::: Consequences :::
Gohan could see that Renjiamori felt strongly about everything he said, which was seldom anything in response to his questions as they traveled up until now, but since they've eaten and sat down to rest, Gohan was determined to get him to talk and he asked, "So, did you know Jeremel before this happened?"
The look in Renjiamori's eyes was both pensive and serene as he gazed into Gohan's eyes. After a moment he smiled, turning his head to look out into the darkening sky and the sparkling waters. Renjiamori's thoughts were bent towards so many different things and so for a long time he didn't say anything. Finally he explained, “I thought I knew enough of him. In my circle his was a well-respected man, whose regard many people relied on.” Overcome with disgust, he grumbled and said, “I can't help feeling I should have known something like this would happen."
"Why do you say that?" Gohan wondered. Gohan noticed the look in his eyes and he seemed to be having a conversation with himself.
"Because of the circumstances which determined his reasons for attacking us," Renjiamori said.
Gohan couldn’t help but ask, "What do you mean?"
"He was almost one of us," Renjiamori lifted his chin higher, out of either indignation or pride, Gohan wasn't sure, and he was saying, “a fighter for hire under the reign of Frieza. I'm guessing his people's power held Frieza at bay for some time. Still, there were those who could be persuaded to take on such a powerful race."
Gohan guessed, "The Saiyans?"
"Yes," Renji confirmed. "The former Saiyan king killed his people. He and the king had been friends at one point in time and so Jeremel kept some idea of loyalty to the King by helping Vegeta, but it seems it was all a rouse. He'd planned it all out, biding his time, gaining strength in absolute silence, until the day came when he could destroy Vegeta's new home." He sighed and said, "Revenge. Revenge is a sweet dish, but it has a bitter finish. He doesn't just want to destroy the Earth; Jeremel means to take Frieza's place."
Gohan didn’t understand, of course, but he could follow along. He asked his most pressing concern, "Why the Earth, though? Why not just try to kill Vegeta?"
"He wants him to suffer," Renjiamori said, and as he said it, Gohan watched his face darken.
Gohan huffed and said, "He could be anywhere, then.”
"Yes, the likelihood that he's still on the planet is slim. I ought to be contacting Nartal to see if he's gone back there, though I am not too worried about it, I doubt he'd be so stupid. Actually, Goku is right, we need to rest and refocus. We ought to bring him out of hiding if we can. I'd like to be discussing this with Vegeta but..."
They both knew that wasn't an option right now. Upon the subject being changed, Gohan couldn’t help but ask, "What was with that fight between you and my father?" He'd been avoiding the question as long as possible, but he was dying to know.
Renjiamori kind of smiled before answering, "Isn't it obvious?" He turned to face Gohan again, "You know he and Vegeta are together don't you?"
"Well, honestly, I knew that they were something, but I didn't know how serious it was."
"Oh," Renji replied, "Well, apparently it was serious. I highly doubt Vegeta took very well to our lack of indiscretion, earlier, and Goku must be angry with him, as well, to snap on me like that so publicly. Your friends looked shocked."
Gohan laughed, "The two young boys are family. They are my little brother, Goten, and Vegeta's son, Trunks. The other man is Piccolo. Piccolo’s a great ally to us and he knew about them, too, but, yeah, I agree, shocked is a good word for the other two... Why would my dad be so angry with you and Vegeta, unless..."
Renji shrugged but laughed a little, guessing at what Gohan might infer, he said, “Unless I kissed Vegeta,” and the certainty of his face told Gohan that is what happened. Renji added, “Goku must have found out and now he doesn't trust either one of us."
"So…" Gohan wasn’t as surprised as he thought he would be upon hearing such a declaration and he wanted to ask an even more personal question, but he hesitated. He didn’t for a moment think that Renjiamori is lying about anything he’s said and, upon listening to him speak more and more, he could see how Vegeta would enjoy his company. His countenance is mixed parts of intelligence and humor and pride and sensitivity.
