“speaking”
King Robert Maxwell walked through the now foreign castle. The last time he graced these halls with his presences was more then seven years ago. Then there were people, servants, slaves, merchants, Dukes and Duchess all running through these halls, but he realized as soon as he stepped inside no one was here, save for the one he came for.
The once clean stone walls were grimy from the absents of the servants, and the once navy blue drapes were stained, faded and moth eaten. The floors covered in dirt and blood from soldiers fresh off the battlefield to report to their mad king.
Why did he do it? Why start this war, when he knew he could not win? But further more why did his people follow him into battle? Six years of fighting, and not once a word of reason fell from King Odin's lips. There was no logical reason behind the war that as of now known as the Six Year War, not when Odin knew he had a limited source of resources and battle trained men. Yet he still went to war with his once long time friend, and his people fought like possessed men. What was his hate for them?
Robert wanted these questions answered, for years theyhaunhaunted him in his dreams, but today he would have his answers. On this day he could lay his own demons to rest.
The dieing battle cries told the King of Aliasto that the war was almost over. The years of killing was coming to an end, but there had to be one more death for that to happen. Opening the door that would lead him to the throne room, he took a breath ready for anything. Sword drawn he took a step inside.
Whatever Robert expected was not this. As he walked through the castle his imagination played tricks on him, fantasying fifty-two soldiers ready to protect their King. Nowhere in through these visions was a child playing alone in the throne room.
The child had chocolate brown hair projected from his small head in short spikes that looked never to be combed. Intense cobalt blue eyes that lit up in fear and excitement at the new guest. Though like the shy child he was he took the red ball he was playing with and ran to hide behind the throne chair.
"You're not the one that always comes to see my father," the child yelled over at Robert.
/This boy is Odin's son, when did his wife have a child./ Robert thought. Odin's wife, Nadine, had been killed in the first year of fighting. That was the last word he heard from his spy, there was no word of a child she had.
"No, I am not, but I just want to talk to your Father." Robert said in a soft sincere voice, and for better insurance he lowered his sword. The boy of about five peered one eye around, "promise," He yelled.
"Promise," Robert answered. Suddenly the boy stepped from behind the tall, iron chair, his eyes blazing more then the darkest blue crystals Robert has seen. He motioned for Robert to follow him and Robert did as the kid told him; and when no objections were made on eithere the they walked on.
The child took them through a hidden door behind the throne chair. Robert walked closer to the boy in the dark corridor, and he had the feeling that this was a trap. Hand hovering over the hilt of his sword, ready for any kinda of trap, but nothing, only darkness. There was just the noise of his boots upon the stone.
After minutes of walking the child lead him to a room with one small bed. The King of Telfair lay asleep upon it, but the once young and fruitful king Robert knew was gone. On the bed lay a skeleton of flesh and bones, his eyes swollen red with lack of sleep and tears.
"He's always sleeping in the day," the child said remorsefully.
"Why?" Robert asked as he stepped close to the fallen King.
"Shadows can't get us in the light."
******************
The trip home had taken him and his train of carriages three weeks and not once did King Odin open his eyes. Over the lands Robert's people cheered and celebrated for him, because the war was over. He had captured the evil King from the west, and was about to give justice to those lives lost because of what Odin did.
Robert wished he could join in his people in celebration but he could not bring himself to do so. Even the sight of his beautiful city and home couldn't lift his sprits. Running his hands through his sand colored hair, he looked over at the sleeping boy. Three weeks with the boy and he still couldn't get the boy to talk to him.
After his soldiers rushed in and chained his father he quit speaking, but that would be normal since Robert broke his promise. Still not to speak for three weeks was not normal for a child of his age, Robert should know, he's own child at that never stayed quiet. Well he was still like that, but with this boy there was something odd about him. Perhaps confined to one room and sleeping odd hours affected him. Or perhaps, playing alone with no one else to talk to but a father who had gone mad. Then again perhaps the number of people around him frightened him, or maybe he was just shy.
Robert quit thinking as his own carriage was taken to the courtyard. The boy started to stir as Robert stepped out of the dark red carriage, even went as far as stepping behind the king to stay out of view.
"Love, I'm so happy you made it back!" His wife cried as she wrapped her thin arms around his neck. Her shoulder length chestnut hair falling around her, and she was dressed in one of her white sundresses. As she let go of him, he looked up the entrance stairshis his only child, heir to the throne standing there with a manic grin across his face.
"Duo," Robert said pulling his wife to his side, "come here I want to show you something." As expected Duo ran down the steps, eager as any ten year old would be to see this mystery. Violet eyes lit up and his own shoulder length hair glistened in the mid day sun.
"Did you bring me something, Father?" Duo asked eyes darting around the courtyard, looking for what his father wanted to show him.
Robert stepped aside for Duo to see the child standing behind him. His cobalt blue eye glistening in untold fear, but that quickly was covered with a stoic glaze.
"Who is he?" Duo asked with curiosity .
"He's Odin's son, his name, though, he hasn't told me." Robert said, as his wife Helen bent down her blue eyes set on the task before her.
"What's your name?" She asked in a motherly voice. The boy only stood slightly staring back at her. When she moved her hand to touch him he reacted by running behind the older boy. Clenching to his black tunic for some kind of support.
"Duo why don't you take him to your gardens, and Helen see to it that a room is set up for him. I still have business to finish off." Robert said and the three set off on their set tasks. The child was still holding onto his son's tunic staying away from his wife.
Robert's businesses lead him to the dungeons. A place he rarvisivisited for the smell roaming through there was not from the uncleanness of the walls, but of those behind them. The smell of fear, anger, lost hope and no remorse saturated these men in dirt and grime.
"Can I help you, your highness?" The prison guard asked.
"Take me to King Odin." Robert said. He should be here already since he was in the front carriages and not the back ones. With that thought he walked behind the prison guard, he didn't want to do this but it had to be done. As they turned and walked further down the aisle the sounds from the men in their cells increased, each man whispering or screaming their own prays.
At the end of this aisle the prison guard took the key ring off his belt. He opened the poorly lit room, but inside the dark cold gloom lay a man Robert should have never known. A man thought to be his friend, but wasn't recognizable as that man.
"King Odin?" Robert said. Has he wakened up?
"Robert is that you, it's been so long," Odin said in a hoarse voice. /What happened to you old friend?/ Robert thought as he looked down at the bones of a man he once knew.
"Odin, why did you start the war?" Robert asked the question that's plagued his mind for six years.
"War?" Odin looked around for the first time eyes wide in shock. "Oh my gods, what have I done?" Odin whispered aloud like he just woke up. Odin stood up and walked the length of his chains before stopping. Rattling the chains, trying with all his might to get out of them.
"What did you do, Odin, why did you start a war with me?" Odin didn't hear his words for he was mumbling like a mad man. Did war do this to him? No, Odin and Robert fought in a war before this, when they were friends, what happened.
"The boy, my boy. Where is he? They can't touch him now? Won't touch him in fear of what he might do?" Odin muttered to himself before looking up at Robert. "Please, forgive an old man, Robert. I did something terrible."
"Odin, I forgive you, but as the law declared I still must have you killed." Robert said, but the law declaring his death didn't faze Odin.
"I care not what you do to me, far worse has been done," a shiver ran through his body as he spoke. "My boy, Robert. Please take care of him, he did nothing wrong, please care for him like he's your own." Odin was pleading with him. Something Robert had never seen before.
"I never planed harming him."
"Then you'll take him in."
"Yes."
"Then lets get the rest over with." Odin said and for the first time in six years he saw his childhood friend he'd always remember even when he was dead.
