Une gazed at Heero and Wufei for a long moment and then slid her gaze over the other four. “Davis, Barton, come here.”
They frowned but did as told. All watched in confusion as she placed them between her and the two Asians. Heero's eyes narrowed.
“Stay there,” she commanded as she took a breath. “We have had a Preventer in contact with Knight for the last two weeks.” Heero's eye twitched and she hurried on. “He's been doing odd jobs for Knight, earning his trust.”
“What kind of jobs?” Heero asked flatly.
“He sent Knight a hacked link to certain areas of the Preventers building. Knight has paid him a handsome fee to bring Chang to him.”
Heero and Wufei jumped to their feet. Shouts ringing together.
“You are not sending him to Knight!”
“You withheld information!”
Trowa and Blake were poised, ready to jump in if one of them charged. “Guys, she's your commanding officer, remember?” Blake earned two glares for his trouble.
“I had my reasons,” Une continued. “He needed a way to get to you. Everyone was on guard every time you were moved. Grant suggested that if Chang was confined in one area, it would be more believable if there was a 'lax' in attention. That way he could believably 'kill' Yuy and 'kidnap' Chang. Your reactions to being confined had to be believable, otherwise Knight might have picked up on it, and neither of you can act worth crap.”
Both stared at her, Heero's eyes wide and Wufei's jaw dropped. “Why does he want to kill Heero?”
She tried to think of a way to put it gently. “From what I can surmise... it's because you allow things from him that you didn't from Knight.”
Wufei shook his head. “How does he know?”
“There are cameras in the elevators.”
Wufei flushed, but his embarrassment quickly turned to anger. The man was determined to destroy everyone around him just to make him suffer. Didn't he realize there wasn't a day that went by that he didn't suffer? That the mere thought of the man's hands on him sent him to a shower where he scraped half his skin off. And now he wanted to take Heero from him, the only ray of light he'd felt touch him in far too long.
“I should have killed him when I had the chance,” he growled. “I should have done more than cut that bastard's dick off.”
Trowa and Blake started. “You did what?”
He looked to Blake, dark eyes furious. “Sliced it off and sent it down a disposal. Then I left his bleeding ass on the floor of that damn clinic! It was less than he deserved after days-” He cut himself off as Une's eyes widened and Heero stiffened next to him.
The Japanese man grabbed his shoulders and made him face him. “Days?”
Wufei tried to pull from the gasp. “Heero-”
“You made it sound like it was five minutes and it was over. How long did he have you tied up?”
“It doesn't matter, does it? What's the difference in whether it was five minutes or more?”
“How long?”
Wufei's precarious control over the emotions surrounding the event were beginning to slip again as they had prior to his two month drinking binge. He closed his eyes. “Please, just let it go.”
“Tell me,” he said firmly.
“Three weeks,” the whispered words sounded ripped from him. Heero tried to pull Wufei to his chest, but he pushed him away and stepped back. Onyx eyes opened without the slightest hint of life as he looked to Une. The anger, fear, and hurt seemed to have evaporated into emptiness.
“Why don't we discuss it after you've had some rest?”
“I don't need rest. I need this to be over.”
She cleared her throat. “In a few days, you will leave with Grant to go wherever Knight tells him to go. Several teams of three will be tailing and sweep in to pick him up when he shows.”
“All right.” He turned and left the room.
Heero watched him go, not knowing what to do. “I shouldn't have pressed him.”
“No,” Duo disagreed. “He needs to hash all this out now. He glossed the story over for you, which probably means he's never dealt with it. And he has to before this mission or there's no telling how he'll react when he sees Knight again. He could freeze or kill him on the spot. Go after him. Get him mad and yelling.” He smiled softly. “You're good at that.”
Heero studied him a moment. “How do you know how to deal with rape victims?”
He raised a shoulder. “You see a lot of bad stuff when you grow up on the streets. A good friend of mine was gang-raped. One day he just lost it. Got a gun, walked into the gang’s hangout and took out as many as he could before they got him.” He shook his head. “Now, I don't think Fei will go psychotic and start shooting random people, but I don't know what he'll do when faced with Knight.”
Heero nodded and went in search of Wufei, grateful that his best friend's knowledge wasn't firsthand. He found Wufei in the upstairs den, curled on the window seat and gazing out over the garden in the backyard. His forehead was pressed to the window. He didn't look to Heero, but he started speaking in a quiet, monotone voice.
“He wouldn't even let me take a shower. He'd bring in a tub of water and wash me three times a day. He was paranoid about germs. And he forced vitamins and a certain diet down me saying it would keep my skin healthy and my hair pretty and silky. Beauty was very important to him.”
Heero moved further into the room, but stopped several feet away. Wufei didn't move an inch, eyes staying on the garden.
“The first week I screamed and cursed his ancestors. The second week I alternated between screaming and begging to be let go. The third... I just couldn't take anymore. It was the only way he'd untie me... It took three days of pretending I enjoyed it before he let me go.”
“You already said you had no choice. You did what you had to do. No one can fault or blame you for that.”
“I begged for it, Heero. Asked him to do it. Sang his praises like a two dollar whore.” His expression and tone never changed.
“You're not a whore. Wufei, there was nothing else you could do. He said he'd free you once you enjoyed it. Who wouldn't take the only out they saw?”