Renjiamori knew what he wanted to know and offered up some information by saying, "I asked Vegeta to stay on Nartal longer than they had planned, but he was reluctant and told me he didn't know what he would do. The kiss was a good-bye kiss, really, like saying good-bye to another life. I couldn't help it. Seeing him again after all these years didn’t make it any easier. He's made it clear to me, though, he's moved on. I should have let that part of my past die long ago, but I think I always hoped that it would work out between us."
"Wow,” Gohan smiled at him and said, “I never thought I’d meet an acquaintance of Vegeta’s that wasn’t trying to kill us.” Renjiamori laughed to Gohan’s surprise. Gohan added, “You really weren't just friends with Vegeta?"
"No, Vegeta doesn't make friends easy."
Gohan still smiled and couldn’t help but add in honesty, "Vegeta's never mentioned you."
"No, not even to Goku," Renji sighed this time, not surprised or bothered by Gohan in the least. It feels good to talk about it. He said, "This is my fault."
"I'm still confused," Gohan said.
Renji smiled sadly, "I know. Long story short, I used to be with Vegeta when he was in his early twenties. He left for Earth and ever since we split up I've been working to counteract all the bad that Frieza did. I never thought that one of the deranged survivors would pop up to try and take his place... maybe Vegeta but..."
Gohan laughed a little and Renji was glad he was intelligent enough to get him. Gohan asked, "What happened between you and Vegeta?"
"He went out one day on a mission and never came back- we never actually broke up.”
"Oh," Gohan said and everything just fell into place, even the parts he didn't know about before. Renji loves Vegeta and just wants to spend time with him after all these years. His father is confused and nervous about Renjiamori because he's never felt secure in his relationship with Vegeta and now he doesn't know what might happen if Renjiamori tells Vegeta he loves him. Vegeta's probably been doing a lot of thinking ever since he got to Nartal and he's probably been shutting both of them out, instead of talking it through with each of them little by little.
"Vegeta cares a great deal for Goku, Gohan," Renjiamori stared back into the lake and said, "He wants to be with him, I can tell. I understand now." Gohan would have asked if Renjiamori hadn't kept going, but he did and so he listened as he poured out his soul to the young man he barely knew, confessing, "I know Vegeta so well. I know his subtleties like I do my own. I know when he's serious and when he isn't. He's serious about Goku.
"He left because he had to leave. I always thought that was an excuse, but no, he couldn't stay on Frieza's base any longer, for his own sanity's sake. Life on the ship was not life and there was another Saiyan out there. He was so determined to meet him. The only other Saiyan alive... I should have known that he would fall in love with him. I should have known it all. I was never... the one.
"I wanted him to love me so badly, I wanted him to find peace with me the way I found healing with him. I wanted him to need me like I craved him."
Gohan's heart ached as he heard Renjiamori's words, He knew Renji was in pain, though he showed no signs of breaking down or remorse, Gohan could tell Renjiamori was reliving his past over and over again and he could tell a great similarity in the workings of his mind and Vegeta’s. He saw him as obsessive, and noticed his hardened eyes, and he knew his heart was full of disappointment in his life. Renjiamori would never heal from this and he obviously has a lot of scarred thoughts.
Gohan began to understand the man sitting next to him more than he could understand even his father, and in his own revelation, he asked, having already crossed the boundary of audacious questions, "Your planet was destroyed, too? You're a prince?"
Renjiamori turned to Gohan again, and, impressed with him, he replied, "Yes. I had heard of Vegeta long before I met him and I had admired him then. Most people in those days feared Frieza's approach and watched out for it while cowering at the wreckage he left behind. He was Frieza's most precious prize. If there was ever a thing to fear before him, it was the Saiyans. I didn’t fear the Saiyans, though, I respected them.
"I never understood Vegeta's strength until I knew it for myself. He showed me how to live with purpose after so much destruction. His purposes were different from mine, though, and that, I think, is where he decided to draw the line and finally part ways. Now he has found someone whose destiny is linked up with his own."
