Lyri continued walking next to Nix. The wind was winding down but it was still too dangerous to fly. “Why do you and Vegeta seem to have a rivalry going on?”
“Every year for as long as I can remember, Vegeta and I were forced to fight each other. It was part of them trying to push me to my limits. Once I achieved super Saiyan, they had us fight again, but before I could even go super in that fight, they ended it and declared that I was a success. Vegeta and I have always been equal, neither one losing to the other,” Nix told her.
“Until now, huh?” she asked.
“Yeah. He wasn’t supposed to know though. No one was,” Nix said.
“Why? What’s so bad about you going super?” Lyri asked.
“After everything that happened with Broly, the king got scared of this power. He did everything up to and including trying to get rid of me,” Nix told her.
“That’s why you were sent to Frieza’s ship, wasn’t it?” Lyri asked.
Nix nodded. “I think the king figured it was a way to get rid of me without dirtying his own hands.”
Rage bubbled inside Lyri. “There are no words for how I feel right now. How could he do this? He’s supposed to be a king but he’s nothing more than a tyrant.”
“As weird as it may sound, the best hope the Saiyans have lies in Vegeta,” Nix said.
“I agree,” Lyri said, “I don’t think our people can wait for his father to step down, though. If we want to survive, I think he’s going to have to take it for himself.”
Nix nodded. “The sooner he takes the throne, the sooner our people stop suffering at both the king and Frieza’s hands.”
“Vegeta won’t just start an uprising though. He’s not that type of person. Something big would have to happen for him to do that,” Lyri said.
Kakarot was forced to land as the the wind started picking up. Though the guards he had left with took off in different directions, he didn’t feel like they were taking Lyri’s disappearance seriously. As he was walking, he comm came on and Vegeta snapped in his ear, “Did you find them?”
“Not yet,” Kakarot told him.
“Well hurry up!” the prince snapped.
“I’m going as fast as I can! I can’t fly anymore because it’s too windy!” Kakarot said.
“Just hurry up!” Vegeta snapped again before cutting the link off.
Kakarot continued walking, wondering where his adopted sister was. He hadn’t wanted to leave her alone last night but Bulma insisted. It was like she disappeared into thin air. Nix too. He found it odd that they were both gone. Did they leave together? And why were they gone all night? They weren’t together were they? He shook his head. No. They couldn’t be. Lyri was with Vegeta and she cared about him too much to do something like that. But then why? They barely knew each other. He couldn’t see any reason why they would both be gone all night. He clicked on his scouter to see if he could pick up their ki signatures. He was shocked when the scouter picked them up, though they were stil very far away. He clicked his scouter off and took off running in their direction.
“So, what’s it like? Going super?” Lyri asked.
“It’s like this sudden rush of power building up inside of you and you can’t contain it fully so it just explodes out of you,” Nix told her.
“Since the legends were wrong, I wonder if anyone could go super,” Lyri wondered.
“Probably,” Nix said.
“Let’s just hope the next person to achieve it is Vegeta. He’s already pissed that he wasn’t the first. I’d hate to see what he’ll do if someone else achieves it before him,” Lyri said.
“We’d never hear the end of it,” Nix said.
Lyri stopped walking for a second, looking at the speck on the horizon. “Is...is that Kakarot?” she asked, “What the hell is he doing out here?”
“Probably running from Vegeta,” Nix replied.
“Ha ha. Come on. Let’s go see what he’s doing,” Lyri said before running towards her adopted brother. Nix shrugged and ran after her.
It wasn’t much later when the Saiyans met each other. “I finally found you!” Kakarot said.
“Did you get Nix’s message to Vegeta?” Lyri asked.
“Yeah. He got mad and sent me and a couple guards out for you two,” Kakarot told her.
“Did you relay the entire message?” Nix asked.
“Yeah,” Kakarot said, “Kinda.”
Nix pinched the bridge of his nose. “What did you tell him?”
“That you and Lyri wouldn’t be at the banquet,” Kakarot told him.
“What about the rest of the message?” Nix asked.
“I forgot it,” Kakarot told him.
“Kakarot! Do you know how that sounds?” Lyri asked.
“No?” Kakarot asked confused.
