Heero leaned against the door frame, eyes briefly meeting Wufei's before they both looked to Duo. The braided man was perched on the window seat, gazing blankly out the window. He'd been uncharacteristically subdued all morning. Not that they didn't in some small way understand, but it was difficult to see him acting so unlike himself.
“Duo?” He looked to Heero. “What can we do to help you?”
At first, it didn't seem he was going to answer, but after a long moment, he looked to them. “I'm not sure,” he said quietly. “I...” His brows drew together and he looked to the side. “I don't think there's anything you can do.” He dropped to the floor. “I'm going to take a nap.”
Wufei sat on the love seat, not sure how to handle the situation. He tried to put himself in Duo's position. How would it feel to lose your memories and family and convince yourself they were dead only to find out twenty-three years later that they were looking for you? He looked to Heero.
“It's repressed memories, not amnesia.”
Heero nodded. “I agree. That man must have done something horrible to him.”
“Or to his sister. From what I know of him, he cares more of other's pain than his own.”
“I believe that.” Heero shook his head. “But more than likely... he hurt them both.”
******
“She's a pretty little thing, isn't she? But then... so are you.” The man leered as he looked between the siblings. “Only question now is... who first?”
He swallowed and looked to his older sister. “What's he talking about?”
Her brows drew together. “Don't worry about it, okay? I'll take care of it and Dad will be here soon.”
The man chuckled. “Think so? He denied my demands.”
She raised her chin. “No. He'd do anything to get us back.”
He shook his head. “He involved the police. I told him not to.”
She sneered. “Like he'd listen to a crazed, dumb ass who is so pathetic he stoops to kidnapping kids to get money.”
The man grabbed her by the front of her shirt and slapped her hard.
“Dinah!” He ran to the man and kicked his shin. “You leave my sister alone!”
The man snarled and pushed him to the floor on his stomach, twisting his arm behind his back. “No.” He struggled but only managed to bring himself more pain. “Get off me!” A knee pressed into his back. “It hurts!”
Duo shot up in bed, chest heaving. Heero and Wufei were at his side instantly, wanting to offer comfort but afraid to touch him. He stared at the sheets.
“Ransom... he was holding us for ransom,” he whispered. He fisted his hands in the sheets. “He refused to pay. He abandoned us.”
Wufei shook his head. “You don't know that. You need to ask him what happened.”
Duo chewed his lip a moment, somewhat surprised he actually remembered the dream, and terrified of what came next. He was pretty sure he hadn't lied to Heero and Wufei. He didn't think the man had raped him. He shook his head sharply, not ready to delve any deeper into the recesses of his mind just yet.
He looked to the clock, surprised to see it was almost four. “I didn't mean to sleep that long.”
“You needed the rest,” Heero said.
He rubbed the back of his neck. “I guess.”
Heero took a breath. “Why don't you call them? Tell them what you remembered and ask what happened.”
His jaw flexed. “What if he did refuse to pay?”
“He doesn't strike me as the type to abandon his children, Duo,” Wufei said. “Call him.”
“I...” He shook his head. “I'm not ready to deal with this shit.”
******
Wufei stamped into his boots, the sound of the shower running in the background as he looked to the bed. Duo stirred slightly and pushed up to his elbows as he saw Wufei already dressed. He glanced to the clock and his eyes widened.
“Shit. Why didn't you wake me up?”
Wufei pushed him back down to the bed and sat on the edge, brushing chestnut bangs back from his forehead. “You're not going anywhere today.”
“What?”
“When was the last time you got a decent night's rest? Duo, ever since the nightmares started you've gotten... almost catatonic at times. I'm worried about you and, right now, I don't trust you to run a saw.” He shook his head. “Three weeks without real sleep would drag anyone down.”
He relaxed back to the bed, every bit as exhausted as he looked. “Then what am I supposed to do?”
“Stop hiding, Duo. You need to face this.”
He licked his lips. “The dreams will stop sooner-”
“No.” They looked toward the bathroom as Heero came out with a towel around his waist and one about his shoulders. “I did some research. It's PTSD, and if you won't face the memories, they'll find a way to make you. It's healthier and safer to face it willingly.”
Duo closed his eyes. “I'll think about it.”
Wufei kissed his forehead. “Just rest today. Love you.”
He smiled weakly. “Love you, too.” He watched Wufei leave the room and rolled to his side to watch Heero get dressed.
The Japanese man tightened his tie and sat on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling?”
“Like a dumb ass.”
His brows drew together. “Duo, I can't imagine how difficult this must be for you. We're not pushing you because we think it'll be easy. We're doing it because we care.”
Duo huffed. “I know, I know.” He cleared his throat and dropped his eyes. “I will think about it, Heero. Okay?”
