Lord Akuto guided them into one of his many lounges as he took a seat in a comfortable red chair and gestured for his guests to do the same. Each took a seat in an exact replica of Lord Akuto’s chair on either side of him. All three chairs were close together as Vegeta and Lord Koga sat across from each other and Lord Akuto sat at their side. He ordered them some tea while they visited. “So Vegeta, I hear you’re getting married to Ookami. Such a good young man. He’ll make an excellent leader. You both will.” He smiled at the young noble.
Vegeta tried not to look disappointed. “Thank you, Sir.”
“I can’t wait until the ceremony. It’s always something to see two houses unite.” Lord Akuto went on as Vegeta interrupted his musing.
“You’re…coming?” He looked a bit shocked.
Lord Akuto looked to Lord Koga for a moment before turning his attention back to Vegeta. “Well, of course. I wouldn’t want to miss such an event. Not to mention it would be a fantastic opportunity to see your parents again. How are they doing?”
“They…are doing well.” Vegeta tried not to look guilty when Lord Akuto said he would attend the ceremony. It would be a shame to disappoint him when the time comes.
Lord Akuto seemed pleased. “That’s good to hear. I’ve been so busy with trying to run the family business that I haven’t had the chance to visit them.”
Vegeta hesitated before answering. “…I’m sure they understand.”
Lord Akuto thought about it for a moment. “Yes. I’m sure they do.” A moment of silence ensued before he brought up another subject. “How’s the assassin business coming along? I hear you’re one of the best in the country.” He seemed proud as he said the words.
Vegeta smirked and decided to put on a show. “Yes, that’s what I hear as well. But it’s not fair to rank one assassin above all others. We work together as a team and it’s the safety of the community that matters most.” An over-the-top grin replaced his smug features.
Lord Akuto seemed to notice the act as a sour look overtook his features and it was quickly replaced with a cheeky grin of his own. “That’s true, but one can’t ignore true greatness when one sees it.” Lord Koga didn’t notice the exchange as he sat with a smile while they conversed.
Vegeta resisted the urge to roll his eyes and decided to change the subject. “So, how are things with the Doumei clan? You seem awfully busy chasing that samurai.”
Lord Akuto’s grin dissipated. “Speaking of which, I want to know about your encounter with him and the recent information that you found.” Suddenly, he was all seriousness as he decided to get down to business.
Vegeta thought of this as a perfect opportunity. “First of all, I would like to know why you’re after him. He must’ve done something for you to chase him throughout half the country.”
Lord Akuto was caught off guard at the question and thought about his answer while he looked to Lord Koga, who also seemed interested to know the answer. “Well, he stole something from me. It was a necklace passed down from my father. It is a family heirloom and costs hundreds or more to a common peasant such as the one who stole it. But to me, it’s priceless.”
Vegeta narrowed his eyes at the answer. “I see. So, you want to kill the samurai and get it back.”
“Right.” Lord Akuto answered with assurance.
“How do you know he hasn’t traded it in already?” Skepticism seeped into Vegeta’s words.
Lord Akuto seemed a bit stumped. “I…have spies who keep a constant watch on him. My assassins then attack when he’s off guard.” He seemed proud of his answer.
Vegeta still wasn’t believing it. “Then, how come your spies don’t just kill him on the spot? Don’t they always keep themselves hidden? That way, they can attack without being detected.”
Lord Akuto was a bit put off. “Well…”
Vegeta went on. “Honestly, I don’t see how so many of your assassins died if the samurai is just a common peasant.”
“W-Well…obviously he’s a very skilled samurai-”
“And if the samurai didn’t pawn the necklace, then surely he’s keeping it for some reason. Maybe you stole it from him? And what if he did try to trade it for something? Would your spies or your assassins swoop in and stop him in front of the public eye? Or would they wait until he’s alone, just so they can order him to get it back?”
“Vegeta!” Lord Koga decided to interrupt his pupil’s ranting. “How could you even consider Lord Akuto of theft? He’s our ally. We came here to help him, not to interrogate him.”
Vegeta’s tense body slowly relaxed as he eyed the suspicious noble. He sighed. “Forgive me, my Lord. Sometimes I forget where I am and who I’m talking to.”
Lord Akuto relaxed as well at the apology. “Yes. I suppose it can be hard to be one person at a particular line of work and a completely different person at another. I can see now why you are one of the best.” He forced a smile.
“You’re too kind.” Vegeta forced one as well.
