Disclaimer: I don’t own Gundam Wing. Nor am I making money from publishing this! It’s purely for fun. I do, however, own Lea Zikamo and all the other original characters. Enough said. |
A party was held that night for all in the fair’s food court. Dancing, music and merriment was had by all who attended. Well… that is, all but Heero. He sat at a bench and table combo with Lea to his right and Relena on his left. Both were talking happily about the day’s events and how giddy they were for the win. Heero could only think about Janis. Even though the doctor was a cleared operative and the location was safe, he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was going to go wrong.
Trowa cleared his throat and cast a raised eyebrow to Heero. He was all for telling Lea the truth after he had heard what had occurred while Heero was gone. Quatre seconded the motion, stating it would be best for him to have it out in the open. Heero agreed with them but didn’t know how to break the news to her. This required a little more sympathy than he was use to giving. Pramjeet, who was there when everything was explained because of her attachment to the car, had offered her assistance. Heero had refused. Presently, he wished he had accepted it.
Sensing Heero’s hesitation, Quatre said, “Is there a walking trail or something around here?” He patted his stomach. “I need to walk off some of this food!”
“Oh, good idea, Quatre,” Pramjeet chimed without a hint of it sounding rehearsed. “Come on, Trowa. You can use a little exercise yourself,” she teased, winking.
“I’m not getting that fat,” he defended playfully as he stood up. Truth was he wasn’t a bit fat. He still maintained his sleek, powerful physique. “Lea, Heero, would you like to join us?”
Heero shrugged, “Sure.” He helped Lea up and they followed everyone through the crowd and food stands to the trail through the forest. Heero was so deep into his plan of how to tell Lea that he didn’t notice Lea’s puzzled frown. She took his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “Sorry,” he snapped out of his trance. “Today’s been a long day.”
Lea smiled warmly, “It’s alright. Lots of people get nervous at times like that.” She added quickly when Heero shoot her a puzzled and hurt look, “It was what Trowa said when they interviewed him and Quatre. You weren’t there so…”
Heero rolled his eyes and groaned. ‘Of course he would have to say something! Couldn’t he have said anything but that?’ He rubbed the bridge of his nose. ‘I’m surprised that McCart and his band of half wits didn’t say anything.’
Lea patted his arm bringing him back to the conversation. “You’ve only one more day of this. Do you think you could handle that?”
She was being so sweet and comforting that Heero felt guilty. “I didn’t leave because I was nervous,” he blurted out.
His uneasiness was reflected in his slow, unsure steps. Heero shoved his hands in his pockets and kicked at the rocks on the path as he desperately searched for the right wording. Lea had refrained from asking any questions. She matched her steps with his, glancing at him now and then to see if she should be worried about what he was going to say.
“Uncle Janis told you he was leaving, right?” he asked slowly. Lea nodded. She kept her calm expression although worry was gathering in her eyes. “He didn’t leave.” The words were spoken so soft that she had to strain to hear them. “He’s been hurt… bad.”
“What!” Lea gasped and stopped walking. The memories of her father’s death flooded her mind. She stepped away from him when he reached for her. “Explain!” she demanded, hands balled up in fists.
Her anger was like a slap in the face. He winced as his stomach twisted. “We should continue walking. I don’t know who could be trying to listen.” Heero scanned around for a place to go when she wouldn’t move and spotted a bench surrounded by trees and bushes. “There,” he pointed to it, “Okay?” Lea marched straight for it with Heero close behind. He motioned for the others to continue their walk without them.
The moment Heero and Lea reached the bench, she whirled on him. “What the hell is going on?! Is this the reason why you’ve been gloomier than usual?” She folded her arms and gave him the best Death Glare he had seen anyone else do.
Her expression infuriated him. “No!” he snapped. “I’ve been trying to tell you without pissing you off! Do you think that finding Janis with a black eye and coughing up blood was fun for me?!” Heero suddenly wished life had a rewind button. Lea paled and backed away from him nearly tripping over the bench. He ran a shaky hand through his hair and said in a forcibly calm tone, “He’s safe. I’ve got him stashed away with a med agent watching him.”
Lea plopped onto the bench with a sigh of relief. “Wait a second,” her head snapped up. “Med agent?”
Heero’s stomach twisted even tighter. ‘Can’t back out now, soldier.’ “I used to work for the Preventers and Relena as her bodyguard.” Lea’s mouth dropped open. Heero continued quickly, “I used some old connections to get him some help. It’s gonna cost me later but I don’t give a damn right now. Whoever did this to him has got to pay.”
“How?” she asked after a few seconds of silence. There was a slight tremor to her as she fought the tears that were stinging her eyes. Anger mixed with fear was in her eyes when she looked at him. “How did Janis get hurt?”
