When Vegeta returned to his room in the middle of the night, his father was waiting for him in a chair beside the bed. He froze in panic when he saw him, then confusion took over when he realized that the whole manor wasn’t in a panic. After a moment, he recovered and crept slowly into the room, keeping his eyes on his father the whole time. “You went to warn him, didn’t you?”
Vegeta jumped at hearing his father’s stern, but quiet voice and gulped. “H-How…did you…?” He trailed off as his father chuckled with dry humor.
“I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to figure it out.” Lord Hokoru turned his attention from the floor to his son. “You’re in love with him, aren’t you?” He smirked. Vegeta tensed in fear, then relaxed slightly and averted his gaze. Lord Hokoru’s smirk widened. “I knew it.” He stood and made his way over to his son, who took a step back. When he stopped in front of him, he placed a hand on his shoulder. “I knew you two were good for each other. That’s why I suggested it.” An odd sort of look appeared in his father’s eyes, but he didn’t recognize it. Almost like he was remembering a good memory, but at the same time, it pained him to remember it.
Vegeta swallowed. “You’re not…angry?”
Lord Hokoru chuckled and shook his head. “No. In fact, I’ve decided…to…to help you…and Kakarot. After all, it’s supposed to be him that leads the Doumei clan, not Akuto.” His smirk became determined.
Vegeta couldn’t help but smile in return. It faltered after a minute. “Father, I know I haven’t been the best son lately…and I-” He looked at his father, who patted his shoulder.
“Don’t worry about it son. Now that I know why you’ve been acting like you have. I knew from the beginning that Ookami wasn’t good for you. He’s got the characteristics of one who may abuse his power rather than use it respectfully.” A far off look appeared in his eyes. “Like Bardock, who was a good leader…” He whispered. “Like Kakarot will be.” He said a little louder with pride.
Vegeta let a smile grow at the statement. “Father…how are we going to overthrow Akuto? There must be something we can do to break him.” He clenched his fist in thought.
Lord Hokoru stared at his son for a moment before answering. “First, you must separate the leader from his clan…you must break his power from the inside and in order to do that, you must turn his own clan against him. It’s the only logical way when defeating someone powerful.”
Vegeta looked at his father in mild shock. “That’s brilliant.”
Lord Hokoru sighed. “I shouldn’t be doing this. He’s an ally to-”
“Not you too! He killed them without hesitation! He laughed merrily as he watched his own brother and your best friend die before him! He even slaughtered his wife and was about to do the same to a five year old boy before he managed to escape! Enough pity for the man, he doesn’t deserve it! It’s time to rebel! It’s time to fight back and have the bastard get what’s finally coming to him!” Why were they holding back? Why must he be the one to convince them that it’s time to act? What was holding them back in the first place? Fear? A plan? He didn’t understand why they waited this long, why they continued to bear the painful truth and the guilt that ate at them for so long. Perhaps…they needed someone to convince them. Perhaps they needed the strength and courage to finally stand up for what’s right and wrong. Perhaps…they needed him to convince them, to give them the courage and support that they needed.
Lord Hokoru smiled slightly at his son before it disappeared just as quickly and turned his back. “Are…you sure he did it? I don’t know the truth myself…” He trailed off, not knowing how to finish the sentence as his son answered.
“Yes. Kakarot told me what happened. I saw the agony and anger in his eyes and I know…that now is the time to act. Now is the time to get revenge and take back what Akuto stole. It’s time to gain back their honor and it’s our duty to help him. Kakarot can’t do this alone, that’s why he’s been running for so long.” Vegeta took a step toward his father as he waited for a response.
It seemed like hours until his father finally responded. “I…would like to see him. Kakarot, I mean.” He turned towards his son. “I would like to see the son of Bardock, the true leader of the Doumei clan. It’s been so long since I’ve seen him. Why, he probably looks just like his father.” Another far off look took place in his eyes as he stared passed his son.
Vegeta nodded. “Of course, but…since he’s still a wanted man, it might be a little difficult.”
Lord Hokoru nodded in thought. “He can visit, but he’ll have to be disguised though. We’ll have a private meeting. No one will know about it, but make sure it’s in the evening though. That way, he’ll be less likely to be seen and I’ll make sure most of the guards are off duty then.” He rested a hand underneath his chin as he thought it all out. “Yes. Have him come by tomorrow night.”
