All things considered, it couldn't be said he was stupid or ignorant. He had simply made a bad judgment call; anyone was capable of that. Lady luck, he mused as the cuffs were slapped on him, seemed to have abandoned him. Not that he blamed her; he held no delusions about himself. He was a criminal through and through. Learned everything he knew from his old man.
He'd helped rob his first bank at eleven. Had mugged his first victim in an alley at fifteen. He'd never been arrested in his twenty year span of crime, so he wasn't too surprised. It was bound to happen sooner or later. What he found really sucked, though, was the fact he got caught for something so stupid. He'd murdered, robbed, set fires, but did he get caught for anything spectacular? No, he got pulled over due to a headlight being out and, although his driving had been impeccable, failed a breathalyzer test.
Of all the things he could be arrested for, it was nothing more than a DUI. He was sure to be released, ordered to community service or something, and pay a fine. The problem was, now his prints would be on file. Now they'd have a face and name to put with the damning lines on his fingertips. He'd always been careful to never leave prints at a crime scene, but it made him a little uneasy to know he was going to have to be extra vigilant in the future. Because Harry Clark did not like the prospect of jail terms or death penalties, whether they had been earned or not.

Wufei packed the last of his things in the duffel Heero had brought and looked around the room to make sure he wasn't forgetting anything. Three weeks in the room had been more than enough for his tastes. Heero stood in the doorway, waiting to take him home. Well, take him to Heero's home. He'd been very firmly informed that going back to his own was out of the question.
He didn't mind going to Heero's apartment, but he didn't like the fact that he was being treated like he couldn't take care of himself. True, they'd gotten him, but he hadn't been in a state where he could defend himself. He vowed that wouldn't happen again.
“You ready?”
He glanced to Heero. Outside of the kiss before his surgery, nothing more had happened between them. Heero was giving him complete control over the progression of their relationship and Wufei had no clue what he was supposed to do next. The kiss he'd requested had been a desperate plea brought on by fear of possible impending death. He had wanted it, of course, and he had to admit he'd like a little more. But asking for a kiss in an extreme situation was much easier than trying to get one when death wasn't looming on the horizon.
“Yeah.” He tossed the bag over his shoulder and met Heero in the door way.
“We're not going to my apartment,” Heero said as they moved through the infirmary.
He raised an eyebrow. “Where are we going?”
“Quatre's. He already has bodyguards at every door. Rashid and the others have been informed of the situation and offered their services to help protect both of you.”
Wufei frowned. “Both of us?”
He nodded. “Duo is there, too.”
Wufei snorted. “I bet he loved that.”
Heero chuckled. “He didn't mind so much after Quatre offered to let Blake stay there, too. And now he's of the mindset it's like a slumber party.”
Wufei held back his protest as three guards walked with them to Heero's car. “I didn't see Duo today.”
“Hardly anyone did,” Heero said as he sat in the driver's seat. “He was following some lead that had him on the phone with several scientists most of the day.”
“Was it about his condition or Knight?”
“Primarily Knight, but his condition was brought up.”
Wufei glanced to Heero. “And?”
He sighed and shook his head. “None of them can help, but one said he knew someone who might be able to. Duo wasn't able to get in contact with her, though.”
Wufei looked out the window, watching the scenery pass without really seeing it. After everything that had happened, he couldn't seem to get his mind out of shock mode. He hadn't really been in the right frame of mind to think things through the first couple of weeks in the hospital, and he'd avoided thinking too much the last few days. But now that he was out and well on his way to healthy, the events of the past month flooded his mind.
And of all the things he should be focusing on, like finding Knight, his mind kept drifting back to the topic of Heero. He'd promised that once he was better he'd give 'them' a chance. His experience with relationships was very limited, and Heero wasn't giving him any insight as to what was expected. He shook off the thoughts as they reached the Winner estate, not really wanting to think about the topic any more.

Quatre swirled the wine in his glass as he listened to Blake tell a story about his and Duo's first day in the amazon that had them all laughing uproariously and Duo protesting mildly.
“And then he broke the jeep,” Blake continued with a dramatic sigh.
“Now, wait a minute, that's not true. I didn't break the jeep... I just... bent it a little.”
Blake snorted. “A little? The engine fell out.”
He shrugged. “I put it back in.”
Quatre shook his head with a smile. “How exactly did you 'bend' it?”
“Didn't get enough altitude to jump a ditch,” he answered with a small amount of chagrin.
Wufei posed his own question. “Was there not a bridge nearby you could have used?”
He waved his hand as he drained the rest of his juice. “That would've taken more time.”
“No,” Blake disagreed with a laugh. “It just wouldn't have been as much fun.”
Duo grinned. “There is that.”
Wufei smirked. “You'll never change.”
“Nope.” He sat back in his chair. “If I changed, y'all would be the most boring group known to mankind.”
“Hey,” Quatre protested. “I'm not boring, and neither is Trowa, for that matter.”
Trowa shrugged. “Comparatively, I'm probably the most boring in the group.”
“Well, I don't think so.”
With a very rare and sly grin, Trowa leaned forward. “Probably because you've seen me at my more... animated moments.”
Duo howled with laughter. “Damn, Tro, I didn't think you had it in you.”
Trowa couldn't help himself. “Oh, I do on a regular basis.”
Quatre's face flamed, Duo doubled over, he was laughing so hard no sound came out, Blake was gaping, Wufei's mouth flapped as if he wasn't sure whether to laugh or lecture, and Heero's lips were pressed tightly together, shoulders shaking.
“I can't believe you said that!” Quatre exclaimed.
“I can't believe you're bottom,” Blake deadpanned, which sent those laughing into further hysterics.
Trowa tossed a wink to Blake before putting a hand on Quatre's on the table. “First off, I was proving to Duo that I could be entertaining if I wanted to. Secondly, he walked right into the next one.”
Duo swiped his thumb under his eyes. “That was priceless, Tro. How much have you had? 'Cause I know you gotta be drunk to come up with that.”
He raised an eyebrow. “I'll have you know this is only my second.”
Duo took a breath, finally able to breathe normally. “Man, no one make me laugh again for a while, now my stomach hurts.”
“Are you sure it's not because you gorged yourself?” Wufei asked sweetly.
He thought for a moment. “Actually, it might be a combination.”
“Anyone up for poker?”
“Oh yeah!” Duo cheered. The dishes were whisked away by the kitchen staff and cards and chips were brought to the table. When they were well into their second game, Duo had fallen uncharacteristically quiet. He had his chin propped in his palm, staring down at his cards with an almost bored expression on his face.
“You all right?”
He glanced to Blake and offered a weak smile. “Yeah, just tired.”
“You want to go to bed?”
He shook his head, looking at his watch. “No, it's only eight.”
Blake set his cards down. “You need to rest.”
“Don't tell me what I need to do,” he retorted. His cell rang and he leaned back to pull it out of his pocket. “Yeah?”
“The police just turned a man over to us who has information on Knight, but he refuses to talk to anyone but you.”
He frowned. “Why me?”
“He hasn't said.”
He dropped his cards to the table. “All right, I'm on my way.” He hung up. “We've got a lead on Knight.” The excitement he should have felt over the news was drowned out by the fatigue that begged him to go crawl into his nice warm bed.

