The sun beamed down and warmed the white haired Saiyan. She had been up for hours but she had been inside until now. She stared out at the landscape from where she stood on her balcony. She turned and was about to head inside when someone called out to her.
“Lyri!”
She turned and looked down at the tall man calling out to her.
“Hey, Kakarot!” she yelled back.
“The princess has been looking for you all morning!” he told her.
Lyri looked confused. “Why hasn’t she called me over the scouter?”
Kakarot shrugged. “She said she has been trying all morning!”
Lyri took off her scouter and saw that the communication system on it had been turned off. She noticed Kakarot had jumped up and landed on the railing of the balcony.
“Did you forget to turn the comm system on again?” he asked.
“No!” she snapped as she quickly turned it on only for the princess’s voice to come on, yelling at her.
“Lyri! So help the gods, I swear if you don’t answer this, I’ll send my brother to deal with you!”
Lyri rolled her eyes. “She’s mad. You’re in trouble!” Kakarot told her.
“Let her send the prince,” Lyri said, “I could use a good fight.”
“What you’ll get is a trip to the regen tank...” Kakarot told her.
Lyri shoved him off the railing and walked into her room.
“That wasn’t nice!” he yelled at her through the comm on her scouter.
“Since when are Saiyans nice?” she asked him, “Meet you later for some sparring?”
“Hells yeah!” Kakarot said.
Lyri pulled on her armor and headed to the throne room, where the princess’s and prince’s ki signatures were. She opened the door and walked in.
“Finally!” a short girl with unruly shoulder length onyx hair yelled.
“Sorry, my princess,” Lyri said, lowering her head respectfully.
“Whatever,” the girl said, rolling her eyes, “It’s my fault, really. You’re always forgetting to turn your comm system on.”
“Again,” Lyri said, “I am sorry.”
“Isn’t a protector supposed to have their comm system on at all times?” the prince asked.
“Yeah, well, I got stuck with the stupid, forgetful one...” the princess muttered
“Hmmn,” the prince glared at his sister.
“Anyway,” the princess said turning back to Lyri, “We leave tomorrow. Make sure you are prepared.”
Lyri nodded. “Yes, Princess Kiki.” She turned to the prince and bowed her head again. “Prince Vegeta.” She turned and headed back to her room.
“Kakarot, our sparring will have to wait,” she said through the comm, “Princess Kiki and I are being sent on a mission tomorrow.”
“Damn,” he said sounding disappointed, “I was looking forward to it.”
“As was I,” Lyri told him.
She grabbed a bag and started tossing things in it when she felt Kakarot on the balcony again. “You need to stop that,” she called, “People will think that I am to be your mate.”
Kakarot walked into her room. “Nah. People know that I would not take you. You’re too mean.”
Lyri glared at him. “If you say so,” she said.
“So, where are you going this time?” he asked.
She shrugged. “I wasn’t given that information nor did I ask.”
“That sucks,” Kakarot said. He fell silent and pressed his scouter to his ear. “Yes, sir. I’ll be ready,” he said to someone on his comm system. He grinned at Lyri. “Guess what!”
“Hmm?” she asked not really paying attention anymore.
“Prince Vegeta and I are being sent with you and Princess Kiki!” he said.
Lyri ties the strings to her bag and looked at him. “What now?” she asked.
“Prince Vegeta and I are going with you,” Kakarot repeated himself.
“Why?” she asked.
Kakarot shrugged. “I just do as I’m told.”
Lyri growled and sat on the edge of her bed. “I’d rather he not come.”
“The prince?” Kakarot asked. Lyri nodded. “Why?”
“He hates me. Why? I do not know,” she told him.
“He does not hate you,” Kakarot said, “He’s...indifferent...”
Lyri shrugged.
“You like him!” Kakarot exclaimed.
“No, I don’t!” Lyri snapped, her face turning three shades darker.
“You do!” Kakarot said.
