"Vegeta! No!"
Giana screamed as a purple blast flew from his hands.
"Look out!"
She fell to the ground barely missing the blast. She crawled toward him as he lay on the ground.
"You're hurt."
She sobbed, pulling his head into her lap.
"Give me the Saiyan or I will destroy the whole planet."
Frieza's taunting tone shook her.
"Run, Giana."
Vegeta managed.
"Get out of here. He only wants me."
"I won’t leave you here alone."
She pressed her forehead to his.
"I can't let you do this."
"Please, baby? Get away from here."
He kissed her hard.
"Come on, Ana!"
Yamcha wrapped his arms around her waist.
"We have to get out of here!"
"No!"
She reached for Vegeta as the Z fighter picked her up.
"Let me go!"
"I love you."
Vegeta muttered, his dark eyes still on hers.
"Never forget that."
The ground around them shook. A bright light consumed them as Yamcha hovered over her, shading her from the blinding light.
"Vegeta!"
Giana screamed, sitting straight up in her bed. She looked around the dark room and at the clock.
"Shit. Five A.M? Goku will be here soon."
She brushed her fingers through her dark hair and pushed the blankets off of her. She hadn't seen Vegeta in two weeks. He had avoided her since they had, had lunch together. He was stand-offish even as they ate. She grabbed her cell phone on the night stand. Twelve missed calls and six missed messages.
"Oh no."
She scrolled through the messages.
10:45 P.M.
"Where are you? You were supposed to be here at 7."
12:29 A.M.
"I take it you aren't coming. I wish you would have let me know. The door is open. If you're hungry, I made you dinner. It's on the table if you show up."
1:06 A.M.
"This is stupid, A. I haven't seen you in 2 weeks and the one night you swore you'd be here, you don't show. I know you're home. I talked to Bulma. Is it something I did or said?"
2:18 A.M.
"I can't sleep. I was looking forward to our date. I had something I needed to talk to you about but I guess it will have to wait on the back burner, just like I have been. I miss you, A. I really do. I love you. I hope you know that."
4:31 A.M.
"I still can't sleep. What happened? Are we over? I need something from you. We have had 1 phone call in 2 weeks and it lasted for 10 minutes. I'm just glad to have friends that are willing to hang out when my girlfriend ditches me. Thanks."
She cried as she typed back.
"I do miss you. I love you, Yamcha. I hope to see you soon. Been busy with Goku. I'm so sorry. :("
When Vegeta started avoiding her, Goku picked up where he had left off in her training. She had almost learned to control her power level but could no longer push herself into "Super Saiyan" status. Ever since that day, she had tried a hard as she could to push herself to no avail. She sighed as she tugged on her clothes and boots.
Her phone vibrated again. She picked it up.
5:11 A.M.
"We need to talk."
"I know. We will. I fell asleep last night after training. I love you."
She text back.
She sighed and shoved her phone in her pocket. She wiped her cheeks. This was not what she had in mind when she had decided to train as hard as she could. The plan was never to lose her boyfriend.
She stretched before jogging out of the door and down the driveway.
Her phone vibrated again.
5:27 A.M.
"Please come over tonight so we can talk."
"I will try."
5:33 A.M.
"Dammit Ana! Just 1 night and I'm only asking for 10 minutes! You know what? Fuck it! At least my friends are here when I need them!"
She shoved her phone back in her pocket, unwilling to argue this early in the morning.
Vegeta watched her from the patio as she tried, over and over, to raise her power level, to go Super Saiyan again. She could almost hit her mark every time but something was keeping her from tipping her inner scale.
"What is wrong with you?"
Vegeta whispered.
"Do it!"
Her body shimmered. Her hair faded from black to blonde and back again.
"Come on!"
The ground vibrated. She screamed, trying with everything she had. She shimmered again.
"Dammit!"
She screamed, kicking the ground the golden aura around her faded.
"Son of a bitch!"
She punched a nearby tree, splitting it in half.
Vegeta shook his head as he walked away.