Harry stared at the guard just inside the door of the interrogation room. He hadn't twitched a muscle in an hour and it made Harry want to throw paper balls at him just to see if he would at least blink. He had panicked initially when he'd realized he'd been stupid enough to leave a print at Chang's. And due to the fact the case was still hot; the unknown print was still being matched to all who were arrested for whatever reason.
But with the information he had, there was a slight possibility he could at least keep his head on his shoulders. The good news was, none of his other less than legal exploits were known to them, but he wasn't sure how far that would go. The attempted murder of a Preventer was serious business.
The door opened and he looked up as Duo Maxwell entered, looking like he was ready to fall over. Behind him came a blond Preventer and Commander Une. Harry had never actually met Maxwell, but he'd done various jobs for Knight over the years, and had a good understanding of much of what the mad scientist did. Some of it he knew because he'd also been a test subject of the man's, one of the few outside to live.
Duo sat at the table and studied the man. “Why did you want to talk to me?”
“Because we have something in common. Knight played around with my programing, too.”
Chestnut brows raised slightly. “That so?”
He nodded. “It wasn't to cure any disease, though. I was just a guinea pig.”
Duo leaned his elbows on the table. “What did he do to you?”
“He was testing out some concoction that was supposed to strength bones and make them regenerate at a very fast pace.”
“Did it work?”
Harry nodded. “He broke several bones and within an hour they were back to normal. That was before he went completely underground. He tried to sell the idea, but it was shot down by the powers that be.”
“Why?”
He shrugged. “They said it could be dangerous. What if someone broke a leg and couldn't get help quick enough? It would mend badly and would either have to be broken again to fix it, or, in a worst case scenario, wouldn't be able to be fixed at all. He was pretty peeved at that.”
Duo nodded slowly. “I imagine so. Do you know where he is?”
“He was in the city up till a week ago.”
He ground his teeth. Knowing that he was right about Knight sticking around to gloat, it really ticked him off to know the man had slipped through their fingers. “Where is he now?”
“I don't know at the moment, but I'm sure he'll be back. He called me yesterday, wanting to know if I'd heard anything about Chang. He was sure he should've heard something about a funeral by now. Apparently he didn't check the local newspaper to see the article that proclaimed Chang alive and well. He cursed me six ways from Sunday and said I'd pay for my screw up.”
Duo sat back, dropping his hands to his lap and clenching them into fists, a slightly pained expression coming to his face. He brushed it aside for the moment. “There were two people who attacked him. Who was with you?”
“There were supposed to have been three. The day before the attack the other guy chickened out and my partner shot him several times, but he managed to get away saying we wouldn’t get away with it.”
Une's eyes narrowed slightly. “Must have been our John Doe. So who was your partner?”
“His name’s Mackenzie. Works for Knight.” He shrugged. “Anyway, the best bet you have right now for finding him again, is to keep me free so he can contact me.”
Une pursed her lips. As much as she hated to admit it, the man was right. Well, not about the 'keeping him free' part. “You'll be kept under house arrest until he contacts you again. We'll move from there.” She stood.
He looked from her back to Duo. “I know how he shut them off.”
Duo started, eyes going wide. “What?”
“The sixth implant.”
He frowned. “I only have five.”
He shook his head. “He gloated to me about it. He put in another device, where I don't know, but it controlled the others. And he controlled it.”
Duo wiped his hands on his pants. “How?”
“A remote of sorts. It was just a little device with an on/off switch. He kept it in a box in his pocket like some sort of trophy.”
“If it was turned back on, would they start functioning again?” Une asked sharply.
He raised his shoulders. “I don't know. But I do know that if you can find the implant and take it out, the others would start working again on their own.”
Duo closed his eyes. Finding a tiny implant, hidden somewhere in his body, that couldn't be detected by any medical scans was impossible. His only choice was to find that remote, which they could only do once they found Knight. He sucked in a breath and closed his eyes. He was really beginning to hate his luck.
“That's enough, Maxwell. You need to go home and rest.”
He bit his lip. “My calves...”
Blake nodded his immediate understanding and pulled out Duo's chair. He wrapped his arms around his lover's neck as Blake hooked an arm under his knees and lifted him from the chair. He buried his face in Blake's chest, humiliated as he was carried through Preventers headquarters like some kind of child.