“It sounds like we wouldn’t be there because we’d be together!” Lyri said.
“But you were together,” Kakarot pointed out.
“Kakarot,” Lyri said, “You made it sound like we would be fucking instead of being there!"
"How fucking hard was it to tell Vegeta everything?" Nix yelled.
"I forgot! I'm sorry! Gods, it's not that big of a deal!" Kakarot yelled back.
"I can't believe you...Get out of my way.." Lyri said before she shoved Kakarot aside and continued walking.
“She’s mad at me,” Kakarot said sadly.
“Can you blame her?” Nix asked, following Lyri.
“But I didn’t do anything wrong! Not really! I told Vegeta that you both wouldn’t be there like you asked!” Kakarot said as he followed them.
“You know the saying less is more?” Nix asked. Kakarot nodded. “Now was not one of the times to use that saying. More information would have helped.”
Lyri stopped, causing Kakarot to run into her.
“Why’d you stop?” he asked.
“Give me your scouter,” she said. Kakarot handed it to her. She opened the link to Vegeta’s comm but got static. Frowning, she closed the link and handed the scouter back to Kakarot. She turned around and kept walking.
Meanwhile...Vegeta getting ready for the banquet to welcome Frieza. He grabbed his royal armor off the shelf in his closet and glanced at the garment bag hanging amongst Lyri’s clothes. Anger swelled inside him once again. Where the hell were Lyri and Nix? He stepped out of the closet, pulled on his armor and straightened out his cape behind him. He left his room and walked down to the throne room, which had been cleared and remodeled for this event. He made his way through the crowd and up to the head table. He sat at the far end away from everyone else and poured himself a drink. He hoped that this evening would go by quick so that he could get out of here. This was the last place he wanted to be.
“Father insists you come mingle.”
Vegeta looked at his sister. “Tell father that my presence should suffice. I didn’t want any of this.”
“Still sulking because Lyri left you?” Kiki asked.
Vegeta glared at her. “How the hell do you know about that?”
“People don’t keep secrets for long here,” Kiki said. She placed a hand on Vegeta’s shoulder. “Don’t worry to much about her, brother, she was beneath you anyway.”
Vegeta shrugged her hand off. “Worry about your own love life. She is far better than you anyway.”
“Is that how you talk to your sister? Really, Vegeta? That is just so unbecoming of a prince.” Vegeta rolled his eyes at the sickly sweet voice that walked up behind him and Kiki.
“Lord Frieza,” Kiki greeted.
“Hello, my dear,” Frieza said to Kiki, “Is he always like this to you?”
“He’s like this with everyone,” Kiki told Frieza.
“Is that so?” Frieza asked, “Even his intended?”
“His intended has run off with someone else,” Kiki said. Vegeta shot her a glare and she smirked at him.
“Poor Vegeta,” Frieza said, “I’ll send Ginyu out to find her and we can punish her together.”
“That won’t be necessary,” Vegeta said as he stood.
“Nonsense,” Frieza said, “Ginyu.” The large, muscular, horned purple alien walked up to Frieza. “Find Prince Vegeta’s former intended. It seems that she has run off with someone else and needs to be punished.” Ginyu nodded and left.
“Excuse me,” Vegeta said, moving to follow Ginyu.
“Let Ginyu do his job and enjoy yourself, Vegeta,” Frieza told him.
Vegeta knew he had to get out of there and find Lyri and Nix before Ginyu. “I’ve had enough of the festivities,” he said. He didn’t wait for a reply from either of them before he got up. Moving quickly, he left the throne room, hoping he was quick enough to find Lyri and Nix.
Lyri was thankful that the wind had finally stopped and the three of them had been able to fly for a while now. She landed at the edge of the capital and started running towards the palace, Nix and Kakarot at her heels. They were about to run inside when a large purple alien stepped out from the doorway.
“You,” he said looking at Lyri, “Are you Vegeta’s whatever it is?”
“Who’s asking?” Lyri asked.
“I am. Captain Ginyu of the great Ginyu Force! I was sent by Lord Frieza himself to find you. If you are her that is...” Ginyu said.
Lyri swallowed hard and glanced back at Nix and Kakarot.
