Disclaimer: I don’t own Gundam Wing. Nor am I making money from publishing this! It’s purely for fun. I do, however, own Lea Zikamo and all the other original characters. Enough said. |
“She’s not using you?” Wufei asked five minutes into the drive back to Lea’s house. He had been brooding over the whole situation ever since he was reunited with Heero. He wouldn’t be content with Heero’s silence. “She’s too weak to fight this on her own.”
“So was Relena.” Only a hint of anger was in Heero’s voice. Otherwise, he remained staring out the passenger window.
“Relena had her reputation as a Darlian and a Peacecraft,” Wufei argued. “She still had the ability to fight.”
Heero turned from the window to pin Wufei down with a glare. “So, Lea’s inability to defend herself from all this has you pissed off? I thought you were over the weak-should-hide-so-the-strong-can-fight mindset.”
Wufei shot a glare of his own back at Heero, “I thought you left the Preventers to get away from fighting all together! You said you wanted to have a peaceful life, you hypocritical son of a bitch. The first sign of a fight and you jump right in.”
The shoe had dropped. WuFei was the kind of man who had respect for those who did as they said they would. Not do as I say and not as I do. To him, Heero should have walked away and never looked back.
“And now,” he snapped, continuing on his tirade, “You’ve signed back with the Preventers, back with Zechs! Is she really worth the hell you’re going to go through when he starts giving you assignments?”
“He won’t do that,” Heero answered calmly. “You give Zechs too much credit.”
WuFei’s jaw twitched and he fell silent. Heero figured he was mulling it over and turned his attention back to the passenger window. Instead of WuFei remaining silent, the young man growled in an agitated voice, “Well? Are you going to say something?”
Heero blinked, “What’s there to say? It’s already been said.”
His usual flippant calm manner shattered WuFei’s patience. He yanked the car to the side of the road not caring about Kayhill, who was trailing them back to Lea’s, or anyone else on the road. The car’s gears grinded to a halt as WuFei put it in park. “No! It hasn’t been said! You shouldn’t be in this.”
“And you should?” Unlike WuFei, Heero’s manner stayed unruffled like he was having an everyday conversation. “Oh, yes. That’s right. Because you are a Preventer and assigned to this and I’m not.”
“This isn’t a normal life!” he hissed.
With that, Heero’s patience snapped. He iced over. “And Lea doesn’t deserve a normal life? Just because she’s weak and not a fighter she should left in the hands of these men?” His eyes narrowed, “Just because I’m a soldier and fighting this battle, that makes me a tool to be used?”
“Then what makes this different?” WuFei challenged.
“It’s my choice, not a mission. And,” his tone darkened, daring WuFei to make something of his next statement, “I love her. I want Lea in my life.” His features softened, as if in thought, “I’ve read somewhere if two people love each enough to be life mates, then they should fight their battles together.”
A knock on WuFei’s window snapped them both back into reality. Kayhill peaked in looking worried. “What’s going on?” he asked when the window was rolled down. “One second, I was behind you. The next I’m zoomin’ past. Looked like you were having car trouble.”
WuFei shot Heero a glance that said, “This isn’t over.” To Kayhill he said, “Yeah, car trouble. But I think it’s ok. We’ll follow you to Ms. Zikamo’s house.”
Kayhill was no fool. He could tell there was something wrong but wisely stayed out of it. With a nod the sheriff headed back to his car. A few seconds of silence hung between the occupants before WuFei started up the car and guided it back onto the road. The humming of the engine was all to be heard for a while.
Then WuFei opened his mouth.
“Through sickness and health, tell death do us part…” The words were whispered so soft, that Heero had barely heard them. The sigh that followed, a defeated sounding sigh, was heard clearly. “I understand.”
“Good,” Heero growled. “If you question me again, you’ll have my fist slamming into your jaw.”
WuFei burst into laughter, earning him a questionable look from Heero. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he chuckled.

Quatre paced back and forth like a caged animal. Trowa and Duo had gone outside to survey the land and set traps. Lea had returned from her perch in the barn with Janis. Lea helped Janis to bed and then hopped into the kitchen. Relena figured it would be best if she assisted Lea with getting food together since it was getting late.
“No since on fighting on an empty stomach,” she had cheerfully said. Then added with a frown, “I wish we didn’t have to fight though.”
