“You've been out of it all morning.”
Duo jumped slightly at the sudden statement and looked to Amanda. “Huh?”
She shook her head. “First you miss over a week of work and then you act like a zombie. What's going on?”
He sighed and dropped his eyes to the picnic table. “I met my parents.”
She started. “I thought they were dead.”
He gave up all pretense of trying to eat as everyone at the table looked at him. Wufei put a hand to his thigh in silent support. “I couldn't remember anything before I was five. I just assumed they were dead.”
“But they're not.”
He propped his elbow on the table, leaning his forehead on his palm. “No.”
“I don't understand why you're upset, though.”
He closed his eyes. “My sister and I were kidnapped and held for ransom. She died and I lost my memories.”
“Ransom? Who are your parents?”
He pursed his lips and pushed to his feet, leaving the table. Wufei sighed as he watched his lover duck into the mill. Amanda's brows drew together.
“Is he gonna be okay?”
He stood. “Yes, sooner or later.” He went into the mill and found Duo with his face in his hands at the table in the break room. “Are you all right?”
He didn't answer for a long minute. “I think... I should go home.”
Wufei nodded slowly. “I'll let Bill know. Go on.” He watched Duo leave and punched his own time card to put him back on duty before making his way to the main office.
Bill swirled in his chair. “What's up?”
“I sent Duo home.”
The manager sighed. “How bad is it?”
He sat in the chair opposite Bill's desk. “When he was five years old, he and his older sister were kidnapped and held for ransom. Long story short, he watched her being raped, and was almost raped himself, before she got killed and the house the man was holding them in burned down. He lost all memory of it. He was too young and too vulnerable to deal with it.”
He released a breath and rubbed his forehead. “He's been having nightmares and flashbacks.”
Bill's brows drew together. “Now that he remembers it, it feels fresh.”
Wufei nodded. “Like it happened yesterday.” He wet his lips. “Bill... he may never be able to... I can't trust that he won't accidentally hurt himself.”
“I understand. It sucks, though. He's a damn fine saw operator.”
Wufei smirked. “He's a damn fine model, too. And he can't get physically hurt doing that.”
Bill studied him for a moment. “Neither could you.”
“What?”
“I saw that magazine. You looked like you belonged in front of the camera.”
Wufei snorted, not about to divulge the particular methods they had used to get him to pose. “Trust me, it's not the job for me.”
Bill chuckled. “All right, get back to work.”

Duo sent a half-hearted smile to the doorman as he stepped into the lobby. He crossed to the elevator and hit the up button. Pathetic. That was all he could think. It happened twenty-three years ago. Why the hell couldn't he just get over it. It was invading every aspect of his life. That man's face. His breath. His hands.
A hand fell to his shoulder and he screamed, jerking away and threw his back to the wall, sliding down and covering his head. “No, please no. I can't.”
“Duo!”
The different name pulled him from the unbidden memories and he looked up into worried blue eyes. “Treize?”
“Are you all right?”
He swallowed and pushed to his feet. “Yeah, I was just startled.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Startled? I don't think so.” He gripped Duo's elbow gently and pulled him into the office.
Heero looked over as the door opened and frowned. “I'll have to call you back, Father. No, everything is fine. I look forward to seeing you, too.” He hung up and stood. “What's wrong?”
Duo sat in the chair and dropped his face to his hands. “I think I'm about to get fired.”
Heero knelt in front of him as Treize closed the door. “Why do you think that?”
“I've missed too many days. Today I kept getting my measurements wrong. I can't focus.”
Heero took Duo's hands in his. “What can I do to help?”
He shook his head. “I don't know what to do.”
He kissed Duo's knuckles as he thought. “Maybe you should spend more time with your family.”
“Why?”
“It'll help bring out more memories, hopefully better ones.”
He chewed his lip for a moment. “Maybe.”
“Just think about it.”
“I will. You were on the phone when Treize dragged me in here.”
Heero allowed the topic change and stood. “He's coming back to the states. Flies in Saturday.” He smiled. “And he can't wait to meet you.”
Duo's brows drew together slightly. “What have you told him about us?”
“I haven't told him your life story or anything. He knows where you work and how we met.” He leaned his hip to his desk. “He's made reservations for all of us on Saturday for dinner. Is that all right?”
“Where?”
“Maggiano's.”
“Maggiano's?!”
“Dad's going to pay for it.” As soon as the sentence was out of his mouth, he knew it was the wrong thing to say.
Violet eyes narrowed. “I'm not some money grubber, Heero.”
“I didn't-”
“I can damn well pay for my own dinner.”
“Duo, I wasn't trying to imply anything. I know how frugal you are. I understand that you carefully pay attention to where each penny goes. That's what I meant.”
Duo sighed and rubbed his forehead. “Sorry.” He stood. “I'm gonna go take a shower.”
