Duo leaned into Wufei’s office, grinning slightly at the pose the Chinese Preventer was propped in. While he was used to seeing it, other agents would have probably choked on their own tongues. He cleared his throat and Wufei jumped with both feet falling to the floor.
He glanced at Duo, a hand flat to his chest. “You startled me.”
He chuckled as he moved into the room. “You let anyone else catch you like that and they’ll be asking questions. It isn’t like you to slip at work.” He tilted his head at the faint blush rising to Wufei’s face. “Something wrong?”
He sighed. “Just hating my job; nothing new.”
Duo nodded, leaning his hip to his friend’s desk. The misery on Wufei’s face was clear; had been for years. “Why don’t you just quit and find something you want to do? It’s time you stopped playing a role.”
“I know, it’s just that I’ll miss being with all of you,” he said softly. “I’ll miss the lunches.” He shook his head. “I know it sounds ridiculous.”
“No, I can understand, but what about Quatre? He doesn’t work here. Do you feel like you don’t get to see him enough?”
“But he comes to lunch every day.”
Duo shrugged. “So could you.”
He grunted. “Not really.”
Duo sighed softly. “I just hate seeing you hurting, Fei.”
He shook his head and gave Duo a small smile. “It’s not all bad. My life is great. It’s just my job that sucks.”
“At least we’re almost done for the day.” He chuckled. “How about we go to the club tomorrow? We haven’t gone in a couple of weeks.” He grinned. “I’m sure your fans are missing you.”
Obsidian eyes rolled before turning to the time on his computer. “Yeah.” He sighed. “And I’m not almost done. I’ve got an assignment tonight,” he said with a huff.
“That sucks.”
“It won’t be too bad. I just hate these things.”
Duo nodded. “So, have you thought about what you want to do when you leave Preventers?”
He looked up to Duo. “I want to open a book store café. Where people can buy, sell, trade, and sit in booths sipping cappuccino to read or talk with friends.” He shook his head. “Stupid, I know.”
“Not at all. It sounds awesome to me, and now I get why you got that business degree.”
Duo was stalled from saying anything else when Wufei’s cell rang.
“Chang?”
“’Sup?”
“Working. You?”
“You’re still at the office? But it’s Thursday.”
He sighed softly. “I’m on guard duty tonight. Sorry, but I can’t go tonight.”
She was silent for a moment. “That sucks.”
He snorted. “Tell me about it, but it is what it is. I’ll go next week.”
“Fine.” She huffed. “Who are you guarding?”
“Relena.”
“Tell her that she has to come next week to make it up to me.”
“I will.” He hung up and sighed softly before looking to Duo. “I have to get ready for this ball.”
The braided man grinned. “Better you than me.”
He glared at his friend. “Get out before I castrate you.”
His hands instantly went to his crotch. “Hey, that’s a bit much! Do you want Trowa to kill you? He kinda likes me the way I am!”
Wufei couldn’t stop the small smile that quirked his lips as he shoved his friend from his office. “Just go.”
Wufei grabbed the tuxedo he had hanging on the back of the door and moved down to the parking garage, slipping into his car to make the quick drive to Relena’s. He ducked inside when the butler opened the door and went straight up to Relena’s room.
“Fei!”
He shut the door behind himself, took and released a slow breath, and smiled. He hung up the tuxedo on the hook on her closet door. “You shouldn’t be surprised since you requested me.” He chuckled. “You’re looking well.”
She grunted. “I look a mess and you know it. How was work?”
He shrugged. “Work. How long do we have?” he asked as he looked over her frazzled hair.
She grimaced. “Two hours.”
“Plenty of time.” He sat her in a chair, facing away from the mirror. “What do we want? Board or friendly ready?”
Her eyes narrowed slightly in thought. “Something out of my face. I don’t want hair all over the place when we dance.”
He groaned softly. “Are you really going to make me dance? I hate ballroom dancing.”
“But you’re so good at it.” She grinned. “Or you could dance however you want to.”
Wufei rolled his eyes. “Yes, and half of the dignitaries and politicians would fall out from heart attacks. I don’t think proper society is ready for my brand of dancing.”
She laughed. “You’re probably right.”
