Chapter 11

Heero stomped down the hall way to the room where Hilde and Duo were . He put his hand on the knob and pushed his card key along the lock. It clicked open and he pushed it wide. He could see the couple sleeping on the bed. He was a little surprised, considering what a ladies man Duo pretended to be. He smiled slightly, knowing what this was. He closed the door , allowing the darkness to cover him. He moved quietly to the bed and reached out. His hand was stopped by another’s .
“Leave him alone,” the voice hissed.
“Hilde.” Heero whispered. “I want to talk to you.”
“What about?” She asked as she moved from the bed.
He could hear her fumbling around in the darkness, Then she clicked on the desk light.
“What are you two doing?”
She frowned. “What did Une tell you?”
“Nothing.”
She frowned.
“We think there is a senator behind these attacks on the preventers.” She sighed as she held up the files. “We’re trying to prove it. His daughter is here in the base as a cadet.”
“And what have you got?”
She looked at the files, “Nothing. It seems the warehouse we broke into was a legit business. At least on paper.” She sighed as she flipped through the folder on the dresser.
Heero frowned. “Do you think he’s holding meetings there?”
She nodded, then opened her mouth to say something, when Duo’s voice called out.” What’s going on, Hilde?” Pause. “Heero?” There was a question in his tone. “What are you doing here?”
He asked as he slipped out of the bed in just his boxers. She saw him shiver and pull the blanket around him.
Heero frowned at the dark marks on his skin. “What happened?”
“Got beat up. Hilde rescued me.” He said as he smiand and winked at her. “Ow.”
He paused as he stood, pulling the blanket around him further. “She was awesome, Heero! What she can do with a crowbar!” He laughed. “I bet those guys have headaches for a week….. Or maybe you killed them.”
Hilde shrugged, “I don’t think I hit either one that hard, but I don’t know.”
Heero glanced over at the girl who was blushing in the yellow light.
“Do you want me to help you?”
Duo and Hilde looked at each other , then back to Heero.
“What’s in it for you, Heero?”
“Nothing.”
Hilde looked at him cautiously. “ I don’t believe you.” She said, harshly. “Just a few hours ago you were telling me Duo was a baka. You want in on this because it will make you look good, too.”
Heero’s face faulted slightly, at her accusation. He frowned. This girl was as untrusting as he was. He gathered his composure and glared at her. “No.”
“Yeah right.” Duo replied looking at him.
Heero shook his head, “No. I want to help. You can keep the mission. I don’t think Relena would forgive me if I let her friends get killed if I knew I could help.”
Duo cocked and eyebrow. ”Is there something going on between you two?”
He shook his head. “No.”
Hilde knew it was time to change the subject by the look on Heero’s face. “You know, Heero , there is something you could do. You are a better hacker than me….. Maybe you could hack into the data base and find out anything that could be used. I’m a good hacker but you are the best.”
“Hilde.” Duo cautioned.
“Hey, we could use the help and you and I can do the ground work while Heero does the tech work.” She looked at the battered Duo. “Like you need to be running around getting beat up again. Heero can get us information so we don’t go around on a wild goose chase again.” She looked over at Heero. “Do you agree?”
“Hn.” Was his only answer.
“Good.” She handed him the file and said. “Here. You can look at it. I glanced at it and I found nothing but maybe you can find what I missed. And your name will be on the report when we file it.”
He reached out and took the file, looking over at Hilde, then Duo. ”I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”
As soon as the door closed, Duo hissed at Hilde, “Why did you give him the files? This is our mission.”
“Yeah, but Duo, I need the help, you and I can’t hack into the database and snoop around and you know it! We honestly don’t have time to do it! And Heero can be trusted , can’t he?”
Duo grunted, “Yeah, I guess so.”
“Ok, Come on trust me on this! Remember I hot wired a motorcycle and beaned two guys…..”
Duo chuckled, “Yeah.. That’s my girl.” He pulled her into a tight embrace, and held her close. “Let’s go back to bed, huh?”

