Heero put the first aid kit away and left the bathroom. He'd never purposely sat still for someone to injure him before, and it had freaked him a little when the blade had touched his neck. The only thing that kept him from leaping off the bed was the knowledge that it was for Wufei and Duo. He moved down to the living room where the teams were gathered.
Quatre sat at a computer, monitoring Grant and Wufei. He glanced up to Heero and his eyebrows raised as he took in the bandage on his neck. “What happened?”
He shrugged. “Had to make it believable.”
Duo shook his head from the sofa. “Never thought I'd see the day when you let someone slit your throat.”
Heero studied the pale brunette. “Are you feeling all right?”
He nodded. “Just tired.”
“He refuses to go to bed.” Blake stood.
“What's the status?”
Quatre looked back to the computer. “They're heading to Memphis. Your team will leave in a few minutes.” He handed Heero a locater that tracked Wufei. “You and one of the other teams will drive. The other is going to fly to Memphis and hopefully move in to get Knight before you even get there.”
Duo snorted. “Won't happen. He won't show up first.”
“So you've said. That doesn't mean we shouldn't make preparations just in case.” Quatre handed an ear piece to Heero, that both allowed him to listen and talk to the others on the teams. “When Wufei wakes up, calm him down.”
Heero snorted. “I'm probably the one he's going to be most pissed at.”
“I say we let him stay pissed,” Duo offered from the couch. “He's gonna have a hard time acting sad, so angry will work just as well when he meets Knight.”
“I don't think he's going to need help being angry when he sees him,” Heero said. “All right, let's move out.”

Wufei shifted slightly and Grant tensed and onyx eyes slowly began to open. The Chinese man groaned slightly and raised his hands to his temples, too out of it to realize his wrists were handcuffed together. Grant pulled a bottle of water from the backseat and handed it over. “There's painkillers in the glove box.”
Wufei quickly found them and downed four. A moment later, he fell back to sleep and Grant sighed in relief. The reprimand was held off for a little longer. The piece in his ear hummed slightly, revealing that the next communication was on a closed link, Quatre's voice came into his ear.
“How's it going?”
“Lovely. There's not much traffic at one in the morning and sleeping beauty went back to sleep. So my ears have a small reprieve.”
Quatre chuckled. “I'll be honest; I don't envy you the tongue lashing you're going to get.”
He grinned slightly. “It's all good. I'm used to it. My girlfriend's got a set of lungs on her that she loves exercising on a regular basis.”
Quatre laughed. “Are you a bad boyfriend?”
“Not bad, she just doesn't like the fact that I'm a Preventer. She wants me to have a less dangerous job and doesn't get the fact that it was either this or jail.”
“I don't think you'd do well in jail.”
“No,” he agreed. “I don't have the hardened criminal thing going for me.”
“So, exactly what happened in the Bronx? If you don't mind my asking.”
“Not at all.” He leaned back in his seat, glad for a distraction from the monotonous darkness around him. “I moved up there for a change of scenery. I grew up in a small town and felt I was cheated somehow, so as soon as I graduated I moved to New York. I did a few hacking jobs for a friend, nothing serious, but he was bragging about my abilities to the wrong people.
“I was offered big money to do a couple of jobs and had no clue that the two beneficiaries were... less than friendly with each other. Both wanted me exclusively and I realized that my little game had just turned too serious, so I tried to back out and they sent goons out to gather me up.”
He scratched at his eyebrow. “There's a stigma around computer geeks that we're all scrawny and weak, so they weren't really expecting to face a black belt in karate. Two of the thugs were dead by the time the cops showed up at my apartment and the others ran. It was chalked up to a break in and their deaths were ruled as self-defense.
“After that, I decided I didn't really like the city life anymore and moved back to my hometown.”
“I see.”
He glanced into the rear view and saw Heero's car a mile or so behind them. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Shoot.”
“How did y'all become Gundam pilots anyway? You were all kids.”
There was a soft sigh on the other end of the reception. “We all had different reasons. Heero was raised to fight, trained practically from birth. For Duo it was revenge. He grew up on the streets of L2 and had lost everything he ever cared for. For Trowa, well, his past is somewhat similar to Heero's. He wasn't trained in the same way, but he was a mercenary. I fought because I was tired of the fighting. I wanted it to end and no one seemed like they were going to do anything. And Wufei fought in honor of his late wife.”
Grant started and glanced to the sleeping Chinese man. “He was married?”
“Yeah. It was an arranged marriage, and neither of them really wanted it, but he did respect her. She died in his arms after an attack so he set down his books and took up his sword.”
Grant shook his head. “Y'all have been through a lot, huh?”
“So have others,” Quatre said softly. “We just did what needed doing. But I'll be honest, we were all very glad when there was no need for the Gundams anymore. Grant, I need you to do me a favor.”
“What's that?”
The blond was silent for a moment. “Heero vowed after the Mariemaia incident that he'd never kill again, and he's kept that vow. But... with everything that's happened, I don't think he'd think twice about putting a bullet in Knight. Trowa and Blake already know that, so they'll help you. If Knight has to be killed... Don't let Heero be the one to do it.”
Grant nodded even though the blond couldn't see him. “All right.”
“Thank you. Okay, I'm switching it back to open-com now.”

