Chapter 11: Tears
"Hello?"
Gohan hadn't realised how long he'd been stood there for, frozen against the dinner table with blood running down his chin. He jumped at the sound of someone coming into the house, readying himself to fight. It took him a few seconds to realise who it was.
"Krillin? What are you doing here?" he asked. The deflated tone in his voice was noted immediately by Krillin as he entered the kitchen.
"You're bleeding," he said frantically, looking around for a clean cloth. Once he found one he went up to Gohan and held it to his swollen lip; it was then that Gohan started to feel it throbbing.
"I'm okay! It's nothing," he protested, gently forcing Krillin to back off a little.
"You're not okay." Krillin put the cloth down on the table, calming down somewhat. "I was outside when Cell hit you, I should've done something," he cursed himself for not being braver.
"Like what? Get killed? You did the right thing, he's unpredictable."
"Gohan, what happened between you two?" he asked outright. Gohan stopped looking at him instantly, which Krillin noticed; his eyes darted to the floor and he folded his arms as if he was hugging himself.
"Nothing... "
"Come on, it's not nothing. I saw how much it was eating you up back at Master Roshi's."
Gohan wanted desperately to tell him everything, but his voice disappeared, something was holding him back from letting it all out.
"It's complicated," was all he could say on the matter.
"What's complicated? You can tell me anything, Gohan. And if you don't want me to then I won't tell anybody else."
"I don't want you to hate me... " he said quietly, his voice wavering as the lump in his throat became painful to speak over.
Krillin placed his hands onto Gohan's arms, looking at him in the eyes - or rather, up at him since he was a lot taller than him now.
"I could never hate you, kid."
Gohan smiled weakly at the monk.
"Tell me, what happened?"
There was a pause, Gohan still trying to control his breathing, but once again, the wrong thing came out of his mouth.
"Hercule Satan's upstairs."
"Huh?"
Gohan continued fidgeting with his arms.
"I think he ran away from the cities and came across the house. Cell found him hiding in my room," he said, not completely looking at him still. "I didn't do anything to help him, I just left... "
"Is he alive?"
"Why didn't I help him, Krillin?" asked Gohan desperately. He could feel tears stinging his eyes but he refused to let them out. "Why did I walk away?"
"What could you have done? It's Cell we're talking about here."
"I could have taken it instead of him. It should have been me... "
"Gohan, is he alive?"
"I think so. He's still in my room. He needs to go to a hospital."
"It's okay, Gohan," Krillin reassured him by holding his arms a little tighter and giving him a warm smile. "You've helped him now. We're going to get him to Bulma, there's a hospital wing in the underground base where West City is hiding. Most of the gang will be there too. Now, I'm going to go upstairs and grab Mr. Satan, then we're going to head over, okay?"
"Can I catch you up?"
"I'd rather not leave you alone like this," said Krillin carefully.
"I won't do anything stupid, I promise."
Gohan walked into the living room, sighing to himself. Krillin left with an unconscious Hercule Satan on his back; he was badly beaten but not on the verge of death, he would have likely passed out from the shock.
He didn't know what to do. Should he help his friends? Would they even call themselves his friends if they knew? What about Piccolo? Sitting down on the sofa, he realised how tired he was feeling. But he couldn't face sleeping.
Jeice was so close to Gohan's house after following his ki, he didn't realise he was smiling.
"I've found you, kid... " he gasped to himself, exhausted after the long journey and a deep wound in his stomach from Frieza which he clutched onto. The white glove on his left hand had turned dark red almost completely. He was still able to fly slowly, but only just.
Gohan eventually got to the bathroom, dabbing the dry blood away from his lip in the mirror. Once it was properly clean, he was reminded of his saiyan genetics; the swelling had gone down almost completely, leaving a small closed cut behind.
He wished he'd just told Krillin everything. He felt ready to talk to somebody about it all, just not his parents and not Piccolo, they wouldn't understand. He felt that nobody fully understood him or how his brain functioned. He was a hybrid, and that in itself brought yet unknown complications.
He felt like he needed to talk to someone about his sexual feelings and the urges he was having; it had barely been a couple of weeks since he last had sex, and he was finding it harder to resist Cell's advances every day. He didn't want to go running back to the android again.
He felt his wrists itching.
"No... " he mumbled to himself. "I'm not doing it!"
It was like an embedded impulse - he saw the razor by the sink and an unseen force was pulling him towards it.
"Go away!"
He stormed out of the bathroom and into his bedroom, forgetting about the blood on the floor from Hercule's torture. Before he could let that sink in as well, he went straight to his wardrobe, rummaging through his clothes until he found what he was looking for.
