“Aw, come on, you look hot and you know it.”
Wufei's face twinged pink as he gazed at his reflection in the mirror. He had thought Quatre would put them all in one of the outfits they'd worn for the shoot, but the blond had said that was old news and he had to showcase his exclusive models in designs not seen.
Wufei released a breath. “I look like an idiot.”
Duo rested his chin on Wufei's shoulder. “You look like sex on legs. I'd eat you up right now, but there are demands we make an appearance. Join me?”
He raised his chin. “What's my incentive?”
The braided man smirked. Yes, their little bashful Chinese lover was getting bolder by the day. “What sort of incentive would you like?”
“Well, it took kisses just to get photographs, what do you think it might take to get me to conform to your wishes for me to go out into a sea of people dressed like this?”
Duo grinned wickedly and captured Wufei's lips with his own in an impassioned kiss that quickly had the Asian weak in the knees. He allowed himself to be pushed to the wall and surrendered to its support as Duo slid down his body and pulled his awakening length free from the confining pants.
Obsidian eyes slid open and watched as Duo stroked him to full hardness. A groan ripped from him as the brunette's lips parted and a pink tongue slipped out to tease the head of his erection. He jerked, panting softly.
“Don't tease me... we don't have time.”
Duo licked his lips and burning violet met torrid onyx. Wufei watched as full lips wrapped around his tip. His eyes flew wide and then slid shut as his hard length was instantly deep throated. “Oh, shit!”
He tried to hold himself still, but it was difficult with the delightful torture pulling him ever more quickly toward completion. He forced his eyes open to watch his erection slide in and out of the delectable mouth.
“Duo,” he breathed in ecstasy.
Duo hummed around him and Wufei felt his arousal heighten even further. He clenched his hands on Duo's shoulders and let his head fall back to the wall, hips jerking uncontrollably. His breath left him in panting gasps that would leave no one in question as to the pleasure he was feeling if they heard it.
Heat coiled in the pit of his stomach as Duo mouthed him toward completion. The experienced lips and tongue bringing him to an orgasm so intense he saw stars and almost blacked out. He slid down the wall and gave his lover and friend a soft, lopsided smile.
“Okay... I think I'm ready now.”
Duo quirked an eyebrow. “I think I'm not. You go out there lookin' like this and you'll be accosted in the first minute.” He leaned forward and kissed Wufei gently. “Damn, I love you.”
Wufei licked his lips, meeting darkened violet eyes. “We shouldn't have done that without Heero knowing.”
“Why?” a third voice asked from the door. Violet and onyx eyes shot to the Japanese man. He shrugged. “I found it intoxicating, myself. And I must say I'm glad I went looking for you two when I did. I'm not offended,” he assured Wufei.
“It's going to happen, two of us without the third there. I know you gain pleasure from him as well as me. If I can't give it to you for some reason, don't feel guilty about taking it from him. Okay?”
Wufei nodded slowly, wondering at the gift he'd been given.
******
“Excuse me.”
Quatre turned at the tap to his shoulder and his eyes widened. The man smiled a tad nervously and held out his hand. “My name is Brandon Day.”
He gaped. “THE Brandon Day?”
He laughed softly, tossing a long braid back behind his shoulder. “Yeah, I guess. This is my wife, Samantha, and our son Mark.” Quatre could only nod, speechless. “We found your advertisement and...” He paused, looking to his wife.
“We want to meet with Michael. He is one of your models, isn't he?”
He had a difficult time forming words, so he just held up his hand in an obvious 'wait here' gesture. He weaved through the crowd until he found his models and Trowa. Duo's back was to him as he told some elaborate story. Trowa noticed the blond first and pushed from the wall.
“Quatre, what's wrong? You're white as a ghost.”
He shook his head, looking to Duo. “There are... some people who want to meet you.”
Duo frowned. “I take it they're not people I want to meet.”
Quatre chewed his lip. “It's really not that simple.” He pointed across the room.
Duo followed his gaze and scanned the crowd. When his eyes landed on the couple, he felt his world tilt. He fell back a step and Wufei and Heero were instantly beside him.
“It's not possible,” he whispered in a strangled voice.
“Duo, you don't remember what happened,” Wufei said gently.
