I had believed it was a joke, until he put the printouts on the table detailing a procedure to give a man the ability to have children. I really wish he hadn't done it while I was having my morning coffee. Marty, of course, found my spewing coffee all over the table incredibly hilarious.
In the six months since Tami has been in our lives, Quatre's desire for a child has only grown. And I must say, my own resolve is weakening. I'm still not sure about the procedure, but I promised we'd look at all avenues. The biggest drawback is that he desperately wants a biological child; so, for him, adoption isn't an option.
I'm not opposed to it, but he laid out all his reasons as to why a child of our own would be best... and then nailed me with the puppy dog eyes. Which is how I found myself quite uncomfortably in the office of one Dr. Chavez.

“I can't believe you talked me into this.”
“We're just here for a consultation. We're not making any decisions for the operation today.”
Heero raked a hand through his hair as he flipped through a pamphlet. He looked up as the door opened and they stood, shaking the man's hand.
“Mr. Winner, Mr. Yuy, it's a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise,” Quatre said with a grin. Heero simply nodded.
He set two folders on his desk, one much thicker than the other and folded his arms over them. “I can't tell you how happy it is to meet committed partners willing to take such a step, but I must tell you, that this operation isn't for anyone. It puts a lot of strain on the body.”
He looked to Heero. “I'm sorry, Mr. Yuy, but there's no way you could go through with this. I appreciate that the medications you're taking now are keeping you healthy, but there's no way to know how the hormones might interfere with your present medications. That could be disastrous for you and the child. Also, even though you are in remission, there are repercussions left on the body after a bout with leukemia and chemo. I'm sorry, but I can't, in good conscience, recommend or perform this surgery on you.”
He nodded. “I'd feared as much.”
Quatre licked his lips. “I asked you to look at both our charts. Surely I could-”
He grimaced. “I'm sure by now you are aware of the fact that you did in fact have a biological mother.”
He nodded. “Yes, my sisters told me a few years back.”
“Did they tell you why she died giving birth?” (1)
He shrugged. “Just that her body couldn't take it.”
“Right, and you have the same thing in you that would cause a pregnancy to be equally as dangerous.”
He frowned. “I don't understand.”
“You are an empath, aren't you?”
“Yes.”
He leaned forward slightly. “There are many changes a body goes through during pregnancy. In nine out of ten empaths, it affects their gift, causing a variety of rifts and spikes that weigh too heavily on the heart. Very few actually make it to delivery; and of those, only five percent live through it.”
Quatre started. “But I don't have any health problems.”
“Because your empathy is perfectly in sync with your body. If we start throwing in extra hormones alone, even without the pregnancy, it would be dangerous for you.”
Quatre sat back in his chair and sighed. Heero reached over and gripped his hand. “There's still adoption.”
“I know.” He gave him a weak smile. “I guess I'm selfish. I wanted a child that's a little bit of both of us.”
“That is still a possibility,” Chavez said. “You could get a surrogate mother.”
“A surrogate?” Heero asked.
“Yes. Basically what would happen is that we get samples from both of you and take the egg of the woman who will be carrying it. We can manipulate the genes to a degree so that the child will most likely resemble you two as opposed to the woman. She would carry to term and then you would have your child. There are risks involved with this, as well, but it is a much safer option for the two of you.”
“Do you have any information on it?” Heero asked.
Chavez nodded and pulled out several pamphlets, handing them over. Heero looked to Quatre, brows drawing together as he saw the downcast look to his lover's face. “Quatre, things are what they are. We can't change them. Only accept what is and make the best decisions to attain what we want. All right? So neither of us can carry a child,” he shrugged, “that doesn't mean we can't have one.”
Quatre nodded sullenly. Heero stared at him silently for a long moment before dread began to rise. He pushed to his feet and extended his hand to the doctor.
“Thank you for your help, Dr. Chavez.”
Realizing there was some uncertainty in the couple, he quickly shook the offered hand and took his leave.
Heero cleared his throat. “Come on.”
Neither said a word as they rode the elevator down and got in the car. Heero started it and pulled out of the parking lot. He took a breath.
“It isn't all that different,” he pushed passed the lump in his throat. “It's actually easier... if you can do it.”
Quatre's head shot up and he frowned. “What are you talking about?”