"Shit!" he cursed. He was onto his last bag.
Gohan shrugged it off, there was time to worry about replacing his stash later. Right now he needed something to get him away fast, and he refused to cut himself this time. Four lines later, he felt himself floating away.
Jeice could see the house, but then he started to sense something... and so did Trunks and Krillin... and also Cell: Gohan's life force was dropping - fast.
Krillin almost dropped the unconscious world champion, who was still over his shoulder, stood outside the base with Trunks.
"I'll go! You just get him to my mother!" said Trunks.
Cell on the other hand already knew what was going on. The android simply smiled sadistically, turned around, and continued on his path of destruction through what was left of the village he was in.
Gohan began to feel light headed, but it wasn't part of the high he was experiencing. He started to feel unwell. Then he felt his nose start running.
"What the... "
He wiped his nose on the back of his hand since he wasn't near any tissues to clean it for him - there was blood all over his palm. His eyes widened, but before he could panic, he passed out.
"Gohan!"
Trunks barged into the house through the already broken front door fifteen minutes later. He frantically searched all the rooms downstairs before running up the battered staircase.
"Gohan! Where are you?"
He went into Gohan's room, to find it in terrible shape. What frightened him the most was a large splatters of blood on the floor next to the closet. Sensing Cell near by, he felt himself panic. His heart almost stopped when he found Gohan in a heap on the floor.
"No... " He instantly fell to the ground and checked Gohan's neck for a pulse; it was then when he noticed the severe nose bleed. He pushed his long hair behind his ear and listened at Gohan's mouth to see if he was breathing. And he was - barely.
"Gohan?"
Trunks looked up at a white-haired, red-skinned alien stood before him; he had a severe, bloody wound in his abdomen. Trunks held onto Gohan protectively.
"You're one of Frieza's men, aren't you? Stay away from him or you'll regret it!"
"No! Please! I'm not gonna hurt him I swear!" said Jeice, gasping with pain as he spoke.
"Yeah, I've heard that one before!"
They both heard a small sound coming from Gohan, who opened his eyes slightly.
"Jeice?"
Trunks looked surprised.
"You know this guy?"
Gohan smiled with relief before slipping into the darkness again.
"Let me come with you! I'm on my own I promise."
Trunks was reluctant to say yes, but he knew he could fight Jeice off if he had to.
"Okay, but no funny stuff."
Goku was pacing outside the entrance to the hideout. He couldn't help but be worried about his son's life as he felt it slipping away. Lost in his own thoughts, he didn't notice Trunks running towards him with an unconscious Gohan with Jeice in tow.
"Goku! He's in pretty bad shape. Take him to my mother!"
Goku almost forgot to breathe when he saw his son. His face looked uncomfortable as he slept.
"What are you doing here?" said Goku, staring at Jeice bewildered.
"Uh... "
"He helped me save Gohan," said Trunks. Jeice was suprised that Trunks would jump to his defense.
"We had each other's backs in Hell. He's my friend," said Jeice sincerely.
Goku was forced to use instant transmission to get into the hide out as the door was sealed completely by now. Gohan was placed on a bed and taken to the medical area, where some of the city residents have ended up, including Mr Satan. They all had either been crushed by fallen buildings or attacked by Frieza's men. Tien and Chiaotzu were helping out, whilst Yamcha was in the medical area with his leg in plaster; they'd long since run out of sensu beans.
"Come on, this way," said Goku, noticing Jeice's wound.
Bulma left Jeice on the bed in his own cubicle with Trunks, who was more or less acting as a body guard for her. The alien put on a black t-shirt and pants after having his torso wrapped in bandages and his damaged armor thrown away. Jeice looked at Trunks with curiosity.
"You look really familiar."
Trunks looked back at him with a stern look on his face.
"Are you a saiyan?"
"Yeah."
"Pure saiyan?"
"No. My mother is human." Trunks made a gesture towards Bulma. "My father is a saiyan."
Jeice looked at him harder before it finally hit him.
"Vegeta... "
"Looks like my father is well known among you people."
Remembering his death at the hands of the saiyan prince, Jeice nodded in response. "You could say that." Trunks turned to leave him. "Is Gohan okay?"
"I'm going to see him now. Don't try anything funny."
Jeice was somewhat frightened by Trunks; his serious side was so much like Vegeta.
Gohan lay in bed, staring up at the ceiling with no expression on his face; the ceiling was his safe place, nothing get to him or hurt him there. Whatever medicine Bulma had given him had reversed the affects of the drugs on him. Bulma walked out of his cubicle and towards Trunks.