Vegeta couldn’t help but be a bit skeptical. “Father, forgive me for thinking such a thing, but…you’re not helping us because you want to catch Kakarot and turn him in to Akuto, are you?”
Lord Hokoru seemed surprised at first, then his expression changed to understanding. “Now, I know I probably haven’t been the best father, but really Vegeta. You should give me more credit than that. Besides, I have other reasons for helping you and maybe I’ll tell you some day, but for now, get some sleep.” He gestured toward the bed as he proceeded to leave the room.
“Father…wait.” His father paused before the door. “Did you see Akuto already?”
He tensed at the question, but answered. “Yes. He seemed quite giddy at taking my place in being part of the ceremonial plans, but it doesn’t bother me none. I was actually disapproving everything that Lord Koga suggested because I was still unable to accept that you and Ookami were to be married and so the date would be pushed back. Looks like something went according to plan, but not the way I expected.” He forced a smile. “Now, go to sleep. You know you’ll have to be up early.” He opened the door and paused. “Although, I guess I’ll let you sleep in for a little while. After all, you had to stay the night in Kyoto and listen to them banter about your future.” He gave his son a meaningful look and tried not to chuckle. “And you spent half the night ‘telling’ him what’s transpired so far.” He smirked as his son looked away with a blush. “Well, good night.” He closed the door behind him.
Vegeta couldn’t believe what just happened. His father is actually supporting him in this and he wants to see Kakarot! But did he have to embarrass him like that? He supposed he deserved it, but at the same time, it’s like his father knows what he’s going through. Perhaps Kakarot was right. Maybe his father can help him. He glanced at the bed as the soft glow of the moon illuminated it in the pitch black of night. There was no way he was going to sleep tonight. After all, he did get quite a long nap earlier in the afternoon with a certain someone, but perhaps he should try anyway. He changed into more comfortable clothes and slipped underneath the sheets. He closed his eyes and thought of the evening’s events as he waited for sleep to claim him.

Vegeta woke with the sun in his eyes and stretched. He didn’t sleep for half the night thanks to the thoughts running around in his head, but he managed to get some rest and for once, he woke up on his own. He sat up and looked out his window. The trees around the manor swayed gently in the breeze as the sunlight danced upon their branches and warmed everything it touched, promising a nice day. He couldn’t help but smile at the nice weather and proceeded to get out of bed. After he was done getting around for the day, a patient knocking sounded on his door and he answered. His father stood on the other side and smiled softly in greeting. “Good, you’re awake. Meet us in the dining hall. It’s going to be a long day for us.” Vegeta gave his father a confused look, who tried not to grit his teeth as he explained. “Lord Akuto has decided to grace us with his presence today and brought Lord Koga and Master Ookami along with him. It seems…we shall be discussing the ceremonial plans here.” Vegeta couldn’t help but sigh in annoyance at the news and Lord Hokoru looked like he wanted to do the same. “I know how you feel, but for now, you must put up with it and mind your manners. Also, don’t give away anything that you know about them. We want them to leave peacefully for today and not cause a bloody war in my house. Understand?”
Vegeta sighed again. Even with his father helping him, he still gave him orders. “Yes, but why did they come here? I thought you were no longer a part of it.”
Lord Hokoru held back a sneer and scowled instead. “Akuto wanted to visit us for the whole day and you need to know of the plans. Now, wear something decent and join us for breakfast.” His father proceeded down the hall and left his sight as he moved back into his room to put on his robes, grumbling the whole time he did so.
When Lord Hokoru returned to his guests, he couldn’t help but glance at Lord Akuto who was staring at him with a smirk on his face. Would he stop looking at him like that? He couldn’t help but shiver at the stare that unnerved him so as he took a seat next to his wife. No one seemed to see it except him. He glared back and looked at the rest of the group. “Vegeta shall be joining us shortly.”
“Oh, splendid! I can’t wait to go over all the plans with him. I’m surprised how much we’ve got done in such a short amount of time. Perhaps we don’t need to push the ceremony back after all.” Lord Koga said as Lord Hokoru frowned.
“Unfortunately,” Lord Akuto butted in. “It would take some time to actually put all this into action and get it done. So, perhaps the delay is necessary.” He looked toward Lord Hokoru with a smile after speaking.
Lord Hokoru couldn’t help but think that he was doing that on purpose. “Oh, right you are. I’m glad you’re here, Akuto. Ah, Vegeta. Nice of you to join us.” Lord Koga responded as he gestured towards Vegeta, who just entered.
