Pull the Trigger and the Nightmare Stops…

“dear my friends in the time we've spent forever after beyond this when will our nightmare ever end?
pull the trigger and the nightmare stops...”

Part 14

Things had been going great for the past few months. Simon had given them several jobs that had gone off like clockwork. The team of Yuy and Maxwell was as good as it ever had been, much to the delight of W.E.I.

But recently, Duo seemed to be more poised, more confident and possessed of a sharper killer instinct. He knew without looking just what Heero was going to do next and he was there. It was as if they were inside each others minds. Visual signals almost weren’t needed. Understanding and communication seemed to flowed through the air between the two of them. The killer team of Yuy/Maxwell just got deadlier with each successful mission. They were almost untouchable.

They had been relaxing for about a week after the last successful mission when the phone call came. Heero answered, as usual.

“Yuy here. Hello, Simon. What’s up?” Duo immediately perked up, listening. Simon didn’t usually call, he would just send Heero an e-mail with attachments about upcoming missions.

“Right. Yes. How soon?” Now Duo was really curious.

“Of course. We’ll be there.” Heero hung up.

“What? What did he say? Be where? What are we doing?” Duo was almost frantic in his need to know what was going on.

“Calm down, Duo. He wants us to come to the office. Two hours. Dress nice. That’s all he said,” Heero told him.

“Dress nice? How nice? Work nice? Going out to dinner and a movie nice? Dancing nice? What?” demanded Duo.

“Not work or dancing. Dress for a nice dinner and a movie,” Heero told him.

“That leaves out most of my pretty clothes,” said Duo with a slight frown. “So, what should I wear?”

Heero rolled his eyes. Duo was such a clothes horse and he loved slutty outfits. Picking something appropriate for the office would be a challenge. They finally settled on a nice pair of black dress slacks, a tight black silk shirt with a crimson tie and a matching scrunchie for his hair, which he wore in a loose ponytail at Heero's request. Heero chose black dress slacks and a midnight blue silk shirt with a black tie. Together they looked dark, dangerous and handsome.

They walked into the W.E.I. building promptly at 5:45. Lady Une smiled and raised an eyebrow at the two.

“Don’t the two of you look smashing? Very posh,” she said. Then she held out a hand to Duo. It was the first time that she had really acknowledged him in his own right. Taking his left hand in hers, she admired the band that adorned it. “Lovely. And well deserved. You may go up now. Simon is waiting for you.”

She smiled again as the two entered the elaborate private lift.

“Heero, she talked to me,” said Duo, stunned.

“Hn. I guess you’re legit, now,” replied Heero.

“Legit?” asked Duo, puzzled.

“Lady Une had a well developed sense of propriety. It seems that you’re now part of acceptable society, Mrs Yuy,” explained Heero. “You’re a member of the elite now.”

“You mean you finally made an honest man out of me and now I’m acceptable?” Duo asked, rather hotly.

“You have always been acceptable to me, no matter what anybody else thinks,” Heero said soothingly.

“I should hope so. Well, it’s kind of nice, not being your dog anymore. Now I can torment you all I want,” said Duo, a wicked gleam in his eye that promised Heero the torment of the damned when they were done with the meeting and alone once more.

“I should be scared, but all that does is turn me on more. I’m ready, Mrs Yuy, hit me with your best shot, fire away,” invited Heero.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, depending on which side of the lift doors one was on, the ornate doors opened on to Simon’s office and the surprise that was waiting for them, and so they had to shelve their play for a later time.

“Gentlemen, pleases come in,” said Simon, greeting them warmly. “Have a seat over here.”

Heero and Duo walked in and were quite surprised to see Quatre and Trowa seated on the furthest couch.

“Hi, guys,” said Quatre, looking a little nervous. “Do you know what this is all about?”

“No idea,” Heero replied as he and Duo sat opposite of the other two. Heero looked over at Trowa, who just smiled enigmatically. Duo took his hand and he squeezed it, then they all sat silently, waiting.

“Can I get anyone anything to drink? Coffee, tea or a soda?” Simon asked politely, breaking the uncomfortable silence. “Mr Winner will be out presently.”

“I’d like some tea, please,” Quatre requested.

“Coke for me, please,” answered Duo.

“Water, please,” said Heero.

“Tea, please,” added Trowa.

Simon busied himself getting drinks and the minutes ticked past slowly.

Suddenly the office door burst open and Azrael Winner strode through into the outer office.

“Finally. I thought that old wind bag Grossman would never shut up. You get that man started and you just can’t stop him. Sorry to have kept you all waiting. Simon, if I could have some coffee, then if you would be so kind as to join us?” Azrael requested, smiling charmingly at everyone as he sat in the chair at the head of the coffee table.

Simon joined them, bringing the requested coffee, then sat next to Duo, who scooted closer to Heero to give him room. Simon nodded his thanks, then he looked over at Trowa, who took a deep breath and stood up.