Heero caught his hand and pulled him to his chest, dropping a quick kiss to his lips. “I love you.”
“Love you, too.” He left the office and went up to the penthouse. He took a shower, mind running a million miles a minute. He barely paid attention as he bathed and got dressed.
He finished braiding his hair, staring at the phone. He couldn't help but wonder if Heero's suggestion would help. At the very least, it couldn't hurt to try, could it? “Just do it, damn it,” he muttered, snatching the phone and dialing.
“Day residence.”
“Um... is Brandon or Samantha in?”
“Both, may I ask who's calling?”
“Duo.”
“One moment please.”
He sat on the edge of the bed, tensing as he waited. He really wasn't sure if it would work and if it didn't, it could end up upsetting his newfound family for no reason.
“Hello?”
“Brandon, it's Duo.”
“Hi, Duo, how are you?”
He could hear the smile in the man's voice. “I was wondering if I could come see y'all.”
“Of course, anytime.”
He wet his lips. “Now?” He silently cursed himself for the shaky quality to his voice.
There was a moments pause. “Yes, son,” he said quietly. “Now would be perfect.”
“Thank you. I'll be there in a few.”
“All right. Bye.”
“Bye.” He hung up and then called the front desk to have his car brought to the front. After jotting a quick note for Heero and Wufei, he left the hotel with high anxiety and low hopes.
Brandon met him at the front door and ushered him into the family room where Samantha was waiting. She pulled him into a tight hug.
“It's good to see you.” Her brows drew together as she gazed at him. “What's wrong?”
He sat across from his parents and rested his elbows on his knees, staring down at his clasped hands. “I'm having nightmares and flashbacks. I'm gonna lose my job if I can't get my head cleared soon.” He looked up to their pained faces. “I was hoping that if I could remember more good times with y'all, the bad shit wouldn't... overpower it.”
Samantha swallowed harshly. “I'm sorry you're hurting. If there's anything we can do to stop it, we'll gladly do it.”
He looked to her. “Heero and Wufei are worried. I don't like that. I'm the comforter. The strong one. I've had to be.”
Brandon shook his head. “You can't be strong all the time. Sometimes you have to lean. That doesn't make you weak; it makes you human.”
Chestnut brows drew together and he stood, crossing to the door and gazing at the maze. Brandon stared at his back silently for several minutes. “Go on.”
Duo had the door open and headed for the maze as soon as his father spoke. He put the fingertips of his right hand to the wall as he entered the elaborate labyrinth. Sure feet led him through the twists and turns and voices echoed in his mind from years gone by. He came to a dead end and stared at the corner, remembering one of the many times he'd hid there.
'Hey, Mikey.'
Large violet eyes raised from his huddle in the corner to his brother. 'I didn't do anything.'
Mark squatted in front of his younger brother, anger flaring in his eyes as he saw the bruise forming on his brother's cheek. 'Who did it?'
He dropped his forehead back to his knees. “Bobby.”
Duo shook off the memory and sat in the corner in the same position as he had all those years earlier. Bobby had been a bully who resented him because of his family's high social standing. Of course, he hadn't understood that at the time. All he knew was that the kid liked to call him names and beat up on him.
That wasn't the only time he came to this spot. Whenever he was upset he hid there, and his brother would come find him and cheer him up. He let his mind drift over the hours they'd spent in the maze; pretending it was a dungeon in a castle or caves to explore. He'd had a damn good life... and that man had stolen it from him... from his family.
“Hey, Mikey.”
He looked up. “Mark.”
He squatted down. “You realize you've been out here for two hours?”
He started. “No. I was just thinking.”
“Are you all right?”
He sighed and rested his chin on his knee. “I saw some bad shit on the streets and over time it... hardens you. You follow the rules. Never go out alone. Never show weakness or fear. You develop a mask and wear it like a second skin... But I got off the streets years ago and built a damn good life for myself. Over time, the edge I had faded some.”
He cut his eyes to his brother. “I think if I'd remembered everything when I was still on the streets, I could have handled it better.”
Mark took and released a slow breath. “I can't even begin to imagine what you've gone through, Mikey, and I'm sorry. There's no words to say how sorry I am. Is there anything I can do?”
Duo gazed at him silently for a moment before smirking suddenly. “Race you to the court.” He was up and running before Mark could register the words. The older brother grinned and jumped up, tearing his way through the maze. They wove through the complex design that had several exits, Duo bursting through his first. They reached the basketball court with Mark three steps behind and bent over to catch their breath.
“That's the first time you've beaten me.”
“I'm not a kid anymore.” Duo raised up, flipping his braid back over his shoulder.
Mark shook his head. “You and Dad, I just can't see how it's worth having all that hair.”
He grinned. “Fei and Heero love it.”