~~~~~
Hilde waited a few minutes until Duo was sleeping once more then slipped from the bed. She shivered as she crossed the floor to the computer on the desk. She sat down and logged in. There was something she had to find out. She typed in her email address and waited to see what came to her. She smiled slyly as she saw one o f the mails. She knew now what she had suspected. Megan was what she thought. She had emailed her and issued a challenge. She knew she shouldn’t have but this girl would became a thorn in her side if she didn’t stop her. The arrogant girl took the bait, hook, line and sinker. When Une had confined her to her room she had given her a note, telling her to use any means possible to get to the bottom of this.. Officially Une could do nothing , But Hilde being a civilian could do things that others could not.
Hilde Smiled as she read the email. She glanced over at the sleeping boy in her bed. How could she keep him out of this. She wanted to do this without him getting hurt again. He was reckless and would do what ever was necessary to protect her. She loved that part of him but it could also be rather annoying , too. She could handle herself quite well enough. She had hoped the incident in the warehouse would have proved that to him but she was afraid it didn’t at all. After she emailed Megan back she closed her email and typed in a code word she had put in earlier. All the information she had given Heero came up in an instant. She smiled then began to reread it. There had to be something she missed.
She stared at the screen with bleary eyes, reading the words over and over again. She had read it several times and still couldn’t see what she was missing. She rubbed her hands over her eyes and leaned back. She could her Duo’s soft breathing in the back ground and wondered why she just didn’t give up and sleep too. She turned to look in that direction but jumped at a sharp rap of knuckles on her door. She heard the card key slip through and the door opened . She blinked as two figures came into the room. She recognized Sally right away , then realized the other person was Wu Fei.
“Hilde.” Sally said, softly, “How’s the patient?”
She nodded toward the bed, “Sleeping.”
Sally smiled as walked over to the bed. She gazed down at the boy under the blankets.
Hilde frowned, wondering why WuFei was with Sally. Sally grinned and turned back to the girl at the desk. “I bet you’re wondering why Wu Is here.”
Hilde looked at Sally and then WuFei. “Well, I was wondering.”
“He has something to tell you.”
Hilde looked at WuFei and waited. He reached inside his pocket and pulled out a disk. He walked over to her and placed it in her hand.
“We received this transmission just before Maxwell went off on his own half cocked. We believe this is the reason he went out on his own in our last battle*. I hope you can make heads or tails of it.”
She looked at the disk and turned back to computer. Sally didn’t look at them just continued her examination of the sleeping Duo. “Boy, nothing wakes this kid, Hey , Hilde?”
Hilde snorted, and pushed in the disk, “No,…. well maybe the mention of food.”e ce computer whirred as it opened the disk. What came up shocked Hilde.
“Oh, I see why he went off on his own.”
WuFei stepped closer. “Why.”
“This is German, WuFei. It was directed to Duo. It says they had me.”
Sally nodded. “That would explain why Duo went off half cocked.”
Wu Fei’s expression changed from shock to anger. “ These are foul creatures we are dealing with.”
Hilde nodded and spoke softly. “That’s why we have to stop them.”
Duo stirred and opened his eyes, looking groggily at everyone. “Sally?” He moved, then groaned. “I think I slept too long.” His hand reaching for his ribs.
Sally chuckled and pushed him back down. “No, go back to sleep. You need to rest. The only way you will heal is to sleep. You push too hard, Duo.”
“But… Sally…”
“No buts, I’m your doctor and I say rest.”
Duo looked pleadingly over to Hilde who shook her head. “ I agree with Sally, Duo. You need to rest.”
He looked over at WuFei, who put his hands on his hips and glared.
Duo dropped back down on the pillow with a soft groan. “I am totally out numbered.” He sighed. “Ok, I’ll go back to sleep.” He rolled over and faced the wall.
Sally winked ,then grabbed Wu Fei’s arm. “Come on, Wu Fei, We’re done here.” She turned to Hilde and smiled. “Ill talk to you tomorrow.”
Hilde nodded as they went out the door. She walked over to the bed and slipped in, wrapping her arms around Duo’s chest very gently, so she wouldn’t hurt him.
He tried to move away from her but she held him tight.
“Are you angry?” She whispered, hurt creeping into her voice.
