Chapter 10
The nursery waiting room was full of visitors, excited yet worried for the safety for Pan and the new baby. Bulma sat patiently in her seat, Chi-chi sitting to her left and Hercule sitting to her right. Bulla sat across from her mother, as Goten wrapped an arm around his worried mother. Videl and Gohan were at the edge of their seats, waiting for any news. Vegeta instantly perked up, revealing a shocked expression. Gohan, too, stood, with eyes widened. The saiyan prince instantly grabbed Gohan's shirt and pulled him to the side. "Do. Not. Tell them."
Gohan looked to the ground, a tear streaming down his face. "Vegeta, that's my daughter…"
"Are you aware of the chaos that will ensue if you tell them now?"
"They're trying to save her…" Gohan breathed, attempting to reassure himself.
"What's going on?" Bulma overheard part of the conversation.
"The baby's here," Vegeta said smoothly, loud enough for the others to hear him. Not waiting for the response of the others, he left Gohan standing by walking through the large double doors to stand in front of the window that revealed the nursery. He had to see his new grandchild on behalf of himself and, deep down, for Kakarot; he admitted to himself that the infant had deeply worried him, due to the fact that he was unsure of this power that the child could potentially possess. He observed Trunks watch the baby get weighed and measured as he chattered excitedly with the nurse. The new grandfather's eyes widened as he watched the tail flip curiously. Trunks looked to his father, smiling, and the two instantly had eye contact. The new father's smile suddenly faded and his face paled when he could not sense Pan's life anymore. He turned to the door he had entered, breathing heavily. Vegeta's eyes widened; Trunks had figured it out. Oh, Shit.
After watching his son have a few brief words with the nurse, he watched Trunks quickly leave the room. Vegeta walked down the short hallway, away from the ogling crowd, and entered the waiting room. He opened the window and flew to the other side of the hospital, following Trunks's aura. It was easy to find him, despite his gift of sensing life; His ears filled with the loudest, blood curdling scream that his son could muster. Gohan heard this scream; his heart shattered to thousands of pieces. He hugged his happy wife tenderly; She had no clue their daughter was dead.
Vegeta flew faster to catch his son, who was flying away from the hospital at top speed.
"Trunks!" Vegeta screamed.
"Leave me alone!" The new father yelled in return. Vegeta rolled his eyes.
They were passing a large lake and through some trees. Trunks purposely hovered through the small wooded area, making no effort to dodge the hits of the trees' limbs, allowing them to mutilate him. There was no pain that he could inflict to himself that would take away the torment of losing Pan. He made no secret of his uncontrollable crying. Trunks landed near several rock formations, more blood spilling from his wounds as he punched the rocks in anger, screaming each time he hit the earth. He turned super saiyan and ripped the suit jacket and button-down shirt off of his body with one large shred. He punched the ground repeatedly, tears spilling from his eyes. Vegeta landed, watching his son. This is awkward.
"Trunks… listen to me!" Vegeta yelled. "Literally beating yourself up will not bring her back!"
"I killed her, father!" The warrior shouted helplessly. "I killed her." He punched the ground with a loud growl erupting from his throat; his hit was with such force, he created a large crater into the earth. Vegeta jumped to avoid the impact. The saiyan prince watched Trunks scream again; He scoffed. Slowly, the elder's brain began to work; He recalled the saiyan bond that always occurred on his home planet.
The bond between two saiyan warriors was unbreakable under every cost. Once they mated, they would be bound together for life. If one of them would die unexpectedly, the other would typically grieve themselves to death, if not, commit suicide. He had seen this occur thousands of times, due to typical childbirth procedures on his planet. Once the impregnated woman would be exposed to the moon's light, her body would be ripped and mutilated to bloody shreds, and the newborn would be there to wreak havoc on their planet. Once the father would discover the smell of the mother's slain blood, he would be sent into a rampage until he, too, would die. Trunks would be no exception.
After the lavender-haired warrior collapsed on his hands and knees to sob uncontrollably, Vegeta walked to him from behind. He kneeled towards his son, placing a hand on his back. "Trunks… I'm sorry." His voice was quiet and sober.
The warrior looked up and sniffled. Vegeta held up a hand and swung as hard as he could towards Trunks's neck. The yellow aura around Trunks disappeared as he tumbled onto his back, unconscious.