“Even if I did, which I don’t, it wouldn’t matter. He doesn’t have an interest in mating. And he wouldn’t choose me...” she told him.
“Why do you think that?” he asked.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Lyri said.
“Lyri...” Kakarot said.
She shook her head. “You should go and pack.”
Kakarot frowned but nodded. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” He left, jumping from the balcony again.
Lyri groaned and got up. She grabbed her bag and made her way to the docking station. She opened Kiki’s ship and walked in. She tossed her bag in her room before sitting in one of the seats in the cockpit. She closed her eyes and folded her arms over her chest. She always felt better in the ship before they were sent away. And the conversation with Kakarot had made her feel worse than usual. It was true, she had feelings for Vegeta, but like she said, he had made it a point to let everyone know that he had no interest in mating. And even if he did, he wouldn’t choose her. She was a freak. Almost everyone thought so. She looked nothing like a normal Saiyan with her white hair and brilliant purple eyes. She was strong, yes, but her looks always came into play. She was surprised that she was even considered, let alone chosen, as Princess Kiki’s protector.
“Why are you here?”
She turned and saw Vegeta standing behind her.
“I always stay in the ship the night before shipping out,” Lyri told him.
Vegeta stared at her.
“It just makes me feel better,” she told him.
“You’re an odd one, aren’t you?” he asked.
“That’s one of the things they say about me,” she said, annoyed. She turned back around.
He took the seat next to her and stared out the window. They sat in silence, neither one saying anything. But that was always the case when she was sent away with him. He never spoke to her unless he absolutely needed to. Lyri pulled her hip length hair over her left shoulder and began braiding it.
“Where do you get your coloring from? Your mother or your father?” he asked.
“Neither,” she told him, “Both had traditional Saiyan coloring. Not that I remember mother. She passed when I was young.”
Vegeta was silent for a bit. “And your father?” he asked.
“Passed a couple years after mother,” Lyri answered, “Killed on a mission. Bardock and Gine, Kakarot’s parents, took me in for a few years...”
Vegeta said nothing again. Lyri finished her braid and left her hair hanging over her shoulder. “You never asked about my past before...” she said.
He shrugged. “Don’t make it a big deal,” he told her.
“I’m not,” she said. Silence enveloped then again. “Your coming of age is coming up...”
He growled and folded his arms over his chest. “Don’t remind me...”
“Not looking forward to it?” she asked.
“Not particularly...” he said.
“Why?” She turned to look at him.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” he told her.
She nodded and dropped the subject. After a few minutes of them sitting there, not saying a word, she got up. She took her armor off and set down behind the chair she had been sitting in and left. She reappeared a while later with two plates of food. She handed one to Vegeta and placed the other one in her chair the disappeared again only to reappear with two beers. She handed one to Vegeta then picked up her plate and sat down.
“So,” she said, twisting the top off her beer, “Why are you here?”
He opened his and took a sip. “Do I need a reason to be here?”
She shook her head. “I only asked because you asked me.” She took a sip of her drink.
They finished the meal in silence. Lyri took the plates. “I’m going to wash these and then go train,” she said more to herself than to him. She washed the dishes, leaving them in the drying rack on the counter and then made her way to the small training room. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Vegeta in there, leaning against the wall, his arms crossed and his armor off.
“Uh...”
He looked at her. “You said you could use a good fight.”
She rubbed the back of her head. “You heard that, did you?” she asked.
He smirked at her. “You think you can hold your own against me?” he asked, walking towards her.
She took a step back only to realize that there was no where to go. “I never said that. Only that I wanted a good fight.”
He stopped when her back was against the wall behind her. He looked her over, sizing her up. “You wouldn’t last two minutes...”
She glared up at him. “I’m stronger than I was back then. I could last longer than two minutes.”
He stared down at her. “Are you challenging me?”
“If I am?” she asked.
“You’d be very stupid...” he told her.
“Could you two not do...that, in the walkway?”
Lyri and Vegeta turned to see Kakarot and Kiki watching them.