He tilted his head as he gazed at her. “French twist, I think.”
“Sounds good.”
Four hours later Wufei ducked into his apartment and toed off his shoes with a grimace before loosening his tie.
“Wow.”
He looked to Heero who was watching him with amusement. He snorted and threw the tie and jacket over the back of the sofa. “Can it.”
“What? I wasn’t going to say anything.”
Wufei raised an eyebrow. “Really.”
“Well, just that the tuxedo really doesn’t suit you.”
“No need to tell me twice. This is the last time. Someone else is going to have to be her bodyguard at these things from now on.” He sat and rubbed his toes. “Those shoes are evil.”
Heero laughed and sat next to his lover and pulled his feet to his lap, rubbing them. “Compared to other shoes I’ve seen you wear, I can’t believe you’d complain about those.”
Wufei leaned over to kiss Heero. “Tomorrow we’re going to do some real dancing.”
-----
“Hey, Fei, get your butt in gear, we’ve got a club to raid.”
He grinned and shut his computer down. “Thank the gods.” He grimaced when his phone rang and punched the button.
“Chang,” Commander Une began, “I trust you had a fun time at the ball last night.”
He snorted. “You know better. I’d never go to something like that unless I had to.”
“I know. You’re a model agent who takes any mission and hasn’t taken any time off in years. You look burned out. You’re on a two week vacation starting today. Yuy is as well.”
Wufei’s jaw dropped. “Come again?”
She smiled, but it seemed somewhat sad. “You’re miserable, Chang, even I can see that. Take these two weeks to reevaluate what you really want out of life.”
He gaped as the connection was cut and looked to Duo. “Did that just happen?”
Duo shook his head. “You know it’s bad when even Une can see it.” He pushed from the desk. “Whose turn is it to invite Quatre?”
Wufei grunted. “Yours. Not that it’ll do any good. He hasn’t once come with us in over a year.”
Duo frowned at the bitterness in Wufei’s voice. “It isn’t that he doesn’t want to go.”
Wufei gathered up his things and they exited his office. “I can’t think of any other reason.”
Duo watched Wufei move down the hall before going to his own office. He punched in Quatre’s number and smiled when their blond friend appeared before him on the vidphone.
“You’re going to the club with us tonight.”
Quatre started. “You don’t know how much I want to go. Unfortunately I have an ass as a bodyguard. That’s the only reason I haven’t gone.”
Duo chuckled. “I thought so.” His mirth settled. “You better convince him to go tonight. Fei needs all of us.”
Quatre’s brows drew together. “Did something happen?”
“Not exactly, but I’m pretty sure a job change will happen in the near future.”
Quatre smiled. “Then I’m there whether my bodyguard agrees or not.”
A moment later Zechs’ face appeared on the screen. “If it’s that dire, we’ll go.”
Duo frowned. “Fine. Quat, explain shit to him. If he accepts, he’s welcome. If not, I’m kidnapping you.”
The blond nodded. “I’m with you.”
-----
Heero leaned his shoulder to the bathroom doorframe, watching his lover as he coated long lashes in mascara. Rich chocolate shadow shimmered on his lids. Wufei dropped the mascara in his makeup bag, eyes cutting to Heero’s reflection before he smiled and turned.
“Well?”
He let his eyes wander over his Chinese lover. Strappy heels lifted his height by three inches. Golden legs were bare until several inches above the knees where a black skirt flowed about his thighs. A form fitting shirt covered his torso with quarter-length sleeves, the shoulders left bare by a gap between the sleeves and thick straps.
“Beautiful.”
Wufei crossed to him, laying a quick kiss upon his lips. “What time are we leaving?”
“About that,” he led Wufei to sit on the edge of the bed and squatted in front of him, “Quatre is picking us up in the limo.”
Wufei smiled brightly. “He’s coming?”
“Yes, and so is Zechs.”
The smile fell. “Oh.”
Heero cupped his lover’s face. “Fei, if Quatre has his way sooner or later Zechs will be a part of our family. You know what he said after Quatre told him?”
“What?”
“That he’s glad you’re happy.”
A raven brow lifted and there was suspicion heavy in obsidian eyes. “Zechs said that?”
