Twigs and leaves crunched under foot as Ozuma ran through the forest behind his house. His feet tripping and stumbling along the way. His breaths panting out harshly from over exertion. He seemed to be running from someone- or something as fast as he could.
"Heeheeheeheeheeheeheeheehee!" Giggles someone that is out of eye shot. "Run! Run!" The female voice shrieks with it's high pitched tone.
Aside from his own heavy foot steps, Ozuma heard another set of feet running beside him, turning his head he was shocked to see a woman. THE woman in fact, Mrs. Iwakawa, running along beside him. He tried to move away from her, but his foot wouldn't budge in the opposite direction as he continued to hurry forward.
There was something different about Mrs. Iwakawa. She looked human- normal actually. Her gray skin now fleshy colored, her usually tangled hair now flew loose and free in the breeze as though it had been freshly washed not long ago. She actually could have been pretty. If in reality she weren't a psychotic killer.
"Aaah!" The woman cried out as she stumbled to the ground.
"Serena!" Called a man a lot closer than Ozuma knew anyone was. Turning his head he looked around for the man, but his body seemed to be moving downward as if to help the woman to her feet.
"Just leave me!" She screamed.
"I won't leave you." Ozuma heard himself saying.
Am I dreaming? The boy suddenly wondered.
He felt out of body like he were in the dream but at the same time he was watching it. Looking down, Ozuma sees Mrs. Iwakawa looking up at him desperately, her eyes pleading with him to stay, though she was telling him to go.
I must be inside the man's body...
"Peter, just go!"
But he wouldn't budge, instead he began to laugh! Peter raised his fist and punched his wife right on the cheek!
Ozuma was horrified. Why would he do that to his wife!?
Whoever it is behind them had gotten closer. Ozuma could hear the tiny giggles advancing on them. But the couple remained where they had stopped. Peter continued to beat on his wife, bashing her repeatedly on her head over and over. Punching her, leaving large bruises on her fragile body. He truly is insane!
"Heeheeheeheehee!" Howled the little voice behind them. It sounded so familiar... but the woman was screaming... if the laughter he had been hearing wasn't from her, then that means it was...!
The couple are running again. They had stopped fighting like it had never started and now they were over come with pure terror. Ozuma could feel Mr. Iwakawa's chest rising and falling with stress and fear. His need to get away was apparent. Peter had his hand on his wife's arm practically dragging her weeping body along with him.
"Run! Run!" A tiny voice screamed.
"Ignore the words, it's in your head." A voice sang, a sweet voice that sounded motherly. But no one in the dream was singing, it sounded like someone outside of the dream.
The Iwakawa's fell to the ground again, this time they clawed at the earth, crawling forward because they were sure they had no more strength to run. Ozuma's vision is so badly blurred he can't make out a thing in front of him, or maybe that was because of the fog that seemed to be incasing the forest. Darkness, he could tell that much, swarmed around him.
"Ignore the shadows under your bed." The voice went on singing.
The person behind them picked up their pace until they were right on top of them! Ozuma could feel the tiny fist beating down on the man, trying to roll him over but all he saw was dirt beneath him as he struggled to stay on his stomach. Had his wife started to attack him- like he had with her? Ozuma turned his head, trying to see the woman through the heavy darkness and fog. He could see her clearly now; she lay on the ground with her face turned toward his but she wasn't moving.
"Serena?" Peter held out a hand to her, he touched her face... and to Ozuma's horror- her eyes were missing!
The man's fingers shook when he realized what had happened, her eyes had been pulled from her head! Bits of blood and glass, from their fight earlier, clung to his fingers as he was rolled over onto his back and began to claw at the offender.
Serena was over him, trying to pull his eyes out! No, she's dead. That must mean?
Peter began to laugh hysterically again as his eyes were pulled out of his head. Ozuma could feel the veins as they were being broken away. His eyes stung badly from the dirt on the offenders hands. Their was black, at first, then a peek at the sky before his vision was completely ripped away from him.
"Your mommy is here and daddy is too..."