“I have asked you all here today for a very special reason. Unfortunately, WuFei couldn’t make it,” Trowa began. He looked at each of them briefly and then addressed them one by one.

“Heero, we’ve know each other for more than a year and I would like to think that in that time we’ve become good friends.

“Duo, though I really don’t know you very well, I can see by the look on Heero Yuy’s face that you are very special to him and therefore I would like to think that you are also my friend.

“Simon. Father. That was a big surprise, to find out about you after so many years. I’m sure there was good reason for the secrecy, and I know you will tell me, when you feel I need to know.

“Quatre, my beloved, you have been my one and only for the past seven years and I love you very much.

“Mr Winner, I’ve come here today to ask you for your son’s hand in marriage. I am a humble man, and I do not have a lot to offer, but what I have I give to him freely and completely. What I have to give to him is my total devotion, all of my love, my heart and my soul. I love your son as I have never loved anyone else, and I would like your permission to ask him to spend the rest of his life with me.”

They all sat quietly, stunned, Quatre with his mouth hanging open in shocked amazement.

“Have you spoken to my son about this?” Azrael asked.

“No, sir. I wanted your permission before I was so bold as to approach him with my proposal,” Trowa responded.

“Well, well,” said Azrael, thoughtfully. “This is not totally unexpected. You have been with him for a long time and I have watched your affection for each other grow over the years. I thought, at first, that you were just another of my son’s passing fancies. He’s had enough of those. But I have seen him grow, mature and settle down, and I can’t help but believe that it is, in part, due to your influence. I think you are good for him and that you will make a good partner for him. And so I give you my blessing and my permission to ask him if he would consent to marry you.”

Trowa smiled, then turned to Quatre, took a small box out of his pocket and went down on one knee in front of his lover.

“Quatre Rabara Winner, would you consent to marry me? I would offer you my love and my devotion, my heart and my soul if you would agree to become my partner in marriage,” he said solemnly.

“Ah… ah… Oh, oh Trowa, yes, yes, yes,” Quatre cried, tears running down his face, and he threw himself into Trowa's arms, showering him with kisses after Trowa slipped the ring on his finger.

Duo sniffed a few times and Heero hugged him, then reached for a tissue as Duo tried to wipe his eyes and nose on Heero's shoulder.

Simon and Azrael sat and smiled at each other as the young couple on the floor finally untangled themselves from each other and got up. Quatre stood before his father, holding Trowa's hand, a radiant smile on his face.

“Father?” he said.

“Yes, son?” his father answered.

“Trowa Barton has asked me to marry him, father,” said Quatre, “and I have said yes.”

“Have you now?” responded Azrael. “Well, I guess that this calls for a little celebration, then. Simon, champagne for everyone, if you would, please.”

Simon popped the cork on the waiting bottle, filled the glasses and everyone drank a toast to the newly engaged couple. The impromptu party continued on for some time while everyone chatted.

“Heero, I have something for you,” said Simon, getting a rather large, ornate piece of paper off of his desk. “You might want to give this to Duo.”

Heero looked at it closely, and a smile crossed his face.

“Hey, babe,” he called to Duo, who was admiring Quatre's ring. “Here’s a little something for you.”

Duo came over and took the paper, looked it over carefully, gasped and then almost cooed over it.

“Heero, it’s a marriage certificate. Our marriage certificate. Where did you get this? It has the right date and everybody’s signatures and everything,” he said, amazed.

Heero shrugged and pointed to Simon, who smiled broadly at the happily grinning Duo.

“It’s just a little something I dug up,” said Simon. “It’s all recorded and a legal, binding document, Mrs Yuy. That paper makes you truly man and wife. I thought it might be a good thing for you to have, all things considered.”

“Thank you,” said Duo, a small tear escaping from one eye. “This really means a lot to me.”

Quatre came over to look at the paper, admiring it.

“That’s really nice, Duo. Congratulations. So, Simon, you never told Trowa. Did my father know?” Quatre asked, changing the subject.

“Of course. Azrael and I have no secrets from each other. I never told my son because by the time I found out about him, he had no desire to know me. When he came to work here, and then was assigned to you, Azrael thought it best to just let it lie. Your safety has always been first and foremost, Master Quatre,” Simon told him. The two drifted off together, talking softly.

Heero and Trowa were engaged in conversation and Azrael Winner decided to take advantage of Duo's being alone to talk to the young man privately. He approached him quietly, but made sure Duo saw him coming, not wishing for a repeat of the first time they met.

“So, pretty Duo, how are things going?” he asked in a soft, gentle voice. “Do you like my apartment?”

“Your apartment? I thought it was a company property?” said Duo.

“Oh, it is. But it’s the one I use personally for my special guests. It’s always vacant and ready. That’s why you got it on such short notice,” Azrael replied. “You’re very beautiful. Heero Yuy is a luck man to have someone as beautiful and charming as you to grace his bed. I envy him.”