"Stupid girl. Frustration will not help you."
"Vegeta. Have you seen Ana?"
Goku smiled.
Vegeta motioned over his shoulder at the Saiyan woman.
"She is throwing quite the tantrum."
He chuckled.
"She can get to the level she needs but cannot hold it for more than a few seconds."
Goku's shoulders dropped with a sigh.
"I know. I've been trying to get her to control it but she can't. She's holding back. I can feel it. She's a lot stronger than we all think. She just can't tap into it."
Vegeta shrugged before retiring to the gravity room.
"Ana!"
Goku shouted as he jogged after her.
"What?"
She growled.
"Easy! Relax! We will get there! You're doing awesome."
He tried to encourage her.
"I can't fucking do it, Goku!"
She shouted, clearly frustrated.
"I've tried and tried and I can't fucking do it!"
"You will! You just have to relax!"
He tried to calm her.
"I can't! I don't know how!"
She let out a loud scream.
"Fuck it! I'm not doing this anymore! I need a break!"
Goku watched her with sad eyes.
"You aren't a quitter."
"I feel like I'm wasting my time, Goku! I did it once and can get close but I can't do it again! My time could be better spent with Yamcha, who I haven't seen in two weeks, or doing something else like, settling down, getting married, anything!"
Her body shook as tears welled in her eyes.
"I just can't do it."
Goku squeezed her shoulder.
"Why don't you go over to Yamcha's. Spend some time with him. Relax. I'll be here, ready to help you, when you're ready to come back."
"Really?"
She smiled a sad smile.
"Yeah! Go wake his lazy ass up and have fun."
Goku smiled.
"Thank you!"
She flung her arms around his neck.
"Thank you so much!"
Giana darted into the air.
"She will never learn if you keep taking it so easy on her."
Vegeta crossed his arms, staring intently at Goku.
"She lost the love of her life, Vegeta."
He scowled at the prince.
"I won't let her lose Yamcha too."
Goku disappeared, darting in the same direction as the Saiyan woman.
"Cheap shot!"
Vegeta screamed toward Kakarot before soaring toward him.
"Ana! Wait!"
Yamcha bolted from the bed after her.
"Wait!"
"Don't.."
She managed, yanking her arm away from him.
"Wait! I can explain!"
Yamcha stepped in front of her, fumbling with the sheet around his hips.
"I don't want to hear it. Move!"
She tried to slow her spinning head. Tears swelled in her eyes.
"Baby... I'm so sorry! This wasn't meant to happen."
He cupped her face.
"She came over because I was upset. We had too much to drink. It just happened."
He grabbed the ring off of the counter.
"I was going to purpose last night, Ana! See?"
He opened the box.
"I want to spend the rest of my life with you! You have to believe me!"
"When you said you wanted to talk, I expected to work through this or for you to dump me."
She managed.
"I didn't think you meant that you wanted to tell me you are fucking your 'friend'!"
She tried to push past him.
"Move!"
"Let her go."
The blonde leaned against the bedroom door frame.
Yamcha's heart broke as he watched her cry.
"I'm so sorry. Can we talk later?"
He begged.
"I don't know."
She shoved past him and yanked the door open.
"Hey! Giana, is it?"
The blonde woman smiled at her.
"You forgot this."
She tossed some of Giana's clothes, that she had left at Yamcha's, to her feet.
The dark haired woman lifted into the sky and made her way back to Capsule Corp.
The gravel under her feet crunched as she landed. Krillin, Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, and Bulma sat at the picnic table, enjoying the sunshine and breakfast.
"A?" Krillin watched her. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah."
She managed, never looking at him.
"You're back earlier than expected."
Goku tried to catch her attention.
All she could so was nod.
Goku elbowed Vegeta.
"Go!"
"What?"
He rubbed his bicep.
"Why do I have to go?"
"Because!"
Bulma snapped.
"She's your ex! Maybe she needs a friendly face? I bet Yamcha dumped her."
She frowned.
