Part 10

Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the Gundam boys, I just like to imagine them in my own little world (which is totally of my making). No profits are made from this story, just gratuitous pleasure.

Summary: They were thrust together at the age of 14, members of an assassins guild, then rudely ripped apart at the age of 21. Now, three years later, Duo walks back into Heero's life. The rollercoaster ride has just begun as they must learn to live together once more and to love each other again. Life isn’t always easy, living with Duo, and Heero has to fight hard to remember that.

Feedback is appreciated. I enjoy hearing from all of my readers. That you take the time to read is great, that you take the time to write is awesome. You are what makes writing worth while. I hope that you enjoy reading it.

My sincere thanks to the following:

Chibi_Dilandau: Thanks for your support. Yes, perhaps he is a bit too controlling, but Duo is the only thing in his life that he ever had control of and he’s not willing to give it up just yet.

Diane Rainwater: Thank you for your continuing support. I’m sorry to leave you hanging, but I have to stop somewhere, otherwise it would just keep rolling on until it was one long massive chapter. But it keeps you wanting more. And as for Quatre, that’s just part of Duo's allure, attracting attention from those around him.

Pull the Trigger and the Nightmare Stops…

“dear my friends in the time we've spent forever after beyond this when will our nightmare ever end?
pull the trigger and the nightmare stops...”

Part 10

The vibration of the phone in his hand woke him. It was dark and very quiet. He looked at the newest message.

‘Be ready. Things have changed. Love you.’

Duo snapped the phone close softly, dropped it and gripped his gun, listening. There. He could hear the slight sound of footsteps in the hallway, nearing his door. He tensed, waiting.

The door opened quietly and a figure appeared, gun held ready. Duo's gun was pointed at the intruders chest. A man’s figure stood silhouetted in the darkness of the doorway.

“Well, well, well, Mrs Yuy, so nice to see you again,” came the oily voice of John Macalister, Heero's intrepid partner. “You’re looking ravishing tonight. Really fuckable. I just wish that I had the time to spend on you that you deserve. Oh, and you’re armed and dangerous, I see. I like that in pretty boys. Really turns me on. So, what? Going to kill me, Mrs Yuy?”

“The thought has crossed my mind, several times in fact,” Duo replied, taking careful aim.

“You know, we’ll die together, because all I have to do is stand here and shoot. You, on the other hand, have to move, aim and shoot. You may get me, I’m fairly sure you will in fact, knowing your excellent training and reputation as a killer, but I know you’ll die along with me,” said Mac, conversationally.

“Are you so ready to die, then?” asked Duo, shifting a fraction.

“Yes. To carry out my mission, I’ll die if I need to, and do it happily. But what about you, Mrs Yuy? Are you ready to die? Knowing that you’ll never see your beloved Heero Yuy alive again? Never have him kiss your sweet lips goodbye? Not feel him run his hands through your long, beautiful hair one last time? Never have him touch your soft, tender body again? Not have him make you cry and moan in sexual bliss one last time? Never to have you cling to him like he’s the only man in the world for you? Are you ready to die and never have any of that again? Because that’s what is going to happen,” Mac drawled.

“Shut up,” said Duo, teeth clenched in anger.

“Oh, does that thought disturb you, Mrs Yuy? I’m sorry. I just though you should know how it’s going to be. I’m going to leave your beautiful body on his bed, your blood running like a virgin’s from the bullet hole I’m going to put right between those pretty purple eyes of yours. He’ll walk into hell, knowing that you’ll never run to greet him with open arms ever again,” Mac sneered.

“Shut up!” cried Duo, trembling and panting slightly.

“Do you think he’ll stay faithful to your memory, this time? He’ll see your dead body, there won’t be any doubts, this time. He’ll know that you’re not coming back, this time. Do you think he’ll wait very long to drown his sorrow in some other young boy’s sweet body? Kiss another boy’s tender lips, whisper sweet words of love into someone else’s ears… Maybe it will even be his good friend, Chang WuFei. I know they’ve been close in the past, I’m sure Mr Chang wouldn’t hesitate to comfort his distraught friend,” Mac’s wide grin twisted as Duo's hand tightened fractionally, ready to put a bullet into Mac’s lying heart.