“He was kidnapped from Rodecker’s booth at the stadium.” He knelt in front of her taking her hands into his. “Janis didn’t see who it was but we both think it was the men who murdered your father. They’re back and still after that key.”
Lea snapped her eyes shut and tried to turn away from him. The action ripped through Heero. He froze and watched the tears stream down her cheeks. His entire body felt like it hurt, especially his heart. He wanted to say something but nothing would come out. Instead, he sat down beside her looking just as defeated.
‘What are you doing?’ logic scolded. ‘Sitting here wallowing in self-pity isn’t going to help. Whoever it is has just declared war on you and your family! You are Heero Yuy, the Savior of Earth and the Colonies! Are you going to let one little slip up, which wasn’t your fault, get to you?’
‘Hell no!’ Heero glanced at Lea. She was wiping the tears from her face and eyeing him. Determination was gathering strength in her eyes. She flashed him a weak smile. The vice on his heart eased up some.
‘That’s the spirit, soldier! You know what to do. Get to it!’
“Sorry,” she mumbled as she was wiping the tears on her hands on her skirt. “It’s just a lot to take in.”
“Yes, it is.” Heero braced himself. “Do you want to hear the rest of it or would you like a little more time?”
“More?” Lea gulped. She sighed and patted his hand, “Go ahead. I’d rather have it all than some abridged version.”
Heero was taken aback by her blunt honesty but welcomed it. “If they were able to get to Janis, then they will know about me… about my past.” He paused to make sure his words were sinking in. “Lea, I was a Gundam pilot. I fought in the war. If they know that or that I was a Preventer, then they will come after me. I pose the biggest threat to them right now.” He held up his hand to keep her from speaking. She looked worried and he knew what she was about to say. “I’m not leaving. I just want you to be prepared. Things are going to get rough.”
Lea counted on her fingers. “Wait a sec,” she said slowly. “You would have been like… in your teens to fight in that war! I mean, I was only fourteen when all that went down.”
“I was fifteen.”
“Whoa!” Lea’s eyes widened. She waved her hands at Heero’s growing frown, “Yeah… I got it. With you on the scene and Janis knowing what he does, the simple life I’ve enjoyed is out the window. I understand,” she said, then added with a sullen laugh, “Well… there goes my plans.” Heero raised an eyebrow. Lea smiled sheepishly, “I had… some plans for tonight and now…” She shrugged, “The best laid plans of mice and men, huh? Just one thing. Don’t you ever keep me out of the loop or treat me like I’m some weak female. You do and I swear I’ll make your life a living hell!”
Heero tossed his head back and laughed. The joyful sound made Lea blush. “I promise,” he said wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
She curled her body closer to his. He could fell her trembling. “I’ve got to know something. Why did you become my caretaker? I must’ve bored you to death!”
“No,” he chuckled. “I was far from bored. I’ve enjoyed being with you. I wanted to forget my past… try something new. I’ve always fought someone else’s battles. I never made the battles mine or became too attached to them. It was just a mission I couldn’t fail. Living with you changed that. I know now that I can have a life! And… I want that life with you.” Lea buried her face into Heero’s chest, shoulders shaking. He held her, happy she wasn’t pushing him away again.
Lea’s arms snaked around him, “I must’ve been standing on a four leaf clover when I met you.” She looked up at him with a weak smile. Strength and determination mixed with fear and sadness were in her eyes. Heero bent to kiss her forehead but stopped. Just beyond the bushes and trees, a twig snapped. All his senses went on alert. He couldn’t see or hear where it came from. It was too dark and the fake moon and starlight wasn’t enough.
“We should go,” he suggested in a conversational tone.
Lea nodded, wiped the tears away, and stood, wincing. She gingerly rubbed her left pant leg. “Too much partying. I was jumping like crazy when Quatre won the Horse and Rider event.” Heero offered her his arm and she gladly accepted it. “I’m not gonna let this ruin my night,” she announced with a bright smile. “The night’s still young and we haven’t danced yet!”
Her enthusiasm stalled any protests forming in Heero’s head. Instead, he returned her smile with one of his own, “I’d be honored to.”

Alistair removed his hand from Brock’s mouth. “You worthless piece of shit,” he hissed under his breath. He peaked around the tree to check if Heero had heard Brock’s movement. His Prussian blues scanned the area but fixed on nothing. Alistair sighed. ‘That was too close.’
“We should go,” Heero said.
“Damn,” Alistair grumbled. ‘Of all the shitty luck!’ He pulled the earpiece to the microphone amplifier he was using to listen in on the conversation out of his ear. He waited until Heero and Lea was far from the clearing to grab Brock by the neck. “First,” he growled, “you fuck up retrieving Janis. Now, you nearly fuck this up. I hope the Boss lets me kill you.”
