Broly looked up from staring into the lake where Ba had once lived. Where he’d once been his friend before his sire Paragus had done the most awful thing. And he was glad he was gone. That Saiyan had been no parent of his. Not when he’d treated Broly not as a son, but as an animal, as a thing to be controlled. A weapon to hurt others with, to try and take what was not rightfully his. Because Brolys' power did not belong to him.
He smiled upon seeing who it was that had come to visit him on the small planet, Vampa. While it had little going for it, until he could get his hair-trigger temper under control it was best to remain there so as not to harm anyone else. Not when he didn’t want to.
“Kakarot. It is good to see you.”
Kakarots' eyes wrinkled as he smiled. He almost always looked so happy. Except when the battle got serious and he could not afford to lose his concentration. Not that his smiles didn’t throw others off.
“I’m glad to see you too, buddy. I hope you’re doing well.”
He smiled again and nodded. “I’m well. Lemo and Cheelai are doing good too.”
“I’m glad.”
“Did you want to train?” Broly asked, for usually that was what they did when Kakarot appeared before him on Vampa. Unless it was to hand over another capsule filled with food and other items one could not obtain on the planet he dwelled upon.
Kakarot scratched the back of his head with a tilted grin. “Not this time, big guy.” His tail wagged behind him in excitement.
Brolys' eyes zeroed in on the movement. “Your… tail.”
The Earth raised Saiyan chuckled. “Oh, right! I got my tail back. You can too if you want.”
“I can?” He looked from Kakarots' tail and over his shoulder. He missed his tail. It had been like a friend, always there for him until it had been unceremoniously chopped off by his own sire. He didn’t want to think of that monster and what he might have done to the one who had helped bring Broly into the world. Paragus had been nothing more than a glory hound chasing power so that he could become the ruler. Even if it meant using someone else, like Broly, without their explicit consent on the matter.
He shuddered to think of all that could have happened if not for Kakarot and Vegeta stepping in to help him.
Broly could still have been trapped without being able to live his own life or make his own friends. He’d have been forced to do things that he did not truly have the stomach for. Except when he lost his mind in that awful state he entered when enraged. Kakarot had been helping him to hone and channel those feelings into something more positive and trying to find a way so that he did not lose his hold on his sanity.
“Yeah. You just need to close your eyes and think about having your tail again. Then it’ll grow back.”
“Is it safe?” He had to ask, because he had heard about the Oozaru form. He’d rather not risk hurting his friends.
“Well you don’t have to get it back if you don’t want to Broly. But your tail is important. Vegeta told me why too, it all has to do with Alpha’s and Beta’s and being able to form mate bonds and have babies with ones mate if one wants to.”
Broly turned his gaze back to Kakarot, eyes wide. “Really?” His heart beat against his chest. The thought of a mate… he knew that it meant, but he could really hurt someone. “I don’t know. I might hurt whoever I bond with.”
“Well, you can wait till you’re ready. I can still train you before you go seeking a mate.”
He had to ask and leaned over Kakarot to whisper against his ear, quietly “Do you have one?”
Kakrot chuckled and swiped at his ear. “Broly, that tickles!”
Broly blinked and chuckled, “Sorry.”
Just then they both turned their heads as a surge of energy neared.
Vegeta glowered at them and pushed himself between Kakarot and Broly. His canines snapped and he pushed Broly back.
Broly stepped back, brows furrowed, the momentum unexpected.
Vegetas' tail rose up, the hair bristling as he growled. “Keep away from my Kakarot.” His chest rose and fell.
“Ve-vegeta?” Kakarot called out his name, brows furrowed, bottom lip worried between his teeth, his tail limp and dragged against the ground.
Vegeta moved his tail behind him and brushed against Kakarots' lips. “I will not allow another to take you from me. Not even Broly. I will fight if I have to.”
Broly cocked his head. “Why do we have to fight?”
“Because we are Alpha’s and you getting so close to my intended mate is a challenge.”
“How do you know I’m an Alpha?” Broly asked as he plucked at the pelt of his dearly missed friend, Ba.
Vegeta sputtered and his back stiffened. “I… don’t know.”