Gohan sat with Renjiamori in silence for some time after that, both considering the same topics at hand but neither coming up with any sort of conclusion.
Finally Renjiamori asked suspiciously, but in good humor, "Is this what you meant when you said you had a place for me to stay?"
Gohan laughed and Renji laughed, too, glad to be able to cheer him up. Gohan answered, "No, this is not where we'll stay. I guess we should be heading that way about now. Follow me."

"Vegeta," Bulma caught him alone in the hallway, having seen his return on the security cameras, she hurried there.
"What, woman?" Vegeta stopped to listen, figuring he owed her as much.
They knew each other too well for her to ask any of the customary how are you's so instead she asked, straight to the point, "Did the serum work?"
Vegeta smirked and let his tail unwrap from around his waist, showing off her handiwork.
Bulma almost squealed as she saw it and went in for a closer look. "Well, am I a genius or what?" She declared, more to herself than anything. She didn't need to hear any confirmation. Vegeta only chuckled.
"So," she put her hands on her waist and observed Vegeta as she asked, "Who's this Renjiamori guy?"
Vegeta had already turned to walk away, but he stopped in his tracks at the question and only answered, "A friend."
"Something’s going on Vegeta. Tell me what it is."
Vegeta turned to his wife and, knowing he'd save himself a lot of trouble, he explained, "We're under attack by a man who thinks he'll be the next Frieza. He's already tried to destroy the Earth once. He failed, but now we don't know where he is."
"What?!!" Bulma said, stunned, "Why have the boys been so calm about talking about this, then?" Vegeta didn't immediately answer and Bulma became suspicious, so she said, "Let me guess, he's after you?"
Vegeta smirked, "Something like that."
"Vegeta, why are you here, at your home of all places? Don't you know this is the first place he'll look?"
Vegeta chuckled, "I never said I was staying."
Bulma ignored that and went on by asking, "Where's Goku? Shouldn't you be with him, figuring this out? And where is that Renjiamori guy? Shouldn't he be helping you, too?"
Vegeta appeared in front of Bulma so suddenly her heart began racing as his voice came out low and reverberated. He said, "You ask a lot of questions, woman."
Bulma was only frightened by the sudden closeness of him and after letting out a few shallow breaths she retorted, "Maybe I could help you out if you'll just fill me in on the details." Gosh, how this reminds her of the old days where they would find any reason just to get close to one another, both out of curiosity and unquenchable attraction.
Vegeta smirked and took a step back, "I don't know any of the details about this new threat. As for Kakarot, I'm sure I'll see him later and the same goes for Renjiamori."
He started to walk away and got some distance before Bulma added, insistently, "Somethings up with you, Vegeta."
Vegeta paused and might have said, ‘So what?’ if he hadn't thought it through, and simply kept on walking.

As Gohan flew with Renjiamori towards his house he realized he could sense his father waiting for him outside. Just before he thought of what he might say first, Goku suddenly appeared before them. They halted and Gohan greeted his father cheerfully, as always.
Goku wasn't smiling. He said, "I'd like to talk to Renjiamori, Gohan. We'll see you tomorrow."
Gohan said, "Okay," and nodded slightly at Renjiamori before leaving the two men alone.
Goku wasn't sure where to begin. He stared down Renji as though he was his enemy.
Renji seemed relaxed and confident and likewise, silent, above all else. He wasn't willing to initiate a conversation he did not ask for.
Goku went to land on the ground and Renjiamori followed him. He was not afraid for his life since he knew that even if Vegeta couldn't sense him he could still sense Goku, and he did not think the man would do anything irrational. Still, adrenalin pumped through his veins. This is Goku, after all, the man who killed Frieza, a Super Saiyan, and a man certainly not to be taken lightly. To top it all off this animal of a man feels scorned by Renjiamori's personal actions towards his lover. They stood their ground for minutes on end.
