Alphonse shot up from the hole he’d been hiding in and bolted for Cantos. The boy dove for the shade and curled up, hunkering his armored body against the rock. He felt the rumble of the dynamite and wondered where Roy was. The Colonel had gone to Cantos earlier that morning to see how the excavation was going. It had been five days since Raymond had made the mine collapse on Edward and only now the citizens of Cantos were beginning to realize that their Ray was a bad guy. Mato had found the unexploded dynamite and the signs that the mine had been tampered with. A few blamed the strangers that had come into town, but it sounded foolish to blame two young boys. It had helped that Alphonse didn’t know a thing about dynamite and he’d been with Mato throughout most of the time before the mine’s collapse. And Edward, being an alchemist of considerable skill, wouldn’t need dynamite.Al shivered. Five days. Five days he’d been without his brother. He wasn’t alone; usually far from it because Roy or Riza or Havoc were always around. But they just didn’t compare to the kind of comfort Ed could bring. There was just something about Edward that made people want to be better than they were, something that made them walk taller or be braver than anyone could be before they’d met the elder Elric.
Al couldn’t remember a time where he was separated from his brother for more than a day or two. He refused to let the niggling doubt in his head force him to despair and kept looking for another way into the mountains.
And since Roy had returned to Cantos earlier, Alphonse had started mapping a new route to take down and across the dry riverbed. Unfortunately, Al decided he must’ve stumbled too close to where Raymond was hiding for the dynamite had begun exploding.
It was only by luck that Alphonse saw the transmutation circles and avoided them as he dove down the foxhole.
He looked out from his shelter and couldn’t hear anymore explosions. Ray had to be nearby though. Alphonse looked at the open space between where he was now and the bustling village. It seemed a good mile or so between there and here; no big challenge where Alphonse was concerned, considering he had no body that needed air or fuel. He could run it and not have a problem.
But the real challenge was knowing if it was clear to run. Was Raymond out there, ready with alchemically charged dynamite, waiting for him to run! Had Raymond put out hidden mines, hoping a military truck would drive over one?
“Why does he hate Roy so much?” Alphonse asked himself quietly. “I know the Colonel explained the story with Coletta, but I can’t help but think he left something out.”
Roy was a secretive man, Alphonse knew. But even though he kept his secrets, if he was a bad man, nobody would follow him. Because he had the support of Eastern HQ, plus a few higher-ups and allies in other departments, Roy was allowed his secrets. Besides, there were things he’d tell fellow adults, not two teenage boys.
Alphonse took a deep breath and sighed heavily. He had to find the Colonel. Alphonse waited only a moment longer before making a run, the dull gleam of his armor making him a moving target if anyone was watching.
And Alphonse hoped Lieutenant Hawkeye was watching. She was the best sharp-shooter the military had to offer and managed to save the life of the boys on more than one occasion.
Alphonse screamed as the earth beneath his feet suddenly surged up and threw him a good ten feet into the air. He hit the ground, overbalanced, and fell forward, rolling shoulder over knee and coming back to his feet, running again. He heard the roar of an engine and saw the glint of a scope as a military jeep suddenly sped toward him. Alphonse looked up just in time to see a bundle of dynamite heading toward him. For a moment he panicked, because if that dynamite hit him and exploded, he could say good-bye to the mortal plane for good. Edward would find out, and he’d blame himself. He always blamed himself when Alphonse got hurt, and he still blamed himself for what happened to Alphonse when they tried to transmute their mother back to life.
Alphonse didn’t want Edward to blame himself anymore.
Riza sighted the falling explosives and as the truck when over a dune, she took the shot.
The huge armor dodged to the side and hit the ground as the bundle of dynamite exploded upon the bullet’s impact. The shockwave rushed over Alphonse, a storm of heat and sound, and dust and debris was kicked up around the poor boy.
“Brother! I’m going to make you clean every inch of my armor!” Alphonse yelled to the sky.
When the rain of dirt stopped, Alphonse surged to his feet again and ran for the military truck, able to see Riza taking aim again. Havoc was at the wheel, pushing his truck to its limits. Alphonse didn’t see Roy.
Al yelped as hands grabbed his ankles and pulled him down into a new trench. Roy put his fingers to his lips and indicated silence. Havoc’s truck stopped just at the edge of the trench, then reversed, kicking up sand and dust, speeding away back to the town. Riza slid down into the trench with her rifle a few moments later, using the cover of the dust cloud to hide her movements. The blonde woman saluting her commanding officer.
“Colonel, what’s going on?” Alphonse asked.
Riza handed Roy a new pair of gloves. As Roy pulled them on, he looked at the younger Elric. “We’ve managed to get a location for Goetz. Mostly in thanks to you, Alphonse.”
“In thanks to me?!” the boy shrieked in a harsh whisper. “He was throwing dynamite at me!”
“And because of that, we were able to get a location for him.” Riza said. “We’re going up the mountainside. One of the miners told us of an old shack that the bags of gold and jewels are taken before they’re sold. It’s isolated and hidden, never spoken of except by the men who go there to deliver the bags and retrieve them when it’s time. Keeps thieves from stealing the town’s lifeblood.”
“And if we catch Raymond, we can get him to show us another way into the mine?” Alphonse asked.
“Not exactly.” Roy said. “We’re going to take the bastard into custody, beat him to an inch of his life, and then make him show us another way into the mine.”
Alphonse shivered at the venom in the Colonel’s voice. “So what do we do?”
Roy gestured toward the right side of the trench and up at the mountain the mine was settled in. “We go up.”
Riza popped a round into her rifle’s chamber. “Alphonse, please stay behind us. You’ll be able to stop the transmutation circles, but the Colonel will engage them. I don’t want you in the line of fire.”
“But, Lieutenant, wouldn’t it be safer if I was shielding you?”
“We’re dealing with dynamite, Alphonse,” Riza said gently, “not bullets. Please, just do as I ask.”
Alphonse gave a slight nod and fell into step behind Roy and Riza, the trio keeping low as they rushed along the trench. The mountain loomed higher above them the closer they got, and Alphonse hoped whatever they were going to do up there wouldn’t get them all killed.
That included Edward.