Alistair’s grip on Brock’s neck tightened as he talked. Brock was gasping for air while failing to remove Alistair’s hand. Disgusted with his flailing, Alistair tossed him aside. He turned his attention back to Heero and Lea. They were almost back to the food court chattering like nothing happened. ‘You’ve made a mistake, my dear Gundam pilot. Let’s see if you can think of it in enough time to do something about it.’ A sinister smile spread across his lips.
“The Boss wants to see you, now,” Brock managed to wheeze out. He was still sitting on the ground rubbing his neck. A large red hand mark was already appearing. “I ain’t the only one who fucked up.”
Alistair ignored him and headed for the parking lot. Several limos along with other high priced cars were parked in a special location near the entrance of the fair. They belonged to the most influential people attending the fair. Mayor Rodecker’s limo was among them. Alistair sauntered over to the limo. Inside were Rodecker, Damian and the Boss, who was sitting in the shadows as usual. All that could be seen was the outline of his long thin frame and the occasional twinkle of the jewels in his rings on his fingers.
“Sir,” he said to the Boss, bowing his head slightly.
“Ah, Alistair,” the Boss mewed. “Where’s my little coo-coo bird? You haven’t clipped his wings, have you?” On cue, Brock slid into the limo next to Rodecker. The Boss sighed and motioned to Brock’s neck, “What have I told you about playing with others?”
Alistair hung his head, suppressing the desire to defend himself. “Forgive me, Sir.”
The Boss waved a jeweled hand. “I hope you have better news for me.” Brock visibly stiffened in his seat.
“Sir, Yuy has been told about the Persephone Project and has relayed what he knows to the Zikamo woman.” Beside Alistair, Damian’s left eye twitched. “Janis has not left Mead. The disk he has can still be found.”
The Boss clapped his hands joyously. “Bravo, Alistair. I do believe you have redeemed yourself for botching the torture session.”
Alistair bowed in his seat, “Thank you, Sir, but there’s more.”
“Oh?” He laced his fingers and sat back in his chair. “Good or bad?”
“Bad… Sir…” Alistair admitted. He didn’t dare look up. The Boss never liked bad news. Mustering all the courage he had left, Alistair continued. “The Sandrock pilot, Quatre Rebarba Winner, and The Heavyarms pilot, Trowa Barton are also aware of the Persephone Project. As you know, Barton has been after Rodecker for not covering his ass with his dealings with you. Also, Relena Darlian Peacecraft Winner is here.”
Tension thickened in the limo. The sound of the Bosses fingers drumming against the armrest was all that was heard for a long time. No one spoke or moved. To do so would incur the Boss’ wrath.
“Three of the famous Gundam Pilots here in one spot?” No hint of anger could be found in the question. “And they bring the Prime Minister of Earth here?” A few minutes ticked by before the Boss said to Alistair, “You’ve done well. This new bit of information can be made into our favor. Continue your surveillance of Yuy. Report when he goes for Janis.” Alistair, who was grinning like a Cheshire cat, bowed his thanks and left the limo. “Sweet Damian…”
Damian bowed slightly, “Sir?” His hands were fists on his knees. The comment about Lea was till bugging him.
“Come, come, Sweet Damian,” the Boss soothed. “Are you still jealous of Yuy?” The flicker of anger in Damian’s eyes made him chuckle. “You will have your chance soon enough and she will be yours to play with once again. But first, Rodecker and Brock,” he mewed in a fatherly tone.
The two men straightened in their seats and bowed, “Yes, Sir?”
“Care to redeem yourselves, gentlemen?”

“I feel stupid, Heero,” Lea whispered in his ear. She was ridding on his back as he walked down the long path towards their camper. Her left leg had started to throb half way through their third slow dance. She rested at the table until it was time for the food court to close. When she stood up, pain shoot straight up her thigh. Heero offered to carry her all the way back to the camper. At first, Lea was all for the idea but the occasional glances from passer-bys were embarrassing her. “My leg feels much better now. And look! We’re not that far from the camper. I can walk the rest of the way.”
Heero chuckled, “Nope.” He liked the excuse for being so close to her in public. They still had their rolls to uphold. She was still his employer. He was still her employee. The passer-bys could understand him carrying her because her leg hurt… not because he was enjoying the feel of her thighs against his waist. Besides, her whispers in his ear were sending heated tremors straight to his groin. “I will put you down when we arrive at the camper. Not a second less.”