The next thing Ozuma felt was water filling his mouth, his lungs, his body. Something else bumped into him as he plunged downward into the water. A hand touched his cheek gently, it was Serena! She wasn't dead after all! But just as soon as the gentle touch was felt it became rougher and her nails dug deep into his skin.
"Run Ozuma... Run... Or she'll get youuuu..."
Ozuma was gasping for air, he struggled and fought against sinking to the bottom of the lake, he struggled against the woman trying to either tear his face off or simply touch it, but he was losing too much blood from his eye sockets and he was so suffocated from the water inside of him that he just let himself go.
Outside of the dream, Ozuma's hands flail wildly as he smacked the water from his face, he could feel it. He could feel moisture outside of the dream.
Jumping up out of his sleep gasping, Ozuma looked around. He looked at his hands, shocked to see that they were covered with blood. Reaching up he touched a warm patch of blood under his nose. It must be from when he ran into the shed. He sighed with relief, as he became more aware of his surroundings. Everything was as he left it, he could see his door, the dresser- wait a minute, he can see! Someone had turned on the lamp beside his bed!
A dark figure rocked in front of the closet door calling his attention. Ozuma knew it was too late to pretend to still be asleep, but that didn't mean he had to make any more sudden movements. But the man didn't seem to care, he just stood there beside the bed, his empty eye sockets staring deeply into the light of the lamp. A blank expression on his face.
Ozuma lay there on his back, wondering if Peter could really see him or not? His eyes were gone, that meant instant blindness... But then how did they see him? Maybe it wasn't him they were seeing at all. Maybe they could just feel when a light was on so they'd go to it. And the couple is so crazy they attack him just because he's there. He had to know.
Raising his hand, he waved it idly... The man did nothing. Being brave, Ozuma sat himself up. The man seemed to sway a bit, but he didn't attack him. Looking at his lamp, Ozuma frowned, he hadn't been in the dark for two days and his vision was already beginning to slip. Reaching over, he went to turn off the lamp to get rid of the man once and for all. But on the way up his hand hit the sidetable.
He winced in pain, drawing his hurt hand to his mouth.
The man moaned as he hurried around the side table over to the bed.
"Aaa!" He grabbed for Ozuma, catching him around his face.
The boy's cheek burned where Serena had cut him from before. He didn't seem to be trying to kill him, it was strange, Peter was instead ramming his head into Ozuma's over and over again. Making straining sounds in his throat as though he has forgotten how to speak. The boy is literally trapped between the headboard and this man who is attacking him.
The Balaji boy cried out in fear and pain as a headache began to come on. When the skin on his forehead broke, he knew he had to spring into action. Blinking one eye open and closed to avoid getting the blood that leaked from his forehead into them, he reaches to the left going for the lamp. If he could just maybe turn it off or... knock it off the table, he would be fine.
It seemed like, Peter, had read his mind. His grip slipped from his face to Ozuma's arms holding them at his sides.
Ozuma had tears in his eyes as he tried to struggle free. "Let me gooo!" Beginning to feel faint, Ozuma's eyes closed for a brief second, if the man didn't stop bashing himself into his head, Ozuma was positive he was going to black out.
Think! Think! When Peter's head came back down at him, Ozuma opened his mouth and bit down on his nose.
He clenched his teeth in so hard he felt the enamal crack. The man let go of him just long enough to allow Ozuma to get at the lamp, which he shoved as hard as he could off the little table. The cord snagged in the wall and it dangled in the air, still on. But the lamp shade fell free to the floor.
Dammit! He reached down to pull the plug free but the man was in his face again.
Ozuma, luckily, moved out of range. With his bare foot he stomped on the light bulb breaking it under his weight. The moment the lights went out, the man disappeared. Ozuma blinked the tears from his eyes, scrunching down onto the floor ready to cry in defeat. He sniffles hard as he pulls glass from his foot. It didn't hurt nearly as much as the feeling of being alone in this situation did.
