Vegeta laid in bed with Lyri in his arms. He hadn’t slept much the previous night. He wasn’t sure if Lyri had slept or not. If she hadn’t, she hadn’t led on that she was awake. His mind raced with the information he was given the previous night. If Lyri and Nix could find anything, he’d have all he need to save his people.
Lyri shifted in his arms and she turned to look at him. “Hey.”
“Hmm,” he said still lost in thought.
She rolled over to face him. “What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing,” Vegeta said.
“Liar,” Lyri teased.
“Make sure you don’t end up alone with Frieza tonight,” Vegeta said. That had also been weighing on his mind and now was as good a time as any to warn her.
“Why would I be alone with him?” Lyri asked.
“Just make sure it doesn’t happen,” Vegeta reiterated. He knew she wouldn’t be. He had given Nix orders the night before to stay back on Planet Vegeta and keep an eye on Lyri. But he wanted her to have her guard up as well.
“I’ll try,” Lyri told him.
“I’m serious!” Vegeta snapped as he sat up. Why wasn’t she taking this seriously?
“Vegeta, I’m acting as your intended. It would look odd if I kept my distance from him,” Lyri said.
“You being my intended is more reason to stay as far away from him as you can,” Vegeta said, “Frieza will stop at nothing to get to me. Including hurting those I care for.” He should have gone through with releasing her from this scheme. At least then he’d know she’d be safe.
Lyri placed her hand on his and gave it a little squeeze. He looked at her. She looked almost angelic with her white hair cascading over her shoulders. “I’ll keep my distance as best I can,” she promised.
Vegeta stood. “We need to get ready.” He walked into the closet and emerged minutes later wearing his royal armor over a royal blue jumpsuit. Lyri walked into the closet and opened a garment bag. She stripped and pulled on the navy dress. It hugged her curves until her hips were it flowed out in an A-line shape. The neckline ended at her cleavage and it was completely backless. She hoped it wasn’t too much for the coronation. She stepped out of the closet after putting on her shoes. She walked out to the living space, where she sensed Vegeta. He glanced at her briefly and did a small double take.
“What?” Lyri asked.
“Nothing,” Vegeta said, not taking his eyes off her.
Lyri fidgeted under his gaze. “I could change but the other dress I have really isn’t appropriate for a coronation.”
“You look fine,” he said. He walked over and offered her his arm, which she took. He led her over to the doors and before opening them, kissed her cheek. “Luck...” he muttered.
“Everything will be fine,” she whispered. She wasn’t sure who she was trying to convince more, herself or Vegeta.
They walked down to the throne room, neither one saying anything. Outside the room they heard the murmur of the crowd. “So, um, now what?” Lyri asked nervously.
“We walk in there together. We when get to my father, you step off to the side. When everything is said and done, if I cannot leave right away, you are to go with Nix,” Vegeta said. Lyri nodded. He opened the door and a hush fell over the crowd. They both walked down the aisle towards the throne. Lyri forced herself to ignore all the eyes that were on them. They stopped in front of King Vegeta and both bowed respectfully. Lyri bowed to Vegeta and stepped to the side like he told her.
“My fellow Saiyans and honored guests,” the King started, “We come here today to celebrate my son...”
Lyri tried to listen to the king but she was having a hard time. Someone was watching her. She just knew it. ‘Don’t be stupid, Lyri,’ she told herself, ‘There’s literally thousands of Saiyans watching you.’ She tried listen to the King again but she couldn’t. Her eyes met with the pink and purple alien across the way. He was studying her intently. His eyes moving up and down her body as if sizing her up. He noticed that she had caught him staring. He smiled and waved a couple fingers at her. She quickly looked away and tried to concentrate on what the king was saying. She had seen Frieza before but he had never noticed or taken interest in her and now that he had...her stomach flip flopped and a chill ran up her spine. There was applause and she clapped along with everyone else. She couldn’t focus anymore. Vegeta had turned and was addressing the crowd but she couldn’t hear him. Her eyes flicked back to Frieza and he was still watching her. She tried desperately to pay attention, but knowing that the purple tyrant was surveying her made it impossible. There was more applause. Vegeta spoke once more and another round of applause erupted from the crowd. The crowd rippled before slowly starting to disperse. She blinked and Frieza was gone.
“Come with me.” She felt someone grab her arm. She panicked slightly before realizing it was Nix. She allowed him to lead her through the crowds and out of the throne room.