He didn't say anything so Heero continued. “You were held against your will for weeks. Completely controlled and at the mercy of someone else. You're a survivor, Fei.”
He was silent for several minutes and Heero was concerned about his calm manner. Wufei was temper and passion and fire. Not cold and apathetic. He couldn't read anything in Wufei's face, either, and that was really starting to bother him.
“Heero, I don't want to do this. I don't want to see him ever again.”
“I know.”
“But I have to.”
Heero nodded. “I know.” He ground his teeth. This was getting nowhere. 'Get him mad and yelling' Duo had said. How was he supposed to do that?
“Why did you shrug off how bad it really was?” Wufei flinched and blue eyes narrowed, finally a reaction. “How can I help if you don't talk to me?”
“I don't want your help.”
“I didn't ask if you wanted it. What aren't you telling me?” A lot, Heero suddenly realized. Wufei had mentions baths and eating habits and his own words. But not a word about the actual rapes. He took a breath.
“How many times did he rape you?”
Wufei jerked as if slapped and stared at Heero with wide eyes. “That's-”
“Did he do it every day?”
Wufei's jaw clenched and his hand flew, but Heero caught it easily. “Talk to me.”
He jerked his hand free and jumped from the window seat. Heero grabbed his hand and Wufei spun, a loud crack of the other palm against Heero's cheek filling the room.
“Feel better?”
“You asshole! Why can't you just leave me the hell alone? I don't want to think about that crap anymore. I'm tired of remembering it. I just want to forget it.” He choked bay tears stubbornly.
“You can't move on with your life as long as the past is crushing you.”
“It isn't crushing me. I've functioned just fine up till now.”
Heero cocked his head to the side. “You were on your way to being an alcoholic.” Wufei winced. “This is killing you. Please, let me help.”
He groaned. “There's nothing you can do. You can't change the past. You can't erase what he did to me.” He looked to the side, snorting softly. “You know the stupidest part? I'm not afraid of sex. Aren't people like me supposed to be afraid of sex?”
“Then what are you afraid of?”
“You.” He looked back to Heero's shocked face. “And Duo, Blake, Quatre, Trowa. All of you are... pure. I'm afraid of... that my presence will change that. I'm afraid of being seen as weak, even though I know I am. I'm afraid of being left behind. I'm afraid that I'll come to depend too much on you and you'll leave me.
“There's no war left to fight, Heero. There's nothing left for me to focus on but missions. And if I don't have something to focus on, all I see is his red face. All I smell is his rancid breath. All I feel are the straps holding me in place while my insides are torn out.” His chest was heaving can his words pouring out on gasping breaths. He stumbled forward into Heero's waiting arms and clung to him.
“I'll never leave you,” Heero whispered into his hair as he cried. “There's nothing wrong with depending on the people around you. I'll make a promise, if you'll let me, I'll never leave you to face anything on your own. Be open and honest with me; tell me whatever it is you need to. There's nothing you can say that will change my opinion of you.”
Wufei's throat tightened and he pulled Heero tighter to himself. He was falling apart, there was no doubt of it, but, for the first time in years, he wasn't as scared of it. He leaned back slightly and looked up into deep, cobalt eyes.
“Put me together again,” he whispered.
Heero pressed his lips to Wufei's. It was soft and gentle, undemanding, but offering whatever his lover wanted. At the moment, all the Chinese man wanted was to feel safe. He pulled from the kiss and led Heero to the bedroom, pushed Heero to the bed, and curled to his side. “Just... just hold me.”
Heero wrapped his arms around him. “Forever.”

Blake glanced at the stairwell from his recline on the love seat, Duo resting his back against his chest. “Think they'll be all right?”
Duo chuckled softly. “Heero hasn't failed a mission, yet. I doubt he'll start now.”
Trowa and Quatre nodded their agreement from the sofa. Une had said Grant would come in the morning to explain the finer details of the mission and left quickly as the earlier altercation. Quatre propped his feet up on the ottoman and sighed, removing his glasses and rubbing his nose.
“I think I need a stronger prescription.”
Duo pulled his eyes from the TV and glanced to the blond. “Since when did you need reading glasses anyway?”
“Since my days turned from missions to board meetings and paperwork. I'd give anything to make a living doing something that wasn't so... boring.”
Duo smirked. “Then why don't you quit?”
The blond frowned. “It's my job.”
Violet eyes rolled. “You've got 29 sisters, man. If there isn't one or two that could do it sufficiently, then there is something seriously wrong with your family.”
Trowa raised an eyebrow. “Did you just use 'sufficiently' in a sentence?”
Duo bristled, but a smirk played at his lips. “Why, yes, I believe I did. Forgive me; was that too large a word for you? Should I get you a dictionary?”
“No,” Trowa said, smirk playing at his own lips. “I want you to give me the Webster definition off the top of your head.”
Duo tilted his head back, tapping his chin as he pretended to think. “Sufficient. Adjective. A) Enough to meet the needs of a situation or a proposed end. B) Being of a sufficient condition. Adverb: sufficiently. Qualified. Competent.” He sent Trowa a cheeky grin. “Anything else you'd like to know?”
“Yes, actually. How do you do that?”
He tapped his forehead. “Photographic memory. I read it once, and it's there for good.”
Quatre looked back to his paperwork. “I really wish I had that gift.”
Duo chuckled. “It has come in handy in the past.”
