Disclaimer: I do not own Gundam Wing nor any of its characters. I only own the original characters. And nobody's paying me to write this. |
A/N I hadn’t really planned on posting this here due to my reservations about being able to finish it. This fic was started four years ago and after going back and rereading it, I’m not sure where certain aspects were going… Doh! However, there was a request by a reader that I post it, so here it is. I may make some minor alterations from the original fic, we’ll see. So, this is for you, AngelStarlight. ^_^
Prologue
Quatre rested his elbows on the table and propped his chin on his laced fingers as he gazed across the table at his friend. In the year and a half since the Mariemeia incident they were all finally settling into the peace they'd fought so hard to attain.
Trowa had returned to the circus and Heero had gone with him. For lack of anything better to do, he'd claimed, but Quatre had his suspicions that there was more going on between the two than they were saying. Duo and Wufei had joined Preventers while Quatre had returned to L4 and taken over the duties that came with running Winner Enterprises. He made frequent trips to Earth and had found himself spending more and more time with the Chinese Preventer on those visits.
Quatre shook his head as he sipped his water. “I'd put money on it.”
Wufei raised an eyebrow. “I don't know. Yuy and Barton? It doesn't make sense to me.”
“They're alike at first glance, but when you really study them, you can see the differences. Heero didn't make a habit of showing emotions; Trowa practically didn't feel anything at all. It was Heero's influence that showed Trowa emotions could be an asset. They enjoy a lot of the same things and are low maintenance, but loyal when committed to something. I believe they are, or will be, together, and that it'll be a lasting relationship.” He smiled. “Besides, don't you think they'd be cute together?”
Wufei rolled his eyes but had a fond smile on his lips. “If you say so, Quatre.”
“I do.”
“Any dessert tonight?”
Quatre glanced to their server. “None for me, thank you. Wufei?”
He shook his head and pushed his plate away. “If I eat any more, I won't fit in my uniform.”
Quatre laughed as he pulled out his credit card and handed it to the girl. “You'd work it off soon enough.”
Wufei didn't bother to try paying for his own food. He hadn't won that argument yet in all the times they'd had dinner. He leaned over to pluck a cherry tomato from Quatre’s plate. “How long before you return to L4?”
Quatre tilted his head to the side as he studied his friend. His ponytail, now falling almost a foot from the nape of his neck, had fallen over his shoulder. Quatre found himself wishing he could see it down and find out if it was as soft as it looked.
“Quatre?”
He shook his head, feeling his face go red as he realized he'd been caught staring. He ducked his head, grateful for the distraction when the server returned with his card and receipt. He quickly penned in the tip and stood.
“Ready?”
Obsidian eyes narrowed slightly as he followed Quatre out of the restaurant, wondering at the look in the blond's eyes. He allowed a small smirk to come to his lips as he opened the passenger side door for Quatre. Perhaps it was time to find out exactly what the relationship was between them.
He started the car and glanced to his companion. “You never answered my question.”
“Hm?”
“How long are you staying?”
“Oh. A couple of weeks, maybe longer. I can pretty much do anything I need to from my laptop. If anything important comes up, I have a branch here I can go to.”
Wufei nodded. “If you have a branch here, why do you stay on L4? What holds you there?”
Quatre looked to Wufei. “I... I don't know. I never thought about it. It just seemed like the natural thing to do.”
He parked outside of Duo's apartment building and turned in his seat. He put one hand on the back of Quatre's seat and the other on the dashboard. “That doesn't necessarily make it the right thing to do.”
“Oh? Any suggestions?” His eyes dropped of their own accord to Wufei's lips as he licked his own.
Wufei smirked at the subconscious action. “Move to New York,” he said softly.
Quatre leaned toward Wufei. “Any particular reason?”
“There are certain things that are difficult to do while you're off-planet.”
“Such as?” he asked, a tad breathlessly.
Wufei pressed his lips to Quatre's. The blond turned in his seat and snaked his hand over Wufei's shoulder to slide his fingers through the silken raven ponytail. When a tongue ran across his lips, he readily opened his mouth. Quatre gave over control of the kiss, shocks of pleasure shooting through him as Wufei's tongue caressed his own. All too soon, Wufei pulled away.
“What do you say?”
Quatre frowned, somewhat dazed. “To what?”
Wufei chuckled. “Moving to New York.”
Quatre licked his lips. “That was some pretty nice incentive.”
“So you'll think about it?”
He smiled softly and gave Wufei another quick kiss. “Definitely.” He opened the door. “It was a very enjoyable evening, Wufei. Thank you.”
