Part Fifteen- A
“Do you think he is truly the one?” A nasal voice whispered.
Trowa stared thoughtfully at the small form on the bed. Though swathed with bandages and covered in bruises and cuts, he was still beautiful. Finally he answered. “He must be. Remember what was said Heero. ‘Only the one who was human, but walks in shadows, who combines the Light of the Lords and the Shadows of Shinigami, can tame the feral heart and balance the soul of Darkness.’ Look at his wings, beloved.” Trowa nodded toward the boy. “The light of the Lords has to be the white on his wings, and the Shadows of Shinigami, the black. He is Duo’s soul mate.”
“What if he doesn’t recover? What if he doesn’t learn in time?”
“Then Duo will truly become Shinigami.”
Heero snuggled closer to his tall lover. “He’s already close, Trowa. We can’t let that happen. I love Duo too much to lose him to the darkness.”
Trowa looked at Heero and arched his visible brow. “We love him too much Heero. Quatre is the greatest healer that the Shadow Lords have ever known. If anyone can save Wufei then it is he.”
Heero’s cobalt gaze was locked on the wreckage that was Wufei’s body and wings. “I hope you’re right Trowa. I really hope you’re right.”
*****
The small boy on the bed lay still as death. His breathing came shallow and fast, pushing past his dry, split lips. The little blonde watched him closely. Still he almost missed the slight flicker of lashes that signaled Wufei’s struggle to waken.
Ebony lashes lifted, revealing eyes as dark as night. They slowly blinked before focusing on Quatre’s serene features. A pink tongue flicked out to wet chapped lips. Delicately they parted. “Wha-“
Wufei’s normally smooth voice was hoarse and he had to clear his throat before he could continue. “What happened?”
Quatre smiled gently and leaned forward to adjust the boy’s blankets. “Maru forced you into your birthright. I welcome you, brother,” the little blond carefully embraced Wufei, who could do nothing more than remain still.
Surprise flashed across his expression. “B-birthright? Brother? What do you mean?”
Quatre pulled back and settled onto the side of the bed. “You are a Shadow Lord, Wufei, and now Prince Consort to Shinigami.”
Wufei wilted. “Nani?” He gasped weakly.
Quatre tucked the blankets more securely around him. “Recover quickly, Wufei. You must complete your training soon.”
*****
Wufei was hot, sweaty, and generally in a bad mood. He glared blearily at his erstwhile ‘teacher’, and wiped at the sweat dripping from his forehead. *Why am I doing this?*
Quatre pinned his pupil with a hard stare. “You are doing this because you must learn to use your powers. You must also guard your thoughts. Now. Try it again!”
Wufei snarled quietly and clamped a shield firmly down over his mind. He turned back to the piece of rock that he was supposed to be figuring out how to burn. Glowering at the stone he carefully pretended that it was Quatre he was torching. He pushed harder, mentally commanding the rock to burst into flames.
A sharp yelp broke his concentrat He He turned sharply and was greeted with the sight of the smallest blond Shadow Lord with scorched clothing and tendrils of smoke rising from his hair. Aqua eyes glared blearily at him. Quatre’s voice was quiet and carefully calm when he spoke. “Wufei, you have to concentrate on what you’re supposed to be burning. Not on me.”
Wufei gulped, torn between fear and laughter. “I-I’m sorry, Quatre.”
Quatlowelowered. “So you should be chosen. Now concentrate on the damn rock!”
Wufei giggled and did as commanded.
Hours later found Wufei outside the stable. Carefully he checked for onlookers before he eased the outer door open and squeezed through the gap. He paused just inside the door to let his eyes adjust to the darkness. He closely peered into the shadows and, seeing nothing out of the ordinary, then darted toward Nataku’s stall.
The gray mare rested comfortably against a thick bed of straw. Lazily she opened on large eye that fixed onto Wufei. *Come in bonded. Sit with me for a while.*
Wufei happily complied. He settled into the straw and leaned back into Nataku’s warm body. He fidgeted and had to readjust his wings behind him. The dark haired boy sighed irritably. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used hesehese Nataku.”
The Shadow Mare swished her tail. *Of course you will, bonded. It is your birthright after all.*
“Birthright?? How can it be my birthright? I’m human!”
“You are not.” A newce ice interrupted.
Wufei flinched back against Nataku when Zechs seemed to melt from the shadows. His white-gold hair glowed in the soft light of the stable and his seemingly colorless wings glimmered with the sheen of false purity. None of these facts made Wufei feel better about being alone with him.
Nataku nuzzled him gently and Wufei gathered his courage. His voice was quiet when he answered, “I am human. I always was. My mother and father were human. How could I be any different?”
Zechs raked an agitated hand through his hair. “You are partially correct. Your mother was human. You, and your father, are not.”
“I am human! How would you know what my father was or wasn’t?”
Zechs sighed deeply and turned his back to Wufei. “I know, Wufei, because I am your father.”
The dark haired boy’s jaw dropped nearly to the floor. After a moment he snapped it closed with a sharp click of his teeth. “You are not! How could you possibly be my father? You’re not much older than I am!” Dark power swirled around the young boy and reached out toward the man who had caused his agitation.
Nataku clamped down on her bonded’s power. *No, bonded. What he says is true, Zechs is your sire. Listen to what he has to say.*
The tall blond sighed deeply. “You are my son. Nothing will ever change that.”
The boy looked at the man who named himself his father. “B-but how?”
“I was taken from my mate many years ago. They-they gave me something and thrust your mother into the room with meou wou were the result. I knew your mother and she was a great woman, one who would never have allowed her son to be abused as you were. In a way I loved her I suppose. But they took her, and you, from me.” Zechs paused for a moment and brushed tears from his eyes. “When Treize found me, I was nearly dead. It took me many months to recover, since all the healers were here at the castle. When I could tell him what happened, we searched for you, Wufei.”
Wufei’s voice was smald und unsure when he finally spoke. “F-father?” He took a tentative step toward Zechs’s tall form.
Zechs’s sky colored eyes brightened and he opened his arms to his son. Wufei almost ran to him and gratefully allowed himself to be swallowed in the tight embrace of his father. “We never stopped looking for you, Wufei. And we never would have.” The blond Shadow Lord’s voice was choked with emotion and he tightened his embrace.
“And that is why you will be going with Zechs and Treize when they return to their lands.”
Wufei jerked back in his father’s embrace when he heard Duo speak. Zechs refused to let him go and the boy was forced to settle for turning in his father’s arms to regard his Prince in confusion. “But Duo I…”
Those violet orbs never even looked in his direction. “No. You will go back with them.”
