, cut yourselves and let me drink your blood and I’ll be healed right up, if you’re powerful enough.”
“How powerful would we have to be?” Kuririn asked.
“At least 2/3’s as powerful as I am.”
“And how powerful are you, exactly, girl?”
“Honestly? My powers top off at 30,000,000.”
“Impossible! Nobody’s got that much power.”
“Whoa! Are you being serious?”
“With that, we can defeat Furiza!”
“She’s lying. She’s not that powerful. Nobody is.”
“But what if she’s not?”
“Then Furiza would have twice that! Furiza is the most powerful creature in the universe!”
Gohan and Kuririn looked at each other. “If she has that power and Furiza has more,” Kuririn started.
“Then we’re all doomed.”
“Mhm.”
“So that’s why we drink her blood.”
Kuririn looked at me. “Are you sure about this?”
I shrugged. “I don’t care.”
“In order for us to be able to heal you, at least one of us has to take a considerable amount of blood,” he informed me.
“Yes, I realize that.”
“I think Gohan should take the most, being that he’s the youngest.”
“What?! That’s why he shouldn’t take the most! Are you nuts? He’s a kid! What will he do against Furiza?”
“None of you get to decide who takes most,” I said, sighing.
“Then you decide?”
“No-well, not exactly. My power and my blood decides. It chooses the most capable person to give the most to. It chooses the one that would handle that amount of power best.”
With a gulp, Kuririn looked back at Vejita, who was smirking. “That would be him, though! He’d kill us all!”
“Nonsense. I’d at least let the girl live. She’d prove to be useful,” he spat.
“Don’t talk about her like that! She’s not a tool!” Gohan defended.
Vejita studied the boy. “What does it matter to you, boy?”
“She saved our lives, Vejita. At least respect her.”
He smirked. “Aw, I believe the child has his first crush. What say you, Kuririn?”
“I say he’s right,” Kuririn enforced, looking back at the blushing boy. “She saved our lives. The least you could do is respect her.”
“I think you’re all nuts!” Burama put in.
Vejita’s cold, penetrating gaze caught hers and she backed up. “I didn’t ask you.”
I stepped before Burama. “She’s a part of the group, like it or not.”
“But she won’t be taking any blood.”
“No, maybe not, but she’s still a part of us.”
“Story’s right, Vejita. She’s one of us.”
“Whatever! We’re wasting time. Let’s get this over with!”
“Hey, wait!” Burama said quickly. “Weren’t you supposed to stay with Goku and help him fight?”
“Tch. Kakarot is doing surprisingly well. Even I can’t hold my own against Ginyu. I am no help to him, not with as well as he’s doing.” He stared at me. “Now, how are we going to take your blood? Being Saiyans, or, in the case of Gohan, beings with Saiyan blood, we have sharp teeth. We can easily break your skin. As for Kuririn, what of him?”
I bent down and pulled the knife I’d hidden in my boot out. “Use this.”
“Good. Now can we get on with this?” He stepped closer to me.
I knelt, handed Kuririn the knife, gave him my arm. “Anywhere on my arm.”
“As for me?” Vejita said, creeping closer.
I hesitated. One of the other two would get my other arm while the other would get my throat. My arm was such a normal place while my throat . . . now that was another story. That was an intimate place. I didn’t want Vejita that close to me, but I didn’t want a five-year-old there, either. “Vejita, you take . . . I’ll give you my other wrist.” I held it out to him.
“Wait,” Burama said, coming a bit closer. “I know this is weird, but . . . I want . . . I want to try.”
I looked up at her, shocked. “What?”
She gulped. “I know this is crazy and disgusting, but I really do want to . . . that is, if it would work for me.”
“Yes, of course it would.”
She edged closer. “And I have a better way than this.”
I wanted to hug her. “How?”
“It’ll require one of you three to take me back to the cave.”
“I’ll do it,” Kuririn volunteered. “But why?”
“Instead of feeding on her like that,” she shuddered, “how about we use glasses?”
The urge to hug her intensified. “I think that would work, but then we would need more knives. One for each of you. Unless,” I said sarcastically, “you two Saiyans still want to use your teeth?”
“No, knives will do,” Gohan said eagerly. “I’d rather not bit you, anyway. It seems mean.”