“Sex with women,” he clarified quietly. “Then you could have your child... get married and all that.” He clenched the steering tightly. “I can't give you what you want. A woman-”
“Pull over.”
He did as told, but couldn't bring himself to look at Quatre. “You want a family, I get that. And you can have it-”
He was cut off by Quatre jerking his chin around to glare into his eyes. “Do you know why I want a biological child?”
His brows drew together. “Someone to carry on the Winner name?”
“Idiot.” He took a breath. “No, so there's a piece of you and me... of us that lives on when we're gone.”
Dark brows drew together. “Of us?”
Quatre shook his head. “I love you, Heero. We're what I want to continue. Not the Winner name. I don't want just any child. I want OUR child.”
Heero took his lover's hand. “Quatre, there are hundreds of children already in this world with no home. With no one to love them. Just because they don't have our DNA doesn't mean they wouldn't be ours.”
Quatre dropped his eyes to their hands. “I know, but I want to hold something that's a part of you in my hands.”
He laughed softly. “You do that on a regular basis.”
He snorted. “You know what I mean.”
Heero sobered. “I'm sorry.” He hooked a finger under Quatre's chin and lifted his face. “You're still afraid you're going to lose me, aren't you?”
“It's hard not to be afraid,” he admitted on a quiet whisper.
Heero understood the fear, he felt it himself. He was in remission, yes, and they had high hopes for the drugs he was taking, but there was always the chance the cancer would return or something else would pop up. But Heero tried to take each day at a time because every day was one more than he had thought he'd have.
“I'm all right now, Quatre.”
He closed his eyes. “I know.”
He ran his thumb across the blond's cheek. “Then let's just enjoy today and stop worrying about tomorrow. We will find a way to have a child. I promise. But make sure it's for the right reason, Quatre. Not just so you can have a part of me in case something happens.”
He opened his eyes and met Heero's. “That's not the only reason.”
Heero smiled. “I know. I've seen you with Tami.”

Wufei tossed the vegetables and meat in the skillet over the burner. He pulled out two plates, watching as Duo paced the kitchen while talking on the phone.
“A week, then?... Yeah, we can do that... All right, thank you.” He listened for a moment and flushed slightly. “No need for that. I'm not...” He sighed. “No... no, I understand... Yeah, thanks.” He hung up and groaned, sitting at the table.
“They want me to speak because I'm, quote, 'Not only a survivor but also a hero.' Ugh.”
Wufei laughed softly as he dished rice onto the plate and then the stir fry over it. He set the plates on the table and sat. “It won't be so bad, and I'll be there.”
“To laugh, I'm sure,” Duo grumbled.
Wufei pulled him close to kiss him softly. “This isn't anything to laugh about. I'm proud of you.”
“For what? All I did was not die.”
“Well, I'm certainly thankful for that.”
Duo smirked. “You're just thankful for the sex.”
He nodded. “There is that. Now, eat before it gets cold.”
Needing no further prompting, Duo dug into the stir fry with his usual gusto. Wufei ate at a more sedate pace. “So, we'll be there for a week?”
Duo nodded. “There are several banquets set up, not all to do with the orphanage.” He guzzled half of his tea. “A couple are, as he put it, to honor two of the world's heroes.” He grinned cheekily. “I told him you could speak at those.”
Wufei frowned. “Bastard.”
He chuckled softly. “Probably, but I still turned out all right.”
Wufei blinked several times as he worked out the statement, and then he snorted. “Idiot, you know what I meant.”
“Idiot? What a thing to call your lover.”
He quirked an eyebrow. “So bastard is okay but idiot isn't?”
He shrugged. “Bastard means born out of wedlock. There's no other definition for idiot outside of stupid to my knowledge.”
Wufei was detained from commenting as his cell rang. “Chang.”
“Wufei, it's Ronnie. Are you busy?”
“Eating dinner.”
“Oh, sorry. I won't keep you.”
“It's all right.” Duo raised an eyebrow in question. “It's Ronnie. What did you need?”
“Trowa and I wanted to go see a movie this Saturday. If you're not busy, would you and Duo mind watching Tami?”
Wufei looked to Duo, knowing the answer before he asked. They, with Heero and Quatre, had told the couple that they'd take turns watching their 'niece', and Heero and Quatre had watched her the last time Trowa and Ronnie needed a night out.
