Vegeta jumped awake as he heard a pounding on his door and his father’s voice. He quickly looked around in panic, then groaned when he remembered where he was. “Vegeta, time to get up. You have to go to Kyoto today.” Vegeta groaned in remembrance and stretched. “Please be in there.” He heard him murmur on the other side of the door.
Vegeta sighed and got out of bed. “Yes, I’m here.” He answered before his father could panic.
He heard a sigh of relief. “Good. Now open the door so the servants may prepare you.”
The groggy noble put on a robe and opened the door. “Morning.” His father greeted in a fake pleasant tone as he squinted into the light that enveloped the hallway. He grunted at the greeting as he watched the many servants pour into his room. “As soon as you’re dressed, come downstairs and eat breakfast. There will be a carriage with four guards waiting for you to escort you to the Hara manor. You have an hour.” And with that, his father left his presence.
Vegeta squinted after him with tired eyes, then closed his door, only to be bombarded with busy servants. After an hour of almost falling asleep again while preparations were made, he joined his parents in the dining room. Lady Hokoru smiled at her son as he sat down. “Oh, I can’t believe you get to see Lord Akuto! It’s been so long since we’ve seen him! I doubt Vegeta even remembers him.” She looked at her husband who seated himself as well.
“Yes, well, he was quite young to remember anything at the time. Though, the man only showed himself for a brief time. The last time we were there, we were forming an alliance with his brother, Lord Bardock.” Lord Hokoru’s expression became a little saddened as he remembered that time so long ago.
“Oh, my. That was so long ago.” Lady Hokoru shared the same expression.
“Yes. Sixteen years to be exact.” Lord Hokoru began to eat.
“Good heavens! That long?” Lady Hokoru held her face with one hand in thought.
Vegeta watched the exchange for a bit before he began to eat as well. Lord Hokoru was pleased to see that his son was eating again. Perhaps he has forgiven him? “I believe Vegeta was three at the time. He complained the whole time we were there.” He grunted out before returning to his food.
Lady Hokoru giggled at the memory. “Oh, Vegeta. He was so adorable!” She glanced at her son before patting his cheek. “And now look at him. He’s turned into such a handsome man.” She smiled and turned to her husband. “Like his father.”
Lord Hokoru choked on what he was swallowing before it eventually went down. He pounded his chest and coughed. “Yes, well. He’s not a man until he’s married.” He took a sip from his tea to wash down what was giving him trouble.
Vegeta ignored the comment and decided to keep them on topic. “Mother, what happened to the Mamoru family? How come Akuto took over?” Lady Hokoru was giving her husband a worried look before turning her attention back to her son.
“Hm, what was it? I believe they both had an accident on their way to meet us for a visit.” She tapped a finger on her chin as she tried to remember what happened. Her expression suddenly became sad as it all came back to her. “Yes. They were on their way when the horses were spooked and became uncontrollable. They were headed towards a ravine…when the horses noticed the drop and made a sharp turn, causing the carriage to…careen over the cliff.” Her sentences broke from the familiar grief that overtook her. Vegeta’s surprised expression became one of pity as he reached over and patted his mother’s hand that was sitting on her lap. She smiled sadly at the effort. “Anyway, Akuto took over his brother’s position in honor of the family’s business.” She sighed and took a sip from her tea.
Lord Hokoru paused in his meal. “Didn’t they have a son?”
Lady Hokoru looked up at her husband as the thought suddenly struck her. “Oh, yes! I can’t believe I forgot about him! Such a good little boy. It always made me happy to see you two playing together.” She looked toward her son with a smile from the memory.
Vegeta looked at his parents in confusion.
Lord Hokoru chuckled. “Like I said, you were too young to remember.”
“What happened to him?” Vegeta couldn’t help but ask.
Lady Hokoru was about to explain when her husband beat her to it. “He was with them when they had the accident. It’s a shame. He had so much to look forward to.” He looked up at his son and stared at him for a moment. “Yes. It’s really too bad.”
Vegeta was confused at the look, then his mother pieced it together. “Oh, of course! You and Kakarot were supposed to get married! We had it all planned out. Aw, it’s really a shame.” She picked at her food absentmindedly and sighed.
The young noble froze at the name. “Wh-Who…did you say?”
“Kakarot no Mamoru. We had plans for you two to be married when you came of age.” His father explained as he took another bite of his breakfast.
Vegeta forgot about his food as he stared in shock at nothing. Lady Hokoru looked up from her meal and at her son. “Vegeta? Vegeta are you alright, dear?” She shook his arm gently when she saw the panicked look on his face.