He studied his brother. “How the hell can you keep up with two lovers?”
He shrugged. “To be honest, I'd been trying to get Fei for a while, but he thought I was just fooling around and for him it was more friends with benefits then anything else. Heero's a buffer between us. He's our calm.”
Mark took in his brother's expression and smiled. “You really love them, don't you?”
He blushed slightly. “That obvious?”
Mark laughed. “Yeah. And it seems they feel the same way.”
“So, how long have you been married?”
“Six years.”
Duo raised an eyebrow. “Six years and no kids?”
Mark shook his head. “We have a son.” His smile became bittersweet. “Michael.”
Duo dropped his chin to his chest. “Thank you. I... I'm sorry I forgot about y'all.”
He snorted and hooked his elbow around Duo's neck, pulling him into a one-armed, brotherly hug. “Don't apologize for something like that.”
“We lost so much time.”
“We can make up for it now.” Mark glanced up to the house. “We have an audience.”
Duo looked up as his brother's arm dropped and saw Heero, Wufei, and Brandon at the doors. “Should've known they'd come looking for me.”
“They're good guys.”
The grin he gave his brother was positively wicked. “You have no idea,” he said, voice filled with innuendo.
Mark rolled his eyes with a fond smile as they made their way back to the house. “You really are just like Dad.”
“That's not a bad thing, is it?”
“Naw, Mikey, not bad at all.”
Duo let the name pass. To the Day family, he'd always be Michael, and in retrospect, that wasn't such a bad thing, either.
“Everything all right?” Wufei asked as they opened the door.
Duo smiled. “Better. I just needed a place to hide for a bit.” He looked to Mark. “Thanks.”
“Anytime.”
“Would you like to stay for dinner?” Samantha offered.
Duo looked hopefully to Wufei and Heero who nodded. “Yeah. Thanks.”
“Oh, and Michael.”
“Ma'am?” He grimaced slightly. It seemed five years was enough time for ingrained reactions to that name to still take place over twenty years later.
“Your room is the same as it was when you left. You're free to go look, if you want.”
His eyes widened. “The same?”
Brandon and Samantha exchanged glances. “We didn't have the heart to change it,” she answered.
He looked to his lovers. “Wanna come with me?”
Heero smiled. “Love to.”
They followed him up the stairs and he glanced briefly to one door on the right. “That was Dinah's room,” he whispered before moving to another door on the left. He pushed inside and stared at a room that was so familiar it was surreal.
“Power rangers?” Wufei chuckled as he took in the bed coverings.
Duo wrinkled his nose. “I was a kid.” He crossed to the bed and picked up a worn teddy bear, lips lifting in a small smile. “I rarely went anywhere without him,” he said softly before his eyes caught the picture on the nightstand. He sat on the bed, a lump forming in his throat.
Wufei sat beside him. “How old were you in that picture?”
“My fourth birthday. Mark would've been five and Dinah eight.”
“I didn't realize you were so close in age,” Heero said. “For some reason I thought she was older than that.”
They sat silently for a long moment as Duo gazed at the picture. He chuckled. “She was learning to play the piano, and she sucked royally. I didn't like hearing the racket she made so one day I lowered the cover over the keys and duct taped it shut.”
“I can't imagine that went over well,” Wufei said, laughing softly.
“Dad thought it was hilarious. Well, he gave me a good talking to, but I heard him laughing about it later when he was on the phone with a friend.”
Heero laughed. “I had a similar experience with my dad a year or so after he adopted me.”
“Oh?” Wufei asked.
He nodded. “I had taken the TV apart to see how it worked. I didn't get it back together before he got home. I got a firm lecture myself, but he told me much later on how funny he thought it was.”
“Did you get it back together?”
Heero lifted his chin as he gazed at Duo. “Of course.”
Duo laughed and stood, pulling Heero in for a kiss. After thoroughly dazing his Japanese lover, he leaned down to plant a heated kiss on Wufei's lips. When the other Asian was just as breathless he sat both on the bed and looked from one to the other.
“I'd never make it through this without y'all, you know that, right?”
Wufei cupped his cheek. “You're stronger than you think, Duo, I think you would have made it just fine, but I'm glad you don't have to.”
Duo captured Wufei's lips again, pushing him down on the bed as he wedged himself between his lover's thighs. A warm chest pressed to his back and he shivered when lips kissed and sucked gently at his neck.
Wufei moaned softly, tilting his head as Duo kissed down his neck. “Guys... we can't do this.”
“Why not?” Duo breathed against the moist skin.
Wufei shivered. “We don't have any lube.”
Heero sighed and pressed his forehead between Duo's shoulder blades. “He's right, Duo.”
The braided man groaned. “Fine, but we're finishing this when we get home.”
“Definitely,” Wufei whispered.