Vegeta couldn’t help but glance at Ookami, who looked unbearably bored before he walked into the room and now looked positively delighted that he finally joined them. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes and breathed calmly. Seeing no where else to sit, he took his place next to Ookami and couldn’t help but lean slightly away from him as his breakfast was brought to him. Ookami rested his head on his hand as he stared at his fiancé with lust-filled eyes. “Good morning, Vegeta. You’re looking positively radiant this lovely day.” He smirked.
Vegeta let out a little puff of air as he struggled to keep in a sigh and glanced at his father, who shook his head slightly and avoided eye contact. “Good morning to you as well.” He took a sip of his tea. “So, come up with anything for the ceremony?” He wanted to get this over with. He took a bite of his breakfast as Lord Koga droned on with his plans.
“Well, with everything that we’ve come up with in such a short amount of time, we thought it best to keep the ceremony at the later date because of the amount of time the arrangements will take and spring will be in full bloom. So, with that in mind, we decided to have the altar on the far side of the garden, where the cherry trees are and plant, already full bloomed, spirea bushes all along the path to the altar…” Vegeta zoned out of the conversation as he thought about the plans to rid of the powerful man sitting next to his Master and how he’s going to convince Kakarot to meet with his father.
“So, Vegeta, as soon as you’re done, we shall get you and Ookami fitted for your robes and tomorrow we’ll find a priest to bond you two together. So, we’re going into town to do that and the day after that, we will search for the right necklaces for you two to exchange. Afterwards, we’ll have to put everything else together that might take a couple weeks, then we shall have a couple of days of rest before the ceremony.” Lord Koga looked over to Lord Akuto and smiled. Lord Akuto smiled back, approving that everything he said was correct and turned his attention to Vegeta and Ookami.
“Do you two approve? Are the plans to your liking?” He grinned cheekily as he waited for a response.
Vegeta pushed his empty dish away as Ookami wrapped an arm around his fiancé’s waist and pulled him to his side. “Yes. We are quite pleased with them and can’t wait for the results.”
Vegeta glared at the man beside him. Why can’t he answer himself? He is capable of thought. He crossed his arms and looked away from the conversation as he pouted. Lord Akuto noticed the reaction. “Vegeta, do you approve?”
He turned his attention to his enemy as he was asked the question. “Sure.” He answered in a bored tone as he thought of a way to get himself out of the conversation, until Lord Koga couldn’t keep in is excitement any longer.
“Well, Vegeta, you look like your finished. Shall we go?” He stood as his son did the same.
“Yes, father. We’re ready. Let’s go, love.” Ookami grabbed his fiancé’s hand and pulled him to his feet, then proceeded to follow Lord Koga.
“Akuto, are you not coming?” Lord Koga stopped as he looked toward his new planning companion.
Lord Akuto simply waved him off. “No. If neither of you mind, I think I’ll stay here and visit with Hokoru for a while. Have fun.” He never turned his attention away from the man in front of him, who couldn’t help but sneer slightly at the real meaning in his words.
“Oh, alright. Well, we’ll tell you how it goes. See you soon.” Lord Koga proceeded to exit the manor with disappointment in his every step.
Vegeta couldn’t help but note the sign of displeasure on his father’s face as Lord Akuto continued to smile at him. What was the man up to? He seems to be constantly around his father ever since he arrived and for some reason, his father seems to always be displeased every time he was around. Is it because of the recent news that he and his father found out about him? Or…was there another reason? Either way, Vegeta took note to question his father about it later. For now, he would have to find a way to endure the day with his fiancé and Master.

Actually had to think Final Fantasy when coming up with the battle plans, lol. It’s probably what I’ll do from now on, it’s the only thing that makes sense in what to do in situations like that. :p Like…I remember that it’s best to charm a few weaker characters in order to take out the strongest one in the group. It was the other way around, but then I got stuck with having to actually kill the strongest one when all the weaker ones fell and I switched to the other tactic because it was easier. :) Had someone else do it for me. X) It seems to work and it’s probably also common knowledge...but not when it comes to Zelda…and probably some other games. >.> Anyway…this sounds a little rushed. Not that I was in a hurry or anything, was just on a roll, hehe. X) Anyone know why Akuto is acting so weird around Hokoru? Huh? Huh? O.o If not, then continue reading. :p And not to worry fellow reviewers. I’m writing the story in my own free time and it’s not getting in the way of my social life. However, I shall try and update as much as I can. :)