I did hug him. “Thanks, kid.”
He blushed.
“Okay, ready?”
“I’ll take you, Burama,” I said, standing up. “But give me a few minutes, okay? I need to get my wings back out.”
“You? But-but who’ll guard the-the Dragon Balls from Vejita?!” Kuririn asked.
“I’ll only be gone a moment. It shouldn’t take too long. Actually, I probably don’t need my wings out. I can probably run her there.”
“You’ll need to fly over water,” Burama said quickly.
I winced, tried not to. “I can jump over the water.” I went to her, knelt. “Jump on. I’ll need my hands free, so you’ll need to hold on yourself. Can you do that?”
She hesitated. “I-I think so.” She hopped onto my back, wrapping her legs around my waist, arms around my neck, locking both her arms and legs. “Okay. Ready.”
I grabbed one of her wrists in my hand and took off running. “Just in case you lose your grip, I’ll still have hold of you.”
“Thanks.”
“No, I should be thanking you. You saved me from having to admit I couldn’t swim and--thank you--now you’ve saved me from having Vejita’s mouth near me.”
She laughed. “You’re welcome.”
“I’ll be picking up speed now, but I won’t be at full speed. I’m letting you adjust to the speed.”
“Thanks.” Her grip tightened. “Ready.”
I picked up speed. “So what made you decide to take blood?”
“I’m sick of always having to be rescued! I want to have at least some power, so I can help myself when I really need it, you know?”
I smiled. “Yeah, I know. I can train you a bit, too, while I’m here.”
“That’d be--while you’re here? You’re leaving?”
“I have to.” I explained about the time-traveling thing briefly. “If I stay in a time too long, I’ll be forced to stay for a year, or longer.”
“Oh, wow. You’re really . . . unique, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I guess so. You know, I never had a family? I was never borne into one.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I wasn’t borne at all. I was created.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do know that. I don’t know why or how, but it’s something I’ve always known. One of my earliest memories from is from when I was really young, from when I was a toddler, younger than two, actually. I remember being in a tank filled with water and I remember people outside it, talking. Saying something about letting ‘her’ out now. I remember being taken out and I heard them talking about how they would deal with their creation, but that’s the last thing I remember from them.”
“That’s sad. You never had a family? Really? You were never raised by one?”
“Other than that memory, I have no memories of being around other people. In all my other memories, I’m alone, on my own, taking care of myself. I’ve always been alone, always been taking care of myself. It’s always been like that.”
“That’s sad. Do you think we’ll ever see you again, after you leave?”
“I don’t know. I can’t control where or when I go.”
“Why don’t you just stay with us?”
I hesitated. “I-I can’t. I want to find out more about myself, you know? I want to find out what I truly am, where and when I’m really from. Who I really am. You know?” I sighed. “Once I find where I’m meant to be, where I’m really, truly from, where my home is, I’m going to stay there. I want to be home. I want to go were I belong.” I sighed again. “I know, it sounds crazy.”
“No, no. I . . . I totally understand. I think Gohan will be heartbroken when you leave, though.” She gave a small chuckle. “I think he really likes you.”
“Of course. I saved his life, his friend’s life. Of course he likes me.”
“No, I mean, I think Vejita’s right. I think you’re his first crush.”
I blushed. “He’s five. He’ll forget me.”
“I don’t know about that. That kid is something special. I think you’re leaving will break his little heart. He’ll never forget you. I’ll never forget you. Kuririn will never forget you. Goku will never forget you.”
“I’m sure they’ll get over it.” I sighed. “Picking up speed again. Ready? I’ll be going full speed soon. I’ve been picking up speed very gradually for awhile. Next time I pick up speed, we’ll be going full speed.”
“I’m ready. I wish you would stay, but I understand why you won’t.” She ducked her head against my shoulder. “Oh, damn, the wind is strong,” she said, voice weak from the wind.
“Sorry.” I picked up speed, legs working to go full speed. “First jump coming, hold tight!” She tightened her arms, holding on as tight as she could and I put my arms backward, around her waist, holding her. “Okay, here . . . we . . . go!” I jumped across a good five hundred feet of water, landed, taking the landing gently, carefully. “There. That was easy.”
“You know, I never thought about it before, but I never did tell you the directions. How do you know where to go?”