They stood and stared deeply into each other’s eyes for several long minutes. The tip of Duo's tongue peeked out to wet his bottom lip nervously, and his mouth stayed open slightly, invitingly. Azrael took a step closer and his hand lifted to touch Duo's cheek, then started to slide behind Duo's neck, as if preparing to pull the boy in closer to the sensual mouth that eagerly awaited his. Duo was fascinated and took a small step forward on his own, as if drawn towards the other somehow, held mesmerize by his gaze.

Then Simon was there, followed closely by Heero and the others.

“Azrael, no,” he said in a soft, steely voice.

“We were just talking, Simon,” he said softly, dropping his hand but never taking his eyes off of Duo as he stepped back. “Weren’t we, Duo?”

“Ah, yeah, talking, un-huh,” Duo agreed, nodding his head, but he leaned back against Heero, who had stepped up close behind him, a bemused look on his face.

Heero frowned, but said nothing as his arms closed possessively around Duo. Azrael Winner simply smiled enigmatically at Duo.
Quatre frowned at his father, his eyes narrowing, but he said nothing as well.

“Maybe we should think about breaking up this little party,” said Simon. “Some of us still have work to do. Ah, Heero, a moment, if you please? And Azrael? Stay away from Duo.”

“Ah, Simon, you take all of the joy out of my life. But I’ll behave. For now,” he said with a quirk of a smile and one eyebrow lifted. “Son, congratulations on your engagement. We shall talk later about plans for your wedding. Trowa, my best to you. My pretty Duo, next time, we’ll talk again, shall we?”

Duo stared after him as he went back into his office, not noticing Quatre trying to get his attention at first.

“Duo!” Quatre raised his voice, pulling at the others sleeve.

“What? Yes, what is it, Quatre?” said Duo, finally pulling his attention away from the older man.

“You want to be careful around him. He’s dangerous. He has no scruples and very few morals. Simon is the only thing that keeps him in check,” Quatre said very seriously. “He’ll seduce you, if you let him, and you’ll never even know he’s doing it.”

“Quatre, that’s your father,” said Duo, shocked.

“I know that. That’s why I’m warning you. You know how Heero is about you. Please, just watch out, alright?” Quatre asked. “Don’t be alone with him if you can help it.”

“I think you’re exaggerating, but thanks for the warning. I’ll keep it in mind,” said Duo, his gaze going back to the door that Azrael Winner had disappeared through for another brief glance before it continued on it’s way to find and stay on Heero Yuy.

Quatre made a mental note to speak to Heero about the apparent fascination his father seemed to have with Duo. Quarter’s fingers went to his lips as he remembered the kiss he had shared with Duo that night, not so long ago. It might be kind of nice to see just what it was that held Heero Yuy so enthralled to this long haired beauty. Just one night in his bed, in his arms…

From behind his one way mirror, Azrael smiled. The seeds had fallen on fertile ground, it seemed and were germinating. Now to tend them until they matured and produced.

Much as he hated using the boys, he knew that the only way to kill the viper that was after his son and heir was to chop off it’s head, and the only way to get it out of it’s hole was to offer up bait that it couldn’t resist: Duo Maxwell and Quatre Rabara Winner. Together, they were irresistible. And the only way to get the viper to strike with enough force to bring it out of it’s nest was to have the two as seemingly easy prey, together and distracted.

So he would continue his dangerous game of flirtation with the beautiful, desirable Mrs Yuy, hopefully keeping just close enough to the boundary lines so that Heero wouldn’t snap, but making his son more aware of the charms and allure of Mrs Yuy. The end result was to get them in bed together, because that was when the viper would strike, seeing Heero and Trowa away and off guard, WuFei out of the picture and Duo too enraptured with Quatre to protect himself, let alone the two of them.

Then the ax would fall. Azrael rubbed his hands together in anticipation. And, of course, the chance to play with the delightful Mrs Yuy a bit, that was just an added bonus.

~*~

Heero knew that something was up, of course. His boss wouldn’t be openly flirting with Duo just for the hell of it. He was above that, Heero was sure. He also knew Heero's past too well, knew what Heero was really capable of. Also, Simon’s little reprimand and Azrael Winner’s response all smacked of intrigue. Something was definitely afoot and Heero was pretty sure it had to do with information gleaned from his ex-partner, Mac. There had to be more then just a jealous coalition wanting to take Duo out of the picture. No matter how effective Duo made him at doing his job, there had to be more to it, but his bosses didn’t seemed inclined to say anything at the present time.

But eventually, they were going to have to tell him what was going on, and what they were planning. So he would watch and wait. But he would also keep Duo close to him. No sense in running any additional risks, and no matter what he said, he still didn’t like the thought of another man touching Duo. Duo was his and he was a possessive man.