He swallowed. “Then they did abandon me.”
Heero ran his hand over Duo's back. “If they abandoned you then why would they be looking for you now?”
“Maybe they feel guilty.”
Trowa studied the nervous family across the room. “They don't look guilty. They look relieved and apprehensive.”
Quatre touched Duo's arm. “She was about in tears when she asked if your name was Michael. Does the name mean anything to you?”
He paled slightly while Heero and Wufei shared a glance before looking to him. He leaned heavily into Heero. “I... I need to sit down.”
They helped him to a table in the far corner and he leaned forward, wrapping his arms around himself. “This can't be happening.”
Heero knelt in front of him. “Duo, by all appearances, they're your family. They can answer questions about your past.”
He shook his head. “I don't want to know.”
Sapphire bore into violet. “But you need to.”
He took a shaky breath and peered through his bangs and the family waiting across the room. He gripped Heero's hand on his knee and looked to Wufei. “Stay?”
They both smiled. “Like you could send us away,” Wufei promised.
He turned to Quatre. “All right,” he whispered. “I'll meet with them.”
Duo stared at the older man with violet eyes and chestnut hair folded into a braid, the face so much like his own he could have been staring in a mirror. Flashes of memory came unbidden and he closed his eyes.
'What does the big boy want to do next?'
'I wanna ride the carousel.'
He chuckled, flipping his braid over his shoulder. 'Carousel it is, then.'
“Duo?”
Heero's voice broke through and Duo's eyes flew wide, landing on the couple again. “You're... you're my...” He swallowed and looked to the younger man. “Mark?”
He smiled, his own eyes somewhat moist. “Yeah, Mikey.”
He licked his lips. “It's Duo. I don't...” He shook his head. “I don't remember being Michael. I don't remember anything before I was five.”
“You knew my name.”
His brows drew together and he dropped his eyes to the floor. Quatre cleared his throat. “Would anyone like something to drink?”
“Jack and Coke,” two voices, in the exact same husky tone, answered in unison. Duo's eyes shot to the older man who grinned.
“Seems you're a lot like your old man, huh?”
“I don't know that I'd say that,” Duo said softly. “A lot of people like Jack and Coke.”
Brandon smirked, flipping his braid over his shoulder to lay across his chest. “You kept up tradition.”
He nodded slowly. “All I knew was that... it was important, for some reason.”
They sat in silence for a long moment before Samantha cleared her throat. “So, you're a model?”
He shook his head. “No, we just did it for Quatre. I work in a sawmill.”
The Day family gaped and all but Quatre frowned in the confusion. The blond simply hid a small smile behind his hand. “That just won't do,” Samantha said.
The braided man frowned. “I'm proud of my job. I just got promoted not too long ago.”
Brandon nodded. “And I'm sure you're very good at it, but we can't the son of Brandon Day working in a sawmill.”
Wufei choked on his water and Heero's eyes widened. Duo continued to frown in confusion, patting his back. “You all right, Fei?”
“Brandon Day,” he looked to Duo with wide eyes. “Brandon Day develops software,” he said in a hushed voice, eying the man who looked so much like his lover. “Duo, he's worth more than Heero... than Quatre, even.”
Duo turned his wide eyes back to them. “I... excuse me...”
“I didn't mean to upset him.”
Heero shook his head. “He isn't upset. He's just a little overloaded, I think.”
Samantha chewed her lip. “He's had a difficult life, hasn't he?”
Wufei paused, exchanging glances with Heero. He wasn't sure if it was his place to say anything. “He's... one of the strongest people I've ever met, and, no, things haven't always been easy on him. But he's a bright light for everyone around him. He's brash and outgoing.” He grimaced. “He can be loud and talks too much. He doesn't realize there are certain things you really shouldn't talk about in public.”
She laughed and elbowed Brandon. “Sounds like someone else I know.”
Wufei smiled. “He has a very kind heart and giving nature.”
Brandon studied Wufei as he spoke. “Are you two lovers?”
He tensed and looked to Heero and then back to Brandon. Not answering was answer enough to give proof that he was, but it was Duo's place to tell his parents.