“Where’s Vegeta?” Lyri asked.
“He was pulled away by the king and Paragus,” Nix said.
“Oh,” she said.
“I am to take you back to his quarters,” Nix said. Lyri nodded and followed Nix. Lyri shoved the doors to Vegeta’s quarters open and stormed inside.
“Care to explain what’s wrong?” Nix asked.
“What’s wrong is that that ice cold purple fucking tyrant was fucking watching me during the entire ceremony! I couldn’t focus on anything else!” Lyri told him angrily. She quickly moved to the bedroom. “He wasn’t even hiding that he was sizing me up! Gods, it made my skin crawl!”
"He was probably sizing up what he think is his competion..." Nix said from the living space as he leaned against Vegeta's desk.
Lyri returned from changing and plopped down on the couch. "He needs to get it through his head. Vegeta isn't and never will be interested."
Meanwhile...
“What?!” Vegeta bellowed, “You cannot be serious!”
“I can assure you, my son, I am quite serious,” the King said.
“Then what the hells were all these damn celebrations for?” Vegeta asked angrily.
“They were for you. To celebrate you. I might not be giving you the throne just yet but you still deserve to be celebrated on you coming of age,” the King replied.
“I do not understand why you refuse to step down,” Vegeta said.
“Your father feels that you are not ready. What with your rash decision making, anger issues and refusal to take a proper mate,” Paragus told him.
“I believe I am talking to my father, not you,” Vegeta snapped.
“That’s enough!" The king barked, “My reasons are my own. I feel you are not ready and that is final!”
Vegeta growled and left, slamming the door behind him. ‘That bastard,’ he thought. He sulked to his quarters and found Nix and Lyri at his desk talking quietly amongst themselves.
“I still think we should bring Bulma along,” Lyri said, “The girl is a genius and can probably get any computer there that isn't working up and running.”
“Yeah. That’d be the fastest way to get what we’re looking for,” Nix said.
Vegeta walked up behind them. Lyri turned to face him. “Hey.” She noticed that he seemed more upset that usual and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he told her, “What is your plan?”
“Plan is to head back to the facility within the next couple of days. Search the entire place from top to bottom to see what we can find. We’re also planning on taking Kakarot and Bulma to help out,” Nix said.
“Is it wise to include more people in this?” Vegeta asked.
“Well, Kakarot was here last night and, yeah, he’s not the sharpest person out there, but he probably figured out what’s going on. Somewhat anyway,” Lyri told him, “And Bulma can help with getting the computers up.”
Vegeta nodded. He wasn’t sure if he wanted the alien scientist or Kakarot to help Nix and Lyri. Not that he didn’t trust Kakarot or Bulma, but he was wary about so many people being involved.
“Are you sure you’re ok?” Lyri asked.
“I already said I was, did I not?” Vegeta snapped.
Lyri looked at Nix, silently asking if she should drop it or not.
“He’s not stepping down, is he?” Nix asked.
Vegeta grumbled, “I don’t want to talk about it.”
Lyri gently placed her hand on Vegeta’s arm and gave him an empathetic look.
“I don’t need your sympathy,” Vegeta snapped, shrugging her arm off.
“It wasn’t sympathy. It was empathy, you jackass!” Lyri snapped back. She left the two male Saiyans in the living space, yelling from the bedroom, “Why do I even try anymore?” She appeared a minute later, dress bag in hand and left, slamming the door behind her.
“Women...” Vegeta muttered, annoyed.
“What’s your next step?” Nix asked Vegeta.
“What I want to do is march back down there and kill him,” Vegeta admitted, “But seeing as I can not...I suppose we continue as we are. Hopefully you and the annoying woman can get evidence of my fathers doings and I can arrest him, charge him and force him off the throne.”
“Have you figured out the Frieza issue?” Nix asked.
Vegeta glared at Nix. “No, not yet. Since you seem so eager to get rid of him, why don’t you deal with him?”
“I’ve thought about it, but I don’t want to deal with the mess that that would leave behind,” Nix said.
Vegeta was silent. “And if I switched your orders to that?”
“I don’t think the planet would be ready for that war,” Nix replied, his face dark and daring Vegeta to try it.
Vegeta smirked at him and turned back to the small map Nix had sketched out on the desk. “This will work and we’ll get to Frieza when we get to him.”