After that rough encounter, they moved on in how they can catch the samurai. Vegeta said little in this conversation. He wanted no part in capturing the man he loved, unless it was to keep him at his side. Lord Koga noticed his silence and tried to include him in, but Vegeta only answered in one word sentences or didn’t reply at all. When night was starting to fall, Lord Akuto suggested for them all to stay for dinner, since it’s been so long and all. He also insisted for them to spend the night. Lord Koga was having second thoughts about the invitation, since they still had a lot to do before the ceremony. However, Lord Akuto insisted on helping him with some of the arrangements. It seemed like he really wanted to be a part of it.
Vegeta stood from his seat and resisted the urge to stretch his sore muscles from sitting down all day. He made his way toward the dining hall while following Lord Koga and Akuto. They were still in a heated discussion about how to capture the samurai, since Lord Koga wants to capture him for questioning, but Lord Akuto wants to finish the samurai so he wouldn’t have any chances to kill anyone else. It seems that those two didn’t think alike as well. How Lord Akuto was going to help the ceremonial plans? Vegeta didn’t know. When they were all seated in the dining hall, the conversation calmed somewhat and then was completely forgotten as they ate. They made small conversation as they ate and Vegeta couldn’t help but feel that he must do something to get them to leave Kakarot alone.
“Lord Akuto, I would be more than glad to help you in your search for the samurai. If the rumors are indeed true, then he should still be in Kanazawa until a price is on his head.” Lord Koga already filled Lord Akuto in with the details of Vegeta’s findings.
Lord Akuto looked to the young noble and studied him for a moment with narrowed eyes. Vegeta couldn’t help but feel that the Lord wanted to say no. “Oh, no, no. I couldn’t possibly let you do something so dangerous. After all, you are to be wedded soon. It would be a shame if something happened to you before then.” He looked at what he was eating as he answered.
“I agree. There have been too many close calls as it is.” Lord Koga added, then turned to his pupil. “In fact, I’m dismissing you from your duties until you and Ookami are united.”
Vegeta was speechless. “You mean…I’m no longer a part of the Shinobi clan?”
Lord Koga almost choked on his food. “Oh, no. You’re just on temporary leave until you are wedded. Although afterwards, you may not have much to do with the clan anymore since you won’t be able leave Ookami’s side.”
No, no, no! How can he help Kakarot if he’s not on the inside knowing what’s going on? “What-”
“Now, now, Koga. He has proven himself rather useful. Are you sure you’re not dismissing him too soon?” Lord Akuto decided to defend the young noble.
Lord Koga nodded. “Yes. He has put himself in danger too many times and too many times I have worried about something happening to him. The stress is too overwhelming and the ceremony itself is a handful. Not to mention I have a clan to run.” He gave Vegeta a pointed stare.
Vegeta looked down at his food hopelessly. He didn’t care if his Master was trying to keep the world from ending. How will he help Kakarot now? He turned towards Lord Akuto and set a determined look on his features. “Lord Akuto, may I speak with you?” He glanced at his Master. “In private?”
The two lords looked at each other before Lord Akuto nodded and stood. Vegeta did the same as the Lord turned to the other. “Koga, feel free to make yourself at home. We’ll be back shortly.” He turned and left the room as Vegeta followed. Lord Koga watched them leave before finishing his meal.
They went into Lord Akuto’s study room and made themselves comfortable. Well, Lord Akuto did anyway, while Vegeta stood. “I know the samurai’s related to you.” Lord Akuto seemed shocked for a moment, then it passed as he waited for the young noble to continue. “What I want to know, is why are you after him?” He crossed his arms as he waited for an answer.
Lord Akuto’s expression didn’t change and sighed. “When I found out that he was alive, I wanted him to return home, but for some reason, he refused. I’ve been sending out my assassins to retrieve him since then. But…what went from coming along nicely, went to force. I need someone to take over once I’m gone and Kakarot needs to know how to run the clan once I do.” He leaned forward in his seat when he finished.
Vegeta looked away as he pieced together another question. “I heard that he and I were supposed to…be together. If he does come back, will there be another noble for him to be wedded to?” He faced him as he finished.
Lord Akuto smiled, knowing the real reason behind the question. “Will you two still work out or will he have to marry someone else, you mean?” Vegeta didn’t answer, but waited for one. “He will most likely find another, since you are already spoken for.” Lord Akuto rested his head on his hand in a bored fashion. He hid a smirk when he saw how disappointed Vegeta appeared to be.