“I read minds. I’ve been reading the directions in yours for awhile now.”
“Oh, that’s, uh, pretty cool.”
“I should warn you. I forgot to say it before. When someone takes my blood, they gain abilities from me. They gain an ability with every swallow of my blood.”
“Really? What abilities will we gain?”
“I don’t know. I can’t control what they get, but it’s a double-edged sword there. I gain abilities from whoever I drink blood from.”
“That’s pretty cool.”
“Hey, we’re almost there.” I slowed down to a jog, looking closely at the caves. “We’re here.” I set her down. “Okay, go on in. I’ll wait here.”
She ran in and came back out moments later with a bag filled with plastic cups. “I got five cups and five knives. One for each of us.”
I nodded. “Okay, good. Let’s get back.”
She jumped onto my back again, holding on tightly with the bag in her hand. It dangled below my chin, the glasses clinking together.
“Hold on as tight as you can. I’m starting off at full speed. We’ll be there in a matter of seconds.” Not long enough to go back to talking about me staying with them. I took off, holding onto her with my arms backwards again, going at top speed. I pushed myself faster and faster and the jump came by and was gone in a second. Within twenty seconds, I was skidding to a halt in front of Kuririn, Gohan and Vejita. I tripped over my own feet and nearly dropped Burama, but caught myself with my hands. “Oh, wow. Good thing we didn’t fall!”
She hopped off. “All right. I got five cups, five knives.”
“Five? But, Burama, there are only four that will be drinking.”
“One for Story for when she needs to drink from one of you.” She smiled. “Okay, I think I’m ready.”
“The cups aren’t just so they don’t have to suck it directly from me, are they?” I asked with a small smile. “They’re to help you pretend it’s not blood, aren’t they?”
She nodded. “Yes.”
“Okay, then, let’s get back to business. Vejita, take a knife. You’ll go first.” He grabbed a knife, a cup and stood before me. I sat down, back against a random tree. “Okay, push your power into the knife, through the knife. Use the knife as a conductor, an extent of your powers. Understand?”
“Yes. I understand perfectly.” He pushed his powers into the knife, brought it to my wrist and cut down, slicing across.
The dark liquid welled to the surface nearly instantly. I held his cup under my wrist, catching the blood in the cup. “Take one swallow at a time. Fill your mouth, then swallow. Got it? Oh, one more thing. Once you‘re done, you‘ll feel some pain. The more blood you drank, the more pain you‘ll feel.”
He nodded, taking the glass. “Of course.” The glass was half full. He raised it to his lips, took a large swallow. Four more swallows and the glass was empty. He dropped to his knees immediately after, groaning, clutching his head.
“You three sure that you can handle this?” I asked, looking at Gohan.
He stepped forward. “I can handle this. I didn’t train with Piccolo for nothing!” He knelt before me. “If you can handle this, I can.”
I stared at him, torn. “Fine, but you last. That way if you want to change your mind, you can. Okay?”
He nodded solemnly. “Yes, but I won’t change my mind.”
“Do me next, I want to make sure I don’t change my mind.” Burama knelt beside Gohan, holding a knife and the cup. “I’m ready.”
I took hold of her hand, forcing what power she had into the knife, then led her to a new spot on my wrist. “Cut.”
She wavered a bit, but sliced across my wrist.
I held the cup under my wrist. It filled ¾’s of the way up. “You sure, Burama?”
Taking a deep breath, she nodded. “Yes.” She raised the cup to her lips, took large swallows. Seven swallows altogether and her cup was empty. She set it down and lay back. Moments later, she was writhing, struggling and panting against the pain.
Kuririn came over. “I’m ready.” He pushed his power into the blade, cut my wrist and held the cup under the flow of my blood. His cup filled up less than Burama’s but more than Vejita’s. Shaking just a bit, he drank the blood down. Six swallows. He curled against the pain just as Burama did.
I looked over at Gohan. I was a bit dizzy by now. “You can change your mind any time now.”
He shook his head, held his knife up and pushed his power into it all at the same time. “I’m no coward. Simple pain is not going to dissuade me from my decision.” He cut across my wrist quickly.