I need to make sure this place is dark enough before morning. He thought warily. Standing, making sure to support his weight on the foot that isn't injured. He started for the hall but froze when the light came on by itself.
Zeo's words went through his mind about no one turning on the lights, and how the front door was open when they got there. They were at it again, somehow, the couple figured out how to turn the lights on and off anytime they want to. They're messing with him! They could probably do it all this time and were just waiting until they were alone with him so they could do it. But he was through being a child, and through being afraid. Grabbing his flash light, Ozuma ran into the hall. The man, the woman, Dawn or- whoever it is, was going down.
A black head of hair appeared at the top of the stairs. It's the woman for sure. Raising his flash light over his head, he charges at her. Then it was as if everything had started to go into slow motion...
His mother's face became visible just as he brought the flash light down onto her forehead! Losing her balance, she began to fall back. Ozuma widened his eyes in realization of who this person really is. Reaching out for her, his hand didn't make contact, it was too late. Tsugani was falling down the stairs and to his surprise a hand to his back caused him to fall as well.
He tumbled head over heels and sideways, all the while he kept getting glances at who was at the top of the stairs. The woman, Serena, had pushed him. A smile graced her face held there long enough for Ozuma to see before she vanished. The light in the hall went out.

The hospital surprisingly wasn't busy that night. The ambulance had gotten to his home at a moments notice, helping him and his mother to the hospital. Ozuma didn't know for how long they were laying there on the floor; his mother passed out and he fell on top of her, his face pressed onto her stomach. She made no sound upon his impact and he was sure she was dead or very very hurt.
Crawling to the living room he grabbed the phone and dialed for the hospital.
"You're lucky you both didn't pass out." His nurse was saying as she patched up the bruise on Ozuma's forehead that the man had caused. She had already patched up the cuts on his cheek. "Who knows how long you could have been laying there until someone found you." She went on.
The emergency room had a few people in it, but not enough so that he and his mother couldn't be looked at right away. Ozuma was in the waiting room, waiting for news about his mother. He had come out of the fall with a bump and a bruise but his mother had gone unconscious. The doctors said it happened before she fell, which only meant that it was his fault because he had hit her over the head with his flashlight. He felt so badly. His mother had to have seen what he did, and she would hate him for it. He didn't blame her, but he at least hoped he could say he didn't mean to and is sorry.
The nurse must have seen where he had glanced, because she smiled saying. "Don't worry, your mother should come around in an hour or so. The bump wasn't very serious."
He nods, staying quiet. He didn't want to be calmed and soothed by this woman, Pamela Tano, her tag read. He wanted his mother to do it, or his father. An idea snapped into his head.
"How on earth did you both fall down the stairs, little guy?" Nurse Tano asked.
"Can I use your phone?"
The nurse blinked at his odd request, then steered him to the payphones. "You mean this one?"
With a nod Ozuma took the receiver from her. "Thank you." Dialing the number of his father's phone, Ozuma waited out the rings.
"Hello?"
"Dad." It was as if a flood gate had been opened up, Ozuma just started to cry.
The nurse took such pity on him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders giving them a light rub. "It's okay. Don't cry... your mother will be fine." Taking her phone from the sobbing boy, she held it to her ear since Ozuma could no longer seem to speak. "Mr. Balaji? This is nurse Pamela Tano from Tokyo general. Your wife and son are here, due to a fall down the stairs at home."
Ozuma listened to the woman talk, and he tried to compose himself. He wanted to speak to his father before the woman hung up on him.
"Yes, you'll be right over as soon as you can." She looked at Ozuma. He seemed able to talk now so she hands the phone back. "I'll check on your mother."
Watching her walk away, Ozuma took his phone call. "Dad I miss you, and mom and I need you. Please come back home soon."
"I'm already on my way out the door," he sounded like he were moving around rather quickly. "Ozuma, what happened? Is your mother ok? Are you ok?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just got a bump, but mom isn't awake yet..." He sighed. "I'm sorry... I'm sorry," He felt tears again.
