We've all seen our fair share of death, but only Duo has watched people he cared about slowly fade from an illness that can't be reasoned with. We were each handling it in our own way, and I'm not sure how well that was going with the others beneath the surface. But, as for myself, I felt like I was ready to pull my hair out.
I didn't want to watch someone so strong grow weak. I didn't realize it would happen so fast. And all I could think about was how incredibly unfair it was. Why was this happening to someone who'd given so much? The entire human race had him to thank for the fact they were still alive. He should be living the high life, not struggling just to live.
And it reminded me of something I'd once known clearly but years of peace had dulled. Life was precious. You never knew when it could be snuffed out. I had to make things right with Duo... If I could just get the stubborn ass to listen to me.
He says I'm the one who never listens, but he's the one who's so great at hiding, and if he can find a way to hide from what you're telling him, he will. We've fought over this constantly. I had no idea when we started dating exactly how jealous he could get. At first I thought it was cute, but when he started glaring at people for talking to me, I didn't find it so cute anymore. And no one, lover or not, tells me who I can or can't talk to. I'm not a possession. I'm his partner. At least, I hope I still am.

Blue eyes narrowed as they skimmed the information on his computer screen. He rolled his chair to the side and snatched a file, perusing the report Trowa had sent in that morning. At first it had appeared to be a cut and dried case. Weapons were being sold to a small band. It seemed the very early beginnings of a rebellion. But from what Heero found, it was bigger than that.
He grabbed the phone. “It's Yuy, I need to talk to Une.”
“She's in a meeting,” her secretary informed him.
“Then get her out. This can't wait.”
“Hold on.” The line went silent for several minutes. He raked a hand through his hair, frustration growing as he waited. He paused, going cold as he pulled his hand in front of his fact. He clenched his fist around a clump of hair.
“What's going on, Yuy?”
He started at the sudden voice and had trouble finding his own. His stomach rolled and he swallowed. “You need to pull Trowa and the others out now.” He ignored the tremor in his voice and hoped she wouldn't notice it.”
“Why?”
“I'll email you what I found. This is bigger than we thought. It needs more preparation.”
He dropped the hair in the trash can, forcing himself to focus on the task at hand. He sent her what he'd found and she cursed softly. “All right, I'll bring them back. Are you okay?”
He dropped his eyes to the trash. He'd only started the chemo two weeks ago. Was it supposed to happen that fast? “I'm going home.”
“What's wrong? Should I send Sally up to see you?”
“No.” His stomach rolled again and he dropped the phone. Damn side effects. By the time he finished heaving his guts up, he'd forgotten he was on the phone. He pulled to his feet with a grip on his desk. He paused once he was standing, fighting off a wave of dizziness. Bathroom and then home, he needed to rinse his mouth and splash some cool water over his face. He stumbled from his office and leaned against the wall. The bathroom was in sight, but his legs had decided they weren't going any further and he slid to the floor.
“Yuy!”
“Heero!”
The cries overlapped each other, accompanied by the sound of feet running down the hall. He looked up as Preventers began leaning out of their offices. He rubbed his forehead and pulled his hand through his hair before he thought better of it. Sally and Wufei knelt in front of him, Une remained standing and gazed down at him with pursed lips.
“What happened?” Sally asked as she felt his forehead.
“Got dizzy,” he whispered weakly, dropping his eyes to the hair in palm.
She put her hand over it. “It's okay, Heero. It's going to be okay.”
He leaned his head back to the wall, closing his eyes. “I'm tired.”
Une swallowed. “Take him home, Chang.”
Wufei nodded and gripped Heero's elbow gently. “Can you stand?”
“Yeah.” Once he was on his feet he leaned heavily against the Chinese man for several moments, waiting for his vision to clear. Another hand gripped his other elbow and he looked into Duo's concerned face.
“I'm all right.”
“Like hell you are,” the braided man muttered as they lead him out of the building. Duo held him as Wufei unlocked and opened the passenger side door. Heero fell into the seat and looked up to Duo.
“My office.”
“I'll shut everything down and lock it up.”
“Thanks. The keys are in the top drawer of my desk. I sent Une some information on the case Trowa is working. Look over it and see if you can find anything I missed.”
Duo shook his head. Only Heero Yuy would be worried about some case while he was so sick. He gripped the door in his right hand and braced his forearm on the top of the care before leaning down.
“Heero, go home and rest. We'll take care of everything here.”
He stared up at Duo and his throat tightened suddenly. “I'm scared, Duo.”
The quiet admission rocked the braided man to the core. Heero had said before that he was scared shitless, but it had been screamed in anger before he started looking sick. Hearing the strained whisper part pale lips and seeing the slightly sunken cheeks and shadowed eyes sent a chill through Duo. It took everything he had not to break down.
“I know,” he whispered back. “Try to get some rest.”