Goku opened up with, "I'm sorry about earlier, I should not have said all of that, especially not in front of the younger boys." He paused but was quick to continue, saying, "I confronted Vegeta about you this morning. I should have done it sooner, or I should have just left it alone, but I made a choice and I’m not gonna apologize for it." Renjiamori went to speak but Goku had only begun, and he added, "Aside from that problem between us, I really came here to discuss something else. I can see where you feel you have a place in this fight, but I'd rather you stay out of it. Vegeta tried to keep you out of this by holding you back on the stairs today, remember? I'm saying this for your protection."
At this Renjiamori needed to interrupt him and he said, "I would be much more obliged to take your warning into consideration if we knew each other more personally, but even then I cannot say that I could take your opinion more seriously than my own on matters such as these."
Goku, in a snide remark so unlike himself, replied, "Yeah, I bet you'd feel the same way if I had expressly told you not to kiss Vegeta, but I thought better of you, and better of him, against my better judgement."
Renji had to laugh at this, in a cynical and sarcastic sort of way. He replied, "Are you really that immature? I kissed him. That was it. Tell me, when you talked to him about this, did you really sit down and discuss it, or did he tell you that you would talk about it later?" Goku growled and Renji knew he'd hit it right on the button. He shook his head, putting it into perspective for Goku, "Is this more important to you than beating Jeremel?"
"No," Goku said quickly, but then added, "And yes."
Renji scoffed, perceiving his underdeveloped love for Vegeta more clearly now. Vegeta's been keeping him on the sidelines, hanging him out to dry, giving him just enough to keep Goku coming back- for a time. Renjiamori could have guessed as much, it was the same thing Vegeta did to him but he still wondered why Vegeta was playing so many games when he obviously cares for him. Meanwhile, Goku's so bought into him that he doesn't know who to be angry at [himself, Renji, or Vegeta] or what exactly he's angry about [the kiss, the silence, the threat]. He just knows he ought to be upset and start being honest and was trying to do something about it the best way he knows how. Renji finally said, "I didn't invite Vegeta out to Nartal to ask him to be with me again, I asked him to satisfy my own ambition, sort of the same way he waited so long to seek you out.
"You know I'm not going anywhere. You won't take me somewhere else without Vegeta's permission, and Vegeta won't give you consent to do so because he knows that I can be of some use here. We need all the help we can get in fighting Jeremel, especially since we don't know what powers he has yet or how to draw him out of hiding."
Goku was beginning to think he’s ill-prepared for this confrontation, Renji's been doing more thinking about this than he has. At least, it's been hard for him to concentrate on anything other than his inflamed emotions. Am I being irrational in wanting him to stay out of this fight? He thought to himself.
"Have you talked to Vegeta since earlier?" Renji asked. Goku didn't answer. He went on to say, "For now, we must put this business aside and work together."
"I don't think so," Goku frowned. Resolved he said, "I don't want either of you involved. I don't know you well enough to know that you will actually try to fight Jeremel, since he was a former friend of yours, and Vegeta's rage towards him will blind any good he might be able to do if he could fight without any blinders."
A strange look crossed Renji's face and Goku wasn't sure what to think of it. Then a voice came into his head... Renji's voice... and it was saying... Vegeta still has not conquered his anger, and here I thought he'd been acting so calm. If it weren't for his ferocity he would have died long ago for nothing, but I still fear his rage getting the better of him.
Goku took a surprised breath and he replied, "Vegeta has died, but it was always for something." Renji's shock was palpable as Goku went on to say, "Vegeta's passion makes him a very dangerous opponent, his crutch is that his passion sometimes outweighs his intellect, and he makes rash decisions, you obviously know that. That's why I don't want him fighting, either, but I can't stop him."
Renji's breathing increased, as did his temper, and he asked, ignoring his burning desire to know how he'd gotten into his head, "But you think you can stop me?"
"I know I can."
Renji jumped back into a fighting stance, and beckoned Goku to try.
"No, Renji, I'm not going to fight you and you don't want to fight me."