“Come on, Duo Maxwell, let’s go to hell together,” hissed Mac, his arm muscles tightening.

“Not tonight,” came a deep tenor voice, a hand grabbing Mac’s wrist and twisted the gun up as it went off, an arm drawn tightly around his throat while the unknown assailant threw the two of them to the ground as Duo fired at the same moment, the bullet passing harmlessly through the spot where Mac had stood not more then a heartbeat before.

It was over quickly. Mac was subdued and Trowa was beside the shaking, crying Duo, relieving him of his weapon, then pulling him into his arms, trying to calm the distraught young man. In the background they could faintly hear Quatre screaming something, but they couldn’t make out the words.

Duo clung tightly to Trowa, shivering, tears flowing as Trowa patiently held him. Heero appeared at the door, glanced down at Mac then turned his attention to the two on the bed.

“Duo, let me get Heero for you,” said Trowa, trying to disengage the distraught boy as he spotted Heero over Duo's shoulder.

“No. No, please. I don’t want him to see me like this. Not yet. I can’t let him know that I fell apart. I can’t let him know that I disgraced him,” Duo sobbed, tears running down his face. “Just give me a few minutes, please?”

Heero nodded and quietly backed away from the door.

Heero walked back to Quatre's room, where the highly agitated young man was still screaming obscenities and insults as to Trowa's birth and parentage, and what he was going to do to him when he finally got free from his prison, and tried to calm the blonde enough to get him to talk rationally.

“Quatre,” called Heero.

“Trowa Barton, you son of a bitch,” screamed Quatre, “you get your rat bastard ass down here and unlock this fucking door. I’m going to so kick your whore mongering ass when I get my hands on it, you scum sucking bastard!”

“Quatre, shut it!” Heero commanded.

“Ye… yes, Heero,” Quatre stuttered to a stop in mid-rant.

“Where’s the key pad for the door?” Heero asked.

“I don’t know,” said Quatre, tearfully. “I didn’t know he could do this to me. Where’s Trowa? Is he alright? He’s not hurt, is he? I heard gun shots.”

“He’s fine. He’s in with Duo at the moment,” Heero replied, taking out his phone. “Give me a few, I’ll get you out. Hello? Simon? Yuy, here. Yes. All under control, you can send in a pick up team. Yes, Trowa took him out. No, he’s still alive, Duo didn’t do it, thankfully. Yes. Yes. He felt the need to gloat in front of Duo, that gave us the time we needed to get him alive.

“Say, Quatre is locked in his room. Where is the key pad and what’s the code so I can let him out? No, Trowa's in with Duo. He kind of lost it a bit, and, ah, doesn’t want me to see him this way. No, he’ll be fine. I’ll take care of him once Trowa calms him down a bit. I’m sure, but thanks anyway. It’s best if I handle it on my own. Duo would never trust a stranger enough to talk.

“Right. Okay, well, I’ll keep Quatre from inflicting too much harm on Trowa. Yes, he’s royally pissed right now. Um. Maybe. We’ll see. If not, I’ll take him out and get him drunk. Hn. Yeah. Okay, well I see the containment crew. WuFei is bringing them in. Yes, he certainly has been a great help. Yes, it is. Alright, then, I’ll check back later. Thanks, Simon.”

“Quatre?” Heero called again.

“Yes, Heero?” Quatre answered, his voice still quavering a bit.

“I’m going to let you out, but you have to promise me that you won’t go storming into my bedroom yelling at Trowa, alright?” Heero asked. “Duo's already upset enough. He doesn’t need anything more to upset him tonight.”

“I promise, Heero,” Quatre said in a choked voice through the locked door.

“Heero? Thanks for getting me out of there,” Quatre cried, throwing himself into Heero's arms when he opened the door. “How could he do that to me?”

“It’s his job to protect you,” Heero replied. “He did what he had to do.”