“Yes he did.”
Wufei wet his lips. “And you believe him?”
Heero ran his fingers through silky black hair that fell to the middle of Wufei’s back. “I believe that if you’re okay with it he can come. If not, we’re abducting Quatre and having a fun night out.”
Wufei chuckled. “All right, he can come.”
-----
Wufei was feeling somewhat close to sick as they neared the limousine. Zechs was a man he respected, not so much as his friends, but enough to feel humiliated if he was rejected. The driver opened the door and as he climbed in he was stalled by a very appreciative, “damn!”
He started, wide eyes flying to the long haired blond who had covered his mouth. A deep flush covered Zechs’ face as he back pedaled.
“Forgive me.”
He nodded slowly as he took his seat and crossed his legs while Heero sat beside him. Pale blue eyes seemed riveted to Wufei and he couldn’t stop the chuckle that turned into outright laughter as he leaned heavily into Heero.
After the laughter settled, Wufei looked to the long haired blond. “Sorry, that wasn’t the reaction I was expecting.”
Zechs chuckled. “I understand. I must say, this,” he gestured to Wufei’s outfit, “suits you much better than a Preventer’s uniform.”
He smiled. “Thank you.”
The older blond nodded. “May I ask a question?” Wufei nodded and he continued. “How long have the people in this group known?”
Duo laughed. “Heero found out three years ago. We were told about six month later.”
Wufei nodded and looked to Zechs. “I hope you can understand why this must go no further.”
He nodded. “I totally understand.”
Wufei smiled as the limo pulled into the parking lot of the club. He climbed out of the vehicle after Heero, moving straight to the front of the line as he glanced back to the blonds. “They won’t let us wait.”
“Looking lovely as always, Fei.”
He smiled. “Thank you, John.” He tilted his head toward Quatre and Zechs. “They’re with me.”
John looked to them and his eyes widened. “You’re friends with Quatre Winner?”
He smirked and winked. “I get around.”
John laughed as they moved into the club. It was still early so the crowd wasn’t too thick as they made their way to the bar.
“Well, if it isn’t Seville’s most lovely lady,” the DJ called over the speakers. “Where ya been Fei?”
He laughed as he looked to the DJ booth. “Some of us have to work for a living!”
There was a round of laughter front the regulars in the room and Zechs shook his head. “You’re something of a celebrity here, huh?”
Wufei shrugged as he sat on a stool at the bar, crossing his legs. “Hey, Jerri, can I get a Peach Iced Tea?”
The bartender grinned. “Anything for you, honey.” She quickly made their drinks as they ordered and they found a booth in the corner to sit all six of them.
“How often do you come here?”
Wufei looked to Zechs. “Usually every weekend. I missed last week because I was out on assignment.”
“May I ask another question?”
Wufei nodded. “Sure.”
“How long have you felt this way?”
He grimaced slightly and Heero rubbed his back, looking at Zechs. “It’s still a bit of a painful topic for her.”
“Forgive me. You don’t have to answer.”
Wufei cleared his throat. “No, it’s all right. When I was young I would raid my mother’s wardrobe and play with her makeup.”
Quatre’s eyes widened. “I thought it started six years ago.”
He shook his head. “Mother caught me once, said I was the cutest thing she’d ever seen. She taught me how to put on makeup and walk in heels.” His wistful smile crumbled. “Then one day my father came home early from a business trip. He was furious. I was severely punished, as was my mother. Next thing I knew he’d found me a fiancée and married me off at fourteen.” He finished there as the others knew the rest.
“Damn, Fei, that’s awful.”
He nodded, sipping his drink. “But that was years ago and everything’s worked out now.” He looked to Heero with a smile.
The Japanese man leaned in to kiss him softly. “Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
A song came over the speakers and Wufei grinned, pulling Heero to the dance floor.
Zechs watched them, feeling as if his world had been turned upside down. This was not the Chang Wufei he knew. Everything from the way he spoke to the way he moved screamed woman. At the same time, he’d never looked more right.
“I’ve never seen him so happy.”
“Her,” Trowa corrected absently.
Zechs nodded. “That’ll take some getting used to.”