Kakarot moved to Vegetas' side and took one of his hands, entwining their fingers and wrapping his tail around the older Saiyan’s tail. “You didn’t know I was a beta until I told you.”
“But look at him!” Vegeta shook his hand up and down in the larger Saiyan’s direction.
Broly didn’t know what to think. But he didn’t feel like courting Kakarot, nor had he ever thought of it in regard to anyone. Saiyan or not. But it was perhaps because he didn’t have his tail. It had been removed when he’d been but a young cub. Or maybe he had no interest at all. He didn’t think he’d know for certain until his tail returned to him, but he was too afraid of hurting others to want it back no matter how he longed for it.
Vegeta turned his head, “Tch! I don’t know of any way to check.”
“Maybe when we get to Vegetasei someone will know?”
Brolys' eyes widened. “Vegetasei?”
Kakarot grinned, “Yeah. Sorry, I didn’t get a chance to tell ya. I made some wishes and the planet is back. And when I set foot there some Saiyan's will return to life.”
“Not Paragus?” He gulped. He didn’t want to remember. He’d been free for only a handful of years and it felt far less than that.
“Not if ya don’t want him to be. I can make sure with my thoughts that certain members of our people don’t return and that some do. But the number is limited. I don’t think more than five-hundred, probably only a hundred or less.”
Vegeta leaned into Kakarot and Broly could see something between them. A spark of ki? No. Something else. It was weaving between the pair, centering on their tails like two different energies tying together round and round.
“Can you see that?” He pointed to their tails.
The two looked.
Vegeta smirked, “Kakarot, do you even know what you’re suggesting we do with your tail?”
Kakarots' eyes widened, his mouth agape. “Wh-what!?” With flushed face he untangled his tail from Vegetas'.
The colors remained, twining together, like tiny ropes. Twisting more and pulling the strings - for that's what it looked like - closer together. And yet the two were not bound that they could not step away from each other.
“You see it?” He pointed at what he saw. It wasn’t their tails but it was attached to their tails.
Kakarot stared at Broly and then where he pointed. “What’cha pointing at Broly?”
Vegeta stared at the spot as well. “What do you see?”
With them both staring at him waiting for an answer he gulped. What if he was seeing things that just weren’t there? Ever since he’d been freed of the horrid monster holding his leash and holding him hostage against his will he’d seen things. Things that neither Lemo nor Cheelai could see. And now he saw something that Kakarot and Vegeta could not.
Kakarot moved to pat his arm. “It’s okay Broly. Whatever it is, we’ll help ya. Won’t we Vegeta?” He turned his head and looked to the older Saiyan, the crown prince of their race.
Vegeta crossed his arms and glared at Broly though Broly had done nothing he could think of to gain his ire.
Then he looked at where Kakarot’s hand was, trying to sooth him.
While he was not interested in Kakarot in that way, it was interesting to see the expression on Vegeta’s countenance.
Just once, he wanted to be a bit cheeky. Or whatever it was that had him raising his hand to brush the back of his knuckles against Kakarot’s cheek and down along his neck.
Kakarot’s eyes widened and he leaped back, face flushed with color.
Vegeta pushed Kakarot behind him and charged at Broly, aiming his elbow at his solar plexus.
Broly used his hand to grab him by the elbow. “I am not trying to take him from you, Prince Vegeta.”
Vegeta growled, his breathing coming in ragged breaths due to being incensed, enraged, that anyone would dare to lay a hand on his Kakarot. Especially in such an intimate way.
“That touch is a known challenge from Alpha to Alpha.”
Broly’s eyes widened and he felt his ears warm. “I… I was not aware.”
“It doesn’t matter. You issued a challenge and I will not back down from it!”
Broly gulped. He didn’t think he would lose if he took up the challenge, which he had accidentally issued. “But… I am not interested in Kakarot as a mate.”
“Then you will kneel and admit defeat by kissing the boot of the one you challenged.”
“What?”
“It is tradition . The culture of our people.”
“But, you did not defeat me.”
“It doesn’t matter. If you do not want Kakarot, it is the only way we can both get out of the challenge.”