"How is he?"
Bulma sighed with worry.
"He won't talk to me, but I could tell just by looking at him... "
"What is it?"
"Please keep this to yourself, I think Gohan could really use a friend. It was a drug overdose."
"What?" Trunks could hardly believe it. Just what exactly had Gohan been through while he was away?
"It looks like he's going to be okay. But I think it's in everyone's best interests that the truth stays between us. I'll tell Goku and Chi Chi that he has a virus or something. Can you try and talk to him?"
Trunks nodded uneasily. He passed Mr Satan, who was keeping his head down. It was as if he didn't want anybody to recognise him.
Goku was weaving in and out of all the people wandering through the cave, before being suddenly grabbed by the arm and yanked into a corner.
"Piccolo!"
"Is Gohan okay?" asked the namek.
"For now, yeah."
"I think this has Cell written all over it."
"Should we tell the others what's been going on?"
Piccolo felt his heart drop into his stomach thinking about what they saw back in Hell. "No, Gohan wouldn't want that. He's too fragile right now."
Gohan sat up as soon as Trunks came into his cubicle.
"Trunks?!" Gohan sounded almost happy to see him, happier than he'd been about seeing anyone in years.
"Hey," he said softly with a smile.
"What are you doing back here?"
"Our dimensions merged, I figured you guys could use a hand," Trunks smiled at him, but he cold feel the tension in the air. "What happened to you?"
"I don't know... " sighed Gohan. It was the only answer he had for him.
"My mom knew straight away what was wrong with you," he said. Gohan eyes widened. "Don't worry, she's not going to tell anybody. What did you take?"
"Cocaine," he answered, finally feeling able to talk. "I've been taking it for over a year. I didn't have any more than usual, I guess it was just a bad batch or something."
"Your father told me that you killed yourself a few weeks ago."
Gohan squeezed his eyes shut, shuffling over to sit on the edge of the bed where Trunks joined him.
"What else did he tell you?"
"That you were sent to Hell, and Cell was giving you trouble."
"Something like that," said Gohan, shrugging. "I got sent to Hell because I felt like I deserved to be there. I threw a few ki blasts around and bam, that was it."
"There's more to this than you're letting on."
"How can you tell?"
"Because I've known you all my life," said Trunks, placing his hand on his shoulder. "Krillin told me that you were trying to tell him something earlier about what happened with Cell, but you couldn't."
"Why does anyone need to know?" Gohan grew nervous as Trunks got closer to the truth.
"Because if you don't tell anyone, then it's only going to get worse."
"Please don't make me... " Those tears were back, threatening to spill out, but he continued his fight to hold them back.
"It's okay. I won't tell anybody if you don't want me to. It won't leave this room."
"Um... " Where was he meant to start? How was he even going to put it into words in a way that wouldn't scare him away?
"What happened?"
"I... I don't know how it happened, it was just... "
"It's okay," Trunks held his hand this time, urging him to speak.
"I got too close."
"What do you mean?"
Gohan took in a deep breath and squeezed his eyes shut.
"I slept with him."
He didn't want to see Trunks' reaction. There was a horrible silence that seemed to last forever, and even if Gohan wanted to see the look on Trunks' face, he wouldn't have been able to see it properly - he finally let those tears out, the very ones he'd kept hold of for years.
"Did he force himself onto you?" There was a hint of anger that was audible in his voice which Gohan didn't like at all.
"No... I made the first move."
"Why?" Trunks chose his response carefully, his first instinct being to go off on one. But what good what that have done either of them?
"I don't know," sighed Gohan. "I felt so miserable and he was just... there. I just needed someone... anyone. Just to make it all stop for a second." He kept his eyes to the floor, hanging his head down to try to hide the tears rolling down his face. But Trunks wasn't easily fooled, he could tell he was crying just by listening to his breathing.
"I get it." He did understand to an extent, just not the person he chose.
"Do you?" said Gohan sardonically. "Because I don't."
"But Cell... he doesn't care about you. He could never - "
"I don't love him if that's what you're implying," Gohan said, already knowing that. "There was never any love in what we were doing. If anything, he fucking disgusts me."
"It's okay, Gohan."
"No it's not! I just used him to make myself feel better. What's okay about that? What the hell is wrong with me?!"
Trunks pulled him to his chest all of a sudden, and that was when Gohan finally broke down.
Gohan stepped out of his cubicle, finally realising it was merely a curtain around a hospital bed. He looked around and saw that this entire hideout was an underground cave, fully lit from a ceiling as high as a large cave.