“The pleasure was all mine.” He watched Quatre disappear into the apartment building, a grin growing on his face as he drove to his home across town. He had wanted to do that for months, but hadn't been sure if the blond would be receptive.
He tapped his thumbs on the steering wheel. Yes, the future was definitely looking good. He glanced at the clock, considered the time difference, and pulled out his cell phone.
“Finished with your date already?” Sally asked in way of greeting. “I was hoping you'd call in the morning.”
He grunted. “I wasn't planning on bedding him right off the bat. We have a good friendship. I don't want to ruin it by moving too fast.”
“So, what did happen? Did you tell him how you felt?”
“I told him moving to New York would be beneficial to him.”
She chuckled. “Did he ask you to elaborate?”
“Yes.”
“And what did you say?”
He cleared his throat. “It wasn't exactly verbal.”
She laughed in delight. “I take it he responded well?”
“Mm... he said he's definitely considering moving.”
“Good for you, Wufei.”
He turned onto his street. “Remember our deal, that's the last time I'm sharing relationship information with you.”
“You're just no fun sometimes, Wufei.”
He snorted. “I don't think the details of my relationships are any of your business.” He pulled into his driveway and parked his car, checking his mail before moving into his house.
“All right, you win. But at least keep me up to date on when he moves.”
Wufei paused in the kitchen, the feeling he wasn't alone washing over him. He flipped the light switch and his phone clattered to the floor.
“Wufei?.... Wufei?!”

Quatre entered Duo's apartment with his borrowed key and found Duo sitting in the recliner in the living room, looking for all the world like a father waiting up for his daughter. A grin split his face as he took in Quatre's flushed face and swollen lips.
“I take it y'all had a good time.”
He sat on the sofa. “I think I'm moving here.”
Duo laughed and jumped up. “This calls for a celebration.”
The blond looked to his friend with apprehension. “What kind of celebration?”
Duo grinned. “Popcorn, sugar highs, and old movies while you give me all the sordid details.”
Quatre turned to rest his chin on the back of the sofa while he watched Duo bounce around the kitchen. “There aren't any sordid details.”
“Y'all kissed.”
He couldn't stop the smile that came to his lips. “Yeah, and he knew just what he was doing,” he whispered.
Duo snickered as he tossed a bag of popcorn in the microwave. “How'd it happen?”
Quatre chuckled. “He used it as incentive for me to move here.”
Duo howled with laughter. “He must've been confident.”
Quatre sighed. “He had every reason to be. The man can kiss.”
Duo divided the freshly popped corn into bowls and brought one, along with a coke, to Quatre before returning with his own. “I'm glad for you, Quatre, and him, too. Fei's way too uptight for his own good.”
“He's not uptight around me.”
Duo grinned. “That's 'cause he wants in your pants.”
He threw a kernel at him. “Don't be crude. If that's all he wanted he would have taken me to his house, not dropped me off here.”
Violet eyes widened. “I didn't mean that like it came out.”
Quatre chuckled. “I know.”
Duo rested his cheek on his palm. “Seriously, I'm glad for y'all, but I really didn't see this coming. I bet Tro and Heero will even flip.”
He raised an eyebrow. “I doubt-” Quatre froze, face paling and hand going to his chest. “Wufei.”
“Quat? What's wrong?”
Large blue eyes stared straight ahead. “Intense fear... nothing.” He gripped at his chest. “He's gone. I can't feel him.” He clutched Duo's arm. “Duo, Wufei's gone.”
Chestnut brows drew together as he reached for his phone. He called Wufei's cell and house phone and only reached voicemail. He was about to try the cell again when he received an incoming call from Sally.
“Duo, you need to go to Wufei's.”
He and Quatre were already running for the car. “What happened?”
“I don't know. We were talking about his date with Quatre and he just went silent and dropped his phone.”
“We're on our way.” They reached the house, Quatre on the verge of panic as they found the door unlocked. Mail was scatter on the kitchen floor, along with Wufei's phone. There was no other sign of a struggle. No evidence. No Wufei.
In the months that followed, Quatre moved to Earth and the four remaining former Gundam pilots continued the search well after other authorities gave up.
Seven months later, Quatre awoke as anger, fear, and indignation burst into his chest with the distinct feel of a man he could never forget. It didn't help them find him, but it gave proof that he was still alive somewhere. Quatre gazed out his window into the night sky, hand held over his heart.
“Come back to me, Wufei. I'm still here.”
