Chapter 10
Hilde felt Duo lean against her back and grip the front of her shirt as his arms encircled her waist, as she turned onto the highway. She opened her mouth to ask if he was alright but she knew her words would be lost in the wind. She closed her mouth and pushed the bike harder, hoping he wouldn’t pass out from his wounds.
She berated herself as she got the bike to cruising speed, angry because she hadn’t gotten there sooner. He gotten hurt because of her and she hated it. She shouldn’t have gotten into trouble with Une and this probably wouldn’t have happened. She hoped Sally was on Duty in the infirmary because she wouldn’t ask any questions. Hilde knew one of these days their luck would run out and Sally would start asking. She just hoped it wouldn’t be tonight. She felt Duo’s grip tighten slightly, and mentally thought, **Hang on, Duo, we’re almost there.**
She turned into the parking lot and pulled the bike to the back of the Preventer Building where the hospital wing was. She brought the bike to a halt in front of the doors and grasped Duo’s hands .
“We’re here, Duo. Come on, let’s see if Sally is on duty.”
She watched him as she slid off the bike and helped him. She frowned as she noticed he was barely coherent. “Duo?”
“Hmm?” He paused, then replied, “I’m ok. Just t me me to your room.”
She growled, ”You are NOT alright. We’re seeing Sally.”
He leaned on her and didn’t answer.
They limped up to the call button and Hilde rang it.
“Yes?”
“Is Sally Po on duty tonight?”
“Yes. Who is this?”
“Hilde Schbeicker and Duo Maxwell.”
“ OK. Do you want her to come to the door?”
“Yes, can we come in?”
“What is the extent of the injuries?”
“Bruises, broken bones maybe? I’m not sure.”
“OK, Sally will right there.” The voice replied through the scratchy box. The buzzer rang and the door slid open slowly.
As soon as Hilde pulled Duo in, Sally was there.
“Hilde! Duo, What happened?”
“He was beat up, Sally. I…… um……” She stuttered for words.
Sally lead Duo to the wheelchair near the door and pushed him into it. She looked back at Hilde and said softly, “I know what’s going on, Hilde.”
Hilde’s mouth opened slightly as Sally pushed past her.
“How do you……”
“Come on, I’ll explain while I check him out.”
“I’m still here,” Duo complained, “So don’t talk like …….”
“Shhhh, Duo, we know , save your strength.”
He leaned back and closed his eyes, Relaxing as he listened to the two women talk. Their soft voices lulled him to a light slumber the was rudely interrupted when Sally poked his sore ribs.
“OW!” He hollered. “SALLY! THAT HURT!”
She put her hands on her hip and frowned at him. “Well, you know if you wouldn’t always go off half cocked, you wouldn’t get in so much trouble. You know , Duo, you are not invincible, even tho you are a Gundam pilot. Now You hold still while I finish up. ”
“OW! OW! “ He cried out as she continued to poke and prod him. “You’re enjoying this way too much!” He cried, as she finished up.
She turned to Hilde, “You better get back to your room. It will look bad if you are out and about when you are suppose to be confined to quarters.”
Hilde nodded, then looked over at Duo, then back to Sally. She couldn’t help it when her eyes began to fill with tears. She turned away and quickly blinked trying to make them go away. She gulped and turned back, knowing if she didn’t get away they would come unbidden.
Sally put her arm around her and lead her toward the door. “He’ll be alright, Hilde. He’s a little beat up, he has a couple of cracked ribs, but he’ll be ok. I’ll send him to your room when I’m done.”
“But .. I’m……. won’t you get in trouble?”
“Doctors orders… peace and quiet in a private room with some TLC.“
Hilde nodded, then looked around Sally to catch a glimpse of Duo before she left. He raised his hand and whispered , “See ya later, babe.”
She smiled and waved back and left the room. She sighed as she walked slowly down the hall from the hospital wing. She looked at the file folders in her hands. What did this all mean? She couldn’t help but let her mind wander as she made her way back to the room she was confined to. She was not paying attention as she walked and ran into a solid object, knocking the breath from her and sending her to the floor. It was just too much and she broke down. Tears came suddenly as she lay sprawled on the floor.
Heero looked down at her, watched her gasp for breath and cry at the same time. He frowned at the printed paper scattered around her. He leaned over and picked up a few pieces of paper.
“So this is what this is all about.” He mumbled , softly.
Heero picked up the papers , put them into the folder and leaned over the sobbing girl. He could hear her murmuring, “It’s all my fault. All my fault.”
He reached over and grabbed her arm, pulling her to her feet.
“What’s your fault?”
She sobbed as she leaned against his chest. “Everything.” Came the muffled reply.
“I bt bt that, if Maxwell was involved.”