Kakarot glanced from one to the other. He grabbed hold of his tail, fingers fidgeting with nerves.
“Vegeta. Broly. Can’t we wait until we’re on Vegetasei? Broly could be a Beta. I…I think I know a way to figure it out before then…,” his voice got smaller and smaller as he spoke.
Broly had never seen him so nervous, but then neither of them had been in the situation they found themselves in. Perhaps he should not have tried to get a rise out of Vegeta just to see what he’d do. Because he was curious. And he had heard about what curiosity led to - at least for a cat.
Vegeta grit his teeth and turned to Kakarot. He reached up and grabbed the Saiyan in the orange gi and pulled him down to swipe his tongue along Kakarot’s cheek and down the side of his neck. “No one gets to touch you like that, but me, Kakarot.”
Broly watched the display and saw again the strands of color tie in yet another knot. Getting tighter.
“I wish you could see it,” he murmured as he pet the pelt of Ba he wore. As a reminder of his friend and all the hardship he had suffered at the hands of Paragus.
Kakarot himself was as red as a tomato. “Ve-Ge-Ta!”
Vegeta smirked, “You might be embarrassed, but I can see how excited you are. You really can’t control your tail can you?”
“What do you mean?”
Vegeta shook his head, “Not now.” He turned to look at Broly. “Now, again, what do you see?”
“Strands of color. Attached to your tails. Tied together. Forming more knots.”
The prince’s eyes widened. His mouth a wide ‘o’. “Alpha’s… can’t see that.”
“What?” Broly asked, because it made no sense to him.
“Only Beta’s with the Soulmate’s Gaze can see that.”
“Soulmate’s Gaze?” Broly and Kakarot echoed.
Vegeta nodded. “As rare, if not more rare than a Super Saiyajin. It may be the connection we’ve been missing - why your transformation is like it is, Broly. You were not trained in the way of our people and so the ki that is meant for your gaze twisted itself into your transformation. If not for that you’d not lose your mind. You need to be where you can use your gaze.”
Broly’s eyes got larger and larger the more he heard. If there was even the slimmest hope of finally being able to control himself in that form, maybe he’d be able to get his tail back. And figure out if he had any interest in a mate at all, or if perhaps he only wanted to help others. He always liked to see them smile, especially those who had a harder time letting go and finding some smidgen even of happiness.
“So, I’m not seeing things?”
“No,” Vegeta stated, “but this means we need to get to Vegetasei even sooner now that we are aware of this. Your mind will warp even outside of your transformation if you are not among your people able to sense their connections. And because you exist at all, the fertility of our people will be quadrupled compared to when there is none who have the Soulmate’s Gaze.”
Kakarot had been quiet and staring at the ground as he listened. Then he lifted his head and stared at Vegeta. “Wait. If Broly has the Soulmate’s Gaze, does that mean… we’re soulmates Vegeta?”
“It only means there is a potential Kakarot.”
“Oh,” Kakarot’s shoulders and tail drooped.
Vegeta sighed and pulled Kakarot to him by the waist. “But with our threads tying together… It indicates that we are.”
Kakarot’s lips twisted into a pout. “But ya were so mean before. If we were always soulmates…,” he trailed off.
“I know, Kakarot. But the culprit is gone. Frieza is gone. My father… well he was in part to blame too, going against the decree of a god.”
Broly shuddered at the mention of the gods. He was not interested in having anything to do with them. Not when it had brought destruction and the near complete extinction of their people. Not that Broly had known much of Saiyans and their culture. Paragus had certainly never taught him other than to try and get him to hate. And yet, in his loneliness, he had not fully become the tool his sire had hoped him to be. At least Kakarot would not bring him back.
“I would like to go to Vegetasei,” Broly said, even though he knew he was interrupting them. Then again it looked as though neither of them knew what else to say and were content just to stare into each other's eyes, as if they could reach one another's souls that way.
Vegeta and Kakarot both looked at him.
Kakarot had that grin on his countenance that had Broly smiling. It was just so contagious he found, when that particularly Saiyan smiled. It wasn’t sinister, nor hate filled, but genuine and friendly.