“You guys. You all knew what was going to happen, didn’t you?” Quatre accused, as Heero took him into the kitchen and set about making some tea. “You and WuFei didn’t have to go anywhere. Trowa didn’t have anything to take care of tonight. You guys set this all up so we’d be here alone. Was Duo in on this too? Was I the only one who didn’t know about it?”

“Simon told us that threats had been made against Duo. He wanted him here, so he’d be safe, and so that we could get the terrorists. We didn’t think the interior defenses would be breached,” explained Heero. “You should have never even know about it. If I’d have had any say in it, I would never have told Duo about it, either, although I’m glad we did. No one should have ever been able to get inside of this house. We didn’t count on the assailant being my ex-partner, Mac. He knew too much about this place and how the security was set up.”

“But why couldn’t Trowa just tell me? Why did he have to keep it such a secret? He’s never hidden anything from me before,” Quatre asked plaintively.

“Because Simon told me not to,” said Trowa from the doorway. He looked at Heero and nodded.

“But you work for me! And you’re my lover!” Quatre retorted.

“I am your lover, and I do work for you, but ultimately, I take orders from Simon,” Trowa replied.

“So, nothing I say really counts?” asked Quatre, getting quite angry.

Heero took the opportunity to slip out and head for his bedroom to see how Duo was doing, leaving the lovers to work things out on their own.

“Of course, what you say counts, but there are times when I have to disregard that. Direct orders from Simon carry the weight of your father’s words behind them, and I must obey them,” Trowa tried to explain.

“I see. So, I’m your lover and confidant only when its convenient for you,” Quatre said coldly.

“It’s not like that, love,” said Trowa, trying to sooth him, putting his arms around his angry lover.

“That’s not how I see it,” Quatre said, shrugging him off.

“Quatre…” Trowa began.

“It’s Master Quatre to you, since you are an employee of my father’s. That’s how all of his employees address me,” said Quatre spitefully.

“Fine, Master Quatre. If you don’t need me any longer, I’m going to bed. I’ve been up all night,” said Trowa, turning away abruptly.

“Not in my bed you’re not!” retorted Quatre.

“Fine. I’ll be sleeping in the employees loft, if you need me,” said Trowa sadly, and quickly left the kitchen before Quatre could speak again.

Quatre just sat, stunned, mouth hanging open. Trowa had just spurned him! He wasn’t supposed to do that. That wasn’t how the game was played. He was supposed to beg forgiveness so they could go back to bed together. But Trowa was a simple man, not one given to indulging in games. And so he refused to play the game using the rules that Quatre was following, and Quatre was at a loss of what to do. All alone now, he went meekly to his cold, empty bed.

Heero found Duo curled up in his bed, looking pale and drawn. He walked in and sat down on the bed, reaching to stoke the hair back out of Duo's face.

“Hey, babe, you alright now?” Heero asked gently.

“Yeah. I… I kind of lost it when he started throwing out those comments. I’m sorry,” said Duo, turning his eyes away from Heero's. “Please, forgive me. I disgraced you. I failed you. I couldn’t shoot in time.”

“That’s alright, babe. It gave Trowa a chance to get him before anything serious happened. We really didn’t want a fire fight here in the house. I didn’t want you die,” said Heero, stroking his face.

“Yeah, you couldn’t have me die before you got to me. That’s your privilege, killing me,” said Duo in a shaky voice, rolling to his back, eyes closed.

“What do you mean, babe?” asked Heero, puzzled.

“You said that if I ever let another man touch me again, you were going to kill me. And that wasn’t a threat. So, I guess I’m ready,” said Duo, opening tired looking eyes, red from crying.

“I’m not going to kill you, babe,” Heero said, still stroking his face.

“Why not? I let Quatre kiss me, feel me up, I even let him grope me before I pushed him away. He asked me to go to bed with him,” said Duo in a calm voice.

“I know. I saw it and I heard it all. You didn’t do anything wrong, Duo. It was just a heat of the moment thing, you didn’t do anything,” said Heero, excusing it.