Quatre couldn’t help but agree. There was plenty of other ways but these men wanted Lea and were willing to kill for her. Besides, things were too tense now. The point where bloodshed could have been spared was past up when he and his friends were shot at.
His anger flared at that thought. ‘Yes… I was shot at and my wife kidnapped. Allah only knows what would have happened if…’ Quatre suppressed a shudder. He was eternally grateful to Duo for saving them. He knew he would have snapped like he did when his father was killed. To unleash such anger… frightened Quatre. He had vowed never to do it again.
Without warning, Quatre’s anger spiked. He grabbed onto the dinning room table for physical stability to the mental anguish he felt. Sadness and confusion tainted the anger but not enough to overpower it. Then, it all suddenly switched to rock solid devotion and defensiveness.
“In Allah’s mercy, Heero,” Quatre grumbled as his grip on the table tightened. “What’s going on?”
“What’s wrong with him?” Relena asked. When she had moved to his side, he knew not. She placed her hands on either side of his face to turn him to her. Her brow was wrinkled with worry. “What are you feeling?”
“He’s not in a physical fight,” Quatre explained as he sank into one of the table’s chairs. “Feels like he’s arguing.”
Lea, who had been watching all this in panicked awe, tilted her head to the side and placed her hands on her thin hips. “What the hell are you two talking about?”
Both Relena and Quatre returned Lea’s questionable look. Relena was the first to recover. “I was trying to tell you before we were kidnapped,” she started to explain. Quatre twitched at her side. “Heero and Quatre have this connection that was formed a long time ago. He can sense Heero’s emotions every now and then.”
“Really?” Lea didn’t sound like she was buying it.
Quatre sighed, “It’s true. It’s not that strong when there’s great distance between us. But…” He smiled sheepishly, “That’s how I knew he’s falling in love with you. I knew long before I arrived here.”
Lea’s heart fluttered. To know that Heero wanted her before he knew everything was a comfort. But she still wasn’t fully convinced. “Ya’ll have a phone.”
Relena shook her head, “We’re not lying.”
“Not lying about what?” Duo and Trowa walked into the dinning room. Lea still couldn’t get over how charming Duo could be. It was like Trowa but more of a playful way. Not so mysterious and dangerous.
“Oh, Quatre and Heero’s connection,” Relena answered with a shrug.
“Ah,” Trowa whispered with a smile. An amused gaze was set on Quatre, “The connection.”
“Don’t you start,” Quatre warned. He paused, eyes focusing on nothing. “He’s calmed down.”
“Good,” Duo growled plopping into a chair next to Quatre. He had reversed it so he could lean on the back of it. “I hope he’s on his way back. I want to get this shit started. I hate waiting.”
Lea didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. It all seemed so odd to her. The love of her life is an ex-Gundam pilot. Three of the five ex-Gundam pilots were now in her dinning room chatting about some mental connection between Quatre and him. Said mental connection was being talked about as if it were common place.
Nope. Odd wasn’t the correct wording. Twilight Zone. Yes. She was in the Twilight Zone.
“You won’t have to wait long.” Trowa propped himself against the wall facing them. “They’ll be here soon enough.”
The declaration made Lea visibly shiver. “I’m going to check on dinner,” she meekly said before exiting quickly.
Trowa sighed and shook his head, “At least she’s handling this.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Quatre said in a lowered voice. He watched Lea check a pot of food. “She’s strong willed but is it too much?” He shook his head and sighed.
Relena patted her husband’s shoulder and kissed him on the crown of his head. “Don’t worry so much. One of them will give.”
Quatre watched his wife in amazement as she glided back into the kitchen. She had sounded so positive of her statement that it calmed his heart. “Perhaps you’re right.”

No sound was made as he stepped up to the car hidden in the trees. Only the fake moonlight and stars were lighting his way. It didn’t matter. He was use to it. It was a good quarter of a mile from the Zikamo land. He had ran it all full tilt and wasn’t out of breath. The adrenalin flooding his veins was fueling him with more than enough energy. What he had to say was just that good.
The back passenger window of the car rolled down as he approached. The shadowy figure inside twinkled with the occasional gleam from a jewel. “You’re practically bursting with excitement,” Boss said in amusement. He waited long enough for Alistair to climb into the car before asking, “Well?”
