The Prince Bride
Chapter 18 "The Thieves Forest"
Princess Relena sat behind the large desk flicking through bridal magazines and occasionally picking up a piece of sample material for wedding dresses. She found a style that particularly caught her eye and with her sight locked on the page so she didn't lose her place, she absently reached for the cloth samples and raised one to see how it would fit with the style she was interested in. When she looked at the sample her eyes narrowed; she wasn't holding up a piece of satin as first thought but a pink shirt.
"Where in the world did this come from? And more importantly, what is it doing here?!"
She looked up as Rashid entered her office. The man looked rather nervous.
Noticing the princess's gaze upon him he cleared his throat.
"Come in Rashid."
"My lady." Rashid bowed low.
Princess Relena waved him over to her side. Rashid obeyed and sank to his knees like a well trained puppy next to her chair. He rested his arm upon the arm of the throne and then promptly removed it as Relena gave him an icy stare.
The princess leaned in close to the servant, at the same time Rashid turned to move closer to the princess and their foreheads connected with a loud crack.
"Ow! Shit!" the princess swore as she rubbed her forehead.
"Friggin' hell! Your head's like concrete!" Rashid replied as he rubbed his own bruised forehead.
"Excuse me?"
Rashid began to sweat profusely, realizing his mistake. "I.. Ummm... errr...."
"Perhaps you would like to repeat what you just said to the torture master?"
"My humble apologies your high and mightiness, I meant to say my head is like concrete." Rashid bowed low and contemplated kissing the princess's feet. One look at the overgrown toenails and ingrained dirt however convinced him that that was not one of the brightest ideas he'd had. He really didn't need a mouth infection on top of everything else.
"That's better." Princess Relena leaned forwards again, making sure to place a hand on Rashid's head first though so that they didn't collide again.
Rashid looked up, waiting to hear what the princess had in mind.
"As chief enforcer of all Sink, errr Sunk, I mean Sank..."
"Yes your majesty, that is a title I bear willingly."
"Don't interrupt."
"Sorry."
"That's okay, just don't do it again."
"I won't."
The princess studied the bear of a man cowering at her feet. For an enforcer who was supposed to be afraid of nothing and ruthless in his task, he sure was easily beaten. She gave a deep sigh. Hired help was so hard to get these days and she supposed she couldn't really be fussy, although how he'd reached the position of chief enforcer was beyond her. She guessed he must have paid someone off, either that or slept around a bit.
"As chief enforcer of all Sank, yes Sank, that's what my country is called, I must entrust you with a secret."
Rashid's eyes lit up. "Ahhh. So what is this juicy goss... I mean secret your highness?"
"I hear rumors that killers are after my beloved Heero. No doubt they are from Oz; those bastards are always trying to start a war."
Rashid looked surprised. It wasn't the hot gossip he had been hoping for. "My spy network has heard no such news," he failed to add that most of the spy network had lately been occupied with better activities, namely one blonde Arabian, a few potions and a couple of sheep.
Relena glared at him, Rashid wilting under the heat of the gaze. "You do not believe me?!" she sneered.
"Oh, I believe you your highness." Rashid thought he'd better start doing some serious ass kissing now. Unfortunately Relena's wasn't the ass he wanted to kiss.
Clearly agitated Relena continued. "To prevent anything at all from happening that could possibly mess up my wedding I want every single bandit and unsavory character in the Thieves Forest rounded up, arrested and put in jail."
Before Relena could continue Heero swept into the room, scowl firmly lodged in place. "Any news from my Duo?"
Both Rashid and Relena immediately stood up, Rashid cracking his skull against the desk edge, Relena ignoring him. Rashid noticed the pink shirt lying on top of some of the dress fabric samples and quickly swiped it. He'd wondered where that had gone to. Quatre would be happy to have it back, the cold air not agreeing with his naked chest. He didn't seem to mind the coolness around his
pant less hips though. Rashid stuffed the shirt into his pocket and smiled to himself. Quatre would have to pay him to have his shirt back and Rashid was looking forward to that.
Relena smiled brightly at Heero, the wattage nearly blinding the Japanese man. "It's too soon my love, much too soon. You need to have some patience."
Heero narrowed his eyes and glared before drawing himself up to his full height, which wasn't a lot, and speaking in a hard tone that brooked no argument. "He WILL come for me."
"Of that I have no doubt, but I bet he wouldn't come as much as what you will for me my Heero." Relena muttered.
"Nani?"
"I said, of course he will, Heero my love."
Heero cringed at those words and spun on his heel, leaving the room as abruptly as he'd entered.
As soon as Heero was gone Relena sat down, Rashid sinking to his knees once more beside her. "Ouch!" he mumbled as the cold concrete made it's presence known. He really needed to get thicker pants or start carrying around a cushion. It was getting embarrassing trying to explain to his soldiers how he got the bruises to his knees.
"My love will NOT be murdered!" Relena growled and swung her arm to emphasize her point, clocking Rashid across the head as she did so.
Rashid rubbed his abused head again and then ducked as the arm swung back, just missing him.
"On the day of my wedding I want the Thieves Forest empty!"
Rashid turned to his princess, imploring her with puppy eyes. "Many of the thieves will resist, your majesty and I fear that the number of our soldiers will be inadequate against such a rabble."
Relena's eyes flashed with fury. "Form a brute squad then, do what you have to but I want that forest empty before I wed!"
"It won't be easy my lady..." Rashid pleaded.
Relena looked down her nose at him. She was sick of the argument, sick of hearing excuses, simply put, she was just plain sick! "You should try ruling the world some time." she growled.
Rashid looked a little puzzled but decided to let it slide, he had more pressing things to think about.
~ * ~
Deep in the Thieves Forest beggars, murderers, assassins and the like were running in all directions, trying to escape from Rashid and the soldiers who were equally as determined to arrest them. Most weren't into bondage and so opted to run instead.
Uncle Howard's voice droned on quietly. "The day of the wedding arrived. The brute squad had their hands full carrying out the orders of Princess Relena...."
The rickety wagon creaked and groaned its way over the small bridge, the human contents inside swaying and praying that the wheels didn't drop off.