“I still remember the lesson you taught me the first time another man ever touched me. And that was done in the line of duty. I had bruises on my face for weeks after that session of my schooling. And you told me that I belonged to you and that if I ever let another man touch me again, you would kill me. You said it so calmly, so matter of factly. So, I’m waiting for you to keep that promise,” said Duo, obstinately, needing to feel Heero's anger about what happened between himself and Quatre to help him replace the fear and doubt that had crept into his heart with Mac’s words, especially the ones about WuFei.

“I was young, and I was jealous. I wanted you so badly and I couldn’t even put a finger on you, yet some mark got to kiss you, see you half naked with your hair down, put his hand on your cock. And I couldn’t even kiss you. You were my wife. Of course I was angry,” said Heero. “But that was a long time ago, we were young and I was a very stupid boy. Things have changed. I’m not that angry young boy any more. I can forgive things, now, that I couldn’t back then.”

“What if I tell you that I enjoyed his kisses? That I was very tempted to let him have his way? That I actually thought about letting him fuck me, for a moment?” Duo taunted. “Especially after you telling me to go to bed, as if I was a child. What if I said I wanted to go to bed with him? What then?”

“That wouldn’t make me happy, if that was how you were really feeling,” said Heero, putting his hands in his lap and looking down at them. “But it was just a thought, there was no action, so I really can’t be angry. Though I would be upset if it happened again.”

“So, I can think about it, I just can’t do it? So long as my actions are pure, it’s okay? What if he wants to continue where we left off at some point? Maybe I should accommodate him, since it doesn’t seem to bother you as much, now that you’re not a boy any longer,” Duo taunted him more, coming dangerously close to Heero's breaking point. “Maybe you’d even like to watch. Did you enjoy it last night, seeing him kissing me and touching me?”

At that point, Heero snapped. He was on the bed and on Duo before the other could react, and had delivered two stinging slaps to Duo's face. He had one hand closed tightly around Duo's throat, the other poised to punch. At the last moment, he simply slapped Duo twice more, but still his fingers squeezed the flesh under them.

“Is this what you want?” he hissed, then let go as Duo started to choke and gasp. He slapped Duo once more then threw himself off of the bed, sitting on the floor next to it, shaking at the effort to control the rage that Duo had provoked in him.

What the hell was Duo trying to prove? Why did he feel the need to provoke these feelings of anger that Heero tried so hard to suppress? It had angered him that Duo let Quatre crawl all over him, but in the light of everything else, Heero had been willing to forget about it. Why had Duo felt the necessity to drag it out into the open? The need to throw it in his face? Why, when he knew how Heero was going to react?

He abruptly got to his feet, turning to look at his crying lover, face turned into the pillows, back turned towards him. He sat on the bed again and put a hand on Duo's shoulder.

“Duo?” he called softly. “Duo, look at me.”

Duo refused to turn his face, so Heero ran his hand to the front of Duo's shoulder and rolled him to his back. Duo brought his hands up to his face, but Heero gently pulled them away. He had a cut on his lip that was oozing a little blood, the start of a nice black eye and a big bruise on his cheek. There was just a little bruising under the other eye, and a scratch on his jaw. He also bore a full set of marks around his throat, angry purple marks that left one in no doubt of how they had been made.

“I’ll get you some ice,” Heero said with a sigh and headed for the kitchen.

Duo closed his tired indigo eyes as the tears slid down his face. Well, he’d provoked Heero's anger, and it had quelled his fear, but now he hurt. Had it been worth it? Probably not. There were surely better ways to handle fear then by trying to get your lover to kill you. He felt the chill of the ice pack that Heero laid on his bruising face, and the warmth of Heero's fingers as he tipped back his chin to inspect the finger marks that he had left on Duo's neck. Neither of the two said anything as Heero sat, stroked the hair back from Duo's face, and soon Duo fell asleep under his gentle touch. He didn’t feel it when Heero slid into the bed with him, cuddling up against his back, holding him protectively in his arms as they slept.