"Hey son, don't cry. It's not your fault." His father's voice was trying to calm down from the unseen hustle he was in to leave.
Work had ended over there and he had done what he needed to. He planned to come back the next day but he needed to get a plain ticket as soon as he could that leaves for tonight- even if he had to buy it from someone.
"It is my fault..." He wept, feeling guilty. The nurse came back into view and she waved him in. "I have to go, mom just woke up."
"I should go too, Ozuma tell your mother I'm on my way." Himani asked. "Alright?"
"Yeah," the boy nods. Hanging up the nurses phone, he walks to his mothers room and hands it back to her. "Thanks again."
"You're welcome," Nurse Tano put her hand on the top of his head and walked him. "She's groggy but she asked for you."
"Thank you." He walks into the room, his head hung low. He couldn't look his mother in the eyes after what he had done.
"Ozuma. Come on over here, honey," she held out her hands. "Are you all right?"
"I just... got a bump on the head." Tears streamed down his cheeks once again. He'd be bone dry by the end of the night.
"Aaawww, get over here." The boy walked over to his mother and wrapped his self in her embrace. "I'm sorry, mom. I didn't mean to hit you. I thought you were someone else."
"I know, I know and it's okay." She moved his face up to look at her. "I'm not mad at you... I wouldn't be." Tsugani laughed a bit, hugging her son again.
"Really?"
"Of course," she kisses him on the head. "Ozuma, I can understand how you thought I was someone else, I came in later than I said I would. You must have thought I was a burglar or something. Not to mention I didn't call for you, I thought you were at the sleep over."
Ozuma remained quiet, waiting for his tears to subside.
"Well, the party was fun." She tried changing the subject. "I met so many people, I think I like Max's mother and Mrs. Kon the best, they had the most interesting things to say."
Ozuma wiped his eyes, smiling faintly. "Like what?"
Tsugani smiled, "That's my boy. They went on about the neighborhood, and the families that live there. We talked about that new Eriko Shimata movie, we all loved it. And then we ate giggling like school girls over past crushes."
"Mom?"
She only laughed and messed up her son's hair. "I'm allowed, your father hangs my moon."
"Speaking of dad, he says he's on his way home." He re-positioned himself on the bed. "He said he's gonna find an earlier flight."
"That's good, I think we both had our share of missing him." She hugged her son again. "And don't worry, mother's honor, I won't tell him what happened this morning."
"This morning?" He asks.
"It's around three."
"Three?!"
"Don't worry, I asked the nurse to call Max's mother to come pick you up."
"Max..."
"You need to get some sleep, you're becoming jumpy lately." She frowned. "I'm worried about you. And I'll be home as soon as I get out of this place, then we can have a picnic in the park with your father."
"No macaroni salad this time."
Tsugani raised her hand, "scouts honor." Blinking she thought a moment. "By the way, how was the sleep over?"
"Um... it was fine."
"Good, I'd hate to see you fighting with your friends."
"I'm not." He looked away from her feeling guilty. He doesn't have the heart to tell her that he never went over there.
There was a knock at the door, calling their attention. "Mr. Balaji, your ride is here. A Mrs. Tate, she said her name is."
"I have to go... Are you sure you wouldn't rather have me stay?"
"So you can eat my breakfast when they bring it," she teased. "No chance, you go on. Have a good time with your friends. I'll be fine."
"Okay." Ozuma kissed his mother on the cheek. "Bye mom."
"Bye sweetie." Clapping her hands together, she remembered. "And 'Zuma? When you eat late night snacks please put your plate in the sink for me. I don't wanna feed the bugs."
"I don't eat..." He couldn't finish the sentence, he knew his mother would look at him like he were crazy. "I'll remember."
"Thank you," with one last hug, she let him go.
Ozuma pulled away, sadly, and walked out of the room with the nurse. He was glad his mother was all right but he still felt badly for what he had done. He felt even worse for the way he had treated Max last night. He hoped he could at least make it up to him. Today is gonna be a long day. The only good part is he's out of the house. But he could only imagine what the couple would do with him gone.