Vegeta though, his expression remained neutral, except he also always looked angry, haggard, as if the world rested entirely on his shoulders. Broly had once wondered why that was, but then had been told story upon story from Kakarot, even if it were second hand. Vegeta had suffered a lot. Perhaps more than any of them had. All because of monsters like Frieza and the fools who upset the gods.
“We can’t leave you behind anyway. Not with the Soulmate Gaze. If anyone outside of Vegetasei finds out, you’ll be a target.”
“Does it work on non Saiyans?”
“No, but there is a market for your kinds blood and flesh. You’ll be safer on Vegetasei.”
“I can take care of myself,” Broly pointed out, because even these two had a difficult time defeating him without fusing.
“There are other ways than hand-to-hand combat. They could get you when you’re least expecting it. When you’re sleeping. Drug you, and worse. I don’t think anyone wants to know what worse is.”
Kakarot gulped.
Broly shuddered. “Worse than Paragus?”
“Yes,” Vegeta hissed.
“We won't force ya to go though, Broly. If ya wanna stay on Vampa that’s your choice.”
“Kakarot,” Vegeta glowered.
“Nope! Broly gets to choose Vegeta.”
Broly smiled at how Kakarot always knew just what to say when it came to him. He had taken note that some thought him to be without intelligence. He might not have book smarts, but he had intelligence that he hid behind a veneer. Whether that was deliberate or not, who could say. Perhaps not even Kakarot himself knew.
“Of course, Kakarot. Still it would behoove Broly to choose going to Vegetasei.”
“I do wish to go to Vegetasei. Not for safety, but I… want to know what our home was - is - like. Can Lemo and Cheelai come with us?”
Kakarot glanced at Vegeta. “There’s room, isn’t there?”
“Tch. If not, I’m sure the woman,” he cleared his throat, “Bulma,” he said so that Broly knew whom he spoke of, “will have a larger ship for us if need be. But it’s only two extra and the ship we have is large enough. We just need to see if Tarble wants to come along too or not.”
Broly smiled and pet the pelt of Ba again, it felt self-soothing as he felt his energy zapping him beneath his skin in excitement. Maybe this was a good thing. He hoped it was. At least he did not run the risk of upsetting the Alpha Prince.
Although he did mention something, “If I am a Beta, are you not afraid I might try and catch the attention of Vegeta, Kakarot?”
Kakarot’s mouth gaped open and then he growled, his tail wrapping around Vegeta as he pulled the prince’s back up against his chest.
“Mine!”
Broly watched Kakarot’s tail twitch erratically behind him, all bushed up like an angry startled cat.
Vegeta turned in Kakarot’s arms and he smirked, “Possessive are we, Kakarot?”
The Earth raised Saiyan’s eyes widened and his face reddened.
Broly found the sight interesting. He closed his eyes and inhaled. Their scents danced on the breeze, tickled his nostrils and he felt a jolt through him. And he spoke without meaning to. It didn’t even sound like his own voice and the words, he didn’t know where they had come from.
Everything looked tinged in red as he opened his eyes.
Vegeta and Kakarot gasped, each one trying to push the other behind them.
The voice that came out of Broly’s mouth chuckled. Deep and dark.
“Chosen of the Ancient Gods, soon the season shall begin and you shall herald in the first wave of a generation. But beware not all is juicy meat and pleasured bodies.”
Broly fell to his knees, suddenly as if he were without breath and his stomach clenched, his body shaking. “Wh-what was that!?” He gasped for air between each syllable.
Kakarot clung to Vegeta.
Vegeta instead of pushing Kakarot away, held him close.
Broly was still not used to them not being at each other’s throats.
The prince tried his best to answer. “Broly, because you have the Soulmate’s Gaze… sometimes one of the Saiyajin’s gods, or one of their emissaries can possess you at will. Usually only on Vegetasei, or the more ancient Sadala.”
Broly shuddered, “I don’t like it!” He hadn’t liked being controlled by Paragus and so the thought of anything or anyone controlling him again was not something he wanted. And it had been horrible. Painful after, and disturbing during.