He roused from his thoughts. “Uh, yes. It’s just…shocking to hear is all.”
His mother smiled in understanding. “I suppose we should’ve told you sooner, but the memory was so…sad that we wanted to…forget.” She looked guilty as she said this.
Vegeta patted her hand again that was on his arm. “You shouldn’t forget someone so dear to you. You should honor them by remembering them.”
Lady Hokoru smiled softly. “Yes. I suppose that’s true.” She went back to eating her food and after a moment, Vegeta did the same.
After breakfast, Vegeta went out to the carriage and headed towards the Hara manor. He looked out of the carriage in thought as two of his guards sat quietly beside him. Could it really be the same person or just a coincidence? The samurai did say that his parents died when he was young, then how come he’s still alive? Perhaps he survived the accident somehow. But, how could he when they were going at such a fast speed? Jumping out of the carriage alone would’ve killed him. Vegeta scowled at the moving landscape. He was hoping to find answers, not more questions. Wait…since Lord Akuto is the leader of the Doumei clan and the clan is after Kakarot, then that means…Akuto knows that he’s still alive. Then, why does he want him dead? Maybe the clan has rebelled against their leader…no. He wouldn’t be leader today and since Lord Koga has heard word from him, then he must still be leader of the clan.
Although, Vegeta isn’t entirely sure that Lord Akuto wants him dead. Maybe he’s looking for him and wants him to return? Vegeta remembered the night when he was first attacked by the clan’s assassins and took note of the attire. Yes. Kakarot was wearing red and white, which is what the assassins were wearing on the arms of their attire. And if red and white are their colors, then that means…Kakarot is indeed Kakarot no Mamoru. Vegeta managed to hold back a gasp at what he just found out. Why didn’t he tell him? Did he think that he wouldn’t believe him? He remembered what his mother said. They were supposed to be together. They’re supposed to be together now. Why? Why didn’t he tell him?!
He was brought out of his thoughts as they came to a stop in front of the manor. One of the guards opened the door and held out a hand for him, but he refused the hand and stepped out himself. He was about to go to the entrance when someone called out his name. “Vegeta! Over here!” He looked around for the source of the voice before he found his Master over yonder.
Lord Koga was standing next to his own carriage, which was bigger and had more guards. He resisted a sigh and made his way over to him. “Greetings, Master.”
Lord Koga smiled at his pupil. “Good morning, Vegeta. I thought it would be better to take my carriage, since it takes a while to get to Kyoto and we need all the protection we can get, no?” Vegeta nodded and tried not to scowl at the useless protection. He supposed they could be used as pawns until he got rid of the threat himself. Lord Koga waved him inside. “Come. We must hurry if we want to make good time in preparing for a plan.” Vegeta entered the carriage and his Master followed suit as four guards filled in the rest of the space that the carriage provided.
As they left the Edo province, Lord Koga couldn’t help but think out loud to himself. “My, it’s been a while since I’ve been to Kyoto.” He looked toward his pupil. “And if I remember correctly, it’s been a while for you too.”
Vegeta scowled. “Yes, I’ve been told.”
Lord Koga sat more comfortably in his seat. “Ah, so you know? Your parents probably filled you in, no doubt. Yes, they knew the Mamoru family all too well. They were such good friends.” He looked out the window thoughtfully.
Vegeta thought about asking more about Lord Akuto, but assumed that he knew just as much as his parents. He decided to keep quiet and spend his time looking at the landscape that he has long since forgotten. So far, it didn’t look much different than Edo. They passed by a few towns that seemed to be smaller or the same size as Edo. He didn’t really care, but he decided to ask something that’s been bothering him since yesterday. “Master, how come Ookami isn’t accompanying us?”
Lord Koga turned his attention to the young noble. “Well, I originally requested to speak with Lord Akuto alone, but since you made such an effort to keep peace in our area and his, I thought it’d be honorable for you to attend with me. Lord Akuto will be so surprised to see you. He’ll be so elated to see how much you’ve matured.” He smiled.
“You…think so?” Vegeta had a look of uncertainty on his features.
His Master nodded. “Oh, yes. In fact, it’s the main reason why I wanted to leave so early. So you two may catch up. It shouldn’t take us too long to come up with a plan to capture the samurai.” He turned his attention to the window again.
Vegeta’s thoughts turned into doubt. Right. That’s why all he and his father have came up with for the ceremony is what they should wear. They have a little over a week to get things prepared. How come Lord Koga and his father aren’t panicking at the short amount of time they have left to get things together? Maybe they already have it all planned out and he just wasn’t there to hear of it. No, that’s unlikely. They practically have nothing in common, so it makes sense that they won’t agree on the same thing. Vegeta’s heart sank as he realized there really isn’t that much time left. He must find a way to be with Kakarot before the day of the ceremony arrives.