Lea pouted and rested her cheek against his head. “Fine.” Who was she to rush him? She was enjoying the closeness as well. Of all the times she had seen his chest and arms bare, Lea had never guessed just how well toned his muscles were. His grip on her thighs was firm but gentle. She could feel the muscles in his back flex with each step he took.
Wanting a distraction from the rising heat in between her legs, she played with the collar of his jacket. “Can I see Uncle Janis soon?” It was a question she had wanted to ask since she had found out Janis was hurt. Lea was careful not to ask it too loud so that no one around them could hear. But as soon as it was out of her mouth she knew she had killed the semi-upbeat mood.
Her question, which was asked in a very low whisper that blew hot air over his ear, made Heero suppress a desire filled shudder. “Sorry, no. It’s too risky right now.” He felt her slump against his back again. Torn between the growing lust in his pants and the sadness in his heart, he sped up his pace. ‘It doesn’t feel right to keep her from Janis.’
‘It isn’t safe for you to take her to him either!’ logic argued. ‘Take your own advice and sit still. You’re running blind here. You can’t make a move until they do.’
Heero let Lea slide to the ground once they reached the door of their camper. “Don’t say anything,” he whispered as he unlocked the door.
Figuring it was one of those weird safety precautions, Lea nodded and followed him inside. She stood still while Heero checked every nook and cranny for a video or listening device. Lea gave a sigh of relief when he came up empty. “You’re not going to do this every time we come back to the camper, right?”
“I will.”
Her initial reaction was to start screaming her head off. ‘Screaming won’t help.’ Instead she remained silent and fetched her pajamas. They were like the ones Heero had put on her the night before. This pair was green with little white, pink and blue daisies embroidered around the cuffs of the sleeves and legs. “Do you want to take the shower first?”
“Ladies first,” he said with a mock bow. Lea started to curtsy but stopped when a bolt of pain shot through her thigh. She smiled sheepishly and ducked into the bathroom. Heero used the time to go over the camper one more time for any listening devices. Again, he found nothing. A part of him was happy the place was clear but logic wouldn’t stop nagging him. ‘Are these people professionals or not?’ Shrugging, Heero gathered his blankets and pillows to make his bed on the couch.
Lea’s mind was swimming in worry while she was in the shower. It gave her too much time to dwell on the past. She traced a finger over one of the scars on her thigh. ‘It’s happening again. Heero saved Janis but…’ She closed her eyes and leaned her back against the shower wall. ‘I shouldn’t get all bent out of shape. That’s not what’s gonna help now.’ She quickly finished her shower. Her mind was still fogged with thoughts as she climbed into bed.
Heero watched in silent concern as she snuggled under the covers without a word. Her shut down attitude was expected. It didn’t mean he had to like it. ‘It’s her way of dealing…’ A part of him wanted her screaming and shouting. He knew what to do with people like that. Also, she would be letting out her frustrations. When everything will come crashing down on them, she would have a clear head. ‘She’s not trained like you are. Good thing, too. Mead wouldn’t last with the two of us on this.’ A small smile graced his lips as he stepped from the shower. The thought of Lea at his side blowing up bad guys with him was very amusing to him.
The room was dark with only the lighting from the street posts filtering in. Lea was already tucked in bed fast asleep. He scanned the room once again for any lights or sounds he had missed. Only the street lamps and Lea’s soft breathing was accounted for. Heero watched Lea sleep for a few minutes before crashing on the couch.
Peaceful slumber didn’t last long. Heero jolted awake by sound of crying. The sound was coming from Lea. She was thrashing about like someone was on top of her holding her down. He had no doubt that Lea was having a nightmare.
Instantly, Heero was at her side. Mumbling incoherently and whimpering, she tried to push him away when he tried to wake her. He locked her to him, whispering in her ear, “It’s ok. I’m here, Lea. I’m here.” He chanted it over and over until she calmed down, rested her head against his shoulder. Her breath evened out with a staccato of hiccups from crying so hard. Returning to the couch was the first thing he thought about once Lea returned to calm sleep. It was vetoed when he tried to move away and she wrapped her arms around him. Sighing his defeat, Heero settled in for the night.

So… That’s it for this chapter. More was planned but it makes more sense to start it in the next chapter. Besides, the last day of the fair is coming up and redemption must be made and … well… It’s like I said earlier, “I want to have a little bit more plot presented…” Hang in there you smut fans (and you know who you are). You shall be richly rewarded. Just wait a little while longer. Oh, and one last thing before I dash off to work in chapter 12, anyone who can give me some constructive criticism would be massively welcomed. Ya know: “This sucked because…” “I liked this part because…” “I feel the overall story is…” You can use my examples and just fill in the blanks. Alright. I’ll get off my soapbox and back to chapter 12. Ta-Ta for now.