"That would be the stupidest thing he's ever done."
Krillin shook his head.
"I doubt it."
Vegeta said confidently.
"Look at her! No one in their right mind would give that up. Especially not someone that will never have another shot at a woman like that."
They all fell silent. Their eyes watched him as the irony of the situation clicked. He sighed.
"Fine! If she cries on me, I will send her out here to you all!"
He shoved himself away from the table and jogged after her.
"Go away, Vegeta. I'm not in the mood for you to take shots at me alright?"
She wiped her nose and disappeared into her bedroom.
"Ana."
He pushed the door open.
She buried her face into her hands as she fell on to the bed. She sobbed hard.
"What happened?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
His heart broke for her. She was hurting and hurting bad.
"I'm here if you want to talk."
He sat down next to her on the bed.
"I'm not sure what to do now..."
"What is wrong with me?"
She looked at him. Her nose and cheeks were red. Tears flowed down from her sad, pale green, eyes.
"What?"
He squinted at her.
"I was in love with you for seven years and when the chance came to be done with me, you took it. You never came for me the way you promised. I waited for you. I've been in love with you for seventeen years and you hate me. I was finally able to find a guy that I cared about and..."
She took a deep breath through her tears.
"He said he was glad his friend was there for him when I ditched him."
She shook her head. She couldn't have been more angry at herself than she was in that moment.
"This is all my fault. I should have gone last night."
She looked into Vegeta's dark eyes.
"He was going to ask me to marry him."
"What would you have said?"
He regretted asking her as soon as the question left his mouth. He looked down at his shifting hands, nervously.
"Idiot!"
His head screamed.
"I don't know, Vegeta!"
She wiped her cheeks.
"I really don't know."
Her shoulders shook as she cried harder.
"I guess it doesn't matter now..."
She shook her head.
"The woman he was with this morning can deal with him."
Vegeta wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close.
"This shouldn't have happened to you, Ana."
He kissed her temple.
"You don't deserve this."
He squeezed her tight.
"You don't deserve any of this nor did you deserve what I did to you."
"It would be wise not to go in there, Yamcha!"
Krillin warned.
"She's upstairs with Vegeta. I don't know what you did but I'm assuming it was bad by the way she was crying. Whatever it was, I'm betting Vegeta knows by now and will not hesitate to kill you if he thinks it's justified."
He ignored his friend and jogged up the stairs. He pushed open her bedroom door.
"Giana. I..."
He froze, examining the scene in front of him. Vegeta's arms were wrapped tightly around Giana. Their legs were intertwined. His jaw was pressed against her forehead. Her arms wrapped around his waist. Her cheeks and nose were still pink. They hadn't been asleep long.
Yamcha leaned over her.
"Ana?"
He whispered.
He reached down and stroked her hair.
"Ana."
He whispered again.
Her green eyes slowly cracked open.
"What do you want?"
She never let go of Vegeta.
"Can we talk?"
He whispered, glancing at the still sleeping Saiyan prince next to her.
"Don't even think about it."
Vegeta growled.
"I don't need a good excuse to rip you in half but I'm sure I can come up with something."
"I don't want to talk."
She tucked her nose under Vegeta's chin.
"Leave. I'm sure your girlfriend needs help moving her things in."
"You heard her."
Vegeta glared at Yamcha, never moving from Giana's hold on him.
"This has nothing to do with you, Vegeta! Stay out of this!"
Yamcha glared back.
"A, please get up? We need to talk."
He tugged her arm, pulling it from Vegeta's grasp.
In a flash, Yamcha was against the wall with Vegeta's fingers tight around his neck.
"Never touch her! Do you fucking understand me?"
He slammed Yamcha hard into the drywall.
"Do you hear me?"
"Vegeta! Stop!"
Giana sprang from the bed.
"Please, stop!"
She shoved herself between Vegeta and Yamcha. The Z fighter fell to the floor and gasped for air.
"Stay."
She caught Vegeta's arm as he turned to leave the room.
"What happened?"
