Chapter Nine - A Surprising Ally
The surface of the planet erupted in a sudden chaos as the 3 Saiyajins and their tag-along student chased the population into a panicked frenzy. Chi suddenly found herself face to face with a woman leading two frightened children by the hands. Chi charged up a blast to kill them but then realised what she was doing and powered down and turned away. "I can’t do this" she whispered to herself, bowing her head. "I’m not a murderer…" A sudden detonation from behind her made Chi whip around to see the mother and her children sprawled on the ground - dead, with Nappa standing over them and sneering down at her. The fury written on his face made Chi feel very ashamed and when he pointed silently at her pod she went without argument.

"I don’t believe it! Her first mission away and she turns soft-hearted! I’m telling you Vegeta that gaki had better stay away from me or…"
"Hush up Nappa!" Vegeta ordered sharply. "Don’t you remember your first planet purge? You were quite reluctant to kill if I recall what my father told me."
"But at least I did kill. She didn’t even get a drop of blood on herself! She’s nothing but a useless, worthless, pathetic excuse for a warrior!"
Chi who was sitting unnoticed nearby, cringed at every word. They didn’t appear to realise that her hearing was much sharper than that of an average human and that she could hear every single word of their heated conversation.
Her ears twitched slightly as she heard footsteps further down the hall. It was more than likely Frieza coming to receive Vegeta’s report on how the mission went. Chi brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms tightly around herself, dreading what Vegeta would say about her cowardice and dreading even more the punishment. She pressed herself deeper into the shadows, buried her face in her arms and prayed not to be noticed as she heard the door slide open and people enter.
"And how went the mission Vegeta?" She heard Frieza ask in a light, conversational tone "Excellently my Lord, the planet’s population didn't know what hit them and surrendered within a day."
"I’m pleased to hear that. Zarbon how long do you think it would’ve taken you and a squad from your troops?"
"Given that planet’s best warrior’s strength, I’d say about half a day mighty Frieza."
"That’s what I thought." Frieza said, looking at Vegeta with a condescending smirk.
Chi could practically feel the anger and humiliation oozing from every pore of Vegeta’s body and suddenly felt a rage of her own. How dare Frieza mock him and treat him that way? Vegeta always did his very best to serve Frieza but somehow Vegeta’s best just wasn’t good enough, in fact, Frieza seemed to delight in taunting Vegeta and ridiculing him at every opportunity. Her anger got the better of her and she was about to jump up and tell Frieza a thing or two when he suddenly asked, "And what about the gaki? Did she live up to expectations?"
"She performed well above my expectations my Lord," Vegeta lied quickly and Chi caught her breath in a small gasp. "I fear that the excitement was a bit much for her however and she is currently resting in her quarters." He shot a quick, quelling glance in her direction, that told her to sit down and remain unnoticed. Still caught up in shock, Chi quickly complied.
"This is very good, very good indeed. Seeing as she did so well I think I will continue to let you teach her and assign her permanently to this squad. Quite frankly I’m sick of having her hanging around when neither I nor Zarbon can train her, and annoying the crew when her energy would be better spent serving this squad. She is getting quite powerful you know." Vegeta looked surprised but quickly bowed his head to hide it. Frieza took this as acquiescence and left the room.
As soon as the door had closed behind Frieza, Nappa exploded. "This is great, just great. Why the hell did you lie for her Vegeta? Now we’re stuck with the yellow-bellied little gaki forever! Argh! Honestly Vegeta why did you do that? I swear I’m not going to lose my hair through old age, by the time that happens I would’ve torn it all out in frustration!"
"That is all Nappa you are dismissed, you too Radditz. Where you go I do not care just get out of my sight and do not yell at me further, I know what I am doing." Radditz nodded "Yes my Prince. Come on Nappa, let’s go see what the cook has for us in the kitchen." Nappa’s spluttering was abruptly cut off as Radditz dragged him bodily out the door and down the hallway.
Vegeta exhaled heavily then walked into the shadows where Chi was hiding. He laid a heavy hand on her shoulder and she looked up at him her eyes filled with tears and her expression one of utter and total guilt. "I’m sorry" she whispered. "I let everybody down…and now they all hate me…I…I should’ve been braver…I should have killed those people, then Nappa wouldn’t be mad at me." Vegeta had been about to lecture her on her cowardice but quickly realised that doing so would make her feel even worse. The gaki was punishing herself far more harshly than anybody else ever could and for some unknown reason Vegeta felt that he shouldn’t add to that.
"It’s ok," he said quietly and Chi looked up at him, as surprised as he was by his words. "I know how hard it is to kill for the first time, especially if the people you have to kill haven’t done anything to you personally."
"I…I just didn’t see why they had to die. I didn’t want to do to them what I had done to me. It seemed wrong! And why did you lie for me? Nappa didn’t like that at all."
"I know it’s wrong, but it’s what Frieza wants from you and in the end he’s going to turn you into a killer whether it’s of your own free will or not. It is probably best in the long run if you surrender now and give in, it’ll spare you a lot of pain in the future. And I lied for you because I feel that you deserve another chance to prove yourself. You wouldn’t have been given that chance had I told Frieza the truth, because he probably would’ve killed you. And Nappa can go rot in hell as far as I’m concerned, he doesn’t get a say in my decisions, he just has to obey them." Chi nodded and looked thoroughly miserable.
Suddenly she threw her arms around Vegeta and sobbed into his chest. "I don’t want to be here! I want to be home with my mom and dad! I just want everything to go back to the way it was before!" Vegeta’s eyes bulged out of their sockets in surprise at the little girl who had her arms locked around him and was weeping despairingly into his chest. He awkwardly patted Chi’s shoulder and stroked her hair in an effort to calm her. "I think that none of us want to be here and that we all want things to go back to the way they were. But it won’t happen." Vegeta cupped Chi’s chin gently in his hand and tilted her face upward to meet his gaze. He reached out and gently wiped the tears from her eyes. "But we can’t spend our time dwelling on the past. We must instead look to the future and to our own survival. If that survival means that we must do things that we do not like then so be it. At least we would have survived and that’s what counts."
Chi nodded understandingly as what he said made a lot of sense. "Thank you…for not ratting me out to Frieza. I’ll do better next mission I promise." Vegeta smirked at her. "Don’t make promises you can’t keep gaki, but you had better do better next mission or else it’ll be Nappa finishing you off instead of Frieza. Now off with you, it’s been a long mission and I am rather wearied by it." Chi bowed formally to him, gave him a brief, shy smile, before turning and walking calmly out of the room.
Vegeta shook his head as she made her exit. What had come over him? Why was he being so…so nice to the girl? He, a prince of the Saiyajins being nice to a common peasant…it just wasn’t right! But he knew that she had awakened something deep within himself and that if it came to it he would give his life to protect her. "What has she done to me?" he asked himself quietly. But as soon as he voiced the question he knew the answer. "She has given me compassion…if only towards her. How the hell did she manage to do that when Frieza beat all the compassion out of me long ago?" Vegeta dwelt on that for a while then just decided that the easiest way to find out would be to ask the girl the next time he saw her.
