Kai and Rei hurried outside to the waiting car; true, they were already beyond late, but there was no need to make it worse by missing the last few classes. When Rei reached his brother's car, he opened the door to the passenger side; his brother said something to him that made him climb into the backseat instead.
Kai watched in muted fascination, until his crush began to remove his shirt and pants from last night. He would have stared for as long as he could, had Lee not called out for his attention to climb in.
Kai wanted nothing more than to get in the backseat with the half naked - - and soon-to-be fully naked - - Rei; considering that his brother also grabbed a pair of boxers for his brother to put on. Just how much did Lee think happened between them last night? Unless he has a weird thing about cleanliness, like Tala.
Slipping into the passenger's seat upfront; he tried his best not to be caught glancing to the back of the car at Rei; who was adjusting this and that of his clothing.
"Must have been some party if you stayed all night," says Lee to his brother; who only glanced up at him in the mirror for a moment so not to distract himself too long from getting clothes on.
The convertible may have the hood up but people could still see inside of it pretty well.
"Sorry I missed it."
Kai assumed this part was said for his benefit. But he knew that Rei was covering for his brother last night; he's not so love-struck that he blocks out all reason.
"I would have come," explained Lee, as he pulled the car from the driveway and started it down the road to the school. "But I had a date."
"It's fine." Kai replied in a dry tone.
"Good." Lee grinned as though Kai hadn't had any ounce of attitude in his words.
The Russian couldn't help but wonder if the used-to-be guy of his dreams was always that shallow and arrogant. It must have been love that made him a bit deaf to that; otherwise, he would have known right away that Lee was not the right Kon. But then again, he truly had no knowledge that there even was another guy. Just that the kid at the party had that lastname, and was of Chinese origin, just as Lee is. And even though the personality clashed; Kai was sure that Lee was the one; the he had changed over the two and half years it has been since the party.
When Rei was finally settled in and buckled up; he held the shoulder of the front chair and spoke to his brother. "How did you know where I was?"
"Well you didn't exactly come home last night." Lee explained. "Uncle was gonna chew you out for breaking the mirror in the bathroom - - How's your hand, by the way?" He asked in all concern.
Rei looked at the soggy, bloody bandage wrapped snuggly around his hand and fingers. "It's fine. Brooklyn cleaned and wrapped it last night."
Brooklyn?! Thinks Kai. What does that weirdo have to do with anything? How many people are after him, anyway? Glancing at Rei in the side-view mirror, the younger Kon smiled back at him before looking away.
"Anyway, the school called." Says Lee. "That's how I knew you didn't go - - and you're lucky I picked it up and not Uncle. First the mirror, and then skipping school... He would have blown his top."
Rei didn't seem moved by that threatening speech. He merely perked up when he saw the building approaching. "Don't worry, bro. I'll fix everything when I get home later; and I'll be sure I at least get the homework from the classes I missed."
"That's my brother."
The adorable younger Kon rest his back against the seat as if to say: Quiet now, I'm thinking.
Which gave Kai time to think a bit more, as well. He just found out that his crush made a boyfriend within the short five months he's lived in Japan. This apparently happened over the summer; at least, that's what Rei said, while he scrubbed his back during the shower, and they chatted.
Rei was like a flood gate in there; talking about this and that that he and Tyson have done together. Kai informed him that he didn't have to keep talking about his boyfriend; that he understood there was no chance for the two of them - - unless Rei was free. But from what Kai could tell, Rei was the one who should be breaking it off with, Tyson. That jerk has the nerve to be petty and jealous when odds are he's a slut! Not to mention, the guy ignored him for a week after Rei had thought that were already friends.
The Russian couldn't image what he would think or feel if that were him on his first week of school. Kai had always had Tala, and even if he didn't people naturally gravitated to him due to either his money or his looks. So Kai was never at a loss for attention. If anything, he wondered what it was like to not have attention. But he knew one thing, he would never do something like that, whether the Chinese boy was just a friend of his at the time or a potential friend.
"Here we are." Announced Lee slowing to a stop.