“Yes,” a husky voice answered from behind Wufei and all looked up to Duo who moved to sit between Heero and Wufei. He gathered both of their hands in his. “They both are,” he said with an edge to his voice, as if daring his family to disapprove.
They looked between the three and it was Samantha who finally spoke. “And the two of you don't mind sharing him?”
Heero smirked slightly. “We all share each other. I have no more, nor less, love for Duo than I do Wufei.” The other two nodded.
“Oh my.”
Brandon laughed. “Damn, son, how do you have the energy to be with two people at once?”
“He consumes unholy amounts of caffeine,” Wufei answered.
“Oh? I thought we were just sex addicts,” Duo said casually, put at ease by Brandon's easy going nature.
“Duo!” Wufei exclaimed. “There are certain things a person doesn't say in front of their parents.”
Brandon and Mark were howling, whether from Duo's quip or Wufei's reaction was anybody's guess.
“How did you get together?”
“Fei and I work together and we... hung out a lot. It took me forever to convince him to come to the club I like to go to, but I finally did and there was Heero.” He grinned to their Japanese lover. “Sitting at the end of the bar, rejecting everyone that came along.”
Mark raised a brow as he looked to Heero. “What was your criteria?”
“Two people willing to put in what it takes to make a threesome work.”
“One isn't enough for you?”
He smirked. “I'm high maintenance.”
Brandon snorted another laugh. “So, how exactly did you talk them into it?”
Wufei's face was turning red, much to the other's amusement. Duo grinned. “First he kissed Fei senseless. Then I wiped out a few of his braincells and he carted us off to his hotel to make sure we were compatible. And it turned out we were quite compatible.” He looked to Wufei with a leer. “Did we get any sleep that night?”
“Would you shut up?”
Mark chuckled. “A shy lover, how sweet. Maggie's the same way.”
Samantha shook her head. “What amazes me is that even with being separated after twenty-three years, he still turned out just like his father.”
Duo smirked. “Dinah always said... I would.” His whole body seemed to drop a few degrees and he shivered.
“Yes,” Samantha agreed soberly. “She did.”
He shoved the oppressive feeling of dread aside. “I wish I could tell you what happened, but I don't know.”
Sensing something close to distress in his brother's voice, Mark opted to change the direction of the conversation. “So, Mic... sorry. Duo, how'd you get that name anyway?”
“Another kid on the streets took me into his gang. He went by Solo and decided he needed a second in command.” He chuckled softly at the memory.
“The streets?” Brandon asked and Duo took in his family's reaction.
“Yeah, I lived on the streets. I didn't know where else to go or what do to. And it's dangerous out there if you're by yourself, so when Solo asked me to join his gang, I jumped at the chance.” He shrugged. “Safety in numbers.”
Brandon gazed sadly at his youngest son. “Were you kept safe?”
He looked to his father and smiled softly. “Yeah. I was.”
Samantha gazed at him. To know that he'd grown up on the streets but was now a hard working young man who was supporting himself was amazing. “Mic... sorry, Duo, I hope you didn't think I was putting your job down earlier. It's a respectable job. It's just that you should have so much more. You don't have to live paycheck to paycheck.”
“I don't take handouts.”
Brandon shook his head. “There are no handouts in family.”
Family. This was his family. And somehow he knew, without having to ask, that there should have been a sister there, but she wasn't there... and she never would be again. For some unknown reason he couldn't give name to, fear... terror welled up in his chest. “I can't,” he blurted, jumping to his feet. “I can't,” he repeated, running from the room.
Heero and Wufei gazed at the family first before exchanging glances. Heero cleared his throat. “We need to be with him.”
“You're Greg Matthews adopted son, aren't you?” Mark asked.
He looked to Duo's brother. “Yes, I am.” He stood. “I'm sorry that this didn't go as I'm sure you hoped it would, but we need to go.”
They stood and the Day family stood, as well. Heero held out his hand toward Brandon and the older man shook it. “We'll give you a call.”
Brandon smiled. “Thank you. I know it'll be difficult for him, but we can't just walk away now that we've found him.”
Heero nodded. “And I'm sure he wouldn't want that, either.”