“What in the hell are you two doing here?” Vegeta asked, moving away from Lyri.
“Watching you two awkwardly flirt with each other,” Kiki told him. Vegeta rolled his eyes.
“There was no flirting,” he said.
“Uh-huh...” Kiki said, “You could do worse, brother. But, you could also do better. Preferably someone who looks like a Saiyan.”
Hurt briefly flashed in Lyri’s eyes. “What do looks have to do with anything? Strength is more important than looks,” Vegeta told his sister, “And I do not wish to take a mate.”
“You will have to take a mate to take the throne,” Kiki told him, “You know that father wants you to choose someone to be your intended by your coming of age celebration.” Vegeta growled and walked off. Kiki made a face at his retreating back. “Is the ship in order?” she asked Lyri.
“Yes,” Lyri told her.
“We’ll leave now, since everyone is here,” Kiki said. She handed Lyri the coordinates to the planet they were headed to and walked off. Kakarot started to complain, but stopped after Kiki turned to glare at him.
Lyri walked to the cockpit with Kakarot following her. She sat in the chair that she had been in earlier and Kakarot took the other seat. She began pressing buttons and glanced at Kakarot. “All set?” He nodded and Lyri took off. She easily navigated them through the atmosphere and into space. She entered the coordinates and set the ship to autopilot.
“Why didn’t you say anything to the princess when she insulted you?” Kakarot asked after everything was done.
“What was I to say? Hey, stop being a bitch. Just because I look different doesn’t mean that I don’t have feelings? Why do my looks matter when I’m strong enough to be your protector? That would have gone over real well,” Lyri said. She sighed. “It’s nothing I haven’t heard before, Kakarot. And I’ll hear about my looks until I die...I’ve accepted it.”
“It doesn’t make it right...” he said.
Lyri shrugged. “Were it anyone else, I would have smacked them. Or ripped off their arm and beat them with it,” she told him, “But doing that to the princess is kinda frowned upon.”
Kakarot shook his head. “For what it’s worth,” he told her, “I like the way you look.”
“Thanks...” Lyri said.
Vegeta walked up behind them. “How long until we arrive?”
Lyri turned and pulled up the map. “Five days...maybe four if we’re lucky.”
Vegeta stared at the screen. “You entered the coordinates correctly?”
Lyri pulled out the paper Kiki had given her and double checked. “Yeah,” she said.
“We’ve already taken this planet...” Vegeta said.
“The few that were left alive have started to rebel,” Kiki said walking into the room, “We’re to stop it and, if necessary, kill them.”
“Fun...” Lyri said, “Let me guess...I’m to convince them that rebellion with equal death?”
“Of course,” Kiki told her.
Lyri turned and brought up the planet’s information on the computer. “You’re sure this will work?”
“Why wouldn’t it work?” The princess asked.
“Because it says here that the last two attempts to communicate civilly failed,” Lyri said.
“Last ditch effort,” Vegeta muttered.
“Yeah,” Kiki said.
Lyri nodded. “Makes sense.”
The next two days went by as expected with four Saiyans cooped up together. By the third day, Lyri was over it. She was normally ok with these situations but this time? She was just ready for this to be done. She walked out of her room the third night and towards the training room. She started doing some warm ups and had just started on an actual workout when she was interrupted.
“Do you have any idea what time it is?”
She looked at Vegeta. “Sorry. Couldn’t sleep...”
He growled. “Come with me.”
She followed him into his room. “Here...” he said handing her something.
“What is it?” Lyri asked looking at the small pill in her hand.
“A sleep aide,” Vegeta told her, walking to the bathroom get her some water. He returned to find her asleep on his bed. He stared at her sleeping form. He had never seen the sleep aide work that fast before. He picked her up, first to take her to her room, but instead threw back his blankets and set her down on one side of his bed. He took his shirt off, turned off the lights and climbed in on the other side of the bed. He awoke the next morning to something curled up next to him. He opened his eyes and saw Lyri laying next to him, facing him. Her tail was draped over his hip and her head was resting on his elbow. He didn’t remember rolling over, he had fallen asleep with his back to her. He found that his arm was around her, as was his tail. He laid still, unsure of what to do. He had never slept with anyone before. He had never been in this situation.
