Alphonse could hear the voices of Roy and Raymond and wondered when Roy would give him the signal. So far, all that had happened had been arguments, the occasional cursing, and the familiar feel of alchemy. They were fighting above him. Fighting, when the focus should be on finding Edward.Almost a week, Alphonse thought, almost a week since Ed had been trapped in the mine. Was Ed starving? Was he dead somewhere in the mine? What if he never got out, just kept wandering and wandering until he finally exhausted himself? Alphonse shook his head. Ed wouldn’t just lay down and die. The moment Ed found a stable place, he’d use alchemy to get out. Maybe Ed was out even now! Alphonse closed his eyes and prayed that was true. But he couldn’t look for Ed now - he had to help Roy.
He opened his eyes and kept listening. He heard Roy’s voice, followed by Ray’s, and the latter seemed closer than the other. Finally, he heard it, Roy’s signal. Immediately, Alphonse activated his transmutation circle, and the dirt above his head began to harden. Then it separated right under Roy’s feet. The Colonel dropped into the hole as planned, and then Alphonse sealed the alchemically made hole, sealing himself up with Roy. He wondered why Riza hadn’t taken the shot.
Then Roy moved, unfolding himself from where he had fallen. Alphonse felt his eyes go wide in realization of his mistake. Raymond stood before him, grinning madly. Alphonse backed up, trying to escape down his tunnel.
Alchemical light flared and Alphonse found his legs trapped by dirt coils. Raymond withdrew his hand from the wall, smiling. “If it isn’t the younger Elric brat. Seems your little plan backfired. How fortuitous to me.”
“I’m not going to help you!” Alphonse shot back.
“Oh? You will if you want to see your brother again. If he makes it out alive, that is.” Raymond stepped closer to Alphonse, smiling the kind of smile that promised pain.
“Roy knows where I am!” Alphonse’s thoughts went a mile a minute. He wasn’t sure if Raymond knew that the armor he wore was empty or not, but he couldn’t take any chances. “He’ll be coming for me!”
“Keep telling yourself that.” Ray spat. “He won’t be coming at all.” He tapped Alphonse’s helmet. “Help me, and you’ll get out alive.”
Alphonse swallowed. “Fine. I’ll help you. But you aren’t going to get away.”
“Watch me.”
The binding on Alphonse’s legs loosened, and Ray shoved Alphonse forward. The boy started forward, back out of the tunnel. He hoped Roy was waiting, or Riza. Raymond was still shoving him forward, using him as a shield. Ray was muttering, but Alphonse couldn’t make out anything the man said. He was insane, that much was clear. Alphonse needed to escape somehow. The tunnel’s entrance was coming up soon. Perhaps if Alphonse managed to break into a run just before the entrance, he could get away. Maybe even capture Raymond if he was fast enough. But if he wanted to see Ed, maybe he had to stay with Raymond.
No, Alphonse thought, he had to get away. If he didn’t, Edward would get mad at him for allowing himself to be a hostage. Al glanced back at Raymond. The man was distracted, talking with himself and pushing his hand against the armor in front of him. Alphonse watched the mouth of the tunnel come into view, the light from outside blinding anyone coming out of the dark tunnel. Alphonse broke into a run and barely made it outside before he heard a thunder crack behind him. A bullet snapped through the back plate of his armor and bounced around inside of him. The boy threw himself to the side, desperately scratching out a transmutation circle. He clapped his hands against it, willed, and then the rumbling of collapsing earth made his body shake, rattling the bullet inside him. Ray’s yell of outrage was cut off, and Alphonse rolled around onto his back, staring at the collapsed mouth of the cave. It seemed like the whole tunnel shook, rocks tumbling and crashing into one another as they collapsed. He didn’t see Raymond.
“Alphonse!”
Al looked up at Riza, at the concerned expression she had on her face. She knelt beside him, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Are you alright?” she asked softly, her eyes flickering over his dusty armor.
“Yeah.” Alphonse answered after a moment of disbelief. “I’m okay. Raymond, he’s in that cave, I think. I didn’t see him get clear.”
Riza’s eyes shifted to the pile of settling rubble. “Never assume, Alphonse.” She retrieved her radio and called in their location. A minute later, Roy appeared, looking dirty and tired, but alive. Riza told him what had happened, and Roy’s black eyes focused on Alphonse in a way that made the boy want to squirm.
Roy swept some of his air out of his eyes and sighed. “Let’s hope your alchemy didn’t do more than that. Riza, get some of the miners out here. We’ll check the rubble and make sure.”
“Sir.” Riza saluted, then lifted her radio and began speaking into it.
Alphonse shakily got to his feet and looked down at the Colonel, aware of the frown the man wore. He didn’t need to say anything. Alphonse knew.
Because of the alchemy he’d performed, he might’ve condemned Edward to death. Alphonse clenched his fists and stared at the collapse, praying his brother was okay.