He sighed, “No.” One of his hands grasped hers and squeezed hers. He rolled over and pulled her close to him. “I know your right, but you all didn’t have to gang up on me.”
She giggled, “Yes, we did.”
He kissed her, “ Ow. I love you, Hil.”
“ Baka boy! I love you, too, Duo.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Heero moved quickly down the hall, passing Sally and WuFei. He nodded as he passed them. He didn’t ask where they were going but instinctively knew. He walked past the common computer room and continued to walk. He went to the men’s barracks and retrieved his lap top. He moved quietly through the huge room, moving quietly so he wouldn’t disturb the sleeping men. He stepped back into the bright hallway and continued down to walk. He knew where he was headed, he just hoped she wouldn’t tell him to get lost.
Heero reached her door and tapped gently. He knew she would be awake, at least he hoped she was. He heard her soft voice as she opened the door. Her eyes shot open as she grasped the front of her robe.
“Can I come in?”
She nodded and stepped back, allowing him into the room.
“What do you need, Heero?”
“A few minutes of quiet.” He replied.
“Oh.” She whispered as she stepped back and watched him set his lap top up. She moved over to her bed and sat down, saying nothing. Heero frowned, then he turned toward the girl. She was looking at the floor saying nothing.
“Relena.”
She looked up, Her face still.
“I didn’t mean you.” He said, looking into her blue eyes. His head tilted toward tdoordoor and then she understood. She stood and came over to him, standing by him. He moved slightly on the chair allowing her to sit beside him.
Relena looked at him as he moved over, and allowed her room to sit. She frowned and looked at him. “This may take a while and you need to see this too.”
She shook her head, smiling slightly. She should have known. “So, How is Duo? Hilde?”
“Hn.”
“I assume that means they are ok?”
“Duo has a couple of cracked ribs and plenty of bruises. He’ll be ok.”
“Hilde?”
“She’s fine, seems I underestimated her.”
“Oh?”
Heero nodded. Relena didn’t want to stop him. He barely ever talked.
“Yes, it seems she can handle herself quite well.” he paused , then said, “But she is like Duo, reckless.”
“Really? Perhaps, I should talk to my friend in the daylight.”
Heero nodded and began to type. He taped in the information Hilde had given him.
“Oh, that’s the manifesto Hilde gave to me.”
He nodded as he continued to type.
“They allowed you to help?”
He nodded again.
“Good.”
Heero cocked an eyebrow at her and said nothing. She said nothing and watched the screen.
“Why are you going over this with me?”
He continued to type, changing letters and rearranging words. “Two pairs of eyes are better than one.” He paused , before continuing. “You have read it all the way through?”
“Yes. It’s babble. There must be a hidden meaning in there some where.”
“Yes.” Came his reply. “My thoughts exactly.”
The hours slipped by but neither one noticed.
Heero jumped when Relena’s head connected with his shoulder. He glanced over at the sleeping girl and smiled slightly. It wouldn’t do for her to see his expression right now. He shifted and her head came up.
“Oh, I’m sorry, Heero! Did I fall asleep?”
He nodded. “It’s late.” He stood pulling her to her feet with him and lead her to her bed. She climbed in and pulled the covers up, then without a second thought she opened them back up. “Join me?”
He stepped back. “I had better not. What would your brother say?”
She nodded. “I guess so, but what if someone sees you leave? My reputation would be questionable, then, right?”
“I’ll be careful.”
“What if you’re not?”
She had a good point but he couldn’t stay. She did things to him he didn’t understand and he feared the feelings.”
“I will be.” He turned and left the room.
Relena flopped back down on the bnd nd sighed. She rolled over and pounded a fist into the pillow, then buried her face into it. “I give up.”

Megan clicked on her mail and read Hilde’s challenge. She smils ss she deleted it and stood. She moved over to her small dresser and opened the top drawer. She pulled out a box of clips and set them on top. She picked up her revolver and pulled the clip she she had been using for target practice.e wae wanted the gun full and ready when she faced Hilde. She loaded a bullet in the chamber and clicked on the safety. She didn’t want it off in case she was stopped and inspected. She slid it into her holster. Now all she had to do was wait until she met up with Hilde.

To be continued……………..
