Vegeta walked into the converted throne room later that night. As with the night before, he’d rather not be here, but he’d knew he had to at least make an appearance. He was also ticked because Lyri hadn’t returned to his quarters. He had looked for her ki and saw that she was with Bulma in her old room, so he wasn't too worried. He made his way to Nix.
“If we are to pull this off, we need the woman,” he muttered to him.
No sooner than the words left Vegeta’s lips did Lyri and Bulma enter that room. Bulma looked appropriate in a long red halter dress. Lyri, on the other hand, wore a sheer black long sleeved bodice with a black mini skirt that barely covered her ass. The skirt had a sheer black fabric that cascaded down over the under skirt. She had finished the look with black heels.
“This should be interesting,” Nix muttered to himself.
“What?” Vegeta asked. Nix cocked his head towards that women and Vegeta turned to look. He inhaled angrily and left Nix, making his way over to the women.
“What in the seven hells are you wearing?” he asked.
“Clothes,” Lyri replied.
“I told you not to draw attention to yourself tonight,” he hissed at Lyri.
“No, you said not to end up alone with Frieza,” she said, “And I haven’t. I’ve been with Bulma.”
Vegeta stopped short when he realized she was right. “Are you going to tell Lyri she looks nice?” Bulma asked. Vegeta glared at Bulma. He didn’t care about clothes or how they looked on anyone...and yet he couldn’t stop looking at the Saiyan woman. His pride getting the best of him, refused to tell Lyri that she looked nice. Better than nice. Exquisite would have been better...but he said nothing about her looks.
“Come on,” he said, placing his hand on the small of her back and guiding her away. His fingers grazed the base of her tail and he felt her shiver next him. He smirked to himself. That he could elicit such a response from such a small simple gesture...he’d have to remember that. He guided them to the head table. He pulled out a seat of Lyri and sat next to her.
“We shouldn’t greet everyone?” Lyri asked.
“I don’t give a shit about formalities,” Vegeta said, “I’d rather not be here anyways.”
“Then let’s leave,” Lyri said. He looked at her like she was stupid. “You’ve made your appearance, so let’s just go.”
Vegeta considered it, but before he could say he agreed, the click clacking of footsteps behind him made him stop. His face changed into a more hardened look and he stood. “Lord Frieza.”
Lyri quickly stood and bowed her head to the tiny lord. “My lord,” she said.
“Prince Vegeta,” Frieza said in a sickly sweet voice, “Nice to see you here this evening. These celebrations are for you, after all. You’re not going to run off again, are you?”
“No, Lord Frieza,” Vegeta said.
Frieza’s red eyes turned to Lyri. “Hello, dear. I don’t mean to be rude, but you were not here at last night’s celebrations and I was informed that you had run off with someone else.”
“You were misinformed,” Lyri said.
“Was I now?” Frieza asked.
“Yes, my lord,” she said, “I would never run off with someone else. I care far to much about Prince Vegeta to do that.”
“I see...” Frieza said. Lyri couldn’t read the tiny lords face. “Come dear, we should talk and get to know one another. Especially if you are to be Vegeta’s mate.” He held his hand out for her.
Before taking Frieza’s hand, Lyri pulled Vegeta close, kissing his cheek before whispering to him, “If I do not come back in ten minutes, come and find me.” She placed her hand in Frieza’s and left with him.
Vegeta vibrated with anger. How dare she just disregard what he told her this morning. There wasn’t much he could do now, though, so he’d have to deal with her later.
Frieza placed Lyri’s hand on his arm, keeping it covered with his hand. “So, my dear,” he said as they walked around the banquet, “You and Vegeta are happy?”
“Very, my lord,” Lyri told him.
“I’ve never known Vegeta to be happy,” Frieza said accusingly, as if her didn’t believe her.
“You just don’t know him like I do, my lord,” Lyri told him.
Frieza glared daggers at her. His nails dug into her hand. “Are you insinuating that don’t know anything about him? I know more than you think, girl.” Lyri said nothing, trying not to let on that she was petrified. Frieza inhaled and patted Lyri’s now bleeding hand. “I did not invite you to talk to argue. I have proposition for you.”
“A proposition?” Lyri asked.
“Yes,” Frieza said, “You see, he refuses to believe it, but Vegeta belongs to me. And only to me. So, what I’m proposing is you convince him that he is not a good fit here on your planet and that he’d be far better suited permanently stationed with me on my ship. In return, I’m willing to let you live. Here on your planet, of course. Can’t have you bothering Vegeta on my ship, now can we?” Lyri was speechless. “Think about it, my dear, but it is either that, or...” Frieza smiled a syrupy fake smile. “Well, let’s not get into the nasty details. I expect an answer before I leave.” Lyri watched him walk away, her head buzzing. She felt light headed and sick. An arm snaked around hers and she was dragged outside the throne room.
“Kakarot, what the hell?” she snapped.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Kakarot asked angrily.
“What?” Lyri asked. Kakarot stared at her with more anger in his eyes than she had ever remembered seeing. “What has gotten into you?”
