CHAPTER 12
CHAPTER 12
Trowa gasped. “It’s you.” He said with shock.
“So you two know each other?” Treize seemed amused.
“Yes, Sir. You could say that.” Said Quatre, his eyes still locked on Trowa’s.
Trowa couldn’t look away from Quatre’s eyes either. Then the spell was broken.
“Why are you here?” Trowa asked.
“I grew up with these people. I belong here.” Quatre reminded Trowa, icily.
Trowa nodded and tightened his grip on Zechs’ waist when he felt him tense, silently warning him not to do anything rash.
“I should be asking you that question Trowa. Unless you suddenly inherited from a long lost relative, you’ve never been a part of these kinds of social circles.”
That hit Trowa like ice water, he got mad; Quatre had no right to question him. “I’m here as a guest.” He said hotly. “A guest of a most distinguished person.”
“And who might that be?”
Treize answered for him, “Quatre Rabarba Winner, this is Zechs Marquise.”
Quatre inclined his head slightly. “It is a pleasure to finally meet you, sir.” He said with barely disguised aversion.
Zechs nodded. “Likewise.” he said politely.
Quatre turned to talk to Trowa again, but before he could say anything, Trowa quietly excused himself and went to find a place where he could sit down and be alone. As soon as it was polite for him to do so, Zechs also excused himself and went to find Trowa. He found him sitting out in the garden, staring at the night sky. As Zechs sat down next to him, Trowa spoke quietly. “I’m sorry Zechs. I know I was rude back there. I knew I shouldn’t have come.”
Zechs shook his head. “You did nothing wrong. It was obvious that you and Quatre had something going on, and even Quatre lost his calm, collected self for a minute.”
Both of them lapsed into silence. Trowa finally spoke up. “I guess I owe you an explanation, huh?”
Zechs noticed Trowa’s discomfort and said. “If you’re not comfortable talking about this, it can wait.”
Trowa shook his head. “I might as well tell you now. I mean you should know if we plan to...get involved with each other.”
Hearing Trowa say that made Zechs smile. Then Trowa continued, “That way you can let me down easy now before things go any further.” listening to what Trowa said he became worried. “What is it Trowa? Is something wrong?”
“It’s Quatre.”
Zechs nodded. “You see how he reacted.” When Zechs nodded again Trowa continued. “Well we used to be involved in a relationship. In fact he was the one I was talking about, when I told you I had just broken up with someone when we first met in the club.”
Zechs thought about that. Trowa’s reaction was beginning to make sense. Although he now knew why Trowa didn’t want to be near Quatre he sensed something else was wrong. “Is there anything else?”
Trowa nodded. “The reason I broke up with Quatre is...” Trowa’s voice broke. He turned his face away from Zechs when he felt tears forming in his eyes and wiped them away. He turned back to Zechs and smiled weakly. “I bet you think I’m being awfully silly right now.”
“No, no dearest.” Zechs quickly assured him and then wrapped his arms gently around Trowa. “Go ahead, cry.” He unconsciously pulled Trowa closer.
Trowa rested his head on Zechs’ shoulder as the silently sobbed. “Thank you.” He said after the tears stopped and he could breathe normally. He continued talking, not moving his head off of Zechs’ shoulder. “Quatre and I had always liked each other. We just didn’t admit it at first. Then as we spent more time together, our feelings grew. By the end of the year, we had finally admitted our feelings to each other and were dating. He was the perfect gentleman, much like yourself.” Trowa smiled at Zechs. “At least, I thought he was the perfect gentleman. That was until, a few months before I met you. He had been going out and getting drunk more and more often, and then one night he came home barely able to stand and totally zoned out. He didn’t even recognize me.” Trowa sadly shook his head. “I got him upstairs and into the shower and then changed into pajamas. He acted like he felt better then started to kiss me. At first it was fun but then he got kind of abusive. I tried to stop him and then he told me that if I really loved him, I would sleep with him. I told him no, and he got mad. Accused me of cheating him. Then he forced me d- down, stripped me, and tied me to the bed.” Trowa looked up, and met Zechs’ eyes to see a burning fury in them. He quickly averted his eyes and continued, “He then proceeded to r- rape me. The next morning, I left and went to Wufei’s house. I spent the next few weeks at his house and then Quatre called me and asked if we could have dinner together. I agreed, thinking that maybe we could work things out and then went to his house. I spent the night there and Quatre was really nice and didn’t try anything. The next morning I woke up and Quatre was gone. He left a note saying we couldn’t be together; I would never trust him again. That’s why he left me, I know it was for the best, but I just feel like it might have been something I did. I feel like it’s my fault, like I lured Quatre into doing what he did.” Trowa lapsed back into tears.