"Thanks." Says Rei climbing out hastily.
"See you later, Kai." Lee says almost like he's picking on him.
Again, Kai answers in a dry tone. "Yeah." Perking up, he looked over the roof of the car, saying. "Bye, Rei."
"Bye." He waved. He looked down when his brother tapped his hand that was holding the windowsill. "What?"
"What? What? What's with him?" Asks Lee. "What happened last night?"
"Kai?" He shrugged. "I don't know; like you said he's weird. But…. Last night," he hesitated on saying anything but figured it wouldn't really make a difference either way... What's done is done. "Last night, I drank some spiked punch."
"You were drunk?!"
"Not exactly… I was… aroused - - it was ecstasy; a guy dissolved it into the drink."
"Geez, Rei."
"Like it was my fault! And anyway, Kai helped me to bed before anybody could do anything.." He waved a hand to dismiss any other thoughts. "Don't even worry about it."
"Well, I have to worry about it, you're my brother." He glanced at the high school. "And I wouldn't count on Kai to not do anything; you know he's into guy's right - - we talked about this."
"I know, I know…" He wished he never said anything. "I've gotta go before I miss another class. Can you pick me up after school? I have to go to therapy today."
"Yeah, I think you better. Miss Ito called again. Y'know she's got a really cute voice - - do you think she likes younger men?"
"I don't think so." Turning, he said. "Anyway, see you after school."
"Bye, bro!" The car pulled away with a loud screech.
Checking his watch; Rei figured that it was about time for gym. He prayed his brother put his clothes in his backpack this morning. Walking down the hall, he turned in at the office area making sure he let those little old ladies know that he has now arrived at school, and they can call back the search dog's dogs for the missing pothead. Although, he does feel a little nauseas. But that's probably due to the fact that he knows what's waiting for him at the end of the day.
A long talk that he doesn't wanna have. Can't she just accept that his troubles are his own? He accepts that his parents are dead; so who really cares that some other thing is bothering him. It's his own problem; and he'll deal with it the way he always does. Speaking of which, his way of dealing with it was at a dangerous low, so he'd better find a pharmacy quick.
...
"Jump, Tachibana! Come on!" The coach yelled at some poor, fragile child. "Lift those damned girly legs of yours! Come on!"
Rei watched at a side shot while crossing the grass, at the shouting burly man. "Here, sir." He said handing off the slip of paper that the office woman had given him. "Sorry for being late. There was an emergency."
"As long as you're dressed; go sit down." He said in a more understanding tone, since Rei didn't slack off in gym.
Locating his best friend and lover; he sat down on the grass next to Tyson, and wrapped his arms around him before laying his head on his shoulder. "I'm beat."
"I'll bet," says Tyson. "Where the hell were you all morning - - as if I didn't know."
Lifting his head, Rei looked at him. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Alright, spill it, Rei. Ozuma told me where you were last night," his voice was firm with expectations of the prefabricated lies he must have heard through out the day. "So there's no point in lying."
The accussed shrugged to this. He really didn't care that Tyson, or anybody, knew that he was at Kai's. But he would just like to know who was making it worse, so that he could brighten their day a little bit more for slandering his good name. "It's true. I was at a party at Kai's house. I missed the most of it because I fell asleep - - no big deal."
"Fell asleep!? I'm sorry, Rei, but nobody misses two and a half classes, because they fell asleep," Tyson took his shoulder back so that he could look his boyfriend in the eye. "You had the half of that party that you'd missed to be asleep; so what were you doing all morning dude? Reliving last night?!"
Rei cocked a brow to that. "What are you getting at? That I cheated on you?!" He almost laughed, if Tyson wasn't being so serious. "Well, sorry to disappoint you, Ty', but nothing happened. I'm just not used to staying up all night, I guess."
He didn't have the nerve to tell him he was drugged into it. That might result in some rather unfortunate events. So better to just stick with the truth - - minus the ugly details.
"I was already feeling tired before I went over... I should have gone home, but, Kai said it was fine if I crashed at his place."