Lyri shifted slightly in her sleep. A strand of hair fell across her face. Vegeta carefully moved it back. Her hair was soft and silky. He stared at her some more. Like all Saiyan women, she didn’t look like she had much strength to her, but he knew the opposite was true. He had seen her fight before. Had seen her take down men twice her size. She was everything a Saiyan would want...strong, independent, feisty...and yet...he touched her white hair again.
Her eyes fluttered open and her violet eyes looked at him. She blinked once...twice...and was on the other side of the room in a flash.
“I’m sorry!” she said before disappearing through the door. She hurried to her room and closed the door, locking it behind her. Her face was hot and her heart was beating faster than it ever had. She put her face in her hands and shook her head. “Idiot!” she muttered to herself. She walked to the bathroom and turned the shower on as hot as it would go. She stood under the scalding hot water and thought to herself. She kept calling herself an idiot. How? How could she have fallen asleep that fast? One minute she was awake and asking what the pill was and the next, she was waking up in his bed as close to him as she could get! She started hitting her head against the wall. “Stupid, stupid, stupid...” She finally turned the shower off after what seemed like forever. She dried herself off with her ki, braided her hair and dressed in a hunter green sleeveless training suit. She walked to the cockpit and found Kakarot sitting in one of the chairs.
“How much longer?” she asked.
He pulled up the map. “About ten hours or so,” he told her, “We’re making good time.”
“Yeah,” she said, “I’ll take over for now. Why don’t you go get something to eat and rest before we get there.”
Kakarot nodded. “Thanks. Want me to get you anything?”
Lyri shook her head. “I’m fine, but thanks.” She took the empty chair and watched the blackness of space out of the window. She crossed her arms over chest and sighed. ‘Idiot...’ she thought for the millionth time. God, she was stupid. She should have waited until she got back to her room to take the sleep aide, but she didn’t think it would work that fast! She had dry swallowed it right after Vegeta had given it to her. She didn’t even remember feeling drowsy or falling asleep. It was embarrassing! And then she woke up in such an intimate position! And he was touching her! ‘Why was he touching my hair?’ she thought to herself. She glanced at the white braid hanging over her shoulder. “Don’t read too much into it...” she told herself.
“Talking to yourself is a sign of insanity.”
“Hmmm,” Lyri said as Kiki leaned on the empty chair next to her, “Just what I need to further ostracize myself...for people to think I’m insane...”
“So, was I seeing things or did you rush out of Vegeta’s room earlier?” Kiki asked.
“Mind your own business, princess,” Lyri said, pulling up the map.
“You know that he can’t take you as a mate, right?” Kiki said.
“Two hours until we land,” Lyri said, ignoring Kiki, “I should get ready.” She stood and tried to walk past Kiki but the princess grabbed her arm.
“No one would take a freak like you seriously if he were to choose you,” she said.
Lyri ripped her arm from Kiki’s grasp. “Go fuck yourself.” She walked towards her room only to be stopped by Kakarot.
“Hey! Wow. You look pissed. What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing. Two hours until we land,” Lyri said, “I need to get ready...” She walked around him and she felt him following her. “What?”
“There’s something you’re not telling me,” he said, “What’s wrong?”
“Drop it, Kakarot,” Lyri told him, “It’s nothing.” He followed her into her room. “It’s nothing. Just...just drop it...ok?” She grabbed her armor and pulled it on.
“That’s what you say every time you’re upset,” he told her.
“Yeah, well, maybe you should listen then!” She walked past Kakarot. “Come on,” she said. They headed towards the cockpit and Kakarot landed the ship.
“We’re here,” Kakarot said, “Planet Algol...”