As soon as Trowa finished talking he felt himself enveloped in another hug, he returned the hug and they sat there in silence for a while until Zechs spoke. “Oh Trowa, I’m surprised you ever let anyone get near you again, after the way you were treated. You are the bravest person I know.” Zechs put a finger under Trowa’s chin and lifted his head so he could look directly into his eyes. “I promise. I will never, ever, ever, take advantage of you.”
Trowa smiled, and then softly said, “I believe you Zechs.” Then he slowly leaned in and kissed Zechs, slowly at first then with more passion. Finally they broke away from each other gasping. They sat in silence for a while then Zechs stood slowly. “I should go back inside.” He said quietly. “You can come in too or stay out here.”
“I think I’ll stay out here for a while longer.” Zechs nodded. “Zechs?” Trowa called. Zechs turned and looked at Trowa. “Thanks for listening to me and being so supportive.”
Zechs regarded him. “What are soul mates for?” He asked then turned and walked inside leaving Trowa to his thoughts. Zechs’ words kept going through his head ‘What are soul mates for?’ Was Zechs his soul mate? Trowa wanted it to be true, but still… he was scared, scared of what falling in love again could mean.
Trowa was just about to go inside when he heard the bushes rustling to his left. He tensed, “Who ever you are come out of there right now.” He demanded then gasped sharply as Quatre stepped out of the bushes. “How long where you standing there?” he demanded.
Quatre gathered as much dignity as he could and replied. “I only saw you two kissing. I didn’t hear a word that passed between you except when he was about to go back inside.”
Trowa said nothing and Quatre continued. “So I assume you let him know what went on between us.” Trowa nodded. “I’m surprised at you. I thought our breaking up would have a little more impact on you, instead I find that you’ve forgotten me and already have another boyfriend.”
Trowa raised his eyebrows in surprise. “And what about you Quatre?” he said quietly. “What about you and Treize? How is that any different?”
Quatre blushed, he had obviously forgotten about that. Trowa continued. “I know that this situation has been hard on us but I realized that I can’t live in the past forever. And neither should you. I’m pleased that Treize can make you happy. I don’t begrudge you at all. Just please don’t criticize my decision to be with Zechs. I’m sorry Quatre, you know I loved you. I still kind of do. But you and I aren’t meant for each other. I’m sorry.”
He turned and started to walk away. But Quatre’s voice made him stop. “I guess your right. I’m sorry I acted that way; I was just forced to put you behind me and accept the fact that you’d moved on. It happened a little too quickly for me to deal with it. I hope you will forgive me.” Trowa nodded. After a moment Quatre asked quietly, “So you love Zechs?”
Trowa nodded warily. “That’s right.”
Quatre smiled weakly. “Well let’s go reunite you with your love” he said and moved toward the doors leading inside. Trowa smiled. “And you with yours.” They walked inside together, their friendship one step closer to being repaired.
‘Unfortunately our friendship will never be the same.’ Trowa thought sadly. ‘He’s right, I will never fully trust him again.’
Trowa gasped. “It’s you.” He said with shock.
“So you two know each other?” Treize seemed amused.