A few hours later, the noble caught something out of the corner of his eye and turned to see many people passing them on the trail. He leaned to the side more to get a better look at the town ahead of them. Lord Koga noticed the movement and looked behind him. “Ah, we’re here.”
Vegeta looked in awe at the bustling town of Kyoto. It was about the same size as Edo. The interested noble had plenty of time to look at their surroundings since it took almost an hour to get through the crowd and on the other side of town where the Mamoru manor stood. Why were they always on the other side of town? Vegeta couldn’t help but notice how much bigger and more expensive the restaurants were here. However, that just told him that the restaurants must be more than just dinky hovels. He turned towards the other window on the other side of the carriage to see a small crowd of men gathered in front of a whore house. Within the crowd, there seemed to be a fairly beautiful woman being dragged inside by a big man who was yelling at her and grabbing her by the hair to force her inside. He couldn’t help but feel sorry for the woman and had this strange urge to go out and help her.
Lord Koga noticed his pupil’s line of sight and sighed. “There goes another one. It seems more and more women get forced into whore houses everyday.”
Vegeta turned his attention to his Master. “Why?” He never knew the reasoning behind why women went to whore houses except to get paid for a man’s pleasures.
He kept his attention on the seen as they slowly passed. “Because there are men out there who gamble too much and can’t pay the cost when they lose, so their wives or their daughters are sent to a whore house to pay off their debt. Others simply have no where else to go.” Lord Koga answered simply. The young noble looked back at the scene with concern. How awful. “But there’s nothing we can do about it. It’s the way life is sometimes.” His Master yawned as if he’s seen it a hundred times…and he probably has.
When they finally made it to the manor, Vegeta stepped out of the carriage in awe at how the enormous manor seemed to loom over them with the power of the person that lived inside. He slowly walked to the entrance while looking at the scenery around him as Lord Koga waited for them to be announced to the Lord of the manor. He couldn’t help but smile at his pupil. He should probably take him out more often. Lord Koga was brought out of his thoughts as the doors opened and a guard escorted them inside. Vegeta took in the scenery inside as well. It was more impressive than his manor, even his Master’s.
“Greetings, my friend!” The young noble was brought out of his musings as a deep voice greeted his Master.
“Akuto! It’s been too long!” Both shook hands and patted each other’s shoulders as they stood at arms length to look at one another.
“The years have been good to you, old friend.” Lord Akuto commented.
“I was just about to say the same thing to you. I actually think you’ve grown a little since I saw you last.” Lord Koga returned the comment.
Lord Akuto chuckled at his friend before his eyes caught a second person in the room. He gasped. “No, don’t tell me…Vegeta?” Vegeta moved his gaze toward the eyes of the person that spoke his name and was surprised when that person embraced him briefly before pulling back to study him. “Oh, my, my. It’s been unbearably long. I hardly recognize you. Look at you.” Lord Akuto looked at the young noble from top to bottom. “You’ve grown into a fine young man. Just like I pictured you.” Vegeta looked at the noble in confusion before said noble laughed. “I don’t blame you if you don’t remember me.”
Vegeta snapped out of his confusion and glanced to the side. “Yeah, that’s what I keep hearing.” He couldn’t help but study the noble himself as the man practically danced in his excitement. He stifled a gasp at how similar his clothing was compared to Kakarot’s. They both wore red and white, except Lord Akuto wore more of a ceremonial attire than warrior. Now that he looked at him more, he could tell that he and Kakarot have similar features. Their eyes were the same, their faces were similar except Lord Akuto’s looked more regal and stern, and their hair had a similar wild pattern, but Kakarot’s was more untamed looking.
Lord Akuto gasped as if just remembering something. “Oh, but where are my manners! Come in! Come in! We have much to catch up on.”

Dun, dun, dun! The plot thickens! O.o So…I was originally gonna have Turles as the uncle, but no one would believe him if he said that he and Kakarot weren’t related…so, I decided to make up my own appearance of the guy. ^^ Brilliant, no? O.o So, you should all know by now why the Doumei clan is after Kakarot. If not, go back to chapter 5 and piece it together. :p I also didn’t try very hard at Kyoto and the towns in between. >.> I just kinda…winged it…again hehe. But, hopefully there aren’t huge differences in what I wrote to what it actually is. >< Anyway, this may be the last chapter for awhile. Am now working on chapter 15, but who knows? Maybe I’ll finish it this evening and you all will have something to read tomorrow. :)