Quatre glanced to Duo. “Stop fighting it and go to sleep. It's hours yet before the action starts.”
Duo tossed his magazine to the floor. “I just wish I coulda gone with them.” He rubbed his eyes. “I'm not used to Blake going into action without me. He's my partner; I should be there with him.”
Quatre understood that feeling. It had been difficult for him when Trowa had decided to join the Preventers. That hadn't been an option for him as he had to take over Winner Enterprises. He'd gone on a few special missions when needed, but after the assassination attempt even those were put to an end.
“I know how you feel, but look on the bright side, once you're better you'll get to go back to the field.”
Duo tried to summon a smile for his friend's optimism, but couldn't quite do it. He settled back further into his pillows and pulled the blanket snuggly around his shoulders. “Wake me when something happens.”
“I will.”

Wufei shifted on the uncomfortable seat and awareness of where he was slammed into focus and he jolted up, grimacing as he was caught by the seat belt. He lifted a hand, surprised as the other followed and stared down at them before turning a menacing glare to the driver.
“How dare you! There was no reason to drug me!”
Grant held out an ear piece. “Talk to Yuy, it was his idea.” Grant could hear the Japanese Preventer cursing him under his breath. “And try to remember everyone on the team is listening.”
Wufei turned the device on and shoved it in his ear. “Heero.”
“Yes?”
“You do realize that I have a history of castrating people who piss me off, don't you?”
Silence. “You wouldn't seriously...” Heero left it hanging, but the pitch of his voice was a little higher than normal.
“Try me,” he ground out. “Don't you ever drug me again. Got it?”
He looked to Grant and the hacker ducked down a little, sure his only saving grace was the fact he was driving. “Why the hell am I handcuffed?”
“To keep up appearances that you’re being kidnapped.”
He looked out the window and neither said anything for several hours. But a constant stream filled their ears from the other car. Blake was asking questions about the circus of all things. He 'oohed' and 'awed' like a child as Trowa told him stories about the trapeze act and the lions. Wufei watched the sunrise, about to doze off again when Heero asked Blake an interesting question.
“How did you and Duo wind up together?”
“What do you mean? We've been partners for two years.”
“But only dating for five months,” Trowa pointed out.
“He was... sort of seeing someone else until about a year ago.”
Wufei raised an eyebrow at Blake's uneasy tone. Sort of seeing someone? “Who?”
There was a long moment of silence and Wufei really wished he could see into the other car.
“Oh shit!”
Wufei and Grant exchanged curious glances at Trowa's shocked explicative. “What?” More silence. “Would someone please answer me?”
“It was me.”
Wufei nodded calmly. “I see.”
“It wasn't serious,” Heero explained. “We love each other, but not like that. It was more... stress relief or friends with benefits.”
“Oh.” It was in the past, he told himself. They hadn't even been in love. Duo was obviously head over heels for the blond Preventer and Heero had told Wufei he loved him. He'd seen proof of it in his cobalt eyes. He took a breath. No, it didn't matter. “So, Blake, how did you two end up together?”
Relieved sighs were breathed over the comm and Blake went into his story. “Well, we were on a mission on L2 about seven months. I knew it was going to be hard on him, but I didn't realize exactly how hard. I won't go into details because he'd wring my neck, but he needed comfort and I offered it. After that, things just sorta progressed. But we weren't exclusive until five months ago.”
Wufei snorted after several minutes of silence. “Guess now I know who to thank for your kissing abilities.” It shocked laughter out of all listening and Wufei's face flamed. He'd completely forgotten about the two other teams.
******
Duo groggily opened his eyes and looked up to Quatre. The blond smiled. “Hey, they're in Tennessee, got about thirty minutes before they hit Memphis.”