“You must be her since your acting so nervous!” Ginyu said. He grabbed her arm, saying, “Let’s go. I can’t wait to see what Lord Frieza has in store for you.” He started dragging her back down the hallway he had come from, Nix and Kakarot following them.
“We can’t just let him hand her over to Frieza,” Kakarot muttered.
“I know. On my count, we attack,” Nix whispered, “One. Two...”
Nix never got to three because while Lyri was struggling, she noticed Vegeta round the corner. “Vegeta!” she yelled. Vegeta was standing before them in the blink of an eye.
“Let. My. Intended. Go,” Vegeta said through gritted teeth.
“Sorry, Vegeta, but orders are orders. I’m sure Frieza will give you back whatever’s left of her,” Ginyu said with an evil grin.
Lyri growled and bit down hard on Ginyu’s hand. “Ow! You stupid bitch!” Ginyu yelled. He smacked her hard. She stumbled back, but turned back to him and tried hitting him but Vegeta grabbed her and dragged her back.
“Let me go! I’m gonna kill him!” Lyri said angrily.
“Shut up and shut up now!” Vegeta hissed. He shot a look to Nix.
Nix smirked and cracked his knuckles. “We got this, right, Kakarot?” The younger Saiyan nodded, smirking mischievously.
As Vegeta dragged Lyri away, the sounds of the fight echoed down the halls but died down as they got to the royal wing. Vegeta opened the door to his quarters and shoved Lyri inside, locking the door behind him.
“Where in the seven hells have you been?” Vegeta asked.
“Vegeta, I-“ Lyri started but he stopped her.
“No, I don’t want to hear it. You’re relieved of you duties. I’ll make sure you don’t get sent to Frieza’s ship or anything like that but you’re free to go,” Vegeta told her. Lyri stood there in disbelief. There was a knock on the door and Vegeta cautiously opened it, only for Nix and Kakarot to push their way in.
“What’d we miss?” Kakarot asked.
Nix looked from Vegeta to Lyri. “Perhaps we should go...”
“No!” Lyri said.
“Ok then...” Nix said.
Vegeta snarled, “What do you mean no?”
“I mean what I said. No. You are not relieving me of my duties,” Lyri snapped.
Vegeta walked over to her and stood over her, peering down at the slightly shorter Saiyan. She stared defiantly back up at him. “You dare to defy me?” he snarled.
“I’m not letting you do this just because you’re pissed at me for all the wrong reasons,” she continued, “If you really want to do this, then fine. But you should hear us out first. You’ll want to hear what we have to say.”
“Who are you to tell me what I need to hear?” Vegeta asked. Admittedly, she was pissing him off to no end, but part of him found her defiance kind of a turn on.
Lyri’s amethyst eyes narrowed at him. “If you don’t listen to this, then everything that will happen will be on your hands.”
“Lyri, think about what your saying...” Nix warned.
“I am. And if Vegeta refuses to listen then he’s no better than his father. If he is then we have no choice but to rebel-“ Vegeta grabbed her neck and lifted her up to stare at her directly in the eyes. Kakarot moved to go help Lyri but Nix stopped him.
“Let’s see where this goes...” Nix said.
“Something’s not right with you,” Kakarot told him.
“What rebellion?” Vegeta snarled.
“Put. Me. Down,” Lyri seethed. The Saiyan prince continued to glower at the woman before him. She had not moved to free herself nor did she seem afraid of the position she was in. Realizing that he was probably not going to get any information out of her like this, he slowly set her back down.
Taking a deep breath, Vegeta asked again, “What rebellion?”
“Do not ever touch me like that again,” Lyri snapped.
“Do you really think it wise to threaten me?” Vegeta asked.
“See, Lyri, I told you he was an ass!” Kakarot said.
“Shut up, Kakarot! No one is talking to you!” Lyri snapped.
Nix stepped in between Lyri and Vegeta. The atmosphere around them changed and a heavy pressure-like presence surrounded the room. Lyri glared daggers at Nix but backed up and retreated to the other side of the room.
“This does not concern you,” Vegeta told him.
“No, but it does concern the entire Saiyan race,” Nix said, “So shut up and listen.”
