When the two women arrived, Lyri stopped and stood there in shock while Bulma walked over to Kakarot.
“What’s going on? What happened to Nix?” Bulma asked.
A golden aura surrounded Nix, the dust on the ground swirling at his feet. His ebony hair was now a brilliant blonde and his dark eyes now a menacing teal. Lyri was able to finally force herself inside the training grounds, though her line of sight was glued to Nix.
“How? It’s not supposed to be real. It’s only supposed to be a legend...” she said.
Nix looked at her. “The legends are real. If you don’t believe the proof you see before you, you’re even more of an idiot than I thought you were.”
“This is so awesome!” Kakarot said as he ran up to Nix, “How’d you do it? Can you teach me?”
“Yeah, come here and I’ll start torturing your for the next ten years,” Nix told him.
Kakarot looked scared for a split second before slapping Nix on the back. “Torture. That’s a good one. You’re a funny guy, Nix. Now seriously, how do you do that?” Nix just stared at Kakarot, who started squirming under his friends gaze.
There was a low growl and they turned their attentions to Vegeta. “How dare you...first you achieve super Saiyan before me and now you have the audacity to claim that you were tortured to achieve it! I don’t believe it! It would never have happened!”
“It can happen and it did. If you don’t believe me, ask your father,” Nix told him.
Vegeta’s glared hardened. “Bullshit,” he spat out.
“Vegeta, why would he lie about something as serious as that?” Lyri asked.
“I don’t know, but have you and the other moron over there have forgotten the other part of the legend? That only royal blood holds the key to unlocking the potential to achieve super Saiyan status,” Vegeta reminded her.
“Calm down, Vegeta,” Lyri told him, “Legends aren’t factual. There might have been a misunderstanding as the story was passed down.”
“I don’t need someone like you patronizing me!” Vegeta snapped.
Lyri turned and walked away, leaving without a word. Kakarot glared at Vegeta before running after her, Bulma at his heels. Vegeta rolled his eyes and turned to Nix, but the other Saiyan was gone. Not even his ki signature remained. Vegeta’s fists clenched and he shook, barely able to contain his anger. With no one left in the training grounds, Vegeta left. He returned to his quarters, still fuming and questioning everything he was taught growing up.
Kakarot and Bulma had quickly caught up with Lyri. She slowed her walking pace and was thankful they weren’t saying anything at the moment. They walked quietly through the capital and out to Kakarot and Lyri’s home village. They reached the outskirts of the village soon afterwards and sat in the still warm sand. Bulma stared up at the night sky. A firework was occasionally being set off. Lyri hugged her knees to her chest, staring at the sand in front of her. Kakarot nudged her.
“What?” she muttered.
“Why are you making it such a big deal?” Kakarot asked, “The guy is an ass and has probably said worse to you.”
Lyri turned to glare at Kakarot. “It’s not just his comment that I’m processing, you idiot. There’s more than you could possibly understand or comprehend...” She turned back around.
“Well then talk to me about it,” Kakarot told her.
“I can’t!” Lyri snapped.
“Lyri, calm down. It’s ok. I’m sure Vegeta didn’t mean to say it like that and you know that you can tell us anything,” Bulma said.
Lyri nodded, even though she knew that she couldn’t. After a minute or two she finally said, “I know you guys are just trying to make sure I’m ok and I appreciate that but...can I have some time to myself?”
Kakarot started to object but Bulma stopped him. “Yeah,” she said and they left.
Lyri continued to sit in the sand, her mind was a confusing mess of thoughts. The occasional flash of light brightened the desert but, for the most part, she was alone in the darkness...that’s what she thought anyway...
Nix walked back towards his home village...should he continue calling it that? He had only started living there after he was released from his captors. He didn’t have anywhere to go after his release and for some reason that village was calling to him. He had come to enjoy his time there...even when he was monitoring Kakarot. Nix paused, having sensed a familiar ki signature. He walked over to her and nudged her with his boot.
“What do you want?” Lyri asked.
“Why you out here moping in the dark?” Nix asked.
“I’m not moping! I’m thinking,” Lyri told him.
“Don’t let the pint-sized prince get to you,” Nix told her.
Lyri turned to glare up at Nix. “Do you think it’s wise to insult him?”
Nix shrugged. “I don’t see why not. He’s not here to defend himself.”
Lyri rolled her eyes. “Why are you out here?”
“Just cooling off after the shit that went down,” Nix said.
“Same...” Lyri admitted.
“You’re not really bringing much to this conversation, are you?” Nix asked.
Suddenly, a medium sized ki ball was hurled towards them, hitting Lyri. Another one was sent immediately at them but Nix threw himself on top on Lyri and rolled them out of the way. Nix sat up on his knees, scanned the area and noted the ki signature. He grabbed Lyri and teleported away. Once they were inside and away from everything, he set her down on a small bed. He turned, turning on a computer behind him and typing something out. When he finished, he turned to Lyri.
