I also do not own the song or lyrics One Night in Bangkok by Murry Head.
I had no idea that the song was actually part of a larger stage show named ‘Chess’ written by Benny Andersson, Bjor Ulvaeus and Tim Rice. Which I own no rights to either.
I am not making any money from this work of fanfiction.
A/N- This is actually a G/V get together fic. However, some of the other pairings may surprise you. :) I think there’s only one cannon couple in here. Obviously VERY A/U.
I hope this is a fun read for anyone who may be interested in such a combination.
Beta’d by Hoshi. Thank you Hoshi! (And thanks to rdk for catching a few others).
(DBZ/chess (the game, not the play.))
Rating – PG13 – or at least that’s what I was hoping for.
Warnings – OOC, A/U, mentions and kisses of M/M, mentions and kisses of M/F, chess, foul language, some minor roles of OC’s.
Round 9
Vegeta found Goku without much trouble. The problem he was having was looking away from the other table as Chichi quietly chatted with the lady sitting next to her.
His attention was drawn away as the air seemed to weigh down in the room. Vegeta stood as his opponent approached the table. When the elderly man had first entered the room something had seemed off about him. It took Vegeta a moment to figure it out, but his sense of smell was just as good, and apparently better, than sight when it came to recognizing persons.
Chichi did not quite understand Vegeta’s obvious veneration of the man, but she followed the Prince’s example.
“Greetings Ka..” Vegeta started to say before the man held out a hand in caution.
“Sage.” The man supplied.
“Sage.” Vegeta finished lamely. Why was he here? Should he be worried?
The elderly man gave a dry ghost of a laugh. “No worries. This is just routine. You didn’t think I could do my job by just staying up there all the time, did you? I had no idea you would be here your Highness.. es.” He corrected himself as he looked at Chichi.
Chichi had a moment to wonder how the man possibly knew she was a princess before the gong sounded getting everyone’s attention.
“I trust everyone is enjoying themselves?” Mr. Shore asked the group. A round of applause and some cheering greeted his question. “Well then…let the games begin!”
Once again servers stepped up to the tables. Vegeta looked at the pieces and wondered where to start. Usually he had no qualms with eliminating an enemy, but he was not certain why the Earth’s Guardian was here.
“Just a friendly match, young fellow. I assure you I won’t be too disappointed to have to return home early from this weeks match.” Sage randomly said, as his old eyes scanned the other players in the room.
Vegeta nodded, acknowledging what the other was saying, without saying. He moved his King’s pawn forward two places.

Chichi sat at the edge of her seat through the last few moves watching the game between Vegeta and Sage. She had intended to mingle with the rest of the group as the game progressed, but that had been before she realized she was watching one of the best games she had ever seen played in her entire life. Both the men were strategists to an amazing extent, but that did not mean they were slow and deliberate. Still, there had been times one or the other had taken their time to try to calculate what the other was doing, and she had been able to observe the group around her.
If it had not been for the fact everyone around her seemed to be some sort of high profile character, she was sure some of them would have stuck out more, but here, in this circle, they all seemed so ordinary. At times, she wondered how or even if she fit in.
Vegeta’s concentration was distracted for a moment as someone laughed a couple of tables down. Sage smiled knowingly at him as his attention was quickly recaptured by the game at hand, and the prince growled lowly at himself in embarrassment at having been caught. The elderly man had witnessed this several times during this first game. He was also able to observe that it was only one laugh that distracted Vegeta. There had been many outbursts of merriment from the group at large, but they had not jostled the Sayian Prince’s focus.
Just as the time was about to ding for the next player’s turn Sage moved his rook closer to his king. When Vegeta looked up with a bit of shock in his eyes the old man smiled at him.
Three moves later Vegeta was finally able to say “Checkmate.” He sat back in his chair as though he was thoroughly worn out.
“Well done young man.” Sage congratulated him.
“You played an excellent game yourself old-timer.” Vegeta responded. “Certainly kept me on my toes.”
There was an interruption to their small talk as a tall blonde Vegeta and Chichi had met the night before came over to their table. “Would you care to join us in the dinning area?” Jane asked the group. Vegeta did not know if it was his imagination or not, but she seemed to be asking him more directly than the rest of the group.
Chichi stood, stretched, and blushed as she remembered what sort of crowd she was in, but no one seemed to have noticed her uninhibited behavior. She watched as Sage stood slowly and all three of them were able to hear joints snapping into place as he moved. Chichi moved around the table in order to help him stand a little straighter. “Would you mind keeping an old man company to the next room the young lady was talking about?” The Elder asked her.
Chichi looked over at Vegeta and asked, “You don’t mind?”
Vegeta shook his head. “No. I don’t mind at all.”