"Sorry I had to knock you out to protect you from killing yourself." Hmm. How contradicting, he thought.
"Where am I?" Pan asked, noticing that she was wearing her normal clothes and that she was in perfect health. " Where's my baby?!" She turned around, looking every direction. "Trunks?! Bulma?! Vegeta!?"
She stood in a large room that appeared to be some sort of an office. She looked in front of her and noticed a giant, magenta-skinned man, who had a burly beard and long, black hair. He appeared calm as he was flipping through a book. She had never seen someone so huge in her life; her face paled as she backed away slowly.
"Hey, Pan!" She heard a familiar voice from behind her. She turned around and saw Goku, smiling from ear to ear.
"Grandpa!" She wrapped her arms around him then began to cry. "I didn't make it, did I?"
Goku's eyebrows lowered. "I'm sorry, Pan…"
"No!" She cried. "My baby needs me! My baby… is my baby okay!?"
"Your daughter is fine," Goku announced proudly, grinning, rubbing the back of his head. "She's beautiful… she looks like you. I'm a great grandpa… I feel so old."
"Daughter…" her voice trailed off. "I have a daughter… Grandpa, PLEASE… I must get back to Earth!"
"I don't know if there's anything I can do," Goku shook his head helplessly.
"I'm too young to die!" She shook his arm violently. "My baby... Trunks... Please!"
Goku's eyes fixed on King Yemma. "King…?"
King Yemma looked down at the desk. "I'm sorry…"
"Please, King!" Pan begged the giant. "I just had a baby! I need to be in her life! I need to be by Trunks's side to raise her! I can't be dead! Please help!"
"Yemma, this is my granddaughter, Pan… please spare her. Just this once."
"I don't think I can... Your physical body is too weak for you to live."
"How?" Pan demanded.
King Yemma flipped through his book quickly, humming in concentration. His eyes squinted while reading. "You suffered from… quite a lot: Sudden cardiac arrest, severe blood loss due to placental detachment, and multiple fractures to your ribs, and near fracture to your hip-"
Pan wailed in Goku's arms.
"King Yemma… I was granted life once more to fight Vegeta and Nappa on Earth. I had a hole blown through my chest. This is only Pan's first time dying."
The giant looked at Pan, his features softening in sadness. "Goku, I—"
"It's not that I don't want to spend time with my granddaughter… I love her very much. But her time on earth is not done yet. Her life is just beginning."
"I'll do whatever it takes!" Pan sniffled. "I will suffer from the unbearable pain. I don't care. I just want to live and be with my family. I will do whatever you want when it really is time for me to die. I'll become your servant, or assistant or something."
King Yemma stared at the desperate, young woman. "Pan…"
Vegeta picked up his bruised and broken son and proceeded to fly back to the hospital. This would only be a temporary fix; he was unsure how to keep Trunks from destroying himself once he becomes conscious again. He sighed hopelessly. When he arrived at the hospital, he suddenly stopped, gasping. He felt a very weak life force inside the hospital, about a mile northeast of his location. He felt several, but he closed in on one specific life. He flew closer to this aura and hovered outside a specific window.
Pan was alive, but she was barely hanging on.
He looked at the body over his shoulder and flew over to the emergency room. The nurses were stunned at how he landed from the sky and walked in casually. When they saw the broken man, they rushed to get a gurney. Vegeta tossed his body on the hospital bed with a thud. "We were here once before, now it's for daddy." He strode off to the nursery, leaving the hospital staff dumbfounded.
Vegeta flew up the stairs (nobody had time for elevators) and entered the labor and delivery waiting room. He entered through the double doors.
"Oh, Vegeta, she's so beautiful," Bulma smiled. "Wait a minute, where have you been?"
"I had to protect Trunks from himself," he stuck his chin in the air.
She said nothing as she raised her eyebrows in confusion. Vegeta's faced hovered to Gohan's ear. "Pan lives."
Gohan's face shot to Vegeta, who nodded. "She is…?" Gohan trailed off.
Doctor Gobri appeared down the hallway, walking towards the family. Bulma turned to her, smiling. "Thank you. I knew you would not let us down."