Heero smiled. “Okay.” He placed a quick kiss to Duo's lips. “I'll try to make it up for lunch, but we have a convention coming up, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to.”
“That's fine.” He waited until Heero left and crawled out of bed. He made himself a cup of coffee and sat in the window seat. He knew he was worrying Heero and Wufei, but it bothered him to no end that this was a situation that he had no control over. What made it worse was that his control was taken away by his own mind. He didn't like the fact that events that had happened over two decades ago were festering to be recognized and dealt with. Why couldn't he just let it go?
He gazed out over the parking lot, watching as the landscaper cleaned up the fallen leaves from the trees. He used to hate autumn and winter. On the streets, those were definitely the worst of the seasons. But once he had a warm home, he'd come to find simple pleasures in fireplaces and central heating. And he'd learned to love the holidays.
He pulled his knees to his chest, dragging his mind back to the topic at hand. He had to do something soon, or he was sure he'd lose his mind. He sat for hours, trying to wrap his mind around what he needed to do and what he wanted to do. A little before one, he took a shower and laid down on the sofa.
He was awakened by soft spoken words and pushed up to his elbows, looking up to Heero and then Wufei. He licked his lips. “I need... do y'all have Brandon's number?”
Heero smiled. “Yeah.”
He chewed his lip. “Can you call?”
He nodded and dialed.
“Day residence.”
“May I speak with Brandon, please?”
“One moment.”
Seconds later, a breathless, husky voice answered. “Hello?”
“Is this a bad time?”
A sigh of relief. “No, I just... I was hoping...”
He smiled. “Hoping it was us?”
“Yeah.”
“He's remembered some things that he wants to confirm.”
“Of course. Would you like to come over to our house?”
Heero looked to Duo. “Would you mind going to their house to meet with them?”
Apprehension tightened his chest, but he nodded slowly. “That's fine.”
******
Duo stared at the large house as they got out of the car. His brows drew together slightly and he moved to the right side of the house, almost as if in a trance.
“Duo?”
He didn't answer Heero's call. The door opened and Brandon stepped out as Duo crept around the side of the house. The older man released a slow breath before following, Wufei and Heero behind him.
They found Duo staring down at two bushes that were three feet apart. He put his hand to the side of the house as if to steady himself and closed his eyes. “You'd think I'd have learned,” he said hoarsely.
Brandon gave a weak chuckle. “Samantha wanted to tell you to change hiding places, but the rest of us thought it was cute that you chose the same spot to hide every time we played. You were always so amazed to be found so fast.”
Duo looked to the right at what appeared, from that angle, to be another building in the backyard. He licked his lips. “My real hiding place,” he whispered.
Brandon stared at his youngest son's profile as the young man fought to take in each memory as it assailed him. “Mark always knew where to find you, but he'd never tell me where it was. I guess I should have known it was the maze.”
Duo closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead. It was all so strange. Objects from the past brought up memories that the present was far removed from. Two totally different lives were colliding and it was difficult for him to accept the fact that both were his.
“Michael?”
“Sir?” He shook his head, looking to Brandon. “Please don't call me that. It... confuses me.”
“I'm sorry, Duo. It's difficult to call you by a different name.”
“I understand. It's just... Michael was a child... I'm not. I guess that doesn't make sense, but...” He trailed off.
Brandon nodded slowly. “It makes sense. Why don't we go inside?”
“All right.” Duo followed the man into the house, Heero and Wufei on either side. He led them into the den where Samantha, Mark, and his wife, Maggie, waited.
Duo paused in the doorway, face uncertain as he looked around the room. “I'm not allowed in here.”
Samantha shook her head. “You are now, baby.”
He looked to her and a much younger face superimposed itself over her. “Mama, I...” His breath quickened and his legs would have dropped him to the floor if Brandon, Heero, and Wufei hadn't supported him. He closed his eyes.
“I can't.”
“Yes, you can,” Wufei whispered.
He took several deep breaths as he was pulled into the room and sat on a sofa. He leaned forward and took slow, deep breaths, managing to calm himself down.
Samantha waited until he sat up and smiled softly. “Would you like something to drink?”
“Tea, if you don't mind.”
“Not at all.” She left the room and Duo looked around it.
“Mi... Duo, this is my wife, Maggie.”
He looked to her and forced a smile. “Hi.”
She smiled back. “Hi, it's a pleasure to meet you. Mark talks all the time about you and what a mischievous child you were.”
Wufei laughed softly. “Some things never change.”
Duo rolled his eyes slightly, but he couldn't release the tension that kept him on pins and needles. He pushed to his feet and wandered around the room he'd always tried to sneak into as a child. It had become something of a game between the three of them. Only Dinah had ever managed to make it in. he paused at the back window and gazed at the large maze behind the house. He closed his eyes.