Alistair grinned an evil grin. It made the scar on his face accent the dark sparkle in his eyes. “Yuy and Chang are not back yet. Winner, Barton and Maxwell are in the house. Motion sensors and some crude traps have been set.” The manic expression changed to one of disgust, “Knowing our idiots, they’ll set them off and we’ll never get in the house.”
“Now, now, Alistair,” Boss chastised in a fatherly tone. “There is always a way.” He pulled a phone from his pocket. “I sent you on reconnaissance to see which way our pawns should move.” Dialing a number, he added, “The game of chess can be such an enlightening experience. We must play a game. I’d like to see how you would fair.” Boss ignored the shocked look on Alistair’s face. “Get them ready,” he ordered whomever answered the phone. “Make sure they have nowhere to run. And, Damien?” He smiled charmingly, yet said in a venomous tone, “Do not harm the Prime Minister or Ms. Zikamo. They are to be brought back alive.”
“Sir,” Alistair started to say once Boss had hung up but was silenced with a raised jeweled hand.
“You and I must play,” he said sadly. “Then you wouldn’t be so clueless. Go. See that my orders are carried out.”
Swallowing his pride, Alistair asked, “And if Yuy and Chang show up?”
“Why, they die as well. Nothing is to get in our way. No more tip-toeing through the tulips.” Boss turned his attention to the “moon” and sighed, “It’s time for a blood bath.”

‘How could I have let this happen? Things have gotten way out of control! I don’t care if Dad’s thingy is what they want. This isn’t supposed to happen! They threaten my life over some damn thing? And now I’ve brought all these people…’ She closed her eyes, covering her face in her hands. ‘This is my problem. I’m sorry but it is. I have to stop this… keep him safe. He’s willing to risk everything just…’
Lea stood up, flipped on the bedside lamp switch. She paced in her room trying to figure out how to fix… everything. ‘I could leave. I could go to them and… But he would come after me. Well, then… We could all leave… But that wouldn’t work either. He’s back with them now. This is something they deal with…’
Her heart sank as she fell backwards onto the bed. Despair of never seeing the end of all this mayhem gripped her. A loud ka-boom shook the house at the same moment she landed. Lea sprang to her feet and dashed out of her room. Janis was rushing down the hall towards her. He had one arm wrapped around his ribcage while the other braced himself against the wall. He had the most determined look on his face, “Lea, they’re here.”
“No shit!” She snapped. “What’s going on? How do we…”
The last bit of her question was lost in another explosion. This time the shockwave’s origin was locatable. It had come from the back of the house. The windows facing her workshop were beginning to flicker with reddish orange light.
“Where the hell did they get that sort of fire power?” Duo demanded. He was across the hall heading into the kitchen. There was a little flick of his brown braid as he disappeared round the corner.
Shots rang out everywhere. Janis and Lea dove for the floor. Somewhere in the house, Relena called for Quatre. She stumbled into view down the hall turning this way and that looking for him in the confusion.
“Incoming!”
A streak of blond, white and blue slammed into Relena. She and Quatre thudded against the floor just as something flaming roared past them. Lea couldn’t see anything else because Janis covered her with his body. The temperature skyrocketed as hot air shot past them. Lea squeaked in terror at the sound of everything exploding around them. Thick smoke made seeing nearly impossible.
Lea shifted under Janis trying to see if it was safe to move. He wasn’t moving. She stopped as well, fear intensifying. “Uncle Janis?” she managed to choke out. Her ears were ringing from the loud bang. Despite that, there was no response from Janis. He didn’t say anything or move or even breathe. She couldn’t see his face through the fog of smoke but could tell something was on top of both of them. She could also feel her sweater becoming moist. ‘Oh… God…’
The scream of ultimate anguish that had registered in Lea’s head never escaped her lips. Her mouth was covered by a smelly cloth. Her lungs, which were barely working due to the lack of breathable air, eagerly sucked in the new air. The alcoholic smell filled her lungs. Instantly, Lea’s body lost all strength. Any pain, thoughts of fear were lost in the darkness that claimed her.

A/N: “What? Another cliffy?” *raises hands in defense* Yes. But I had to. Otherwise this chapter would have been really long. Chapter 15 to follow ASAP.