“You know exactly what,” Kakarot said.
“I don’t,” Lyri told him.
“You make this big speech last night about how our people need the prince now more than ever and promise to help in whatever way you can. Come to find out that you’re just like everyone else...only looking out for yourself without giving a damn about anyone else.” SMACK! The sound of Lyri’s hand hitting Kakarot‘s face echoed through the hall.
The door opened behind them and Nix walked out. “What’s going on?”
“Oh nothing...except I’m going to kill him!” Lyri growled.
“Have fun, but first, care to explain why?” Nix asked.
“He basically called me a whore!” Lyri yelled.
“I did not!” Kakarot yelled back, “But if the shoe fits...” Lyri kicked him hard in the groin and then punched him square in the nose. He dropped to the floor, clutching himself. Lyri reared her foot back and kicked him in the face with all her might.
“Now that you feel better...” Nix said, “Want to explain why he called you a whore.”
“Because he’s a fucking moron,” Lyri said.
“Yes, we all know that,” Nix said.
“She’s conniving with Frieza,” Kakarot said through gritted teeth.
“Really? Hmm?” Nix said.
“Nix, I swear...” Lyri growled. He waved her off.
“Hey, Kakarot,” Nix asked, “Was there anyone else with her?”
“No,” Kakarot told him.
“No?” Nix asked, “Hmm...interesting. So, Lyri was alone with one of, if not the most dangerous person in the universe?” Kakarot nodded. “Hmm...and she was, maybe cordial with him?” Kakarot nodded. “And, this is just a guess, Frieza said or did something and because Lyri didn’t react negatively, you assumed that she agreed with Frieza?”
“Huh?” Kakarot asked.
Nix rolled his eyes. “Nevermind. You’ll never understand.” He turned to Lyri. “Are you ok?”
Lyri nodded. “Yeah...no...” She sighed and told Nix everything that happened with Frieza. “Obviously, I’m not going to do anything that monster wants...so, tonight is my last night alive...and I’m out here beating Kakarot’s ass...” There was silence between the three Saiyans. “I’m going to go find Vegeta,” Lyri said, her voice quieter than it had been before, “Tell him everything and...” She trailed off. She didn’t want to say that she was saying her goodbyes, but she was, wasn’t she? She looked at the two men, wanting to say more but not knowing what to say. They all reentered the throne room. She walked up to the head table, Nix following her, where Vegeta was sitting. He didn’t acknowledge her as she walked up to him. She knew he was mad, but she’d deal with it later...if she was alive later to deal with it. She knelt down so only he could hear her and whispered, “We need to talk.”
“I have nothing to say to you at the moment,” Vegeta told her.
“Vegeta, don’t be like this,” Lyri begged. Vegeta glared at her but refused to say anything more. Lyri stared at him, silently begging him to please hear her out but he turned away from her. Lyri stood and walked away, as she did she heard Nix snap quietly at Vegeta.
“Do you really thinnk she had any other option?” Nix snapped. He was about to go after Lyri, but stopped and turned to Vegeta saying, “From what I have seen, she has done everything you’ve asked of her and more. There’s only so much a person can take before they either give up or are irreparably broken.” With that being said, Nix turned and walked out. He followed Lyri’s power level and found her outside, leaning against the palace.
“You know, you don’t have to follow me,” Lyri told him.
“And let you get in trouble?” Nix asked.
“What’s the worse that can happen? I’m dead anyway...” she told him.
“We’re all going to die at some point,” Nix replied.
“You know, part of me is scared shitless but another part of me doesn’t care,” Lyri admitted. The two turned to Kakarot, who walked over to the sheepishly.
“I’ll let you two talk,” Nix said and left them alone.
The two adopted siblings stood next to each other in silence for a few minutes. Kakarot sighed before saying, “I didn’t realize...” Lyri glared at him, saying nothing and watching him squirm. “I’m an idiot, I didn’t think, and I apologize.”
“I should kill you for thinking I would ever do what that bastard wants,” Lyri said, “But, I won’t. Because even though you’re an idiot, I can kind of understand where you were coming from. Anyone else would have out right agreed to whatever Frieza wanted. But I’m not everyone else, Kakarot. I thought you knew that...” Both stood there in silence, letting the cold night air settle around them.
“We should probably get you to Vegeta’s quarters,” Kakarot muttered.
“I don’t think either of us want to see each other at the moment,” Lyri told him.
“Why?” he asked.
“He’s pissed because I went against what he told me and is refusing to talk to me,” she said, “And...I just don’t want him to see how much this has affected me right now...”
“You’re gonna have to face him sooner or later,” Kakarot told her.
“Maybe I don’t want to face him,” Lyri told him, “Maybe I don’t want him to see how fucking scared I am. I don’t to hear him yell at me, knowing that I’m going be dead tomorrow morning...”
“You are not dying tomorrow,” Kakarot told her. She didn’t look convinced. He sighed and, after a few minutes, convinced her to go back to Vegeta’s quarters. Lyri opened the door and stared at Vegeta and Nix. She tried to turn around to leave but Kakarot forced her inside. Vegeta looked at her with such anger in his eyes, that she ended up feeling worse than when she first walked in. Vegeta turned back to Nix.