"It was a fight, that's for sure," Doctor Gobri replied soberly. This caught the group's attention as she continued. "You're lucky you did not get here any later with her, or there would have been no saving her. She and the baby suffered from a sudden placental abruption. She has several broken ribs due to the baby's strength. She's going to be in a lot of pain when she wakes up." The doctor looked down. "She went into sudden cardiac arrest on the operating table. We were successful in bringing her back to life after several tries. It is nothing short of a miracle… I had never seen anything like this. We are currently giving her regular blood transfusions until her numbers go back up."
"My daughter died!?" Videl yelled.
"Honey, she's alive," Gohan held her as she began to cry.
Bulma's once-happy features had fallen from her face. "Is she going to be okay…?"
"Yes, I'm almost sure she will make a full recovery. We currently have her in the intensive care unit."
"Thank you, Doctor Gobri," the heiress nodded, hugging the doctor.
"Thank you, Bulma. Pan's information will be available at the nurse's desk." She smiled then walked away.
Pan had awakened four days later. She moaned, her hands rushing to her bandaged ribs; she felt as though it was hard to breathe. Trunks lifted his head at her sound and stood. "She's awake!" He pressed a button on the side of her hospital bed. The mother opened her eyes slowly at his voice. "Trruuunnnn…?""Pan! Thank Kami you are alive!" He smiled happily. "How are you feeling?"
"Mmmmm…. I feel like shit…" she moaned. "My ribs are killing me and my gut aches."
He ran his fingers through her hair affectionately. "Oh, Pan… I thought you were gone."
"Grandpa helped me return to Earth," she mustered a weak smile, her voice groggy.
"Goku? You saw Goku?"
She nodded. "He helped me persuade King Yemma to bring me back to life… I was never more scared in my life."
Trunks shook his head and lifted his face to the ceiling. "Thank you, Goku…"
Pan smiled, noticing the oxygen mask on her face. "How's the baby?"
"She is so beautiful…" Trunks smile was heartwarming. "She is incredible. She's always calm when I'm around…"
"Did you name her?"
"I wanted to wait on you…" His voice faded.
"I love you…" She held out her hand, which was attached to an IV, to take his.
"I love you, Pan." He shook his head.
"What can I do for you, Mr. Brief—Oh! Pan's awake! That's wonderful! How are you feeling?" A nurse walked in, surprised.
"Well, I'm having a little bit of a hard time breathing… and my ribs hurt," Pan replied.
"All right… that's due to the fractures.. seven out of twelve are broken."
"Seven?" Her eyes widened.
"Yes," the nurse said as she pushed a few buttons on the machine. "All right, I raised your oxygen, that should help some… now let's check your vitals and I will administer some more pain medication."
She pushed more buttons, and the surprise blood pressure cuff around her arm tightened. The machine beeped twice. "Your blood pressure looks a lot better. Oxygen levels are still a little low."
"Thank goodness," Pan smiled.
"Are you ready to meet your baby?" The nurse smiled. "Your family members have been spoiling her already. We kept her here for you."
"Yes!" Pan attempted to shout.
"All right, I will go get her!" the nurse smiled as she left the room. Trunks smiled excitedly; he had only dreamed of this moment. He watched Pan smile from ear to ear, experiencing the same excitement. Before she knew it, she wheeled in a crib and what appeared to be a bundle of blankets. She picked up the baby. "Would you like to try to hold her?"
"Please," she begged.
"All right," she gently placed the bundle in Pan's waiting arms. She tightened her jaws from the pain of her ribs, but was in awe at the baby's beautiful face. Goku was right; she resembled her a great deal. She removed her knitted hat and revealed a thick mess of dark purple hair. "Oh my goodness… she's so beautiful."
Trunks wiped a tear away. "She is."
The baby quietly cooed as she opened her eyes, revealing two pools of blue. Pan's jaw dropped. "Oh my… Hi. I'm your mommy," she said gently.
She made little faces at Pan, as though she approved of her mother. Trunks smiled, wiping away another tear.
"We've really been through it, haven't we?" Pan talked to the baby. "You're worth it…" The baby nuzzled against Pan, who blinked in surprise.
"She does that," Trunks announced. "I told you she was amazing."
"What should we name her?" Pan asked.
"Hmmm…" Trunks stared about her. "How about something short…"
"Yeah, something short and easy to pronounce…" Pan nodded in agreement.
"She looks like a Rin."
"Rin?" Pan looked at the baby's face. "She does… Rin. I love it."
Trunks kissed her forehead. "That was easy."
Pan attempted to fight back a giggle. "Please don't make me laugh."