"Who said anything about a fight? You won't even be able to touch me."
Goku smirked, "You're over-confident. Frieza boasted something similar, what was it? He said he could beat me without using his hands. That didn't work out too well for him."
Renji gnashed his teeth together, thoroughly pissed at being compared to Frieza and being sized-up by someone who doesn't rightly know him. Renji retorted, "All this because I kissed Vegeta? Why aren’t you trying to talk to him right now? If I knew where he was, that's where I would be. Besides, I don't know why you're so concerned about a little kiss, if Vegeta wanted, he could be with either of us right now, but he's not, is he?"
Goku thought for a long time about everything. He answered, more rational than he had been in quite some time, "If Vegeta had not given you such hope as he did in allowing you to think it might work out at some later time, then your hurt would not have been so great, and maybe we could have met under better circumstances. My problems with Vegeta are my own, and they came about before I met you."
"!!!"
"Don't worry about me and Vegeta. If you insist on fighting, then fine, but don't say I didn't warn you of the consequences." With that he appeared before him, put his hand on his shoulder, and ITed them both to Gohan's house. As Renji was realizing what had just happened, he heard Goku say, "Gohan said you could stay with him, so you will. He's a good man, better than me in this case. I'm not saying my anger at you isn't a bit harsh, but I can't help it, so now I have given you fair warning. I'll see you tomorrow."
He left before Renji could say anything. As Renji turned around he saw two houses, with Gohan coming out the front door of the closest one. Even as Gohan was running up to him he thought to himself, I see, now. Vegeta set you up to fail, Goku. If he told you in the beginning that it would never work, then he wouldn't have to risk hurting either of you by it being true. It's more a feat to both of your characters to keep it alive and he's already put it in your head that you're not up to the challenge. You’re right about one thing, though, your problems with Vegeta are not my concern.
---
"Gosh, what's wrong with me?" Goku held his head, disturbed and dizzy. He landed none-too gracefully and tucked away under a tree. How did he read Renjiamori's mind like that? What are these visions he's been having? He knows he needs to do some serious meditating, clear his thoughts, and focus now more than ever. With his intentions in the right place, Vegeta far off doing something of the same, and Renji with Gohan doing whatever he's doing, Goku's mind was anything but settled.
He tried so hard to clear his head. It’s never been so difficult in all his life. He was angry and he could feel his anger and he couldn’t escape it this time likes he’s always been able to do. The circumstances have made his mind irrational and his heart, for once, is in the same dark place.
There’s a new emotion taking hold of the old, sentimental, happy Goku. Is it all jealousy and heart-break, or could it have something to do with these new powers? Is his estranged new wisdom causing some of his dismay?
Get it together, Goku! He thought to himself, mentally exhausted. For now, he’s going to try to repair some of the damage.
His torment lasts for hours as he attempts to regain his self-control and calmness, but now he has no more time to spare, there is another presence standing before him, demanding his attention.
“Kakarot, we are not done talking,” Vegeta would have kicked him out of his trance but he thought better of it and waited for Kakarot to acknowledge him.
Goku stood up slowly and asked, “What is it, Vegeta? I thought we were supposed to be gathering our strength not wasting our energy fighting each other.”
Vegeta replied, “I am well rested. I didn’t come here to argue with you, Kakarot. Something happened earlier today and you tried to brush it off like it was nothing.” Goku didn’t voluntarily give up any information, so Vegeta was forced to ask, “What was up with you on the way to the event room? You nearly fainted.”
Goku knitted his brows together and instantly said, “I told you it was nothing.”
“You’re lying.”
“Vegeta, this isn’t going to help anything!”
“You’re hiding something!” Vegeta growled, “Tell me what it is, now.”
Goku shook his head and answered, “Vegeta, look, I don’t know what to tell you.”
“Tell me something!”
Vegeta’s eyes looked so desperate, so loving, and so concerned in that moment. Goku leaned in for a kiss, seizing him by the shoulders… and realized he was dreaming as their lips met gently. He slowly came to, still distressed by his confused emotions, even after meditating and sleeping, only to find Vegeta standing before him, demanding he give him some of his attention this instant.
