The sky hadn't cleared up that morning. It remained dark and gray with heavy clouds, ready for rain. This was all Ozuma needed.
The tiny green car sped along the road from the hospital back toward town. Mrs. Tate stopped off at a local fast food restaurant and picked something up for the boy to eat since he hadn't had anything yet. And food always makes you feel better.
"I know my Max would love to have you over," she was saying as they are now back on their way to the Tate home. "He was very disappointed that you didn't come to the sleep over last night, was anything wrong?"
"No." It was a simple and quick response.
He'd dreaded going to Max's house. He didn't want to be around someone that was just going to monitor him for jokes later on. If only there were some way he could be taken somewhere else.
"My son likes you quite a lot, Ozuma." Mrs. Tate looked into the rear view mirror at the boy's sullen reflection. "He tells me you're some what of an empath... Or is it that you can see ghost?"
Ozuma rolled his eyes. I knew it would roll around to that... Why do I have to be 'Ozuma, the boy who sees things'? He frowns a bit. I'm not crazy... "No... I don't see things or ghost. I-..I'm afraid of the-.." He bit back the words he now wanted to say, changing them to something else. "I'm afraid of the dark, a little bit, that's all."
"Hmm." Was her only response.
Ozuma had never seen a blonde before- except for Max, but he had thought the boy dyed his hair or something. His mother looked very natural and he could tell that Max got the most of his features from her, judging by her large blue eyes and pale skin.
Ozuma's gaze falls out the window up at the dark clouds in the sky. This is just like the first day we came here... Next thing you know the couple will be on the road again. He had to smile at that, the idea of them haunting whomever made eye contact with them. Then his troubles would be over. But, no. He lives in their old home- worse than that- they moved in there only two years after the Iwakawa's had died. There was no winning. Maybe they're only there until they find the spirit of their daughter. The police never found her body. And like Rei had said, there is a chance that she died along with her family that night when they drowned in the lake.
It may have been a dream, but what happened within it felt so real to the extent of feeling their every emotion, not to mention their pain. Who is to say that the wife was the one that attacked him under water and Dawn hadn't just thrown herself in as well.
A patch of black and gray came into view between the trees. Craning his neck, Ozuma smirked seeing his friend Rei, and Kai, walking toward his house. "Mrs. Tate, can you drop me off at home, please? I really don't wanna... I mean," he didn't know, he was at a loss for words.
"Alright, if you don't mind being alone."
"Not at all!" He didn't mean to say it that quickly, but he really and truly did not want to go to Max's house- even though- Max does seem harmless at times. Now was just not the time to try mending a broken friendship. Glancing out the window again, he saw the two teens walking steadily through the woods. If they are going to the lake, he just needed a quick trip through the woods to get there. And then he would ask Rei... Wait, what was he going to say?
The car turned in at the path that leads through the woods to his house. He lost sight of the two boys but he didn't worry about it, he knew where they'd be. Once the car made it to his house; Mrs. Tate rolled it up to the carport and waited for the boy to exit.
"Thank you for the ride. I might come by later to hang out with Max." He closes the door. "And... tell him I'm sorry for not coming to his sleep over."
"I will." Backing out of the driveway, she waved a hand.
Ozuma watched as the car moves out of sight, then he looks angrily at his home. He didn't want to be in there, not alone anyway.
"Ozuma." It was Rei.
The mixed boy smiled at the sound of the other male's voice. "Hi Rei. Kai."
The other teen nodded a greeting then said, "Hey."
They became silent. Ozuma looked around aimlessly; Kai stared at the mixed boy, and Rei looked at the house. Finally, Ozuma decided to speak first.
"So, what are you guys doing here?" They turned their attention to him. "It's a little early isn't it?"
"Max heard his mother on the phone with yours, he called Rei when she left and told him to meet you at your house." Kai explained, surprisingly.
He didn't strike Ozuma as a talker but he seemed willing to be at the time. I'll have to thank Max later. He notes thoughtfully. "That's good, I really wanted to talk to you Rei."
The Chinese boy looked surprised. "Talk? About what?"
"Do you guys wanna come in?" He took the key from his pocket, sticking it into the door knob.
"Sure." Kai piped up.
Embarrassed, the Balaji child grabs the door knob. "Um... We're gonna have to.. hurry, when we go in. I... don't want too much light getting in." He swallowed his embarrassment back.
Kai cocks an eyebrow, but does as the boy says when entering the house. The door was cracked only wide enough for each of them to slip through and nothing more. They slipped in easily through the small crack, closing it instantly after they all made it inside the hall.