“First off, are you ok?” Nix asked.
“I’m fine,” Lyri said brushing some dirt and dust off of herself.
“Good. Second, why the hell was Raditz attacking us?” he asked.
“Me,” Lyri told him.
“Ok. So why was Raditz attacking you?” Nix asked.
“Because that’s what he was hired to do,” she told him.
“What sick bastard would hire someone to kill a fellow Saiyan?” he asked.
“My blood father,” she muttered.
“Are you going to actually tell me the story or am I going to pull it out of you?” Nix asked.
“My blood father was an evil bastard that hated that I wasn’t Saiyan. Or Saiyan enough. He said I brought shame and dishonor to the Saiyan race. And instead of dirtying his own hands, he paid off a former team member to kill me instead,” Lyri told him.
“So you always have to have your guard up and keep a look out?” Nix asked, “Can relate to that.”
Lyri scoffed. “You? The great super Saiyan having to have his guard up? Worried that someone is constantly after him? Doubt it.”
“Look around, Lyri. This place, this is where I grew up. This is where I was held captive. Why do you think I was sent to Frieza’s ship? Let me tell you, it wasn’t because Frieza is oh-so friendly. It’s because the king is scared of my power and wants me dead,” Nix told her.
Lyri finally took in her surroundings. Though it was dark, she was able to see that they were in some kind of medical room. A couple regen tanks sat behind Nix, who was standing in front of a row of computers. She turned and noticed that the rest of the room was blackened and charred and whatever equipment had been there was melted, burned and scattered across the floor. An uneasy feeling overcame her as she turned back to Nix.
“This was just the infirmary. This was the place that was nice to you,” Nix told her.
“Did you do this?” Lyri asked.
“No, if I had, I doubt there’d be anything left,” Nix said, “I’m not sure if he’s still alive. He was considered a failure and as far as I know all failures were killed...”
“Who was he?” Lyri asked.
“Broly,” Nix told her.
Lyri blinked at him.
“What?” Nix asked.
“That’s not funny. He’s just a myth. Something that parents made up to scare their children,” she said.
“No,” Nix said, shaking his head, “He’s a very real person...or was, can’t say for sure, but he was the product of the king’s sick experiments. Like me. Unlike me, it caused Broly to go insane and, as you can see, destroy everything he could before they stopped him.”
Lyri stared at Nix in disbelief. “This...this really happened. You weren’t lying?”
“Wish I was,” Nix told her.
“Have you told anyone? People have to know what the king is doing! Not only is he sending our people to Frieza, a known psychotic murderer, but he was experimenting on his own subjects!” Lyri said. Without waiting for Nix’s answer she followed up with, “We have to tell Vegeta, he’d want to know.” She ran off, fumbling in the darkness until she found an exit. Wind swirled around her when she opened the door and the sun on the horizon blinded her. She shielded her eyes and stepped outside. “What the...” she muttered. The outside looked unfamiliar to her. “Where are we?”
“The other side of the world,” Nix said coming up behind her.
Lyri turned to him, the wind whipping her white hair in front of her face. She brushed it aside and looked at Nix. “What do you mean the other side of the world?”
“I mean exactly as I said. We’re on the other side of the world. Even if we left now, it’d be late when we finally arrived back at the capital,” Nix said.
“What?” Lyri yelled, her voice echoing around them, “No. No no no no no no no no. I have to be there. Fuck. Vegeta is going to kill me.”
“I reached out to Kakarot when we first got here. He’s supposed to be letting Vegeta know what happened,” Nix told her.
“Oh my gods, that doesn’t help. You know Kakarot, he going to get us in more trouble. Come on, let’s just go,” Lyri said. She tried to fly off but the wind blew her back.
“It no use. We can’t fly up here, we have to walk down,” Nix told her. He motioned for her to follow him.
“This sucks,” Lyri muttered. Both Saiyans hiked down the rocky terrain, jumping down from high cliffs when they could. When they reached the bottom, the sun was behind them and Lyri groaned. “It’s going to be sun up in the capital soon.”
“I told you it would take a long time to get back there,” Nix said.
“I know. I just don’t like that I wasn’t able to tell him myself,” she said, “Can we fly yet?”
“Wind is still too strong. We’ll have to walk until it dies down,” Nix told her.
Lyri nodded and followed him. The wind swirled around them, kicking up sand. After a while Lyri blurted out, “Would you sleep with someone you didn’t care for?”
“Is this in regards to your fake relationship with Vegeta?” Nix asked.
“Yeah,” Lyri said, “Guess you figured that out from our first conversation.”
