The sky was getting lighter, Duo was certain. If they*d been back at St. Toby*s with its open view, he*d have seen pink and orange streaks creeping up from the horizon. Instead, he and Trieze were surrounded by trees which were steadily becoming more distinct, and by glimpses of sky shading from black to gray. Before, while he*d been hurrying in the opposite direction, he*d played a mental game with himself, saying, "If I get to here before the sky starts to lighten, then I*ll be able to reach Heero in time." He said it just beyond the edge of the clearing where he*d left him, giving himself ample time to struggle with getting the shackle off. He*d said it further and further out, having to assume the shackle would be easier and easier to remove. He*d said it the last time at a point where he*d have had run to run faster than he*d ever run before and where the shackle would have to drop off at a touch.
But now he and Trieze had not even reached that point yet, and as the sky paled he was face with the certain knowledge taht there was no way he could reach Heero in time.
"It*s not fair!" he cried out, and Trieze gave him a wary look. It wasn*t fair if Heero died from helping him. "Hurry up!" he told Trieze, though they were both panting already.
He stopped to shift the torch to his left hand.
"Hurry up!" he came back to tell him.
Trieze caught hold of his arm. "Why the rush?" he demanded.
"Not now." Duo tried to shake him loose, but he*d been put off and ordered around long enough
"Why the rush?"
"Let go of me!" He was being foolish, he knew it but couldn*t help himself. Trieze wasn*t preventing him from getting to Heero in time-there was no time. And yet to stand here bickering with the wheelwright while Heero died alone....as he had been afraid he would...As..
The realization struck Duo that Heero would have no way of knowing that he had even tried. For all he knew, Duo may have never intended to return. Could he think that of him? Yes he could, for, really, that would have been the most sensible thing for him to do, it would have been the dragon thing to do, and he remembered the _expression on his face. "Heero!" he shouted with all his might, still trying to pull free of Trieze. "I*m coming!" The important thing was not to convince him that Duo reach him in time; the important thing was to let him know Duo was coming back for him.
But it was hopeless in either case. His voice could no more travel those extra miles to the clearing than he could.
"Boy..." Trieze shook him.
With his free hand, he slapped Trieze.
Looling more startled than hurt, he loosened his grip just as he once more tugged, and he tumbled into the weeds by the side of the path. This was the fourth time this night that he found himself sprawled on the ground. There wasn*t time to scramble to his feet and elude Trize, who was even now coming toward him; the best he could do was to once again yell Heero*s name from where he lay, flat on his back.
Just as he opened his mouth, he heard faintly: "Duo."
It was impossible. There was no way Heero could yell loud enough from the clearing that he could hear him here.
Only his imagination told him otherwise.
But Trieze had paused mid-stride, his head cocked, listening.
"Duo," Heero*s voice called again, fainter, but this time he was waiting for it.
And suddenly Duo knew: of course he hadn*t followed his instructions-he NEVER followed his instructions. Instead of staying in the clearing searching for the key, he had started to come after him.
He jumped to his feet and began running down the path, Trieze right behind.
He found Heero sprawled in the middle of the road, moments away from where he had given up. Without pausing to think, he threw his arms around him and gave him a hug and kiss him lovingly, simultaneously trying to get Heero to sti up so that Trieze could more easily get to the shackle.
He seemed barely conscious and sagged heavily against him.
"There*s not enough time," he murmured weakly.
"Everything*s all right," Duo said. "Trieze is here to help."
That got Heero*s eyes to open. Duo felt the muscles in his back and shoulders tighten.
Trieze remained out of arm*s reach, watching everything suspiciously. His torch cast flickering shadows onto their upturned faces.
There wasn*t time to explain it all. Above, the sky was getting pin, and in the forest around them songbirds roused themselves to greet the dawn. "Heero," he said, mindful of his promise, "it*s all right. Trieze and I have come to an agreement. He*s a partner now.
"Trieze?"" He spat out the name.
Duo gave his shoulder a rough shove. "Enough! I told him I wouldn*t let you hurt him."
His _expression shifted to something he couldn*t recognize, his dragon look. But then he said again, "There isn*t enough time."
Trieze must have taken that as agreement, for he handed Duo the torch and pulled the file from his belt. "This is not as you led me to believe." he grumbled. "He was supposed to be fastened to the stake."
"Just hurry up," Duo said. He lifted Heero*s right arm and saw that the wrist and hand were bleeding and swollen.
"Oh God...Hee-chan."
Despite his queasiness at the open wounds, he tightened his hug around Heero*s shoulders to reassure him. Heero shook his head, but he had no idea what he was trying to tell him.
Trieze raised his eyebrows when he saw the arm, but wordlessly set file against shackle.
Heero flinched at the touch of the metal, sucking in his breath with a hiss.
Of course it had to be iron to cut through iron, but he hadn*t thought of it.
*I*m sorry Heero. I*m so so sorry.*
Trieze looked up, but only said, "Hold the torch steady."
He pressed down hard and began moving the file back and forth in a sawing motion.
Duo listened for the snap of metal separating, but there wasn*t one. The file put a small dent into the edge of the iron band, nothing more.
Heero pulled away from him. "This isn*t going to work," he told him, his breathing strained and unsteady. "There isn*t time. Don*t touch me. You*re too close."
"Don*t push me away Heero."
"What*s going on?" Trieze demanded, sitting back on his heels.
"Just cut the shackle." Duo tightened his hold on Heero. After a moment*s hesitation, in which Duo watched the sky take on a whole new hue of pink, Trieze once again placed the file against the iron band. Duo saw the cords on his neck stand out with the strain, and it seemed his teeth must crack he had them set so tight; but after a massive effort, the file hadn*t cute quite halfway through.
Heero had his eyes closed as he fought a wave of pain. Trieze flexed his fingers and wiped his hands on his tunic, then once again gripped the file*s handle. Grunting with concentration, he cut father into the iron.
This time Duo thought he was going to make it. But not quite. He stopped just short of severing the band. "Damnation," he muttered, blowing on the palms of his hands.
Before Trieze could take up the file again, Heero moaned and doubled over.
Duo cast a quick glance at the sky, which showed a hint of blue amidst the pink. He tried to get Heero to straighten, but he pushed him away. "No time." he gasped.
Trieze was suddenly standing up, backing away. He held his hands out, indicating he*d had enough. "That*s it," he said. "I*m not getting any closer."
Duo dropped the torch and held Heero to him as his eyes filled up with tears. And then he snatched up the file. There was jsut a sliver holding the band together. Surely he could manage that. Heero was fighting him, and it was only the fact that he was so weak that allowed him to take his hand and saw the file back and forth on the damaged shackle. He closed his eyes against the strain of pressing, pressing, pressing.
Heero jerked his arm back at the same instant the band snapped, at the same instant the first ray of the sun fell on his face, at the same instant something slammed into him and threw him, yet again, to the ground.
He opened his eyes to see bits of cloth falling through the air, settling on the ground. *Oh no,* he thought, *God please no...* He closed his eyes quick.
But then he heard something.
And awful cry. Like a huge bird of prey.
Duo jerked his head up in time to see the dragon clear the top of the trees, sunlight glinting on its cobalt scales. Then with another fierce cry, it disappeared in the direction of the sun.
So much, he thought, of what he thought of him getting a new partner.
Trieze made a quick sign of the cross. Then he stood, shading his eyes, starting into the sky. "Yes, well, and thanks to you, too." he shouted into the morning light.
But of course there was no answer.