Vegeta growled and crossed his arms over his chest. “Fine.”
“First, the reason we were gone, if you still want to know, is because we were attacked. Lyri was hit so I took her to a place that I knew would be safe. It just so happens that it was farther away than I expected,” Nix told him.
“And why am I just now hearing about this?” Vegeta asked.
“Maybe because you’re an ass that dismissed me from my duties before I could explain that to you!” Lyri snapped.
“You would have known...” Nix said before shooting Kakarot a glare, “If someone had remembered the entire message down!”
“I said I was sorry!” Kakarot said.
“Moving on...” Nix said, “Lyri is right. You need to know what your father has been and possibly could still be doing.” Nix explained that from five until he was fifteen that he had been a part of an experiment to create a better, stronger Saiyan. He was tortured, starved and made to fight fellow Saiyans. How they were pushed beyond their limits and how most were pushed to death. How their missions were focused on stealth and if they were noticed, they were beaten to an inch of their lives. “You never unhear the screams. You can never unsmell the smell of burnt flesh.”
“Burnt flesh?” Kakarot asked.
“If you try to ascend before your body is physically ready, you literally burn out,” Nix explained, “I haven’t even explained why it was shut down.” Vegeta said nothing so Nix continued, “It was forced to shut down, as far as I know, because what should have been a huge success ended up a huge failure. He destroyed most of the facility and brought more attention to the king’s experiments than the king wanted.”
“This is what your father has been doing to his own people, Vegeta. Experimentations and sending them to a known psychotic killer,” Lyri said.
“In order for our race not only survive, but thrive, the first thing that we need to insure is that you aren’t going to make the same mistakes your father has,” Nix said.
“I believe that you are and will continue to be far greater than the king,” Lyri said, “But I...we need to hear it from you yourself that you’ll put a stop to our people’s suffering.”
“Why do you idiots think I’m out there going along with these damn celebrations?” Vegeta said, “Do I seem like the type to care for trivial things like that?”
“So you knew?” Lyri asked angrily.
“I did not know the extent of my father’s tyranny,” Vegeta said.
“Then what did you know?” Nix asked.
“Father once told me about a weapon he had procured that was supposedly so powerful that it had to be locked away for everyone’s protection. While I’m not one for rumors or gossip, even I turned an ear and listened to the tellings of Broly. I can’t say for sure if it’s really him or not that father was talking about. If it is and even if it’s not, I know I can’t let my father continue like this,” Vegeta said.
“So you’re going to take the throne?” Lyri asked. Vegeta was silent. “You cannot be serious. With everything that you know, you refuse to do something.”
“I am doing something!” Vegeta bellowed, “I cannot start a goddamn war just because. I have no proof of his doings outside of sending Saiyans to Frieza, which has been done longer than any of us have been alive. Now, tell me, if you were a regular person with no knowledge of anything about my father’s doings, and I started a war, what would you think?”
Lyri sighed. She knew he was right. “So what? We just wait until he steps down and let more Saiyans suffer in the meantime?”
“I’m not saying that!” Vegeta snapped.
“Then what are you saying?” Lyri asked.
“That we need concrete proof of my father’s doings. We need evidence that proves he’s done these unspeakable acts. Once we have those, we can take what we know and do what needs to be done. Until then I cannot and will not start a war,” Vegeta told her.
“Listen,” Nix said, “We can’t do anything right now anyway. The coronation is tomorrow and Vegeta leaves the day after that. We’re obviously not going to find the proof before he leaves.”
“So what do we do?” Lyri asked.
“We go back to the facility. See if there’s anything left there that we can dig up. If we find anything, we tell Vegeta and go from there,” Nix said.
“Fine,” Vegeta said. Lyri and Kakarot nodded their agreement. “Kakarot, you can go,” Vegeta said, dismissing him. Kakarot left, wondering why Lyri and Nix got to stay. Vegeta looked at Lyri and cocked his head towards the bedroom, telling her to give them a minute. Lyri retreated to the bedroom and sat on the bed, forcing herself not to eavesdrop. A minute later, she heard the door close and Vegeta walked into the room. She stood, waiting to see what he had to say. “Hurry up and shower so we can go to bed.”