They found Duo at the car, leaning his back to it and mind lost in his thoughts. Wufei rubbed Duo's upper arms and pulled him into the car. Duo remained huddled in Wufei's arms and the ride home was made in relative silence. They pulled him up to the penthouse as he seemed to be in an almost catatonic state. They stripped him and put him to bed, curling around him protectively. He wrapped his arms tightly around Wufei as Heero pressed to his back.
“Are you all right?” Heero whispered in his ear.
Duo swallowed, wanting to say that he was fine, but not willing to go against his motto and lie. “No,” he whispered in a strangled voice.
“What's wrong?” Wufei asked. “I would have thought you'd be happy to find your family.”
“I don't want to think about it right now. Let it go... Please.”
Wufei raised his head to kiss Duo softly. “For now.”
“Thank you.”
The emotional overload had drained Duo and he quickly fell to sleep while Heero and Wufei remained awake, watching over their normally overly cheerful lover. It was near two in the morning when Duo began stirring in his sleep and Heero and Wufei exchanged worried glances.
“Do you think...”
“No,” Duo murmured, trying to push Wufei away as he bucked against Heero. The Japanese man tightened his arms around him.
“It's all right,” he said in a soothing voice.
Duo shook his head frantically. “No... get off me... please.” Sobs hitched his voice and he began fighting in earnest. “That hurts!”
Obsidian and sapphire eyes flew wide. “Oh shit,” Wufei exclaimed.
Duo finally managed to break free, eyes flying wide. He scrambled to the foot of the bed, folding his arms over his stomach as he leaned over the edge and threw up. Heero ran to the bathroom while Wufei moved cautiously toward the brunette.
“Duo? What happened?”
Large violet eyes shifted to the Chinese man and dropped quickly. “I'm sorry. I don't... I didn't...”
“What did you see in your dream?”
He shook his head, pulling his knees to his chest. “I can't remember... I was just...” He closed his eyes. “I don't want to know, Fei. I don't want to remember.”
From what they'd heard, Wufei couldn't really blame him. Heero returned and handed a glass of water to Duo before cleaning up the carpet.
“Sorry,” Duo muttered.
Heero looked up. “No reason to be.” He looked back down to the floor. “You're going to have to face it sooner or later,” he said softly.
Duo tensed. “Maybe... but not right now. I can't.”
“You're stronger than you give yourself credit for.”
He idly watched Heero clean up his mess and throw the towels in the corner before climbing back onto the bed. Heero pulled him into his arms and dragged him back up to the top of the bed where Wufei curled around him, too.
“You're going to have to face it sooner or later, Duo.”
“I'll do it later.”
Heero gently grabbed his arm and turned him to his back. “They'll come back whether you want them to or not. The memories are already breaking through. Wouldn't you rather be in control of when they do?”
His brows drew together. “You mean... try to make them come back?” Heero nodded. Duo looked to Wufei.
“They're already on the edge of your mind, Duo. Face them with us here, next to you.”
“Now?”
Wufei nodded. “I don't really think you have a choice.”
He dropped his gaze for a moment and took a deep breath. “I'll try, but if... if it gets too much, I'm stopping.”
“If it gets too much, we'll stop you,” Heero promised, running his hand comfortingly down Duo's arm.
Duo bit his lip. He couldn't do this laying down. He sat up and leaned against the headboard. He closed his eyes. “It was my fifth birthday. I remember... I wanted to spend the day at the mall.” His brows drew together. “We always chose where to go on our birthdays, unless it was something crazy...” He licked his lips, pulling up his one clear memory.
“Dad asked me what I wanted to do next and I said I wanted to go on the carousel.”
Allowing the memory to come and expand, he remembered taking two rides on the double tiered carousel before heading for the arcade. “Then we went to the arcade. There... there was this guy,” his breath hitched slightly. “He told me he knew where better games were.”
His voice drifted off as the events unfolded before his mind's eye. She had tried to stop him, but the older man had easily overpowered them and shoved them into his van. The next time he'd awakened, they were in a small, dimly lit room. He'd huddled against his sister, fear evident in his small frame. And then the man came into the room.
He jerked, closing his eyes and shaking his head. He shoved from the memories, blocking whatever else followed.
“Duo?”
