Chapter Fifteen
"And you're sure you heard them correctly?" The man gently rolled his wine in his glass. "Why should I believe you?"
The servant boy was knelt in front of him, bowing his head. "I heard King Vegeta when he spoke with the Earthling. She is definitely carrying Kakarot's child. The king must be keeping this quiet. It wouldn't look good for everyone to know that Kakarot produced an illegitimate cub."
"And, please tell me, boy, why are you relaying me this information? What do you have to gain?"
The boy swallowed hard. "I don't know."
He stopped twirling his glass and stared at the boy. "You don't know? Are you really that stupid to come to a superior with information that you can't prove, and expect him to believe that you have no ulterior motive?"
The boy's eyes widened. "No, sir, that isn't it."
"What, do you want the king to yourself? You would never earn his respect."
"That is fine with me. I believe that Kakarot is hiding something. I want to be sure my people don't get burned because of a mating that may be a farce."
Watching the servant, he chuckled. "You've done well. Now, leave so I may investigate."
The boy bowed his head again. "Thank you, Lord Zarbon." He quickly rose and left the room.
Zarbon walked to the window, watching outside. Now, he had just the ammunition he was looking for.
----
As Vegeta walked through the castle, Bulma was growing anxious.
"Something isn't right about all of this, Vegeta. What does Zarbon have to gain by requesting a meeting like this?" Bulma asked, unconsciously rubbing her swollen belly.
"How the hell am I supposed to know, woman?" Vegeta snapped. They continued to head toward the training grounds to get Kakarot before heading to the throne room to meet Zarbon.
"Could it have to do with that servant from the night of your coronation? He seemed really shaken up." Bulma pointed out. Vegeta's coronation had passed four weeks ago, so she knew it was a long shot for it to have anything to do with that.
"Possibly. If he went to Zarbon with some kind of information, it may have caused Zarbon to think he has some kind of advantage over me. He may still be trying to get to Kakarot." Vegeta said, keeping his voice low. "That snake doesn't know when to quit."
"He couldn't have Kakarot even if he wanted to. You're mates. That's a bond he can't even begin to understand, let alone sever." Bulma said.
"I'm very aware of that. Kakarot is not going anywhere. However, we can't guarantee what Zarbon is plotting, no matter what he tells us. He's a phenomenal strategist."
"I'm sure everything will be fine."
Vegeta couldn't calm his mind. He knew that Zarbon was up to something, and he would make a point to get to the bottom of it.
Arriving in the training hall, Vegeta saw two nearly identical super Saiyans engaged in an intense spar. Both men looked tired, but neither of them looked to be anywhere close to finished.
Kakarot moved quickly, but Bardock kept up with a little effort. He dodged his son's continuous attacks, and still managed to land a few attacks of his own. It was a fascinating dance, especially with two beings of such enormous power. However, it had to come to an end for the day.
"Kakarot!" Vegeta spoke loudly, just enough to grab his mate's attention.
Both men froze and Kakarot looked to his king. "Hey, Vegeta!"
"Your spar is over, we have an appointment." Vegeta explained, holding out the clothing he expected Kakarot to change into.
Kakarot looked confused, but took the clothing and powered down. Bardock put a hand on his shoulder, letting him know that they would continue their battle later.
"What is this about?" Kakarot asked as his father left.
"Zarbon has asked for a meeting with the three of us. I think it would be wise to hear what he has to say."
Kakarot clenched his jaw. "He's still here?"
"Yes, he hasn't left since the coronation, so I assume what he has to talk to us about is important."
Kakarot nodded and left to shower and change.
"Do you think he's nervous?" Bulma asked from the bench she was sitting on.
"Of course he is. I can feel it. He has the same suspicions as I do. Zarbon is going to start trouble."
The three of them made it to the throne room and Vegeta took his seat while Kakarot stood behind him protectively. Bulma sat in a chair beside Vegeta, so Kakarot was protecting her as well. She had a bad feeling about all of this.
Zarbon came into the room followed by several royal guards, including Bardock. Vegeta refused to take any chances.
"Is all of the security really necessary?" Zarbon asked, smirking that the king.
"I always supply several guards when there is a private meeting." Vegeta explained. "Now, get on with it."
Zarbon looked at Bulma, who had her arms crossed over her belly protectively. "I was very interested when I heard of your pregnancy, Miss Briefs."
Bulma glared at him. "Listen here-"
"Don't say anything." Vegeta said, keeping a close eye on the alien. "The Earthling's pregnancy is none of your concern."
"Are you sure? I think your people would be very upset to hear that the prince is having a cub with the her." Zarbon hissed.