“I’m afraid you have little choice in the matter, Broly.”
Kakarot frowned at Vegeta. “Why? Broly doesn’t like it, so why should they get to do whatever they want?”
“They’re gods Kakarot.”
“So? We’ve fought gods before!”
“I will not go up against the gods of Vegetasei that created our people. And I have no idea where their physical forms are. If they even have them at all.”
“They gotta have them, Vegeta. Even Zeno-sama has a form and he probably created them too.”
Broly sighed, “It’s fine, Kakarot. I’ll figure out something. Maybe I can find a way to talk to them so they don’t do that without asking me?”
“Well, okay, if you’re sure, Broly.”
“I don’t know if I can be sure of anything, but I don’t think there’s another choice. And maybe they can even help me. I just… don’t want them using my body.”
“Not like I want to use Kakarot’s,” Vegeta interjected.
Kakarot gasped, face and ears red, “Vegeta!” He gave him a shove and moved away.
Vegeta watched Kakarot eyes dark, mouth curved into a smirk. But it soon vanished as he turned his gaze to Broly. “That sounded an ominous message at the end. The rest, it just means that when we get to Vegetasei many of the females and betas are going to enter their season so there will be a baby boom.”
Broly gulped. “Does that include me?” He didn’t want to go into season. He had no mate and as yet had no desire for one. But if there was such a thing as soulmates, maybe it was because he was waiting for them, whoever they were. If they existed. If they were among the dead wished back to life. Or maybe they had died so long ago that Broly would never get the chance to meet them. It was not something on which he wished to dwell.
“Only those with tails go into season, or into rut, Broly.”
“Then… I will wait for my tail. I need to get control of my transformations and my mind during them first.” Plus if everyone else was preoccupied with sex, then he was sure someone needed to have the ability to keep an eye on the planet, a lookout for trouble. And he had not missed the part about them to beware of something and yet given no direct information as to what that something might be.
“Wise of you,” Vegeta praised him and then turned to where Kakarot stood. “I think we should teleport to where Tarble is now.” He looked over his shoulder back at Broly. “Be ready when we return, whether Lemo and Cheelai decide to accompany you or not. Kakarot will IT us each to Earth where we’ll board the ship once we have all those going and all the provisions necessary.”
Broly nodded. “I’ll go speak with Lemo and Cheelai now then. I await your return. I just hope… that the gods of our ancestors don’t do that again,” he shuddered. No one should be able to take him over like that. He thought he’d been free of enslavement as his sire Paragus had enslaved him. He did not want to be a vessel of the gods forced to do their bidding whenever they felt like it. He didn’t care that he was the one with the Soulmate’s Gaze, not if it meant his freedom was lost to him and he could not be who he wanted to be, who he was meant to be.
Kakarot smiled. “Everything will work out, Broly, you’ll see. And if I have to, I’ll kick another gods butt just so they don’t mess with ya, okay buddy?”
Broly smiled, sometimes wondering where the Earth raised Saiyan’s confidence, his cockyness, came from. Maybe that was the reason he was connected to Vegeta so tightly with those wisps of invisible thread touching both their tails.
“I hope it doesn’t come to that. Thank you, Kakarot.”
Vegeta grabbed hold of Kakarot’s hand. “It better not. Kakarot does not need to be fighting more gods.” He glanced up at his soulmate, “I can’t risk you risking yourself, Kakarot. Not when we’ve finally truly found each other, after its taken us both so long.”
Broly did not wish to get in between the pair of them. He had no interest in their lovers' quarrel and he needed to find Cheelai and Lemo, to ask them both if they would be willing to go to Vegetasei with him.
Behind him, he heard the pair.
Kakarot pouted. “Come on Vegeta. Who else are we supposed to spar with and get even stronger?”
“Do you know how close our Universe itself has come to extinction because of your penchant for insulting the gods?”
“I’m not trying to insult them! I just like to spar, don’t you?”
Broly heard one last sound before turning and heading to the cliffside caves where he found Cheelai and Lemo.
“Tch,” Vegeta’s voice echoed, but other than that Broly could no longer hear what was being said. And then their ki felt far, far away.