He curled to his side, burying his face in Wufei's chest as Heero was a strong, protective presence against his back. “No more, please. Don't make me remember any more,” he sobbed.
“It's enough for now,” Heero said, kissing the top of Duo's head. The small amount Duo had given them only left them open to more questions. What happened to his sister? Why did the man take them? How did Duo get away? Heero shook his head. Those weren't answers they were going to get that night.
None of them slept well the rest of the night and climbed out of bed early. Wufei showered quickly and moved to the kitchen to start breakfast. Heero started the coffee while Duo silently disappeared into the bathroom.
“What do we do now?” Wufei asked.
Heero shook his head. “I have no idea. I don't want to push him too fast, but I don't like seeing him like this either.”
Wufei nodded his agreement as he whisked the batter for pancakes. “I guess we just have to take it step by step.”
Heero gazed at the doorway, brows drawn in thought. “I can't believe how much he looks like his father.”
“I know. It took me a second to realize we hadn't somehow stepped into the twilight zone.” He looked to Heero. “But once she called him Michael...”
Heero looked to him. “Yeah.”
“Can you throw some bacon in the microwave for me?”
Heero stared at the back of Wufei's head as he dipped puddles of batter onto the counter-top grill. “Are you crazy?”
He smirked. “I'm here to supervise. Just put six pieces on a paper towel and put it in the microwave for seventy-five seconds.”
“I bet the microwave will blow up,” he muttered as he moved to the fridge. He put the bacon on the paper towel as ordered and put it in the microwave before moving to fix himself a cup of coffee. He poured another for Wufei and set it beside him.
Wufei sipped the black, bitter drink. “Thank you.”
He nodded, sitting at the table and unfolding the paper. Several minutes later, Wufei sniffed the air with a frown and looked up to the microwave to see two minutes and seventeen seconds remaining. “Shit!”
He pulled the burning bacon from the microwave and looked to Heero. “I said seventy-five seconds. What did you put it on?”
“Seventy-five seconds!”
A fine black brow raised. “Apparently not. Hit the zero by accident?”
Heero pursed his lips as he looked at the charred strips of turkey bacon. “With two minutes remaining... I guess I must have.”
A snorted laugh greeted them from the doorway. “Fei, you've got to stop trying to believe there's hope for Heero in the kitchen.”
Heero stared at the black slabs of meat. “Just so you know, it wasn't my idea.”
Duo nodded, dumping the inedible slices of meat down the disposal. “Yeah, I figured that.”
Heero plopped at the table, as Duo threw fresh slices of bacon in the microwave, feeling decidedly inept. What kind of person couldn't even work a microwave properly? “Sorry.”
Duo moved from the appliance and sat in Heero's lap, running his hands through careless, chocolate locks. “Don't be sorry. You've been pampered for far too long to know how to work something so mundane as a microwave.”
Heero gazed at the brunette, brows drawn together before he could stop the reaction. “Excuse me for not being allowed to do anything more than what is expected of... pampered spoiled brats.” He ground his teeth. “Do you have any idea how weird it was to be born in the slums and raised in the suburbs?” Two soft but affirmative 'no's' met his ears.
“I was... unworthy.”
Duo tightened his arms around his neck, sighing softly. “I hardly believe that. If you weren't meant to be where you are, you wouldn't be.” He dropped a quick kiss to his lips. “Now stop feeling sorry for yourself because you can't boil water.”
Heero chuckled softly and pulled Duo back in for another kiss. Wufei glanced over his shoulder, smiling softly as he watched them get lost in the kiss, tongues caressing and hands roaming. He tilted his head to get a better angle as Duo shifted to straddle Heero and braced his hands on the back of the chair.
'Beautiful,' Wufei surmised as he returned to breakfast. A moment later, he turned back around as he heard a muffled whimper. Duo had his forehead pressed to Heero's shoulder and was trembling slightly.
“I'm sorry. I can't.”
Heero kissed his temple. “Hey, relationships aren't all about sex. Just... don't pull away.”
Duo raised up and met deep sapphire eyes. He could see the questions and worry in them and there was only one thing he could think of to relieve some of the concern. “Don't ask any questions. Don't prod for more information, but... he didn't rape me.”