Sage patted Chichi’s hand before speaking to Jane and Vegeta. “You two go on ahead. We’ll be a little slow to follow.”
The two of them nodded in understanding before taking off to find Bulma and Eddie. Vegeta hoped Bulma’s brother would already be there.
“We have to find a way to get them together.” Sage spoke as they took careful steps towards the same destination.
“Those two?” Chichi asked in amazement as she caught one last glimpse at Vegeta’s back.
“Oh, no.” Sage shook his head and chuckled. “Vegeta has his mind set on someone else entirely. Unfortunately, both of them seem to be skittish facing each other. ”
The young woman could not help but fall into the social intrigue. “Who?”
They stopped mid walk as Sage looked at her. “I thought you already knew.”
“Vegeta hasn’t shown much interest in anybody, except for Bulma and Goku…and that’s because of their association with Capsule Corporation and its technology.”
“I think his interest was about the technology, now he has found something or someone else to be interested in.” Sage said conspiratorially, laughing as he got a rise out of the Ox King’s daughter.
“Spit it out, I already asked ‘who’.” Chichi said as they started once more in the direction of the dinning hall.
“Where’s the respect for your Elders I was depending so much upon to get me to the next room?” Sage asked, his question dripping with insincere disappointment.
Chichi turned to him. “I lost it. I know how sharp your mind is old man. I just watched you play one heck of a game of chess, remember?”
“You young’nes. Always so disrespectful.” Sage was happy the princess knew he was just playing. He decided to be mischievous. “I’ll give you a hint then. It is one of the Briefs siblings.”
Chichi laughed. “That’s not to hard then. Bulma’s the only girl in that equation.”
Sage patted her wrist. “So young.”

Goku decided Jane had not been too far from the truth when she said her brother and his sister would have the dinning room turned into a lab by the time the first game was over. He had no idea where the two of them had found the permanent marker stash, but he hoped Mr. Shore was not going to be too put out by having to repaint the library turned dinning room, turned into classroom.
He snuck up behind his sister quietly while she was still explaining something to Eddie. “I see you can write faster than I can punch.” He said cheerfully right next to her ear.
Bulma squealed before rounding on her brother and smacking him in the chest. As she shook the sting out of her fingers she realized both Eddie and she had quite an audience. She blushed as she realized how much attention their scribbles had drawn from their group of peers. Several people could be seen eating and gapping at the work on their dinning surface.
She blushed deeper as Mr. Shore came into the room, his mouth open to announce something, took a look at the tables and walls, and then walked out as quickly as he had come. “Oh, that can’t be good.” Eddie said. Bulma nodded her head in agreement.
Goku just shook his head at the two of them before turning to gaze at their most current work. “Exactly what are you two trying to create in here?”
“Trying to use the time to best plot out how your father’s gravity field will help test launch simulations.” Eddie explained. He started pointing towards the wall and explaining the bits before the small group, but Goku’s attention was no longer on him.
Vegeta had just walked in with Jane. The man absolutely took his breath away. The prince had either not brought, or decided not to wear his jacket in the hall for the evening, and the clothing he wore did not hide the fact he was very powerfully built.
Jane had been polite on their way in, pointing out people Vegeta may have an interest in and their names, but she fell silent a few steps before they entered the hall. She hoped it would be of little use to talk to the prince once they had entered the dinning area. It would give her a good idea as to where his thoughts were about Goku. She was not disappointed. The slightly shorter man’s eyes found their focus immediately. It seemed he did not even notice the drawings all over the walls. She gently slid her arm out from Vegeta’s as the man’s strides lengthened.
Goku blinked dazedly as the prince stalked up to him. He seemed to be frozen. Bulma noticed her brother was unnaturally quiet and turned to watch as he seemed to make the worst social blunder he ever made in her presence. “You mentioned something about manual combat last night?” Goku had no idea why those were the first words out of his mouth and almost dropped his eyes from the other’s gaze before Vegeta smirked. Some how the play of the prince’s lips both encouraged him and left him floundering.
“I did.” Vegeta did not try to hide his interest in the man before him. Something had happened to his hair since the night before and burgundy was a stunning color on him. “Do you fight?” Vegeta asked, trying to gauge the man without his scouter to aid him.
Goku grinned shyly and reached his hand behind his head. Before he could answer, Bulma cut in. “He’s the World’s Champion. Where have you been? Under a rock?”
“Easy Bulma.” Eddie asked of the other scientist. Quite frankly he was shocked at her outburst. Then he recognized the sibling pride for what it was and could not really blame her.