“Do you want to babysit this weekend?”
Duo grinned. “Yeah!”
He rolled his eyes. Duo had no aspirations for having a child of his own, but he took his role as uncle seriously. He loved Tami as if she were his own and spoiled her accordingly. “We'd love to. What time?”
“Movie starts at seven thirty, but we'd like to go out to eat first, if that's all right.”
“That's fine. Would you like us to be there around five thirty, then?”
“That'd be great. Thanks, Wufei.”
“Not a problem.”
He hung up and dropped his phone back to his pocket, frowning slightly as he caught the gleam in his lover's eyes. “What?”
“I'm just looking forward to seeing Ronnie and Tro's faces when they see the new toy I got Tami.”
Wufei chuckled. “Just make sure not to give it to her while we're still there.”
Duo laughed. “It's to annoy the parents, not the babysitters. Don't worry. I'm just gonna leave it in her toy box.”
“You're evil, you realize that, don't you?”
He chortled. “Of course I do, and as we'll never have children, they don't stand too much chance and getting me back for it.”

Ronnie set the phone to the side and glanced to the sofa, a soft smile coming to her face. Trowa had Tami cradled in his left arm while he fed her a bottle. She pulled her mouth away, no longer interested in the bottle in her mouth. Trowa shifted her to his shoulder to burp her and glanced to his wife.
“They free?”
She nodded. “Yeah, Wufei said that'd be fine.”
Tami belched loudly and Trowa was glad for the towel over his shoulder as she spit up a little. He pulled her to sit her on his lap and wiped at her mouth. She reached out and gripped his bangs and he closed an eye.
“How many times do I have to tell you that's not a toy?” he asked with a laugh.
He pulled his left hand up to tug the tiny fingers from his hair. Although he'd never regained any use of two of his fingers, he'd managed to learn to control his forefinger to a large enough degree that he was able to do more with it than he thought he would. But it seemed pulling hair from a baby's grasp wasn't one of them.
She had come out as a perfect blend of her parents, with Ronnie's nose and mouth, and Trowa's chin and eyes. Her hair was a slightly deeper red than Ronnie's, and much more curly. Dark emerald met dark emerald and Trowa sighed as she gave him a toothless grin.
Ronnie laughed and rescued his bangs from the little fingers before scooping the baby from her father's arms. “You're gonna spend Friday with Uncle Duo and Uncle Wufei. What do you think of that, Tami?”
She blew a raspberry and Trowa laughed. “I'd feel the same way.” He pushed from the sofa and dropped a kiss to his ladies' foreheads before taking the bottle to the kitchen, Ronnie following.
He took the nipple off the bottle and rinsed it out before dropping the parts into the dishwasher. He grabbed a pot, intending to put it in the dishwasher, as well. His hand didn't cooperate, however, and he grimaced as the pot fell to the floor. He cupped his left hand in his right, massaging the cramping palm.
“Are you all right?” Ronnie asked as she knelt to pick up the pot.
“Yeah, damn thing cramped up on me.”
She set the pot on the counter and watched as he worked the cramp out. She set Tami in the play pen and grabbed some asper cream from the drawer. She took his hand silently and made to pull the glove off. He stopped her.
“I can get it, just give me the cream.”
“Trowa, why won't you ever let me help?”
He looked to the side. “It's... ugly.”
Her brows drew together. “Oh, Trowa. Do you really think it would bother me?” She sat him at the table and knelt in front of him. “Let me help.”
He sighed and relented his hand to her. She pulled the glove off and he grimaced at the jagged scar that covered his hand front and back. The fingers were tense with the cramp as she poured the cream into his palm and gently worked it into the skin. He closed his eyes, grimacing slightly at the pressure to the injured palm. There were certain areas of it that he couldn't feel, but there was enough feeling around it that had he not had a high tolerance for pain, he would have been shaking from the ache.
When the muscles finally relaxed, Ronnie kissed his palm and slipped the glove back on. She looked up to him and smiled. “All better.”
He cupped her cheek in his right hand. “Thank you.”
She winked. “No problem. You can make it up to me later.”
He laughed softly and leaned forward to kiss her. Tami decided she didn't like being ignored and began crying.

1- I'm not sure of the exact cause of Quatre's mother's death, other than she died giving birth to him. So, this was a liberty taken on my part.