“You didn't pay the ransom.”
Brandon sucked in a breath. “He didn't give me time and the police kept slowing me down.”
“He said not to call the police.”
Brandon shook his head. “I'd already reported you missing. The police were at the house when he called.”
Duo turned to look at the man as Samantha returned with a tray of drinks. “He said since he wasn't getting his money,” he ground between his teeth, “he'd take his payment from us... He asked which of us wanted to... go first.”
Brandon's breath heaved in his chest, his violet eyes wide with horror and a fear he'd never dared to voice. “Did he?”
Duo squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head. “I can't say for sure, but I don't think he touched me.” He leaned his back to the wall and wrapped his arms around his stomach. “But...” Phantom screams echoed in his ears. “He raped Dinah... right in front of me. Kept telling me I was next.”
No one moved as he struggled to keep going. His chest was tight and he wanted to shove it all away and go back to hiding, but he realized he couldn't do that now. He'd opened the can of worms and couldn't get it closed again. “She screamed for almost an hour, begging for him to stop. At first she was quiet and kept trying to tell me everything would be all right, but he was brutal.”
He fell silent and after several minutes, Heero cleared his throat. “Then what?” he asked softly.
Duo grit his teeth and slid down the wall to the floor as he allowed the memories to progress.
(flashback)
Her screams finally dimmed to soft sobs as the man got off of her and zipped his pants up. He looked to the young boy and smirked. “I'll be back for you in a little while.” He climbed up the stairs and left the basement.
He crawled toward Dinah and sat beside her. “Are you okay?”
She swallowed and looked up to him. “We'll get out of here, Mikey. You'll see. Dad will come for us.”
He laid his forehead on her shoulder. “Why'd he do that do you?”
“It's...” She ran her hand down her brother's short braid. “It's a grown up thing, Mikey. I won't let him hurt you, too. Okay?”
Tears trekked down his face. “I don't wanna watch him hurt you again. I wish Daddy would come.”
She sniffed. “He will.”
Exhaustion finally pulled both under as they cried themselves to sleep. He was awakened sometime later as calloused hands ripped him away from his sister and shoved him to the floor, hovering over him. “More time, he says. Your Daddy apparently doesn't understand the situation he's creating for you.”
He shivered in revulsion as fingers ran deceptively gently down his cheek. “Let us go.”
He chuckled. “But then I couldn't get my money.” He ran his hands over the tiny body.
“Leave him alone,” Dinah begged. “He's barely five years old.”
“Which would mean he'll be awfully tight.”
He didn't quite understand the meaning of the man's words, but panic flared when he began pulling his clothes off. “Don't! Please don't!” His cries died as a gun was shoved under his chin.
“Do behave. I'd hate to have to kill you.”
He pressed his lips together, muffling his panicked sobs as the man flipped him to his stomach. A scream came from behind him and the weight suddenly left. He rolled to his side to see a baseball bat in Dinah's hands and the man knocking over the lantern as he fell to the side.
“Run, Mikey!”
He grabbed his shirt and jumped to his feet as flames began licking up the walls. He ran for the stairs and screamed as he heard a gunshot. He looked back to see Dinah collapse to the floor and the man trying to put out the flames rising up his pants legs. He fled the house, running until he collapsed.
(end flashback)
Duo tightened his arms around his legs, forehead pressed to his knees. Silent tears ran down his face, as they did with almost everyone in the room. “He... shot her in the forehead... there was so much blood and I was scared.” He looked up to Brandon. “I left her there... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.”
Brandon shook his head and pulled him into his arms. “You did the right thing. There was nothing you could have done to save her.” He kissed the top of his head. “When the calls stopped coming... I went into a panic. We never found out exactly what happened, but we didn't stop searching. Even though they didn't find your body, they told us you'd probably died in the fire, too.”
His voice broke. “I kept looking for several more months before I just couldn't anymore.”
“And that's when you dropped out of society,” Heero surmised.
Samantha answered for him. “We only had one child left. We couldn't risk something happening to Mark, too.”
Heero nodded. “That's understandable.”
Duo leaned back against the wall. “Damn.”
Brandon sat back. “Do you need anything?”
“Yeah, my dignity back.”
Samantha handed him a glass of tea. “There's nothing wrong with crying after you've been hurt.”
He guzzled the tea and took a tired breath. “I'm gonna need therapy again after this. Wonder if Tro's working tonight.”
Wufei shook his head. “I don't think going to the club tonight is the best of ideas.”
Duo gazed at him for a long moment. “Yeah, you're probably right.” He sighed. “I'm sorry, but I think I want to head home.”
Brandon shook his head and stood, holding out a hand for his son. “After that, I don't blame you.” He pulled Duo to his chest in a tight hug. “But the hard part's over, right? Now we can move on... as a family.”