Vegeta ground his teeth together. "You know nothing of our personal affairs. I can't believe you called us here to speak of a child."
"Oh, that's not all, Vegeta." Zarbon chuckled. "You see, if Kakarot is having an illegitimate child with the Earth woman, that does not make it your child. That voids your bond to him."
"I've already said that you know nothing of our personal affairs."
"Well, it becomes my business when it appears to me that this bond is a farce. You wanted to be king, so you had your concubine knock up the Earth woman so you could produce an heir that wasn't truly your own. You got the crown very early because of this promise to produce an heir with your mate, even though the child is nothing but a mutt, and nothing of royalty."
Bardock looked to his son and saw Kakarot's tail lashing back and forth angrily. He knew that Vegeta hadn't disclosed to any of his followers about Bulma's pregnancy, or that she was a surrogate. He believed it was best in order to keep her safe with her mate back on Earth. They intended to keep the identity of the surrogate quiet for as long as possible.
"What are you getting at?" Vegeta asked, refusing to correct Zarbon.
"I just felt that the public should know of the scandal before someone gets hurt."
"There's no scandal to speak of. What makes you think that you can try to tell me what happens on my planet when you aren't even a Saiyan?"
"I've spent the last four weeks researching your laws on the subject. You're clearly unfit for the crown and this fraud could easily take that from you. If that were to happen, both Bulma and Kakarot would be executed for treason."
Vegeta chuckled to himself. "Zarbon, your people have been valued allies of the Saiyans for many years. I'm not sure what makes you believe that I would deceive my own people, but you're incorrect."
Zarbon glared at the king. "How can you prove that the child was not fathered by your mate? I have several witnesses saying that you've said yourself that she was carrying your mate's child and we have security footage of Kakarot entering Bulma's room a number of weeks ago."
"I can't, because it was." Vegeta crossed his arms over his chest. "All you need to know is that there is no fraud being committed. I've produced an heir, regardless of the process involved. Bulma has no relation to the child that she is carrying. I will not give you anymore information on the subject, as you've proven to have every intention of defaming the crown."
"No relation? So you fertilized the woman with another woman's egg?"
"As I said, you will receive no more information on the subject of Bulma's pregnancy. Now, I do believe you have overstayed your welcome. I'd appreciate if you would pack your things and return to your home." Vegeta said, nodding to Bardock.
Bardock stepped in front of the reptile. "You heard the king. I'll lead you back to your room and organize a pod for your departure."
Zarbon's lip curled in annoyance. "Then I suppose you'll be telling the Saiyan people of this issue. Hiding such information from your followers is low, even for you, Vegeta."
"There is nothing to hide from them. They all trust me. You've got nothing of value for them." Vegeta said. "Take him away, Bardock."
Bardock nodded and led Zarbon out of the throne room.
"What the fuck was that about?" Kakarot asked, anger radiating from him.
"Zarbon is looking for a reason to dethrone me and devalue our bond so he can have you. He doesn't like when he doesn't get what he wants." Vegeta explained, standing.
Bulma was a bit pale and obviously skittish. The pregnancy was messing with her hormones and she couldn't keep her emotions straight, so her fear wasn't nearly as hidden away as it normally was.
Vegeta took a moment to kneel in front of Bulma. "I'll make sure you're heavily guarded at all times. I know he's up to something, and he didn't tell us the whole story."
Bulma swallowed and looked at Vegeta. "What if he tries to hurt the cub?"
"That won't happen." Kakarot barked.
"Kakarot, you must calm down. She's already stressed as it is." Vegeta scolded.
"How am I supposed to keep myself calm when this guy has been popping in and out of all of our lives since I came back to Planet Vegeta? How am I supposed to not worry about the wellbeing of the only family I have left?" Kakarot was almost shouting and power was escaping his body freely, causing his messy hair to blow about. He was struggling to keep his anger at bay.
"If you transform in here, I'll drag you back to our chambers by your tail, do you understand me?" Vegeta said, standing so their chests were nearly touching. "He knows how to get under your skin. That son of a bitch will do whatever he has to in order to work you up."
"Don't fight, you two!" Bulma shouted, standing and holding her stomach. She leaning on the chair to help support her weight.
Both men looked at her, visibly concerned. Neither of them had ever known Bulma to show discomfort, but she was pale and her face was distorted in obvious pain.
"Bulma, are you okay?" Kakarot asked, grabbing a hold of her elbow to help support her.
"I think so, I'm just really tired."
"Woman, don't lie to him." Vegeta said.
"It's just a cramp, I've been getting them a lot. Bardock said it's just from the baby growing extremely fast compared to a human fetus, but it makes me pretty weak." She allowed Kakarot to support her weight and help her sit down.