I held his cup under my wrist, but my hands were shaking now. I blinked and, when my eyes opened, Gohan’s hands were around mine, helping me hold onto the glass. Random thought: His hands were nearly the same size as mine. Then again, I had small hands and feet. Small everything. I had enough of myself left to notice that Gohan’s cup had filled nearly to the brink, nearly overflowing, before my wound stopped bleeding. My wrist had two cuts on it now. The ones made by Vejita and Burama had healed already while Kuririn’s was a pink, new scar and Gohan’s was still an angry welt.
“Story, can you hear me?“ he asked. I watched his lips move, but the words, his voice, came not from him, but disembodied from him, separate from his moving mouth.
I nodded once I was able to hear his question fully. “Yes.” My voice, too, was disembodied.
“Do you have sharp teeth?”
I nodded again.
“Okay.” He downed the glass in nine swallows and his face instantly contorted in pain. He fought the pain back, but it shone in his eyes as he put his wrist against my lips. “Bite down. Now.”
The spicy, yet sweet scent of his blood filled me until I could taste it without biting down. My bloodlust rose with a roar and, against all my better instincts, I took his offered wrist and, fighting myself the entire way, bit down. His blood filled my mouth and it was spicy with an edge of sweetness to it. It was delicious. I drank his blood down until my senses returned and I returned to my former, sensible self. I pushed away from him, horror in my eyes. What had I done? I’d drank from a child! That was foolish!
And the familiar pain filled my body. I didn’t know how much of his blood I’d swallowed, but it had to have been at least two swallows because each swallow had healed a cut. I knew I hadn’t drank much, which meant the boy would be more powerful than ever anticipated since his blood had healed me with only two swallows and strengthened me with the remaining blood. I felt my power multiplying until I had a power not even I had thought possible.
If my power had gone to this heights, then his powers were higher still. My powers had increased to 21,600,000,000. His powers, I feared, would be more unstable than mine ever were. And mine would be even more unstable. Why had his cup filled to such an extent? That child couldn’t possibly control the amount of power he had to have now! He could barely control hi-oh, that’s why. He’d been oppressing his powers all along. He was always suppressing his powers unless he’s pissed. He just didn’t know that. He couldn’t control it, but he could keep it locked up until he needed it. That would be why. I wondered what his power level would read as until he got that pissed.
I occupied my mind with these thoughts, these random wonderings, until the pain wore off and I was able to move. I realized my head was on someone’s lap and someone was playing with my hair. When I could force my eyes to focus, Burama was the one whose lap I was in, the one who was playing with my hair.
She smiled down at me. “I feel amazing.”
“Powerful?”
“Unbelievably. Now I see why they’re always training! I’m a bit behind them now, but my goal is to catch up!”
“Shall we start that training, then?” I pushed myself to my feet, looked around to make sure everyone was okay.
Vejita was off by himself, smirking about his new powers and Gohan and Kuririn were off sparring, getting used to their newfound strength. Gohan’s power level had a reading of 34,000,000, but I knew it was much, much higher than that, otherwise his blood would not have healed me, let alone have strengthened me. Kuririn’s power had gone up to 28,800,000 and Vejita’s had gone to 36,000,000.
Burama stood, too. “How come you have your hair in the bun? Why haven’t you taken it out?”
“Because my hair falls to the ground. It’s only ever been trimmed of dead ends, never really cut.”
“Really? Why not?”
“I never really wanted to. I like long hair.” I turned to face her. “Anyway, what about that training?”
“Dad!” Gohan suddenly yelled out.
I turned. Goku, wearing--strangely enough--a scouter, came into view. He walked awkwardly, like he was injured, but there wasn’t a scratch on him.
Gohan started to run to his father, but stopped before he’d gone two steps. “Dad?” His voice was uncertain.
“What do you want, boy?” Goku asked, but it wasn’t his voice.
It was Captain Ginyu’s voice. Gohan and Kuririn came back to me. “Story, go through his head. See what happened,” Kuririn whispered.
I rifled through his head and saw it. “He’s not Goku. Get away from him! He’s Captain Ginyu. He did something and switched bodies with Goku!”
The real Goku came into sight, injured, in Ginyu’s real body. “Gohan,” he gasped.
I almost ran to him, almost, but I stopped myself. “Captain Ginyu, why go for Goku when you can go for someone stronger than he is?” I questioned. “Unless your original intent was to go for me?”
