Chapter nine;
Breakfast and misunderstandings
Wufei moaned unconsciously and snuggled closer to that warmth he was enclosed in. It felt nice, not waking up as cold as he usually did. Not as early too.
So when that same warmth hugged him back he wasn’t prepared at all.
His dark eyes flung open and he tried to pull away from whoever it was holding him in place, but who ever it was wouldn’t let him move away. Not even an inch.
His breath hitched, he-
“Don’t move around so much or you’ll only aggravate your injuries further.” A voice murmured lovingly, close to his ear.
Marquise?!
He tensed, something was wrong.
Zechs would never hug him like this, nor would he let him lay cuddle at his side! And why was he speaking with so much care in his usually raspy voice, filled with hate and detest just for him?!
“Wufei?” The tall blond said and gave the small Chinese another hug.
Wufei’s body tensed even more and he tried to move away again, but the arms that were holding him didn’t even bulge. He couldn’t understand why he was being held by Zechs, or why the other hadn’t thrown his weight off him yet! The blond man hadn’t even shared one of his many condescending thoughts about him so far!
Once again he tried to push himself away from Zechs, but this time it just ended with him being pulled even closer to that strong body.
“You up for breakfast yet?” The blond man asked in a yawn before he finally let the young Chinese go with a last reassuring hug.
Wufei frowned, why was that man being so nice?
The tall blond smiled and leaned his head down to give the dark haired youth a small kiss over his forehead.
“I know I am.” He said and moved off the bed,
Wufei was still in a light state of shock after that small gesture that he didn’t notice Zechs weight slip off the mattress until he heard the rustle of clothes.
“Chang?”
The boy blinked before he shook his head and pulled the covers off his body.
Cold air rushed to meet him at once and he automatically moved his hand to adjust the opening of his shirt, only to find himself without one.
Panic grabbed at him.
Why was he missing a shirt?!
... Why was Zechs so nice to him?!
“Wufei?” The blond man asked again, noticing the terror written openly over the boy’s face.
The young Chinese moved his hand over his chest. He was cold and now very unsure of his own memory.
He knew that he had gotten that bottle smashed against the back of his skull in that alley, but the.. Dr Grant had assured him that he wasn’t going to have blackouts or lose parts of him memory!
“Chang?” A hand squeezed his shoulder gently, bringing him back from his thoughts. “Wufei, is something wrong?”
He wanted to answer, he really wanted to scream at the man, but the words couldn’t find their way to his mouth and he ended up with his bottom lip trembling in despair over something that hadn’t occurred.
He battled away Zechs’s touch and moved to sit up.
Maybe it was just his own memory playing tricks on him because he didn’t want Zechs to be the one that had to take care of him. Or maybe it was because it had been too warm to sleep in all that clothing, he had taken his shirt off in his sleep before, hadn’t he?
But then again, why would the tall blond be so nice to him?!
He was just about to stand when he felt an arm sneak around his waist. He couldn’t help it, but he tensed up immediately, again.
“Chang..” Zechs’s voice muttered. “Don’t even think about starting a fight here! You know that you wont be able to walk all the way over to the kitchen on your own! You couldn’t even make it to the bathroom the other day, do I really need to remind you of that?”
Wufei shook his head and pushed at Zechs’s chest. He didn’t need the blond to carry him, he rather just skip eating.
But eating hadn’t been the reason he had moved out of bed for.. He wanted to be sure that he was the one who had taken off that shirt, and not Zechs.
“Don’t be foolish,”
“Shaa..shii..” He frowned. He hated this. It wasn’t that hard to say the words! Was it?! Then why couldn’t he?!
“What?”
Wufei sat down on the bed again and patted his chest, hoping that the other man would understand.
And he did seem to understand.
“You’re cold?”
Well, maybe he hadn’t quite understood... But Wufei nodded, angrily anyway.
He heard a sigh escape Zechs before he let go of the hold he still had around Wufei’s waist. A drawer opened and closed quickly and then a garment was placed in his lap.
Wufei didn’t hesitate to put it on, even if he could tell right away that that piece of clothing didn’t belong to him.
It was a red tee-shirt, and while it fitted Zechs’s body like a second skin it hung loosely around his, showing more skin from his shoulders then he usually would approve of.
Wufei frowned. This tee-shirt belonged to Zechs, not to him. So why did he gave it to him?
“It fit’s you.”
He looked up. It fit’s you? No it didn’t. Only women wore their partner’s shirts, clothes that were too big for them. And he did definitely not belong to Zechs!
“Ah, come on. Let’s get something to eat.” The man said and lifted Wufei from the bed, and of course, Wufei wouldn’t let him do so without fighting again.
“Chang!” The man muttered again, clearly irritated. “I will not go and prepare breakfast and then sit and wait for you to get your ass down on the chair, without breaking anything on the way!”
Wufei growled as good as he could. It was true that he was very surprised to find himself cuddled to the man when he woke up, and when he had realized that Zechs hadn’t even thought of killing him for doing so he had doubted his hatred for the blond man. And when he had kissed his forehead? He had thought that he was dreaming, but now? Now he wasn’t sure any of the events so far had been real.
Zechs really was a bastard, inside out.
Yesterday had proved it too. Yesterday he had learned that not only was the blond man a bastard at heart, he was also a pervert. Making him forget to keep his guard up and taking advantages of every second of it!
But Zechs didn’t carry him as Wufei had thought. As soon as he had moved them both away from the bed he let Wufei’s feet land softly on the carpet in his bedroom.