“She called us back, we go home.”
“But, with this information we could bring them down.”
Trowa fought the urge to roll his eyes. Normally he didn't mind too much working with rookies. Most were in awe of the fact he was a former Gundam pilot and followed his orders verbatim. But Williams had seen one too many of those detective shows and was way too trigger happy for his liking.
“We're not talking about three against ten. We're talking about three who don't have the proper resources or equipment to take on well over one hundred. That's not risky, it's called suicide.
“I didn't live this long just to put my neck on the line for no reason. I've got a pregnant girlfriend at home and a close friend who's dying. They need me to come back in one piece. Pack your things now, or I leave you here.”
Williams was too shocked by the long speech from the normally quiet Preventer to argue more. But he had latched on to one piece of information. “Who's dying?”
Trowa sighed, Une had told him what had happened so it was sure to already be milling about the office. “Heero Yuy. Get packed.”
He left the room, ignoring the gapes he was receiving from the other two.

Duo's eyes narrowed as he saw Wufei's car in the drive. He'd hoped he would have gone home before Duo got back from work. He went in through the kitchen door and froze. Normally Marty was bouncing around the kitchen making dinner and the television was playing in the living room. But the house was silent and Wufei was sitting at the table. The Chinese man stood as he entered.
“Duo-”
“I don't want to talk to you.” He pushed out the kitchen door and moved through the living room. He was surprised to see Quatre and Heero in the room. The latter was stretched out on the sofa, his head in the former's lap.
“We have to talk, Duo.”
He spun. “What is there to say? You slept with him!” He turned to storm up the stairs.
“Nothing happened.”
Duo's shoulders stiffened and he turned. “What?”
Wufei's eyes begged for the other man to believe him. “I was too drunk to drive so he brought me home. I passed out. I didn't know he'd decided to sleep over until you came in and woke us up.”
Duo snorted. “Like he'd really get you in bed and not try to take advantage of you.”
He ground his teeth. “Why are you like this?”
“Like what?”
“I'm not your possession, I'm your lover. Your jealousy and possessiveness is driving me crazy. Why can't you accept the fact that I'm with you and that no one is going to steal me from you?”
Duo stared at him, mouth working silently. He was possessive? He dropped his eyes to the floor and looked back over their years together. Sure, he asked Wufei not to talk to certain people, and he didn't want him going to the bars alone. But that was just because Wufei didn't realize how attractive he really was. He didn't see the looks other people gave him.
“I'm not possessive.”
Wufei shook his head, astonishment clear in his eyes. “You have to be kidding me. Damn it, Duo, you actually tried to forbid me from talking to someone!”
“Because he's trying to get in your pants!”
“Do you really think I would let him?”
Duo flinched and Wufei's brows drew together. “You do. You think I'm so shallow I'd throw out our years together that easily?”
“It isn't that.”
“Then what is it?”
Duo balled his hands into fists. “Everything I ever loved was taken from me. Everything! Solo, my friends, Father Maxwell and Sister Helen. I couldn't risk losing you, too.”
“So you tried to shove me into a box where you could hoard over me and make sure I wouldn't go away?”
“I had to!” He bit his lip. There was the admission. He really thought of his actions and motivations. It wasn't exactly fueled by jealousy, but he had been possessive, all based on his fear of losing someone again. And then one horrible morning in the gym had happened and he... He shook his head. He wasn't going there. Suffice to say, he'd become more afraid of losing Wufei and his actions became worse. He swallowed.
“Damn.” He took one and then another step toward Wufei. “I... I'm sorry.”
Wufei closed his eyes briefly in relief before pulling Duo into his arms tightly. “I'm not going anywhere, Duo,” he whispered. “I'm right where I want to be.”
"Why didn't you tell me nothing happened?"
He grimaced. "At first, because I was just so shocked at what happened. I mean I woke up to you screaming and I had no clue what it was about. And then you stormed out without giving me a chance to explain. That pissed me off, so I just let it go."
Duo dropped his forehead to Wufei's shoulder. “We are so screwed up.”
Wufei chuckled softly. “Yeah, pretty much. Love you.”
He raised his head to find that soft smile he loved so much and took Wufei's lips in a kiss that had them both breathless. Applause filled the room, but they ignored it. Sometimes, there were more important things than being embarrassed.