She suddenly backed away , pushing herself away from him. “Heero.” She said, trying to get her composure back.
“I know what you two are up to.”
She blinked and stepped back away from him farther.
“I think I’ll escort you to Your room. I understand you just came from the restroom.”
Hilde looked up at him as he grasped her arm and pulled her toward her room.
“What? “ She asked in shock as he pulled her along.
“I talked to Une. I know what you two were up to, so shut up and come along.” He growled at her.
She said nothing and let him lead her to her room. When they got there a guard was stand by the door. He looked at Hilde in shock, Wondering how she had gotten out.
“You didn’t do your job very well. I suggest you go before I report you to Une. I’ll take over from here.”
The guard looked at Heero and nodded.
“Yes, Sir, Captain Yuy.”
Heero said nothing as he watched the guard scamper away from the Door.
He opened it and pushed Hilde in. “I’ll leave it unlocked for Duo when Sally is done with him. “
She frowned. “How did you know……?”
He pulled the door shut in her face, vingving her question unanswered and her staring at the inside of the door.
“Ass.” She said as she threw the folder on the dresser and went to the bed. She flopped down on it and sighed. She stretched out, trying to release the tension she felt. How did Sally know, or even Heero know what she and Duo had been up to? She toed off her shoes and dropped off her pants , pulling the covers over her. “How did they know?” She whispered as her eyes closed in exhaustion.
Heero watched as the weary beaten boy approached the door. He leaned against it and stopped him, with a hand on his chest.
“Where do you think you’re going, Maxwell?”
“I’m going in to see my girl.” Duo said, softly, trying not to show Heero the pain his hand was causing him.
“Next time you plot something , you tell me.” He growled as he pulled his hand away and stepped from the door.
Duo nodded and said ,”Yeah, Sure.” As he slipped into the dark room. As soon as the door closed he mumbled “Like hell.”
He stumbled in the dark as his eyes adjusted. Duo listened to Hilde’s soft breathing as he moved toward the bed. He slipped off his shoes, socks, pants and shirt, leaving them in a small pile on the floor, then climbed in beside the sleeping girl. He wrapped his arms around her and nuzzled against her neck soaking up her warm and closing his eyes. A few minutes later he too was sound asleep.
Else where in the building:
In Une’s Office, Three people gathered to watch the video and decide what they should do about the situation.
“Heero.”
Heero turned to look at Une, saying nothing, his face impassive.
Sally said nothing, but she was fuming inside. She clenched her fists but didn’t open her mouth. Wu Fei had been right. He had told her not to trust her, that she could get them all killed.
Heero stared at Une, his face never changing. “What you did was wrong.” He stated.
She blanched and looked away. “I know, but I didn’t know of any other way.”
“Liar. Who’s side are you on?” He asked, the contempt in his voice , strong.
Une sighed and sat down, “Honestly I am on your side but this man is big…. Someone had to go in and find what we needed. We could clean up after word but it had to be some one else not totally associated with us.” She shook her head. “It wasn’t suppose to go down like it did.”
Sally growled, “Yeah, no kidding! No one was suppose to get hurt.”
“Did anyone any papers or files?”
Heero nodded, “Yes , I saw them briefly. This man has his fingers in everything. I hope these few files are enough, but I bet they won’t be.”
“Then we’ll let Hilde decide the next move. I gave the project to her in a round about way. She will follow it till the very end.”
Heero frowned. “Are you trying to save your own hide here ,Une or the Preventers as a whole?”
She glared at him, “What are you implying , Heero?”
He shrugged, “Answer the question. If you don’t then I know you’re just saving your self.”
“Of course, I want to save the Preventers. The Earth alliance needs them. I can’t name the number of small problems they have solved. We are getting to close to this man and he wants us shut down. He has no reason to do this.”
Heero nodded slightly, still not totally trusting the woman in front of him.
“Sally, you seem to want to say something.” Une asked as she turned to her.
“No, I don’t have anymore to say. I said my piece about this the other day. I stand by it.”
All right , you are dismissed.”
Heero stood and left with out a backward glance. Sally stood and looked once at Une before closing the door behind her.
As soon as the door closed, Une dropped into her chair and sighed. She folded her hand s and looked to the ceiling. “Oh, Mr. Treize, I wish you were here, you would know how to deal with this. I hope I’m doing the right thing.”
Sally caught up with Heero as he moved down the hall in a quick pace.
“Heero!”
He stopped and turned toward her, his face expressionless.
“What do you think of all this?”
His expression never changed. “She ‘s doing this wrong. There has to be another way.”
Sally nodded. “Just because she cleaned it up this time what will happen next time?”
Heero shrugged.
“You know there will be a next time.”
He nodded slightly. “ I know.” *** but I will be there, next time.***