“I see.” However, a determined expression overcame his features once again. “I would still like to help you. Perhaps…I can convince him to come back. But…must you have him a wanted man? Surely you must explain this to my Master, otherwise he may kill him.” He gestured toward the dining hall where he assumed his Master still was.
Lord Akuto smirked. “I will tell him. However, whether or not you will be a part of this is clearly up to him and since your life is very important to everyone right now, I would listen to him if I were you.”
Vegeta scowled. “Well, you’re not me and I refuse to become useless. I refuse to stay a prisoner and an obedient dog as what’s left of my freedom is stripped away from me. Perhaps I wasn’t too clear in my actions. I shall talk to him.” He left without another glance at the smirking Lord.
As Lord Akuto left his study, he went up to one of his guards that stood nearby. “Tell the clan to keep a closer eye on Vegeta. I want a constant watch on him.” The guard saluted at the order and obliged as he smirked and watched the guard do as he was told. He made his way back to the dining hall, just in time to hear Vegeta and Lord Koga arguing.
“You will no longer have any part in this mission and that’s final!” Lord Koga bellowed as Vegeta refused.
“I can’t believe you’re taking me out when I’m doing a better job than any other individual in the clan! You have more information about the target thanks to me! Do you want to be ignorant about the samurai and have him come while you’re asleep? What if he’s no longer in Kanazawa and is doubling back over here? Or worse yet, in Edo?” Vegeta didn’t feel the need to explain to his Master that Kakarot was related to Lord Akuto. He felt that that was more of the uncle’s job than his own.
Lord Koga scoffed. “Lord Akuto said that he has spies that keep an eye on the samurai, so we know where he is. The problem is getting rid of him.” He crossed his arms.
Vegeta fumed in his place as he sneered at his Master. He then turned his back on him and left the room, planning to head to bed early. Lord Koga sighed in exhaustion and sat down from his standing position, then rested his head on his hand. “Just like his father. Always throws a tantrum whenever he doesn’t get his way.”
Lord Akuto smiled knowingly and sat down next to his long time friend. “Well, what else can you expect from a strong-willed person such as Hokoru? You know his son is bound to be the same way. I doubt they get along.”
Lord Koga smiled in return. “You’re right. They’ve been arguing a lot more recently. It could be because of the ceremony. It’s had Hokoru on edge and Vegeta to be overwhelmed with stress. We’ll be lucky to get him and Ookami together at this rate and we’ve hardly got any preparations done.” He sagged in his seat. “I don’t know how I’m going to be able to pull this off by the end of the month.”
Lord Akuto became determined. “Why, I’ll be more than happy to carry some of the burden. After all, it’s the least I can do to make up for my absence. I could even go back with you and stay a while until the preparations are finished or luckily until the ceremony.”
Lord Koga sat up. “Oh, no, no. I couldn’t ask you to do such a thing! After all you and your clan is going through. You seem to have enough on your plate already.” He waved his hands in a defensive manner. “Besides, would you be able to leave your clan that long?”
Lord Akuto seemed insulted. “Oh, come now. All I’m doing is giving orders and waiting for something to happen. Hardly anything goes on here. At least with the ceremony, I’ll feel like I’m doing something useful and I would like to see Ookami again and spend some time with Vegeta and his family after so many long years. Besides, I usually leave for a month at a time whenever I go to visit other clans on business. I tell you, makes me wish I had someone else here to take over while I was gone.” A fake look appeared in the Lord’s eyes.
Lord Koga thought about it a moment longer before answering. “Well, if you insist. I don’t see the harm in you coming along and staying for awhile. You are free to stay at my manor if you want.”
“That would be perfect. I can’t thank you enough my friend.” Lord Akuto smiled in thanks and patted his friend on the shoulder.
Lord Koga waved it off. “Not a problem. Anything for a friend.” A certain understanding came between them as they decided to begin their plans for the ceremony.

Ugh, it’s getting cheesy. >< No wonder I don’t have very many hits, hehe. Or it could be that it’s too confusing or too slow. :/ Eh, oh well. I got reviews anyway. ^^ Alrighty then, so…this will be my last chapter for a while. Don’t worry though, I’m still gonna work on the story, I just won’t update as much. v.v I have three tests this week and homework on the side and not to mention finals are coming up so…I’m gonna be swamped. >< Yeah, I’m still in college. >.> However, I think this’ll be my last year…for now. I need money hehe. So, over the summer I’m going to be getting a job and another apartment. So…I may not have any time then either, who knows. :/ Well, hopefully I’ll have some time to work on this in the meantime. *sighs*