Gohan looked between me and his father’s body. “What? No, he can’t go for you! You’re”--he caught himself here and said, instead, “you’re important to us.” Real panic was shining in his eyes.
Ginyu glared at me in Goku’s body. “You--you lied to me. You’re much, much more powerful than you said you were. You’re more powerful than anyone else here.”
My eyes involuntarily flicked to Gohan and I almost corrected him, almost said that I had been the strongest, but I’d been passed up.
He nodded at me. “I know that you’re the strongest. You’re the one I want, you’re right about that, but I was hoping in Goku’s body--Change now!” he yelled, hoping to trick us into it.
But I’d overestimated my abilities and underestimated his. I thought I could dodge it, could push the real Goku in front of me, but I couldn’t move. I was paralyzed.
Luckily, Goku was not. He launched as fast as he could at me, hitting me just before Ginyu’s attack reached me. He was hit instead. Success and triumph filled his eyes and he smiled as his soul was put back into his own body.
Ginyu’s real eyes faded, then returned with an angry scowl. He turned back to me and, as soon as they’d been switched, he yelled again, “Change n-” His body jerked, he grunted.
Gohan’s fist went through his body easily, easier than a sharp knife through soft, melted butter. He jumped back, focusing his power into his hands and, calling out, “Mosenko-HA!” he shot a large blast at Ginyu. The blast had a power level of 40,000,000. Ginyu’s body disintegrated and Gohan stared, shocked, at his hands. “How . . . how did I do that?”
Vejita, Goku, Kuririn and Burama all stared at the boy. They were all, even Burama, able to sense the huge increase in power that boy had just gone through. “Gohan,” Goku mumbled, “where did you . . . where did you get that power?” He looked around at everyone. “Everyone here has gotten so much stronger, but how? What happened?”
Kuririn laughed. “You should see the look on your face. It was her, it was Story.”’
“What did you do?” He stared at me.
“All they had to do was drink my blood and that was pretty much all I did.”
“Drinking your blood caused that?”
I nodded.
“You should do it, dad. I did it.”
“I see that.” He walked closer. “I suppose that with your power levels, I won’t be needed.” He laughed. “Wow. Yeah, I’ll do it. I haven’t much choice if I want to keep up with my son over there.”
Vejita was still staring at the boy. He clearly didn’t like it that Gohan’s Ki-blast had had a higher level of power to it than he had. I heard him think, Where did that boy get that power? How much blood did he drink?
Goku walked closer and Burama handed him a knife and a cup. “What do I do?”
“Push your power through the knife and cut me with it. My blood and power will decide how much power you can handle and it’ll fill your cup up with that much. With one swallow, your power doubles. Two, it triples the previous level. Three, it quadruples the level before that.”
“Cool.” He ran his power through the blade and ran it lightly over my wrist. Blood welled up and I held the cup under my wrist. It filled halfway up and he drank it quickly in five swallows, then doubled over in pain. “You didn’t say it would hurt!”
Oops. I’d forgotten. “Sorry! It fades quickly.” Kind of. I watched him writhe until he stopped and stood up. “The pain is from your powers increasing at a rapid rate and your body strengthening itself to be able to handle that amount of power.” Goku’s power had gone up considerably. 216,000,000 was his new level. “Your glass filled to Vejita’s level, five swallows.”
“I feel . . . I feel downright incredible.”
Vejita scowled. “We’re still wasting time. We need to make our wishes.”
Dende flew over. He’d heard Vejita’s comment. “What do you mean, ‘our’ wishes? You’re not going to make one, are you?”
He glared at the Namekian boy. “Does it matter?”
Goku lifted two Dragon Balls. “Gohan, Kuririn, grab two each.”
“I’ll get the last one,” I said, going to get it. We carried the Dragon Balls far enough away from the ship to feel safe.
Dende called upon the Dragon the moment we landed and had the Dragon Balls positioned correctly. “What are the wishes?”
“They want their friends brought back to life,” I replied, staring up at the dragon Parunga in shock.
Dende relayed the wish in Namekian.
“I can’t do that. I can only bring one person to life at a time.”
“What?!” Goku said. “But that . . . that can’t be! We have four dead friends. We need all four of them brought back!”
I watched the dragon’s every move, entranced. It was beautiful, a sign of strength and hope for the future.