“Care to explain why we’re all here?” he asked.
“He doesn’t need to explain anything because there’s nothing to discuss,” Lyri said, glaring at Nix.
“I wasn’t speaking to you,” Vegeta snapped.
Lyri’s hands curled into fists at her side. “Fine, you jackass. You want to know why we’re all here? Because they think they can figure a way around Frieza not killing me tomorrow. But they’re wrong. There’s no way around it...” She walked over to the balcony doors, threw them open and walked out onto the balcony.
“Frieza told her to convince you to permanently join his army or he’d kill her,” Nix said.
Vegeta looked over at the open balcony. He walked over to the balcony and closed the doors behind him, giving him and Lyri a bit of privacy. “This is why I said to stay away from Frieza.”
“And what should I have done, Vegeta?” Lyri asked, “We both know I had no choice.” Vegeta knew she was right. “You’re not joining Frieza’s army. I won’t allow it.”
“Of coarse I’m not,” Vegeta told her. Lyri was quiet, thinking that he was agreeing that she should refuse Frieza’s offer and put her life on the line. He glanced at her. He wanted to tell her that he couldn’t and would never want her to sacrifice herself for him...but he couldn’t. “We continue as we were. I go back with him until you and the other idiots find what we need.”
“Vegeta...” Lyri started, before Vegeta grabbed her arms and forced her to look at him.
“I will go back and you will stay here as planned. If you so much as think about sneaking away to refuse him...” he trailed off, but quickly added, “Don’t waste your time sacrificing yourself for me.” He went to open the door but stopped short when she whispered.
“I’d do anything for you,” she whispered, “Even if that meant dying.”
Vegeta froze. No one he knew would die for anyone else...and here she was openly saying she would give her life for him. Wait...that was her job. She was Kiki’s protector at one point, so she was used to that. Yeah, that was it. She had gotten so used to doing it with his sister, she was subconsciously doing it with him. That had to be it. “I can handle myself,” Vegeta told her.
“Doesn’t matter. I’d still lay down my life for you,” Lyri told him.
Vegeta’s grip on the door handles tightened. He didn’t like hearing that she’d throw her life away for him. If it were anyone else saying this he wouldn’t care...but her? ‘What has she done to me?’ he thought to himself. “Don’t be an idiot,” he muttered and opened the doors. He was barely able to move out of the way as Bulma ran past him. Lyri could hear her Earthling friend talking to her but she couldn’t concentrate on what she was saying, her gaze was glued to Vegeta. He had moved inside and was speaking quietly to both Nix and Kakarot.
“Hey,” Bulma said. Lyri forced herself to tear her attention away from Vegeta. “Are you ok?”
Lyri’s gaze flicked briefly back to Vegeta before returning to Bulma. “Yeah.”
“Lyri,” Bulma said quietly, “I may not know you very well, but I believe I know you well enough to know what you are thinking and you can’t do it.” Lyri looked at her. “Kakarot and Nix filled me in.”
“Bulma...” Lyri started before Bulma cut her off.
“Shut up, I’m talking right now. You will not give yourself over to that tiny purple freak! Do you understand me? So help me, Lyri, if you even try, I can guarantee you that my wrath will be much worse than anything you’ve ever faced.”
“Oh, we’re all so scared. You’re gonna release your blue fiery wrath,” Nix joked. Bulma turned towards him, her cerulean eyes narrowing with an intense fire in them. She walked over to him and placed her hands on her hips.
“Listen here, Nix,” Bulma said, “Now is not the time for your sarcastic comments. Our friend is in trouble. Now what are we going to do about it?”
“I like that feisty spirit of yours. It’s very alluring,” Nix said. Bulma’s face turned a bright shade of pink.
“A...anyway,” she stuttered.
“As I said before,” Lyri said coming back inside, “There is nothing to discuss. I’ve made up my mind.”
“And I’ve already told you, you insufferable woman, that you are not doing that!” Vegeta snapped.
“It’s my choice, isn’t it? My life. So what if I want to give it all away?” She took a breath, trying to regain control over her emotions. “Never mind. Just forget it.” She walked past all four of them and into the bedroom, closing the door behind her.
“We should go...” Bulma said to Nix and Kakarot. Kakarot nodded and followed Bulma as she started leaving. Nix exchanged a look with Vegeta and followed the other two. Vegeta walked over to the bedroom doors and opened them. He didn’t see Lyri but sensed her in the closet. He waited a minute and she emerged. She stopped when she saw him.
“I don’t want to argue with you, Vegeta,” Lyri told him. She walked past him, trying to get to her side of the bed, but he grabbed her.
“Then why are your insisting on acting like an idiot?” Vegeta asked.
“I’m not acting like an idiot!” Lyri told him, trying to pull away.
“Yes, you are!” Vegeta retorted.
Pulling herself free, Lyri exclaimed, “Is it idiocy when I’m doing everything in my power to help and protect the person I love?”