Goku stood up a little groggy and said, “I can’t do this with you right now Vegeta.”
Vegeta glared and replied, “Is that how you say good-morning?”
Only then did Goku realize that it is morning, and that he would have gone on sleeping the day away if Vegeta had not woken him up. He replied, “Sorry,” and scratched the back of his head. He could sense that Piccolo was on his way and Gohan was awake with Renjiamori, but they had not left yet. He should be thanking Vegeta for waking him up, but he couldn’t shake off his funk enough to be gracious to him yet.
Vegeta asked, crossing his arms and taking a few steps away from Kakarot, “Any bright ideas?”
“No,” Goku replied, “I just kind of thought we’d wing it.”
“Tchh,” Vegeta sneered, but there was no real emotion in it, he had no ideas of his own to offer. He mumbled, irritated, “Couldn’t just pop out of the sky and announce himself, no, that would be too easy.”
Goku couldn’t help but smile at his comment. He replied, “We’ll find him, Vegeta.”
Vegeta glanced over at Goku, smirked, and turned away just as Piccolo was arriving.
The Namekian could sense the tension in the air between the two Saiyans even from afar. He tried to gage the situation as best he could. Vegeta faced the other direction and a certain alteration in Goku’s face made Piccolo think he wished to turn away as well, but his pride wouldn’t allow it. Before Piccolo had much more time to consider the situation at hand and how it might affect the battle, Vegeta spoke to him.
He said, “Were you able to learn anything from King Kai?”
“What makes you think I’ve talked to him?” Piccolo bluffed, crossing his arms. Damn Vegeta and his intuition.
Vegeta sneered and turned to him, pointing a finger, “You damn well should have!”
Piccolo snorted, amused to be able to get a rise out of him, and replied, “I talked to him. He couldn’t locate Jeremel but he told me the whole story.”
“Oh?” Vegeta asked, now crossing his arms, and Goku perked up, listening, “Is there something you want to share?”
Piccolo chuckled and replied, “Only that for once I’m surprised you brought a ‘friend,’ too, but I’ve never liked any of your acquaintances.”
Vegeta growled lowly at him but Goku interrupted before he could respond, and he said, “Is there a way to find him, Piccolo, or maybe draw him out of hiding? I’d like to take the battle off planet if I can, but I’m afraid this is the best place to be since it’s the Earth he intends to destroy first.”
“His energy waves are different from almost every other species known, but they can be read, I’m just not sure how yet,” Piccolo explained. “When I first laid eyes on him yesterday, it wasn’t because I sensed him the way we normally do, I just suddenly had a strong feeling and it tugged my mind in his direction, and something inside showed me where he was. It was only a moment later that Gohan followed my focus, and then Goten and Trunks noticed it, too. I flew in, but he was too fast. I did see his face, and in it there was an intensity that I don’t think anything can mask for long.”
“In other words,” Vegeta expounded, “you believe we’ll sense him regardless of how hard he tries to remain concealed, based on his particular energy makeup, before he tries to strike again but only by a matter of seconds, unless we can learn how to distinguish his signal before then.”
“Yes,” Piccolo nodded at Vegeta. Goku’s head swam.
“I figured as much,” he said, but then asked, “Have you not tried to duplicate the first time you sensed him yesterday?”
“Yes, I’m not sure what triggered it, though, and in all my attempts I didn’t find anything out of the ordinary.” Piccolo watched as Vegeta brewed over that information and he thought of a question of his own, so he asked, “Your friend has some pretty interesting powers. Do you think he’d be able to sense Jeremel, based on his skill set?”
“We won’t know until he gets here.”
Goku frowned. [He’s been doing a lot of that lately.] He noticed that Gohan and Renji were on their way with Trunks and Goten. They’d just have to wait here and hope nothing happens while they were still so ill-prepared.