Wufei grunted and pulled at Zechs arm, but the man didn’t give him a chance to disconnect himself from him. The blond man had taken a step forward, and because of the hold he had on the other, Wufei was forced to do the same, if he didn’t want to fall on his nose that was. He didn’t fall, but his legs were already cramping and he just ended up stumbling against the other man’s body.
Just when he had found his balance again Zechs took another step towards the kitchen, once again forcing the young Chinese to follow by his side or fall, hard.
Wufei stumbled again and was forced to grip at Zechs’s body to stay up straight.
He really, really hated the man!
... But at least he didn’t have to endure the humiliation of being carried around as a weakling.
Less then fifteen minutes later Wufei sat down in one of the chairs, a very comfortable one in his opinion after working his legs a bit too much too soon, but he would never tell Zechs that he would have liked to take a pause between steps. And the option of being carried never even dared to cross his mind. Being able to make it all the way from the bedroom without falling or have the blond laugh at his poor attempt at walking was worth the tough workout alone.
Even if Dr Grant had strongly advised him otherwise.
“Well, because I can’t read minds I guess that I have to guess what you’d like for breakfast today.” Zechs said with a smile as he searched through his refrigerator. Sally had rearranged every single content in it, and not to mention everything she had made them eat , which reminded him that he had to go shopping sometime soon.
“Hmm, I think I’ll have some toast and maybe some scrambled eggs. Do you want that too? Or just the toast?” He added when the boy shook his head.
Toast without scrambled eggs sounded fine to Wufei so he nodded sleepy, exhausted after his walk and he was still trying to get his foggy mind straight. He would have sorted everything out already if he hadn’t been so concentrated on moving his legs, and when he had all his attention on his legs he couldn’t really play puzzle with his brain.
“Anything else?” The blond asked placing a pan over the stove.
Wufei shook his head, just toast. Maybe some orange juice if he could get his hands on it would do perfect. He just hoped that the blond had some in that refrigerator of his.
“Okay, and what do you want to drink? Milk?”
Wufei shook his head, he hated milk and everything else made out of it.
“Hm, how about some coffee then?”
He shook his head more firmly. He really didn’t want to have coffee. It might smell divine but he couldn’t for the life of him understand the taste of it, or how people could drink it without throwing it all up again.
“Tea? I don’t have a lot of it, but..”
Wufei considered it for a short while, but he really wanted some juice, orange if possible, and he didn’t think that Zechs would have any tea he actually liked.
“Not tea?” Zechs asked a little bewildered. “Hmm, I think that I might have some orange juice left.”
Yes, please. Wufei nodded sleepy, it was getting harder by the second to keep his eyes opened.
“Toast and a glass of juice it is then!” He said with a smile. “Are you sure you don’t want some bacon or scrambled eggs with that?”
No, Wufei was more then happy with what he was getting already.
“I think I have some ice-cream in the cooler,” The blond man thought aloud.
Wufei raised his head from its way down to the table, had the blond man really considered ice-cream for breakfast?!
“Oh, you’d like that too, don’t you?” He laughed. “Me too, just promise me that you wont tell Sally or she will be over here with an extra bed in no time.”
Wufei smiled too, if they knew Sally as good as they thought they did that was exactly what she would do if she found out that Zechs was giving him sweets for breakfast.
Why are you so nice to me?
He frowned, he really couldn’t remember anything he had done to make the blond in such a good mode this morning... It couldn’t just be because he had, because he...
My clothes...
A small hint of fear rushed over his face.
“Sally said that you liked your bread buttered with jam, right?”
Wufei nodded absently. He was still trying to remember when, and to be more exact why he had taken his shirt off during the night. Maybe even more so why he was cuddled to Zechs when he woke.
Zechs stopped and looked down at the boy who held one hand over his shoulder in a weak attempt to stop that wide opening from showing off his tanned skin. The blond man’s eyes rested over the youth’s confused expression for a long time.
It wasn’t so hard to understand that confusion. Zechs’s little china doll had gone to bed with his clothes on and waken to find a piece missing.
The hands that had started to preparing Wufei’s already toasted bread stopped in its movements. He owed the boy some kind of explanation. It was after all he who had removed that garment from the youth’s body because he wanted to feel the dark haired beauty’s heart beating, to have his body’s heat resting against his.
But he couldn’t really tell Wufei that. The nightmare, yes, but why he lost his clothes? Absolutely not. That would only give him a one-way ticket to hell...
He glued his eyes to the work in front of his hands, preparing breakfast, and with a sigh he opened his mouth to try and calm the boy’s fears.
“You had a nightmare, a bad one.” He started. “And when I tried to calm you, you panicked and tried to move away from me.” He paused to look at the boy. He had his brows pressed slightly together and his mouth was opened just as little, like he didn’t want to believe the blond man, but still swallowing every word that left his tongue.
“But then all of a sudden you decided that I wasn’t your enemy and flung yourself into my arms.” He continued without changing his tone. “I took your shirt off because it was already on its way to, and you wouldn’t let me pull it back down so you gave me no choice but to.”
The dark haired boy looked skeptically at what he was saying. It wasn’t the truth, but it was as close to it as it could be.
“I didn’t take advantage of you, and if I had you would feel the traces of it.” Zechs said seriously, knowing that that had been the burning question that had laid in the boy’s mind.
That too was as close to the truth as he dared to tell. He hadn’t really taken advantage of the youth, but he had removed that shirt to be able to caress his sides and chest while they laid close, while the young Chinese was still deep enough in sleep.
And Wufei had liked it.