“You weren’t really subtle about it,” Nix told her.
“Oops...” she said.
“Don’t worry. Vegeta wasn’t subtle about it either. In fact, it was him who confirmed my suspicions...accidentally anyway. Hope you guys are better actors around other people,” he said.
“I think we are. I hope so, anyway,” Lyri said.
“The only people you need to convince are the king and the person who’s wanted Vegeta since he was a child,” Nix said. When Lyri looked at him questioningly, Nix elaborated, “Frieza.”
“Eww. That asshole wants Vegeta? Never gonna happen,” she said.
“Frieza may seem like a non-threat but he’s a powerful foe who will take you out before you know what’s happening,” Nix warned.
“Yes, I know,” Lyri told him, “Even if anything like that were to happen, I don’t think Vegeta would be that upset.”
“I think Vegeta cares even more than he realizes,” Nix told her.
“Why do you say that?” she asked.
“The way he’s been acting isn’t like him. He’s not his normal asshole, pompous self. It’s odd. It’s like the facade slips a bit but he’s almost instantly back to trying not to care,” Nix explained.
“I haven’t noticed,” Lyri said, “That’s why I asked that question.”
“What do you want out of this arrangement?” Nix asked.
“I don’t want anything,” Lyri said, “...that’s not true. If anything, I’d hope that I could stay with him. Which sounds ridiculous, because most people would want the power or wealth or social status that comes with being a royal’s intended or mate. I could care less about that, though.”
“So you want a real relationship with him?” Nix asked.
“Which is just setting myself up for heartbreak because Vegeta has made it very clear that he doesn’t want any type of relationship,” she said.
Nix was quiet for a while. “Do you know why he doesn’t want a mate?” Lyri shook her head. “His reasoning makes sense, to a point. He wants to get the Saiyans out of Frieza’s control. Vegeta knows that it’s going to be a fight to get us out from Frieza’s grasp and he doesn’t want to take a mate only to leave them behind mourning him should he not live through that fight.”
“Like you said, his reasoning make sense and I understand where he’s coming from but...he has to know that whoever he chooses will follow and help him in anyway that they can. At least, I would,” Lyri told him.
“I think he’s realizing that but he’s still having trouble accepting that,” Nix told her.
“So do I just let him figure his shit out on his own or what?” Lyri asked.
“You know him. He has to come to terms with things on his own. It’ll take longer if you try to force it,” Nix told her.
“Yeah, I know,” she agreed.
The wind continued to blow fiercely around them. Lyri sighed and glanced up at the darkened sky. “Hope Kakarot was able to get the message to Vegeta. I swear if he fucked this up, I’m gonna beat the snot outta him.”
Meanwhile...Kakarot was dashing around the palace looking for Vegeta. “Where is here?” he asked himself. He tried to open the link to Vegeta’s scouter but got nothing but static. “His scouter is off...” He tried sensing him but there were too many ki signatures in the palace today that he couldn’t pinpoint Vegeta. Sighing, he turned on his scouter and was able to pick up Vegeta’s reading easily. “Why didn’t I think of that earlier?” he asked himself before running off. He was stopped outside the throne room by a couple of guards. “Hi guys! I need to get in there.”
“And I need you to turn around and go away,” one of the guards said, “The royals are welcoming Lord Frieza as we speak.”
“Oh, well I’ll just be a minute. I really need to talk to Prince Vegeta,” Kakarot said before trying to walk through the door again.
“What part of go away don’t you understand?” the guard asked.
“Please? It’s important!” Kakarot told him.
“And what’s so important that it can’t wait until later?” the guard asked.
“It’s about the prince's intended!” Kakarot exclaimed.
The guard rolled his eyes but motioned for Kakarot to stay where he was. The guard disappeared into the throne room and returned a minute later with Vegeta.
“This had better be important,” Vegeta said, glaring at the younger Saiyan.
“It is! Nix told me to tell you that him and Lyri aren’t going to be at the banquet tonight,” Kakarot said.
Vegeta inhaled deeply so he wouldn’t hit Kakarot. “Did he say why?”
“Yeah,” Kakarot said.
“Well? Why?” Vegeta asked.
Kakarot thought for a minute. “I forget why.”
Vegeta growled. “God, you’re a fucking idiot. Give me your scouter so I can call them.”
“They don’t have their scouters,” Kakarot said.
“Then how did Nix call you?” Vegeta asked.
“He didn't. I got a messge on my scouter's screen from him,” Kakarot said.
Vegeta growled. Of course Nix would use some out dated way to get in touch. He turned to the guards behind him. “Take this idiot and go look for my intended. Do not come back here until you have her.” The guards nodded and left, Kakarot leaving with them. Vegeta inhaled deeply once again and tried to push his worry aside as he walked back into the throne room.