The jealous boyfriend seemed happy with that. "Just as long as nothing happened. I mean, you talk about the cool kids over there like you're in love with them; and then you never let us meet. What am I supposed to think when you're spending the night with some guy I don't know?"
"I know, and I'm sorry." He kissed his cheek. "But, really, nothing happened."
"Good." He crossed his arms.
"Who told you where I was, anyway?"
Ozuma raised a guilty hand to that. "Wellll, I had to. He's my best friend… and besides, I think you'd wanna know if Tyson did the same thing."
"It's fine. But who made up the rest?"
"Oh, don't worry about that," says Tyson with a triumphant smirk. "Ozuma and me are gonna take care of that little matter after school."
Snuggling back against Tyson's shoulder, he sighed. "Good, I'm too tired." Yawning, he closed his eyes.
"Shields! Front and center!" Yelled the coach.
"Jumping is just as bad as running, sir! I'm not doing it!"
"Why don't you get it over with?" Tyson suggest, petting his lover's hair. "You might as well, you know your mom'll kill you if she sees another F."
"Then it was nice knowing you."
"It's not even hard, and besides, you can just claim height is your disadvantage and maybe he'll let you sit out."
"Doubt it." Standing, Ozuma walked over to their coach.
"Hey, Rei." Tyson bounced the resting cheek on his shoulder.
"Hm?" He answered without opening his eyes.
"I have track meet tonight; are you gonna come watch me?"
"What time?"
"Six."
"I'll be there with bells on."
At least he hoped so. Ms. Ito's sessions tended to be long, especially once they really got to talking. He was sure she would understand that he couldn't stay long, and she would let him go watch his true love run like the star he is.
For the rest of gym: the class was jumping hurdles. Chances are the track team would be doing so that evening, and the coach wanted them to be prepared. Rei only had to do it about four times; he was so tired by the third hurdle that he almost missed the forth one, by a toe, and that would have resulted in a few missing teeth once he hit the ground.
Not because the ground was that hard, but a fall unprotected tended to be nasty; that's why they tell you to shield your face, after all. School dragged on at an alarmingly boring pace. Everything was a blur. But Rei noticed through his bits of fully checking-in and out that Kai was paying him a great amount of attention. And he was not in the mood to keep explaining to him that he was already seeing someone. Like Lee says: Let him dream.
At some point around lunch time; Brooklyn had tried speaking with Rei, but thanks to Kai practically dragging him to their lunch table, he didn't get out two words. The food was pretty bland. They were having some kind of funky tasting lasagna, and the bad taste was probably due to the sauce they were using in it.
Lee remembered his gym clothes, but he couldn't remember his lunch... That's a real brother for ya. Always throwing you out into the real world when you like your little shelter. Mostly he was just talking about food.
"Are you ok?" Asked Kai leaning over to whisper. "You look a little out of it."
"It must just be side effects or something," he yawns. "I'm not usually this tired."
"Hey, kitty-litter?"
"Shut up, Tala." Warns Kai.
"Want a drink?" He shook his small carton of chocolate milk in Rei direction.
"I said, shut up!"
"Why? Don't tell me you feel sorry for this guy? He brought it on himself; I didn't make him drink it."
"Well you didn't help by doing it in the first place,"
Tala sneered at his best friend. "What's the big deal, anyway? Everyone else had some."
"Well, Tala," chimes Rei. "Unlike everybody else, I treat my body like a temple - - so I don't wanna infect it with disgusting things."
The red-head merely smirked to that, almost laughing. "Well 'temple', you'd better check yourself in a mirror because your nose is bleeding."
Slapping a finger to his nose; Kon didn't need to see the red that he knew was there due to the moisture from his touch. Shoving his seat back, he started for the door but paused. Turning around, he stuck his middle finger under Tala's tray of food, then used it to flip it over onto his lap! Messy left-over lasagna scraps, pineapple chunks, juice and all landed on Tala's pristine clothes.
Tala hollared bloody war, then stood up knocking the food from his lap. "You're dead, litter-box! Dead!"