The hospital wing consisted of around one hundred small cubicles, most of them full with patients. It looked like they were all stable for now. Looking around, it looked like only a small amount of the population of West City had made it inside. The whole place must have took years to complete. After the incident with King Piccolo over twenty years ago, they must have started to construct hideouts like this all over the planet.
"Oh, thank fuck for that!" Gohan was pounced on out of nowhere, feeling himself calm down again when he realised that it was Jeice. "How the hell are you?"
Gohan dove into the depths of his brain for an appropriate enough answer, but caught sight of the way Jeice wrapped his arm protectively around his own torso.
"What happened to you?" he asked, choosing to skim over his question instead at the same time.
"Oh... uh. Well lets say I'm officially a fugitive according to Frieza."
"We'll have you," smiled Gohan. Trunks smiled at them. At least now he knew Gohan wasn't completely alone in the otherworld.
"We'd better go find the others," he said.
Frieza walked towards Cell with a small bag. There were on the outskirts of West City.
"You've already used this on the kid haven't you?"
"What's that?" said Cell, turning to face the small alien. Frieza reached into the bag and took out a bottle of blue liquid. Cell nodded; it was in fact the same substance he had used on Gohan. "I'd say only use a lower dose on the living, we don't know how lethal it is."
"And the brat's father?"
"Go nuts... " The android swore he picked that manner of speech up from Gohan. Frieza gave his trademark smirk and took out a few syringes.
The gang were all gathered in their living quarters, settling into the base.
"So you've no way of fighting him?" said Vegeta, annoyance in his facial features. Gohan shook his head. Jeice was next to him, trying not to make eye contact with Vegeta, who didn't seem too bothered by their new alliance. "Kakarot, haven't you learned anything new?"
Goku looked at his rival in shock. "Why, haven't you?"
"Of course I have you clown!" yelled Vegeta, looking annoyed. "I'm just saying that Cell's been training too, and from what I'm sensing, none of us are going to be a challenge for him. Frieza shouldn't be a problem at least. Hey Jeice!"
Jeice jumped a little and finally looked at Vegeta. "Yeah?"
"Anything useful on Cell you could add to the discussion?"
"Um.. just... he's a total... you know..." He was going to curse until he saw that children were present in the form of Goten and the younger version of Trunks.
"Well a lot of use you were!"
"I think that's all of them."
Frieza, put the last full syringe inside the bag.
"There should be at least enough in one syringe for four of them. Use a full one on Goku," said Cell.
"You ready?"
"Cell and Frieza are coming." Gohan looked up at Piccolo, slightly relieved that it wasn't himself who said it.
"What?" said Vegeta.
"He knows where we are!"
"How are we going to stop him, you guys?" asked Krillin.
The last thing they all saw was a bright light... then everything went black.
Trunks was the first to wake up, he struggled in his bindings, realising they were now in a much larger room with the rest of the gang. Master Roshi and the others were all bound by chains next to each other. Trunks gasped at a sharp pain in his neck. He managed to pet a decent reflection in Roshi's shades which were lying on the floor, and noticed a small hole. The saiyan's eyes widened and he looked at the other unconscious warriors, noticing the same injury.
"They've got us all... "
Trunks was suddenly released from the wall and pushed over across the floor with ease. Looking back over his shoulder, he saw Frieza looking down at him, laughing.
"I've got all of you saiyans right where I want you."
Tien, Yamcha, Krillin and Jeice were all bound together separately from the rest of them. Jeice was still unconscious.
Goku, Piccolo and Vegeta finally woke up as well, also tied up against the wall and seated on the floor, but remained separate from each other. They were all trying to break free, but it took a while for them to realise that they were powerless.
"You've all received a dosage of a restrictive sedative found only in Hell. It's a powerful muscle relaxant that also suppresses your powers."
"Coward! You won't face us like a true warrior so you use dirty tricks like this!" yelled Vegeta. Gohan then woke up with a groan.
"Ah, look who it is," said Frieza. Gohan sat himself up against the wall trying to regain some focus.
"Oh goody, its you," said Gohan sarcastically. Wanting a reaction out of the boy, Frieza immediately went for the unconscious Jeice, lifting him up by his hair. Gohan shot to his feet and tried to run to his friend's aid, but he couldn't break away from his shackles. Jeice's eyes finally opened and he reacted to the pain of his hair barely hanging onto his scalp. Frieza threw him to the ground.
Cell was nowhere to be found, choosing to leave Frieza to begin exacting his revenge.