"What happened to the lights?" Asks Kai right away noticing the darkness. His eyes dart this way and that.
Rei seemed unnerved. He was fine in the house before when he came over, that was nothing though because lights were on, curtains open, but now... Now it resembled what it once was. A dark prison, that drove people out of their minds.
"Uu-uuhh," began the Chinese boy.
"Do you guys want something to eat? I can make breakfast for you?" Ozuma walks down the hall. The two guest following him. He didn't know how to answer Kai's question without sounding insane, so he ignored it.
"I'm not hungry." Replied the Russian boy, his eyes still searching around in the darkness waiting for them to adjust.
"...Me either." Rei fidgets from foot to foot.
Ozuma knew he was losing them, so he tried to pick up a spare. "Do you guys wanna watch some tv? I think that's okay." He went to search for the remote. His eyes were already getting used to dropping back into stark darkness from being inside for so long.
The guest sat down on the couch, and watched the mixed child search for the remote. Kai frowned slightly, then rolled his eyes. "Maybe if you turned on a light."
"No, I'm sure I know where I left it,"
Kai glances at Rei, the look unseen by the addressed, and chuckles. This kid was hilarious. Putting his hand down beside him, Kai felt the smooth plastic item under his hand. "Is this what you're looking for?" He rocked it back and forth in the air.
"Yeah, thanks." Taking the remote, he sat down on the couch as well. Turning on the tv, Ozuma skimmed each channel for something that looked like it would remain fairly dark. A monster movie, perfect. Putting the remote down, he relaxed a bit.
Ozuma and Kai watched the movie, but Rei kept his eyes on the kitchen entrance. He almost looked as though he were waiting for someone to come from there. Elbowing the Balaji boy on his upper arm, he nods his head at him. "How have you been, lately?" His eyes finished his sentence. He knew Ozuma wouldn't want to be embarrassed by all this. Not that he wasn't already.
"I'm so, so." He answered truthfully.
"Good..." They were all silent again. Rei cleared his throat. "You wanted to talk to me about something?"
Kai's ears pricked up now. He knew that Rei and Ozuma had spoken one night, but he didn't know what about. It seemed strange that they might have been talking about this Iwakawa family the whole time. He barely knew anything about them, except for what was on the news. Something about them drowning.
"I wanted to ask you about Dawn. What was she like?" He was very direct, like the first night.
"What about her?" He's now looking at the tv.
Ozuma shrugged. "I don't know," he didn't know where to begin. "What was she like? When was the last time you saw her?" He shrugs again.
"The last time I saw her? Why do you ask?" Rei repeats, confused.
"I'm just curious."
Rei thought for a minute. "Well... the last time was... about two years ago I guess, a month or two before the accident."
The younger boy nods as he listens to his friend speaking.
"It's funny, about her actually.." Rei was saying. "She wasn't shy but, she never really said much either... When we first met she played with me, loudly, like any normal kid. But a year after that she was kinda withdrawn... I don't know why." He shook his head at the memory, his long bangs hiding his eyes more than the darkness of the room. "Then when I met Kai and had been gone for sometime, I eventually came back over to the house one day, and found out that she was locked away in her room. She wouldn't speak to me or anything- she wouldn't even come out of the room. I got uncomfortable, so I left... That was the last time I saw her."
So she had gone crazy like her family. Ozuma bit his bottom lip.
Kai listened with moderate interest, but he had no real clue as to what the two were talking about.
"There was something else I noticed that was different." Standing, he looks down at Ozuma. "Could we go see her room."
"I don't know which one it is."
"That's okay," the dark haired boy walks to the stairs. "I remember which one it is. Come on."
The two on the couch stand then follow the Chinese teen up the stairs. It was just as dark up there as downstairs. Ozuma made sure the place was sealed tightly from the light for when morning came around. They went to the end of the hall, where Ozuma usually stayed clear of, he knew there was a reason he had such bad feelings going down there. Now he knew why. The insane little girl slept there once upon a time.
"It was here." Rei pointed.
Walking around a small corner, he grabs a door knob giving it a twist. The door popped open with ease, and swung back hitting the wall which startled both Rei and Ozuma. Kai snickered at the two of them. He didn't understand why they were so jumpy. And if they were all that scared, someone should have turned a light on.
After the other two had collected their nerves, Rei marched into the bedroom. Kai and Ozuma followed him.
The former friend of the Iwakawa family went right to the far wall; his foot steps softened by the wall to wall carpet laid out on the floor. The room was completely empty, not even a lame piece of dust stuck to anything as far as they could tell. Just a typical room that showed no signs of a crazy little girl that used to reside within it.