Flipping him off, again, Rei said. "Learn to keep your comments to yourself, you jerk."
As Rei marched off; Brooklyn started the lunch room off in an unappreciated applause. It was about time someone put that red menace in his place. Rei entered the first bathroom he could find, and he pushed open the first stall he saw. Grabbing a handful of toilet paper, he began to blow his nose, hoping to quickly get rid of his embarrassing problem. But the more he got rid of, the more seemed to wanna come out to take its place. Sitting on the floor - - back to the wall - - he sighed back tears. Raising his head so they wouldn't fall; he held the tissue to his nose.
I'm not gonna cry…. He's just being a jerk... I can't let him get to me like that. That only makes the problem worse…. I gotta relax.
Relax? Isn't that how this all started? You wanted to relax?
Oh god. He knew it. It just takes that one little moment of letting his guard down for them to started talking to him. He just wished they would shut up! He wished everybody would just leave him alone! He wished… He wished….
"Rei? Are you in here?" It was Kai.
Sniffling back the blood, he stood up; back still against the wall; the stall door remained closed. "Why does Tala have to be such an asshole. Why can't we just let by-gone's, be by-gone's?"
"I'm sorry."
"I mean, why does he even hate me? I've done nothing to him? Is it because I bumped into him on the street that time before?" He asked without really wanting an answer. "So what?! People are gonna bump into you."
"I know. But if you wanna know what his problem is, you're gonna have to ask him." Taking out his handkerchief, he held it under the door to his disgruntled friend. "Don't worry its clean."
"Thanks." He held it to his nose, glad for soft material as opposed to the harsh wood-like toilet paper this bathroom has. "I wish I never came here - - to Japan I mean. There's nothing good here for me."
"You don't mean that,"
"I do. Now I've got a woman hounding me for this, and my uncle getting on me about that; and it's all too much - - oh! And now Tyson is jealous of us! Can you imagine that? Nothing's even going on."
So Tyson is the jealous type… Thinks the Russian. This may actually work to my advantage. Sure... Rei will be sad, at first, but I'm sure once he gets used to the idea of us, he'll feel better.
"It's ok, you know."
"How? How can it be ok?" He finally opened the door and stepped out over to the sink to wash his face and hands. "I'll get this washed."
"Don't worry about." He stood beside him. Looking at both of them in the mirror, he smiled at how well they work together physically. "Give Tala a chance… We're skipping tomorrow; I want you to do the same. We're meeting at the donut place; don't let Lee give you a ride."
Drying his face with a paper towel, he sighed. "I don't think that's a good idea. My uncle's already on the war path for me about the mirror. Last thing I wanna do is skip and make it worse."
With a shrug, Kai walked behind him, placed his hands on his shoulders giving the muscles a light massaging. "It shouldn't make a difference what he thinks. You already said it yourself, you're bored... The reason you're bored is because you're playing a game of 'obey the rules, so that everyone is happy'." He stopped his movement, holding his hands there, though he pressed his cheek to Rei's. "Break a couple of them and see how much better you feel."
"It couldn't help."
"Couldn't hurt."
Thinking it over, he frowned. "Won't Tala be there though? His hatred towards me is gonna ruin any fun any of us try to have."
"It's a time thing. He'll warm up to you."
"Seems to me like all I do is seek approval from someone…. I wish it would all just stop, and everyone would leave me alone."
"Alone is never good. You remember how badly you felt when you thought your friends hated you that first week?"
"How could I forget."
"Imagine that times ten because you've rejected them. Once you're in someone's life, it's hard to detach yourself without offending somebody."
"So what am I supposed to do, fake it?"
"No. Find a way to enjoy it."
Rei said nothing after this; Kai turned him around and hugged him.
"It's just one day. I'll take the blame, if it's all that bad; I know where you work... I can meet your uncle there and tell him…. It'll be fun."
Rei really didn't think so, but for some reason, he wanted to believe Kai. He liked to believe anything he said. Besides, any one that makes the voices stop must have some kind of authority. And he felt he needed that.