"This amount of stress can't be helping." Kakarot said softly, allowing his ki to flow into Bulma from his hands.
"That helped a lot, Kakarot, thank you." Bulma said, relaxing a bit under the watchful eye of both men.
"Perhaps we should take you to Bardock to make sure something isn't wrong." Vegeta said.
"I don't need to go to Bardock, Vegeta." Bulma snapped.
Vegeta rolled his eyes and looked to his mate, who immediately knew what to do. Kakarot moved so quickly that Bulma couldn't physically respond. He lifted the woman to his chest and began carrying her toward the laboratory.
"Put me down, you big oaf!" Bulma shouted, struggling halfheartedly.
"It's for your own good, Bulma." Kakarot said coolly.
Arriving in the lab, Vegeta contacted Bardock through his scouter to request he come down.
Bardock made it in record time and only then did Kakarot put Bulma down. She was still a bit wobbly on her feet, but stood by her own strength.
"See, Kakarot! I'm perfectly fine!" Bulma shouted, glaring at the tall warrior.
"Enough!" Bardock shouted, quieting the room of the audible tension. "Vegeta and Kakarot were right to bring you here. Just from the way your ki feels, I'd say that the cub is taking far more than his fair share of your energy. I should have expected this when the carrier is human instead of Saiyan, as we are more durable. We have ample energy to spare for a developing cub, but humans don't. Even carrying a human child takes a large toll on your body, and this cub is already using all of your energy and he hasn't even reached the middle of gestation yet."
Vegeta listened carefully, watching as the woman swayed slightly as she too listened.
"Well, what do you propose we should do about it?" Bulma asked, crossing her arms in an attempt to give the older Saiyan a piece of her fiery attitude. She definitely tried, but she didn't look the least bit threatening in her current state.
"We'll have to put you on bed rest until I find a better solution, and I'd prefer if you stayed in the medical wing for observation in the meantime."
Bulma rolled her eyes dramatically. "I can handle this myself, you know? Sleep is a wonderful medicine, but I'd prefer to do it in my own room."
Vegeta growled. "These hormones are seriously getting on my nerves."
Bulma snapped to look at him. "Well, I'm sorry I'm tired from carrying YOUR BABY ALL THE DAMN TIME." Her voice rose to a level Kakarot hadn't heard before, but Vegeta seemed to be accustomed to the fight. Kakarot's eyes darted between the two, trying to figure out how to calm them down.
"Oh, cry me a fucking river, woman. You volunteered, in case your memory fails you, and I've been working my ass off to make sure you don't get yourself killed!" Vegeta snapped back, taking a step toward her.
"Like I asked to be targeted by a snake. You've got a lot of nerve you fucking son of a bit-" Bulma's voice trailed off as she slowly started to collapse. Vegeta immediately ran over to catch her before she hit the ground. She was passed out cold.
"What the hell, Vegeta! You told me not to stress her out." Kakarot said, kneeling to look at Bulma. She still retained the color in her cheeks, but it was obvious how tired she was.
"Shut up, it proved our point to her and she can't argue when she's unconscious, can she?" Vegeta said, giving Kakarot a sly smile and lifting the human into one of the hospital beds occupying the room.
"You wanted her to pass out?"
"I wanted her to stop denying what was right in front of her."
Kakarot stared at his mate. He didn't think Vegeta could have possibly thought that far ahead during a heated argument.
"I've known Bulma for a long time. She doesn't give up until fighting is no longer an option. I chose the lesser of two evils." The king pulled the blankets up around Bulma's shoulders. "Besides, she needs the rest."
Kakarot smiled softly. Truly, his mate still impressed him every day.
Bardock quickly busied himself with checking the human's vital signs, as well as the strong heartbeat of the cub. "Everything looks fine, but I'd like to keep her in the medical wing for a while, as I'd said before."
"Do whatever you have to." Vegeta said, watching as Bardock instructed Kakarot to help with moving the woman. Kakarot picked her up, much like he did before, but he was much more careful with her this time and kept the blanket wrapped around her.
After Bulma was settled in the medical wing, Vegeta turned to leave. "Stay here with the woman for a minute, Kakarot. I am going to go warn our guards about the possibility of Zarbon attacking us."
Kakarot nodded, sitting in the chair beside Bulma's bed. Kakarot took a moment to really admire this woman. She was doing something absolutely amazing, even knowing the risks. She was so selfless and so enthusiastic about helping others.
He couldn't help but feel very unsettled by all of this. If Zarbon came back, they may be in a lot of trouble.