"Here. There used to be a window here when I first came to the house." He felt a smooth drywall surface that now covered the used to be window of the room. "It was gone when I came back that last time."
"What kind of sick people seal up a window in their daughter's bedroom?" Kai wondered.
A board creaked in the hallway.
Rei turned his head to the sound. "Ozuma?"
The Balaji boy looked at Rei, then to where the Chinese boy's gaze fell. "Don't worry, the lights are off." He assured him.
Rei didn't care as he hurried over to the door, closing it, then turned the lock over.
"Rei, what are you doing?" Asks Kai going over to his lover, he places a hand on his firm shoulder giving it a quick rub.
The dark haired boy shrugged. "I'm just taking pre-cautions."
"Of what? We're alone." Moving away from Rei, Kai slid his hand up and down the wall searching for a light switch. "This is ridiculous, the two of you are scaring yourselves for nothing."
"Don't turn it on!" The other two practically shout in unison.
Kai withdrew his hand, confused as ever now. Ozuma was at his side before he even knew the kid had moved, he felt a hand grasp tightly around his wrist.
"Kai... this house is..." Ozuma really hated this part. Sure, Rei understands, but Kai is another story. He seems brave and afraid of nothing. Mocking people that had fears were guys like his' hobby.
"Kai if we turn the light on, we might be in danger of Mr. and Mrs. Iwakawa's spirits." Rei explained with ease.
Wish I'd thought of that. He looked at Kai to see his reaction. But surprisingly, he didn't laugh or scoff. Instead he reached for the door knob. "What are you gonna do?"
"What else, I'm going into a room alone and I'm gonna turn on a light." He turns the lock over in the knob, ready to twist the knob to open the door when the hall light comes on. He merely blinks seeing this.
Ozuma shoved Kai aside and relocks the door. "They know we're in here." He turns to the Russian. "We have to be quiet until they leave, okay."
"You're the one who's talking."
"Sssh!" Rei silenced. "I think I hear someone coming."
All three of them drop down to the floor, flat on their stomachs and they try peeking under the crack of it for feet or something out of the ordinary.
Kai couldn't believe this. There was no such thing as ghost or spirits; once people died that was it. They got no second chances, they get no haunting rights. They're just dead. Then another thought came to him.
"Maybe it's your parents." He whispered.
There was a chance it could be his father, but how could Himani get a ticket that fast? Not to mention he had called him just a few minutes ago and he didn't care how fast any plane claimed to be, it couldn't have gotten his father there as fast as this.
Crack!
Rei and Ozuma jumped.
"What was that?" Asks the Chinese boy.
The stoic Russian shrugged. "It sounded like glass shattering, to me."
Rei and Ozuma gave glances at each other remembering that the couple had gone mad, shattering the lights in the house. One to be normal and the other to protect their daughter. In the end, it was they who needed the protecting from her. Their was another sound! Something like a chair- or a desk being flipped over, something wooden. And they were almost positive that another light was turned on.
His wife attacked him, out of the blue... they had an argument and ran through the house turning on lights and breaking them. Ozuma bit his bottom lip as he thought carefully. Mrs. Iwakawa loves her daughter... she told her husband to keep the lights off, but he freaked out... Does Mrs. Iwakawa know that their daughter killed them? Is that why she held the sign? Ozuma's eyes widened. Run from Dawn was a warning, they were trying to help me? Weren't they?
A low creak to their left sent Ozuma running, "Run! Run!" He turned the lock on the door, tugging it open.
He no longer cared about the couple, he was more afraid of Dawn. He prayed Rei and Kai were behind him because he didn't plan on stopping until he was safely outside. His blood was cold, frozen in terror at the sight of the closet door in Dawn's bedroom blowing open without the help of wind from the missing window. Which meant it had to have been done from the inside.
"Ozuma, slow down!" He heard Kai saying.
The three of them rushed through the house as though their butts were on fire, at least Rei and Ozuma did. Kai walked after them more confused than when they first came into the strange home. Looking at the light switch in the hall, Kai missed the woman emerging from the bedroom carrying a hammer over her head.
Her heavy foot steps sped over to the boy with quickness. Kai heard the sound just as his hand flipped the light switch off. He turned around, feeling a cool breeze blow across his face. Blinking several times, a thud caused the boy to be startled and he turned the light back on. Nobody was there.
"Hm?" Reaching down, he picked up a stray hammer that had been left on the floor. What an odd family. Turning the light off; Kai left the house to find where Ozuma and his boyfriend had run off to.
