It feels so good to get out! And to think I had to endure two more years in this hellhole. I guess there is some good from having a rotten past. My graduation ceremony is Saturday night. Surprisingly Jake came up to me and congratulated me on graduating early, but then told me that the whole school now knows that I’m with Quatre.

“Oh well,” I told him, “like I said before, I really don’t care.”

“Yeah, well,” he said, “I thought I’d warn you that you’re being talked about behind your back and it’s not pretty.” I was kind of skeptic.

“And you’re not into the conversation because…”

“Well I am, but I’m not.”

I gave him a confused look, “Explain.”

“It’s hard to. I guess you could say that I’m agreeing with some things to keep me from getting my ass kicked and I’m not saying anything or starting anything because I find it immature to be talking that way.”

I shrug. “Alright. Whatever.”

So, I’m home now, and I’m really looking forward to seeing Quatre. I just hope he’s willing to see me. He stayed home because; well yeah, he’s sick. I turn the engine off and wander up to the door. I still had my school uniform on and I proceeded to unbutton the top as I walked towards the stairs. Mrs. Winner was on the swinging porch.

“Welcome home, Duo.” She smiled, “How was your last day of school?”

“Fine.” I said. “Is Quatre sleeping?”

“No. He’s awake. He’s in the living room talking to his father.”

“Alright.” I nod. HIS father, not mine. The way I like it known. I enter the house, slipping off my uniform’s jacket. I could hear some talking in the other room as I proceeded closer to the stairs going up. I wanted to go into the living room so badly and let Quatre know that I was home, but there were a couple things that were stopping me.

First of all, Mr. Winner was in there, probably telling him something private. The other reason was because Quatre was still upset with me. Or so I think he is. I tried this morning to be with him, but he wanted to be left alone.

So, I just left for school without so much as a goodbye from him. It was weird leaving without him, or even leaving without getting a kiss from him. Well, I figured to just let him be so he could cool off. It was probably the flu talking.

I was half way up the stairs when I heard a shout and then some feet stomping. I looked down from the stairwell and saw Quatre storming out of the living room and toward the downstairs bathroom. He slammed the door and I heard it lock.

“Strange.” I raised an eyebrow, and then descended the stairs. I got to the door to the bathroom and was just about to knock.

“Duo.” A booming voice startled me from behind. I jumped a bit, and then turned around slowly. I gulped when I saw who it was.

“Uh… hello, Mr. Winner.” I grin cheekily.

“What are you doing?” he asked sternly.

“I want to check on Quatre and make sure he’s ok.”

“For real?” he asked.

“Yes, for real.” I don’t know what he’s getting at.

“So you’re done hurting him?” he crossed his arms.

“Hurting him??” my eyes widened a bit.

“Yes. Quatre told me everything…”

“I was only trying to help him!” I interrupted.

“I know about the way you tried to ‘help him’,” he quoted the last two words with that finger gesture. “And I’m not too fond with the way you’re treating him.”

“I was just trying to help him get better!” I started to defend myself. “I was trying to get him to take his medicine.”

“But you don’t understand, Duo. He doesn’t need ‘your’ help with getting better. He knows what he’s doing.” He turned away from me and then stopped. “There were many times that he had to fend for himself simply because both his mother and I have been too busy to take care of him. Ever since his mother got laid off of her work three years ago, he’s had to endure her kind and caring ways of doing things for him. He’s learned how to handle himself so well that he dismissed any kind of aid from anyone.”

I stayed put, listening with interest.

“So,” he went on, “when his mother tried to help him with something one day, he snapped and screamed at her. They had their very first fight that day. Once they finally patched things up, my wife stopped trying to do things for him and they got along once again.” Mr. Winner paused in his speech to look over at me. I gulped quietly, and stayed silent, letting him know that I’m willing to hear more. He sighed,

“Even that one day that Quatre got beaten up by some bullies he wouldn’t let us help him. He told us that he could handle things by himself. I’m very proud of my son for taking on his responsibilities on his own.”

“But,” I interject, “doesn’t ones shoulders get too heavy if one does everything for himself? I mean, wouldn’t he suddenly collapse one day from so much stress?”

Mr. Winner blinked in surprise, “Well, I guess that could happen. But you mustn’t worry so much about him. My son’s a very strong person. You wouldn’t know, though, by looking at him, would you?”

I shook my head, as I agreed with him, “You’re right, I misunderstood him.” I sighed and looked back at the bathroom door. “Is he gonna stay in there forever?”

“I hope not.” Mr. Winner began to walk back to the living room, “He’s got homework to catch up on.”

When Quatre didn’t emerge from the bathroom, I decided to go up to my room and wait. Besides that, I didn’t like standing around for so long.

From across my room, I heard Quatre’s door open and then shut. I peeked my head out from my room, making sure that no one was around, and tiptoed over to the other bedroom door. I rapped my knuckles on it enough for only the occupant to hear and not the whole household.

“Go away!” I heard, and then something hit the other side of the door. I knocked again, this time a little louder. “I said, go away!” Quatre yelled.

“I wish to ask you something.” I said through the door.

“I don’t care! Leave me alone.”

“I want to know if you’ll accompany me on a walk.”

No answer. I cleared my throat and tried again,

“Quatre? Could I interest you in a romantic stroll in the park?” I waited. I was about to give up and go back to my room, when his door opened a crack. Two big, round, beautiful aqua eyes stared at me with deep sorrow.

I came closer, so close that I was taking up the whole space of the crack in the door with a part of my face peeking in. I gave him the most sincere look, and then protruded my bottom lip out and fluttered my eyelashes. Quatre sighed,

“What is it, Duo?”

“Didn’t you hear my offer?” I pouted.

“Yes, I heard. Should I believe you?”

I sighed in frustration, “Of course.” I stuck my hand through the door’s crack. “Come walk with me? The stars are about to come out; we can watch the sun set. I’ll hold you tightly under a big oak tree, and we’ll snuggle as we watch the reds and oranges and yellows of the sky. I can compare you to those very same colors, and let you know that you’re more beautiful than anything Mother Nature could paint…”

Quatre’s face was bright crimson and there was a small droplet on the corner of his eye. He started to wipe away at it as I continued,

“I’ll kiss your soft lips and taste your creamy skin, and then lay you down in the grass and watch as the wind blows your hair all around, making you even more magnificent than ever…”

“Oh, Duo…” he finally took my offered hand, “That sounds so wonderful!” he looked away shyly, “You’re such a sweet talker! But are you positive about…”

“Oh yes, love! I’ve never been more sincere! I wish to make it up to you and show you that I meant no harm. I was only concern for your health because of how much I love you.”

“Oh, Duo!” he yanked the door open the rest of the way and wrapped his arms around my neck. He reached up and caught me by surprise as his lips found mine. I put my arms around his waist and pulled him closer as I kissed him back. It felt so good to touch him again. And am I ever so glad that he was feeling much better than before.

The kiss ended all too soon, and we stood there with our arms around each other, gazing into one another’s eyes. He looked as if he was searching my face for any signs of… something. Deceitfulness perhaps? I gave him a real smile.

“Shall we be off, my luminous lover?”

Cheeks tinted, Quatre nodded.