It was almost a question and Duo smiled for the man. “Yeah, Dad, we can.”
Brandon released a breath as he heard 'Dad' slip from Duo, the younger man seemed equally surprised by how easily it had come. “Good. Go home and rest.”
Duo was silent as they made their way to the car, and gazed out the window, lost in thought as Heero drove them back to the hotel. He stepped into the penthouse and stood quietly for a moment in the center of the living room.
“December 15, 1981.”
Wufei frowned. “What's that?”
He turned to face them. “My birthday.”
Heero hugged him and kissed his temple. “So, you'll be twenty-nine?”
He shook his head. “Twenty-eight.” He wrapped his arms around Heero's waist and kissed him gently before reaching for Wufei. He pulled them to the bedroom.
“Duo, are you sure you're up for this?” Wufei asked as the braided man kissed at his chest after removing his shirt.
He nodded, nipping the Chinese man's collar bone. “Please, I need something good to push back the bad.”
Heero and Wufei shared a look before the Japanese man nodded. “What do you want, Duo?”
He sat on the bed and kicked his shoes off as he pulled his shirt over his head. He gripped the end of his braid and slowly loosened the plait. He combed his fingers through it and both his lovers watched in fascination as the silken waves slipped over the edge of the bed, almost touching the floor. It wasn't often he took his hair down for them and both had come to the realization, he mainly did it when he needed comfort.
Heero sat next to him and pulled the mass into his hands, running his own fingers through it. Violet eyes slipped closed. Wufei knelt in front of him, hands on the mattress on either side of him as he raised up to take his lips in a gentle kiss.
Duo cupped a hand to the side of Wufei's neck but made no move to take control of the kiss. He tilted his head as Wufei trailed his lips down his neck. Heero scooted closer behind him, brushing his hair to the side so it wouldn't be sat on, and pulled Duo to rest against his chest.
Heero ran his hands down Duo's sides, watching as Wufei moved his lips down the brunette's chest and stomach. He leaned his head back to Heero's shoulder, breaths coming quicker as Wufei unzipped his pants. Heero lifted him enough for Wufei to pull his jeans and boxers down.
Duo shivered slightly as his overheated skin was suddenly exposed to cool air and Heero nipped at his neck. “Are you all right?”
He nodded, licking his lips. Wufei massaged his thighs and gazed up into his flushed face. He swirled his tongue around the head of Duo's growing length, stroking it with his hand until it was fully erect.
Duo slit his eyes open as Wufei's tongue bathed his erection before his lips wrapped around him. Duo bucked, but Heero's hands on his hips stilled him, his thumbs running in gentle circles over the smooth skin.
Duo closed his eyes, gasping softly as Wufei sucked him while Heero lapped at his neck and nibbled his ear. The heartache that had kept him on edge for the last month finally began to subside under the onslaught of his lovers' ministrations.
Wufei shifted Duo's legs to rest on his shoulders and moved down to suck one testicle into his mouth, then he moved to the other. Duo shivered and gasped as the tongue moved lower to tease his entrance.
Heero groaned at the erotic sight. Obsidian eyes were half-lidded as he lapped at the puckered entrance before dipping his tongue in slightly. Duo's legs shook and he clenched his hands tightly on Heero's thighs.
A heavy moan ripped from Duo as the tongue pushed further in. Wufei thrust his tongue into the tight heat. None of them were strangers to rimming, but normally it was a prelude to something else. Wufei found that decidedly unfair as he felt the act was, in his opinion, one of the most intoxicating he'd ever felt. From the sounds falling from Duo's lips, Wufei figured he was in agreement.
“Shit, Fei,” he gasped, back arching slightly.
Wufei's lips curved upward as he pulled his tongue out, licking up and down the crevice and watching as the puckered hole twitched for more play. He dipped his tongue back in and Duo was practically sobbing with need.
For his own part, Heero was so turned on he felt he could cum with just one touch. It was obvious Wufei was enjoying himself and Duo was begging for release, writhing in Heero's arms. He slid his hand from Duo's hip to his length and the brunette's hands tightened on his thighs.
Obsidian eyes moved up to watch the olive skin slide over the heavy erection and he began thrusting his tongue faster. He felt the muscle around him tighten and he pulled his tongue out, smirking at the whimper of protest as he sucked two fingers into his mouth. He quickly pressed them into Duo and folded his lips around Duo's length.
The brunette's back arched as his prostate was mercilessly massaged while Heero continued to pump him and Wufei suckled the tip of his erection. It was all too much and he came with a loud cry before sagging back against Heero's chest. When he came to his senses, Wufei still sat on the floor between his legs, cheek resting on his knee.
“You're something else, you know that?”
Wufei smiled softly. “So I've heard.”