Choking his sister seemed to be a great plan at the moment to Goku. He was glad Eddie had cut in before he had a chance to react to his sister’s comment. He turned his attention back to Vegeta. “I compete. I wouldn’t say I fight unless I have too.”
“Non-sense young man.” An elderly voice interceded in the conversation. “Of course, if I remember correctly, it seemed as though the last World’s Martial Arts Tournament turned into a fight more than a competition.”
Goku was certain he had never seen the man walking with princess Chichi before. “Ah, you saw that?” Goku chuckled nervously. It still made him uneasy to think of how close Piccolo Jr. had been to winning that fight. He had not realized any of the camera crews had managed to air the entire encounter.
Chichi’s mind began to churn with ideas. She had been very disappointed a drought in her kingdom had kept her at home rather than going to the tournament to participate in it herself. Now she was glad she had not had the chance to go. She recognized this man in front of her, even if he did not reciprocate. She could have already been married and never have met Radditz. She spoke boldly as an idea finally fully formed. “Would you folks be interested in coming to my place tomorrow before coming here? I’d love to see your styles and test my skills.”
“What a lovely idea!” Sage exclaimed before anyone could say other wise. He hid his smile behind the farce of coughing.
Chichi ran with it from there. “I mean all of you. Vegeta’s been hinting at being interested in the technologies of both of your companies. It would give you all a comfortable setting to get to know each other better.”
Vegeta smirked. He liked the idea more and more.
Bulma turned to Goku. One look and she did not need to ask him what his thoughts were on the matter. Instead she spoke to the Laurel twins. “How about it? You guys okay with getting together in the middle of the day?”
“How about later in the evening for us? Say 6 pm?” Jane asked.
Goku seemed to be jumping out of his skin in anticipation. “Ah! That’s not enough time to spar!”
Bulma rolled her eyes at her brother’s antics. “Where are you guys staying? I think I’ll have you pick me up if it isn’t too inconvenient.”
“The Banyan Tree. And you?” Eddie asked.
“Intercontinental.” Bulma stated.
“Where do you live? Can we get directions?” Jane asked Chichi while pulling out her palm pilot.
“Oh…uh…20 miles due east of Yangon.” Chichi was a little embarrassed that her father insisted they live so far away from any real cities. It just seemed so silly to her at times. Not to mention how difficult it was to invite people over without guiding them to her home.
Jane was busy pressing her palm pilot until she had a read out on Chichi’s home. “Well, I’ll have to look again in the morning or something. To dark to see what it looks like now.”
“What do you mean?” Chichi asked.
“Our satellites are very good, but I can’t see great detail in the dark.” Jane explained. “I do have a lock on your place though. How long does it take you to get here?”
“Depends on who drives and what they drive. If it’s me in a hover car, about an hour.” Chichi offered. “Will you need directions?” Chichi turned and asked Goku.
Goku seemed to be daydreaming for a moment before he answered her. “Nope, as long as you are home tomorrow, I should be able to find you. Your ki is actually fairly high.”
Vegeta’s eyes narrowed contemplatively at the mention of ki. If this man was able to read it without the aid of a scouter, then maybe he could teach how to read it also? That would be a very interesting tool. The prince was glad he had kept his suppressed throughout both the evenings.
“Do you mind too much if I bring some friends along?” Goku asked his hostess.
“Do they eat as much as your sister says you do?” Chichi asked. She resisted the urge to look at Vegeta. She and her cooks were going to have another gathering to feed, or so it seemed. Maybe she could get Vegeta and his men to help out.
Goku blushed and hung his head. “No” he told her, as everyone else but Vegeta laughed.
“Then it should be no problem!” Chichi said, just as the gong sounded for the second round to start.
There was a bit of shuffling as the three actual competitors started to head in the same direction at the same time. Goku almost ran the poor man over and ended up helping to steady him. “Walk me back, will you?” The old man asked the favor of Goku.
Goku watched as Vegeta strode ahead and felt someone patting his hand. “He’s not going any where fast. I can assure you of that.”
Goku grinned down at the Elder. “I never did catch your name.” He stated as they headed in the direction of the tournament room.
“Oh, I think you already know me.” Sage smiled up at him.
Goku looked down at the man, finally looking at him directly. The man had an aura about him that made it so easy to forget he was actually there. “Oh, Kami.” Goku said quietly.
“About damned time you figured it out boy.” Earth’s Guardian grinned up at him.
“What are you doing here?” Goku asked, suddenly thinking of the last time Kami had decided to possess someone to come down to Earth undetected.
“Came to check on a couple of trouble makers. They seem to be behaving themselves so far.” Kami said.
“Who?” Goku asked, wondering if he should be on his guard.
“Don’t see the need for you knowing, Goku.” Kami stated.
Goku let the matter drop.