Goku looked around, trying to take in the situation.
"Nothing."
Vegeta pulled away from her and left the room.
Yamcha still sat on the floor, holding his throat.
"He's fucking crazy!"
He managed.
"He tried to kill me!"
"If he wanted to kill you..."
She bent down, her eyes glared into his intently.
"He would have killed you."
He watched her as she left the room. What was she doing? Where was she going? He wanted to talk this out. He wanted to fix his wrong doings. Why was she walking away from him?
"Ana!"
He shouted through his raspy voice, still trying to catch his breath.
"What happened?"
Goku asked again.
"He's a fucking nut job, Goku! He grabbed me by the throat and slammed me against the wall because I wanted to talk to my girlfriend!"
"Wait..."
Goku helped him up.
"You guys didn't break up?"
"We haven't gotten to talk yet! That's what I came here to do!"
Yamcha brushed the drywall out of his hair.
"I don't think you'll get to talk to her while Vegeta is around, my friend. Whatever you did to upset her must have been pretty bad. Come on."
He motioned to the door.
"Let's go eat."
He spun around.
"What? What do you want? Go back to your boyfriend! He came all this way to talk, go talk!"
His sarcastic tone shot at her like daggers.
"But I..."
"Go!"
He shouted before slipping into his room and slamming the door.
Her blood began to boil. She kicked his door open, startling him.
"What are you doing?"
He shouted.
"Stop walking away from me! Why do you do this? Why do you constantly walk away from me? Are you scared of me or something? I just don't..."
"Terrified!"
Vegeta interrupted her.
"What?"
Her eyebrows knitted together. That was not the response she expected.
"I am fucking terrified of you, Giana!"
He ran his fingers through his hair. His frustration was obvious. He rested his hands on his hips and turned to look out of the window.
"You scare the hell out of me. Not because of anything you've done or anything you've said..."
He turned to look at her.
"Because of the way you make me feel!"
His booming voice shook her as he shouted. His heart raced. His palms began to sweat. A lump caught in his throat.
"You hate me, Vegeta! That's the only thing about you I know as a fact, anymore! You're not the man I remember and that's not a terrible thing but..."
She sighed.
"It's not a good thing either. Is that what you're saying?"
He folded his arms.
"No!"
She shouted.
"You're just different! That's all!"
"And I like myself this way! I'm strong, confident, and proud of who I am! I am the prince of all Saiyans!"
His chest rose, proudly.
"Trust me, Vegeta! We know!"
She shook her head.
"You remind us all the time!"
"Let me finish!"
He screamed. The window rattled.
She stared at him, wide-eyed. He had never yelled at her like this.
"I will not change for anyone! I am who I am and no one can change that!"
His eyebrows narrowed at her.
"Except you."
"Me?"
Her confused expression almost made him laugh.
"You, Giana. You have always had a way of making me soft, weak, and I will not stand for it. I am a warrior! I am a feared warrior! I cannot have any weaknesses and you are my weakness! I hate it and I hate you for it!"
He glared at her.
For the first time in a long time, she was speechless. She watched his face soften.
"But at the same time..."
He took a few steps toward her letting his arms fall to his sides.
"At the same time, I can hardly contain myself when I'm around you. My heart beats faster when you are here."
He took her trembling hand and placed it against his chest.
"Feel that?"
She nodded.
"That's what you do to me. I love you and I hate you. I want you with me and I want you to disappear. You destroy who I've been for the last ten years. You were my princess and then you were a distant memory. I accepted that. I accepted your death."
A lump caught in his throat. He swallowed hard.
"I accepted my eternal loneliness and in a flash, here you were with the same caring eyes you once had for me. The same gentle touch that used to electrify my skin. While a lot about you is the same, you've changed too, Giana. I am not the only one who has become a different person."
"How?"
Was all she could manage.
"The woman I fell in love with was not a quitter. She did not cry over petty bullshit. She was strong, proud, and passionate. She, for damn sure, would have never let a pathetic piece of shit like Yamcha treat her like a door mat."
He touched her face.
"She had stars in her eyes and plans to save the universe of all of it's evil. Not by force but, with her heart. You saw the good in the universe where others saw evil and corruption."
He tilted her chin, forcing her to look at him.
"Your once sparkling eyes are sad and your once bright smile is now being forced. That was never the woman I fell in love with."
She pulled her hand away from him and off of his chest. She took a few steps back.
"I'm sorry."
She managed.
"All I've ever wanted was for you to be happy, Vegeta. I came here to find a trace of you. Finding you was something I never thought I could do and when I did... I guess..."
She took a few more steps away.
"I never thought you could hate me so much. I'm sorry for coming."
With that, she was gone.
Giana tried to keep herself together as she walked back to her room. She never wanted to hurt him or anyone. Her goal was to find what was left of him for closure. She had never expected to find him. She had never expected to see his face again. When she landed on Earth and had become friends with the other Z fighters, she didn't want to leave. For the first time in a very long time, she felt like she had a family. She would often ask Yamcha how she got so lucky. He always told her, "you deserve it" with a sweet smile.
She took a deep breath and eyed her suitcases in the closet.
How could he? How could he hurt her this way? He told her he loved her. He told her he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
"What a bunch of bullshit."
She sighed, wiping her face. Maybe it was time to move on? She had found what she had been looking for. Was it time to go back? Was it time to end her quest? She yanked a case out of the closet and dropped it onto the bed. She began tossing her things into it. She wanted nothing more than to disappear from Earth and forget everything she had found.
"Where are you going?"
Yamcha asked from the doorway. He looked defeated. His shoulders were down, his head hung low, and his hands were in his pockets as he leaned against the doorframe.
"Somewhere else, I guess."
She never looked at him.
"Please... Please talk to me. We can work this out."
He stepped into the room.
"Stop it, Yamcha."
She pulled her clothes out of the dresser.
He fell down to his knees next to her.
"Please? I'm on my knees, Giana. I don't want to lose you."
"Get up!"
She growled at him.
"You didn't mind the consequences when you were in bed with that girl!"
"It meant nothing."
He wrapped his arms around her waist.
"You mean everything to me."
He began to cry.
She sighed, petting his hair. Tears flooded her face.
"I have to go."
She whispered.
"Please don't go."
He squeezed her tight.
"I can't stay here anymore, Yamcha. I landed and inserted myself into your lives. I had no right to do that. It's time I move on."
She explained through her tears.
"Stay with me! We can move you in! There is plenty of room for the two of us!"
He begged.
"Yamcha..."
She tried to pull away.
"I can hardly look at you right now. You've lost all of my trust, my respect, and..."
"But have I lost your love?"
He looked up at her. His nose and cheeks were red. His eyes were sad and broken.
"I don't know."
She managed.
"Alright."
He stumbled to his feet.
"I'll wait. I'd wait for you forever if that's what it takes."
He leaned in to kiss her. His heart shattered as she turned her head, avoiding his lips. His shoulders fell again.
"See you in a few minutes then."
He muttered before slipping out of the room.
Giana sighed as she fell to the bed.
"Ana?"
Vegeta stood in the door way. His arms were folded and his expression unreadable.
"Yeah?"
She looked up at him.
He took a deep breath. His heart pounded in his ears.
"Where are you going?"
"I don't know, Vegeta. Home?"
She quickly looked away from him.
"Where might that be?"
His almost taunting tone made her growl.
"I guess it's wherever I land."
She sighed, wiping her cheeks and springing from the bed to gather the rest of her things.
"You can't leave."
He demanded.
"Why not?"
She squinted at him.
"Because, Ana..."
He swallowed hard.
"Because I..."
"Vegeta!"
Tien flew into the room
"We need you! Ana, stay in here! You'll be safe in here!"
"What?"
She looked at the two men, terrified.
"What's going on?"
Vegeta quickly cupped her face.
"Do not leave this room!"
He ordered before disappearing down the hall.
